A Joyous Noise: Carlos Vives, Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, NPR Music presents four very special Tiny Desk Home Concerts recorded especially for this week.

Felix Contreras | October 14, 2020
Vocalist Carlos Vives kicks things off in high gear on this Tiny Desk (home) concert with his trademark sound: a celebration of the music from his beloved home country of Colombia, mixed with rock and other Latin music style.

Spirited champeta dance grooves from the country’s Pacific coast permeate his classic 1995 hit “Pa’ Mayte,” and if you look closely you’ll see two of his backup vocalists also playing traditional gaitas Colombianas (flutes). They are used to spectacular effect as a transition between the title cut of his new album Colombiana and “La Bicicleta” (originally recorded with his compatriot Shakira), a vallenato fueled by a bit of reggaeton.

Presenting Carlos Vives has special resonance this week as his latest album recently picked up six Latin Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

Felicidades, Carlitos! And oye, adding that NPR coffee mug to your desk? Nice touch!

The guys I’ve been playing music with for the last five years started talking about getting back together and I had to mention Texas was still in the “uncontrolled spread” category.

One of the benefits of living in a mild climate. We have plans for immediate family (all local) to get together for Thanksgiving if and only if the weather is good enough to eat outside. Masks at all times when food is not actively being consumed.
If there is an increase in Covid cases between now and then, or if anyone isn’t feeling well, we’ll cancel.

Since I won’t be traveling to MA to see my family for Thanksgiving, I sent the money I would have spent on plane fare etc. to various candidates and charities—including the local foodbank and No Kid Hungry.

When I’m not concentrating my rage on the asshole in the white house and his crime organization, I let a little of it spill over to the inconsiderate assholes who fight every possible measure meant to try to contain the virus, putting all of our lives and futures in jeopardy.

I’m old and live far from my family, and it is really depressing to think that I might never get to see any of them again. I’m fine with staying in, but the concept of this being an escalating, never-ending horror show due to selfish assholes just gets to be incredibly hard to fathom.

I know. I have relatives who decided to go ahead and travel to several states with the kids before the eldest left for college. The idea was to pick up the 4 or 5 states they hadn’t been to and check them off their list. One of them was Hawaii, so they didn’t get to do them all, but they did fly across the country, ignore quarantine regulations, rent a camper and go to the rest of the states they hadn’t visited. They got away with it-as far as anyone can tell no one got sick, but it was stupid.
Members of this family have gotten together with the oldsters in their family without masks several times over the summer and I’m terribly afraid they’ll all get together indoors for Thanksgiving as well. Possibly including the college kid coming home as well.

Over two dozen constitutional law experts on Friday endorsed legislation recently introduced by a trio of House Democrats that would establish 18-year term limits for U.S. Supreme Court justices.

The endorsement letter (pdf) signed by professors and scholars across the country, along with a former U.S. senator and a former chief justice of the Utah Supreme Court, comes as the Senate GOP is trying to confirm right-wing Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Donald Trump’s third nominee to the high court, before the November general election.

The ongoing political battle over the Supreme Court vacancy that resulted from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death has elevated discussions and proposals to reform the high court. The term limits bill (pdf) was unveiled last month by Reps. Khanna (D-Calif.), Don Beyer (D-Va.), and Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.).

“We can’t face a national crisis every time a vacancy occurs on the Supreme Court,” Khanna said while announcing the Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act (H.R. 8424), which would allow presidents to nominate two new appointees per four-year term.

Another college student dies from COVID-19, a freshman from La Grange, Illinois. Despite this constant drumbeat from the Trump administration that young people are safe from harm — and yes, so far, the probability of a serious outcome is much lower for those in the younger age groups — it is not true that they are immune. Yet too many either ignore how dangerous this disease is or don’t hold Trump responsible for the continuing disaster COVID is inflicting on our nation.

Tonight, a friend sent an email to our group that included a link to a CNN video of Anderson Cooper interviewing Fareed, and Fareed expressing his hope that this time Trump is going down; another friend and I both responded that we are not so optimistic — as she said

when Trump won in 2016, we were in shock … how could our country have really done this… Many of us have learned that our country is not what we thought. Yes we will be horrified if he wins again, but not shocked.

Another friend, a Bernie fan in 2016, who had expressed a belief from February 2016 (or even earlier) that Trump would win, replied

I’ll be shocked if Trump loses. The writing is on the wall

Meanwhile, I sit in disbelief that a monster who is responsible for the deaths of 100’s of thousands of Americans retains a popularity of 40+%. If this country re-elects Trump, it deserves to die.

Michael Harrington charged that its “obsessive anti-communism” rendered SDUSA politically conservative.[80] In contrast, Harrington’s DSOC and DSA criticized Marxism-Leninism, but he opposed many defense-and-diplomatic policies against the Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc. Harrington voiced admiration for German Chancellor Willy Brandt’s Ostpolitik which sought to reduce Western distrust of and hostility towards the Eastern Bloc and so entice the Soviet Union reciprocally to reduce its aggressive military posture.[81][82]

SDUSA leaders have served in the administrations of Presidents since the 1980 and the service of some members in Republican administrations has been associated with controversy. SDUSA members like Gershman were called “State Department socialists” by Massing (1987), who wrote that the foreign policy of the Reagan administration was being run by Trotskyists, a claim that was called a “myth” by Lipset (1988, p. 34).[68] This “Trotskyist” charge has been repeated and even widened by journalist Michael Lind in 2003 to assert a takeover of the foreign policy of the George W. Bush administration by former Trotskyists.[83] Lind’s “amalgamation of the defense intellectuals with the traditions and theories of “the largely Jewish-American Trotskyist movement [in Lind’s words]” was criticized in 2003 by University of Michigan professor Alan M. Wald,[84] who had discussed Trotskyism in his history of “the New York intellectuals”.[85] SDUSA and allegations that “Trotskyists” subverted Bush’s foreign policy have been mentioned by “self-styled” paleoconservatives (conservative opponents of neoconservatism).[86]

Harrington and Tom Kahn had been associated with Max Shachtman, a Marxist theorist who had broken with Leon Trotsky[87] because of his criticism of the Soviet Union as being a totalitarian class-society after having supported Trotsky in the 1930s.[88][89] Although Schachtman died in 1972 before the Socialist Party was renamed as SDUSA, Shachtman’s ideas continued to influence the Albert Shanker and The American Federation of Teachers, which was often associated with SDUSA members. Decades later, conflicts in the AFL-CIO were roughly split in 1995 along the lines of the conflict between the “Shachtmanite Social Democrats and the Harringtonite Democratic Socialists of America, with the Social Democrats supporting Kirkland and Donahue and the Democratic Socialists supporting Sweeney”.[90][91]

Some of SDUSA’s former members have been called neoconservatives.[97] Justin Vaisse listed five SDUSA associates as “second-generation neoconservatives” and “so-called Shachtmanites”, including “Penn Kemble, Joshua Muravchik, […] and Bayard Rustin”.[98] Throughout his life, Penn Kemble called himself a social democrat and objected to being called a neoconservative.[64] Kemble and Joshua Muravchik were never followers of Max Shachtman. On the contrary, Kemble was recruited by a non-Shachtmanite professor, according to Muravchik, who wrote: “Although Shachtman was one of the elder statesmen who occasionally made stirring speeches to us, no YPSL [Young People’s Socialist League] of my generation was a Shachtmanite”.[99] Besides objecting to being called a “neoconservative”, Kemble “sharply criticized the Bush administration’s approach on [Iraq]. ‘The distinction between liberation and democratization, which requires a strategy and instruments, was an idea never understood by the administration,’ he told the New Republic”, wrote The Washington Post in Kemble’s obituary.[64]

Joshua Muravchik has identified himself as a neoconservative.[100] When Muravhchik appeared at the 2003 SDUSA conference, he was criticized by SDUSA members:[19][101]

Among Joshua Muravchick’s SDUSA critics was his own father Emanuel Muravchik (a Norman Thomas socialist).[19][102][103] His mother was too upset with Joshua’s Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism to attend the discussion.[102] On the other hand, Joshua Muravchik was called a “second-generation neoconservative” by Vaisse.[98]

As long as they recover quickly from COVID-19 (even if it’s discovered that they actually have some long-term damage), the WH team will continue to characterize the disease as “no worse than the flu”. BTW, whatever happened to Crede Bailey, the WH Chief of Security, who was hospitalized a couple weeks ago with COVID? There were some reports at that time that he was gravely ill but there seems to be no follow-up.

With an underlying mortality rate that could be as low as 0.5%, it is certainly likely that those at the WH who were infected will all survive.

Several media sources reported on October 7, 2020, that Bailey contracted COVID-19 in September, prior to the September 26 White House Rose Garden ceremony for the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, with which a number of COVID-19 infections appear to have been related. He entered hospital in late September and was severely ill. The White House has not commented on the situation.

WTF, glad this asshat is in jail.

Wyoming man sentenced in Omaha for making a threat against the president (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

A Wyoming man was sentenced Friday in federal court in Omaha for making a threat against the president.

Timothy Cessor, 27, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, has been in custody for 20 months in the case. He was sentenced to time served with a three-year term of supervised release, United States Attorney Joe Kelly announced in a press release.

Cessor was convicted on July 29, 2020, after a three-day jury trial.

Evidence at his trial established that on Feb. 4, 2019, Cessor broke into his father’s gun safe in his home in Cheyenne, took a .40 caliber pistol and ammunition, and began driving east toward Washington, D.C., to kill President Donald Trump.

Cessor made a short cellphone video in which he declared that he “will not tolerate an incompetent White House.” A few hours into the trip east, while Cessor was in Nebraska, he called his father and stated that he was going to “take care of Trump.” After speaking with his father, Cessor turned around and returned to Cheyenne, where he received treatment at a medical facility. While at the medical facility, Cessor stated that he had begun driving to Washington to kill the president.

The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Cheyenne Police Department in Wyoming.

The end is Nye (Private Eye, more at the link)

THE Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) published its report on the Church of England two weeks ago, sending a chill wind up many a cassock.

It found that “the church’s neglect of the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of children and young people in favour of protecting its reputation was in conflict with its mission of love and care for the innocent and the vulnerable”.

The church duly pre-empted the report with a flurry of announcements designed to, er, protect its reputation. Besides establishing a fund to help survivors, it launched a “Safe Spaces” helpline to counsel victims - which was first promised in 2014, has been endlessly delayed ever since but was somehow magically ready for lift-off in the very week the IICSA report was published (Eye 1511). ?

Another friend, a Bernie fan in 2016, who had expressed a belief from February 2016 (or even earlier) that Trump would win, replied

Meanwhile, I sit in disbelief that a monster who is responsible for the deaths of 100’s of thousands of Americans retains a popularity of 40+%. If this country re-elects Trump, it deserves to die.

Death in Florida linked to deli meat in multistate listeria outbreak (NBC Scottsbluff, Nebr.)

(Gray News) - One person has died and at least nine others have been hospitalized after eating Italian-style deli meats due to a possible listeria outbreak.

The CDC issued a warning about the multistate listeria outbreak Friday. So far, infections have been reported in Florida, Massachusetts and New York.

Interviews with those affected show that deli meat is a likely source of the outbreak. All nine people reported eating Italian-style meats, such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto, in the month before they became ill.

The deli meats were purchased both prepackaged and sliced at deli counters at various locations. A specific type of deli meat and common supplier have not yet been identified.

The CDC is warning people to avoid eating deli meats unless they are thoroughly heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. The agency also advises storing the meat in the refrigerator, away from other food and keeping surrounding surfaces clean.

No more snow days after COVID-19? These schools used online learning to cancel them. (USA Today)

Years before the coronavirus hit, two rural school districts developed plans to put learning online. They were ready for a snowstorm and instead found themselves prepared for a pandemic.

For the Bancroft-Rosalie Community Schools in northeast Nebraska, the move online took four years, gradually incorporating software into daily lesson plans to use during inclement weather or in place of hiring substitutes when a teacher was absent. The district used digital learning to abolish snow days - a trend that has expanded to New York City and could work its way across the country.

Taking classes online full-time happened in a way no one could have anticipated. On March 11, after a possible widespread COVID-19 exposure at a girls’ state basketball game, staff had about an hour to get roughly 285 students out the door with tablets in hand.

re: #101 Shropshire Slasher

Offset agrees with your message.

The Marshall Project has a history of the flag, starting when the term “thin blue line” first caught on in 1922.

It became nationwide when LA’s wildly-racist police chief William Parker opened up the police department for the production of the 1950’s television show “The Thin Blue Line.”

In the 1950s, “The Thin Blue Line” was the title of a briefly running television show about the Los Angeles Police Department, masterminded by the chief, William H. Parker, who took advantage of Hollywood’s proximity to make public relations a key part of his tenure. He also opened up the department’s files to the writers of “Dragnet.”

Parker was known for unambiguous racism. He said some immigrants were “not far removed from the wild tribes of Mexico” and compared black residents participating in the Watts Riots—which stemmed in part from anger over his own department’s mistreatment—to “monkeys in a zoo.”

That’s only likely if hospitals get overwhelmed all over the country. Looking at the best serology data, actual infection mortality rate was around 1.2% without any treatments. Dexamethasone and other cheaply available steroids reduce the mortality rate by up to 30%. We’re looking at an overall mortality rate of around 1%, skewed heavily towards those over 65. This scenario is still horrible, but only 1/3 as bad as the tweet above.

Pence didn’t just let HIV run wild. Pence ignored public health experts who warned that Pence’s actions would result in an outbreak, and the outbreak occurred exactly as predicted.

Pence was a disaster for public health in Indiana, and he’s duplicating that disaster on a massive scale.

HIV was God’s will and his Divine Punishment for Teh Gey.

That attitude has not gone away.

I believe the nun wearing the lighter habit is not wearing a ring. My guess signifying she hasn’t reached a certain stage in her indoctrination

Meadows: “Because it is a contagious virus just like the flu.”

First part is correct, second part could not be more wrong.

We know very little about the long-term effects or the long-term duration of immunity.

We need a vaccine and/or an effective treatment along with widespread, reliable and quick testing.

All of those are a ways off.

Let us come to terms with that and figure how to work around it and live with it as best we can.

As always:

When a Republican action is good, they need a Republican to explain it.
When a Republican action is bad, they need a Republican to explain it.

When a Democratic action is good, they need a Republican to explain it.
When a Democratic action is bad, they need a Republican to explain it.

This applies to everything from Sunday political shows to Cletus Safaris. We still haven’t seen one article on any news outlet interviewing a Clinton voter (or even a Johnson voter) on what they think of the Trump Administration.

Obama invokes florida man

Barack Obama tore into President Trump while stumping for Joe Biden in Florida, urging voters to imagine how nice it would be to have a “normal president” who doesn’t tweet “craziness” every day.

Said Obama: “You’ll be able to go about your lives knowing that the president is not going to suggest injecting bleach. Or retweet conspiracy theories about secret cabals running the world. Or retweeting the claim that Navy SEALs didn’t actually kill bin Laden.”

He added: “You wouldn’t tolerate it from a coworker, you wouldn’t tolerate it from a high school principal, you wouldn’t tolerate it from a coach, you wouldn’t tolerate it from a family member. ‘Florida man’ wouldn’t even do this stuff. Why are we accepting it from the president of the United States?”

Erm, ok. Whatever, you think of the specific numbers, aren’t these all, like, must-win states for Trump? If they’re defining battleground states as “states that are close in the polls”, then saying that there are tight races in battleground states seems to be just saying that “close states are close”. It’s horserace reporting. They have to have their horserace, even though “blowout” also generates news.

270towin.com notes that if all Safe/Likely/Lean states go to the respective candidates, Trump has no path to victory even if he takes every swing state/district. The latest polls have not yet been incorporated.

Swing states and districts: ME-2 (1), OH (18), NC (15), GA (16), FL (29), IA (6).

If the election went exactly by the map, the Dems have 290 and the GOP 163. By that, there is no path to victory for the GOP.

Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk and Rock & Roll Steakhouse will have its permit to sell beer suspended for five days after the Nashville venue served patrons at its bar — a violation of the city’s active public-health emergency order in regards to Covid-19. Currently, watering holes in Tennessee’s Davidson County are prohibited from seating and serving customers at their bars to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

A photo taken last weekend inside the subtly named entertainment venue, which is co-owned by Nashville businessman Steve Smith, showed a packed bar and no masks from most customers or servers. The latter is an infraction and led to its own separate citation. The temporary suspension of the beer permit was a result of a later inspection.

Washington (CNN)White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Sunday that the US is “not going to control” the coronavirus pandemic, as cases surge across the country and nearly 225,000 Americans have died from the virus.
“We are not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigation areas,” Meadows told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”
The comments from President Donald Trump’s chief of staff come as coronavirus cases surge across the US and the administration continues to consistently disregard advice from government health experts to wear masks, social distance and avoid large gatherings as a way to curb the spread of the virus. The White House is also facing a potential second outbreak of the virus after at least five people in Pence’s inner circle have tested positive in recent days, according to a source familiar with the situation.

My Trumpster brother claimed that the stories he heard were that the SEAL captured bin Laden and moved him to a secure location where he could be interrogated for information. We did mock him for that idiocy — but at least it wasn’t as bad as Trump’s retweet — which our brother dismissed out of hand as nothing of concern. Polish protests over abortion ruling take aim at churches (Radio Poland)

Some activists have spray-painted slogans and hang placards on exterior walls of a few churches’ buildings in the Polish capital, the Polish News Agency PAP has reported.

Those who gathered in front of Warsaw’s churches, were holding banners with slogans such as “My body, my choice,” “This is a war. Sadists! We’re coming for you” and “Women’s hell is in Poland.”

Meanwhile, in Poznań, western Poland, a group of protesters entered the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul to stage a protest in front of the altar, interrupting a Sunday service.

Representatives of the Women’s Strike organization during a protest against the tightening of abortion laws in Poland at a cathedral in the western city of Poznań, October 25.

The series of protests was held under the name “Word for Sunday,” a reference to a popular weekly TV show devoted to Bible readings, aired by public broadcaster TVP 2 every Saturday afternoon.

According to Polish law, such actions may be subject to prosecution for offending religious feelings.

Sunday marks the fourth straight day of protests against a ruling from Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal on Thursday which heralded a tightening of the country’s abortion laws, already among the toughest in the European Union.

By the way, any law which prosecutes people for “offending religious feelings” is a blasphemy law.

The all-powerful Roman Catholic Church can’t stand even the least bit of criticism, so the conservative Law & Justice Party outlawed it.

Make no mistake, Christians would do it here as well if they thought they could.

You’re in luck, Minnesota and North Carolina, Mike Pence is taking the GOP Genocide Tour to a town near you.

After visiting North Carolina later Sunday, the vice president is traveling to Minnesota on Monday and back to North and South Carolina on Tuesday. He’s also expected to return to the upper Midwest this week. The official said Pence would continue to be tested but, like Trump, still plans to be on the road every day for the next week.

Mike Pence is using military assets of course for his travel. Because conservatives are inherently grifters, I presume the campaign will not reimburse the government for using Air Force and Marine 2 for his campaign stops every day until Election Day.

This is exactly what the anti-abortion people want for America. Beyond overturning Roe v Wade, a total national ban.

More than that: A ban on contraceptives as well.

and a ban on anything other than missionary-position sex with the lights out between married couples, and only on those days when she is ovulating.

One point we all need to remember: 2 million deaths due to Covid is highly unlikely unless the entire population becomes ill. The apparent U.S. death rate of 2.6% (based on reported deaths / total reported cases) is a vast overestimate. Most people who have recovered from the disease never show up in the statistics because they haven’t been tested, either because they are asymptomatic or because the case is mild enough not to require serious intervention and it’s too inconvenient to get an official test.

Trump said on one of the Woodward tapes (essentially) that the overall death rate is .5%, and unless there are more recent statistics that contradict this, it may be close to accurate — yes, maybe it’s as high as 1% given the widespread comorbidities in the nation, but we are still in the dark.

Yes because we only became aware of this virus ONE YEAR AGO. It will take generations until we have reliable data on long term effects.

And the other point to remember is the excess deaths reported in state vital statistics and people who die who are not diagnosed with the disease.

My state currently reports 63,215 total cases, 595 deaths (less than 1%).
Highest number of positives: Oct 16: 1,286 … second highest Oct 23: 1,225.

Looking at the chart the last three weeks look like the first wave for the state.

If the whole state got this, 1% would be 19,300 dead. For the whole country that would be 3,200,000 dead. While Nazi Germany comparisons are rarely useful that would be half the dead of the Holocaust.

There must be genocide trials.

No doubt — to counteract the narrative that Putin was behind 2016 election interference. The entire Washington GOP is owned by the Russians but then that’s because they share the same views: oligarchy, white supremacy, misogyny, theocracy (Russian orthodox there vs fundamentalism here — same poison but different flavor).

…..

Some excess deaths may be attributed to people not getting the health care they need for other conditions for fear of contracting the virus. Or, especially during the original surge, health care workers not being available to handle routine ailments because they are overwhelmed with COVID cases.

That cannot be legal can it? I seriously hope no one gets hurt from stupid shit like that.

I drive a little hatchback, if that stupid flag flew out of a big ass truck like that it could land on my car making it impossible to see if I was next to or behind them. I hope someone got a tag number and called the cops.

Tough way to call it: A death from a heart attack because you were unable to get care due to Covid-19.

The military counts collateral damage and friendly fire deaths.

Plus a lot of us are going through a “first wave” now, and it has yet to crest.

‘They’re not going to stop us’ — medical marijuana advocates push forward (Lincoln, Nebr. Journal-Star)

After the state supreme court struck down the accepted initiative for this election after a challenge from the Lancaster County Sheriff (seat: Lincoln) based on the one-subject law (his argument was that use, possession, growth, and transport constituted several subjects), an initiative has been relaunched to get it on the ballot for 2022.

190,000 people had signed the petition. Most polling seems to indicate about 70% of the state supports the initiative.

But when you live in a state full of wingnuts, you get responses like this (rather than simply saying “no thank you I don’t want to sign it”):

It is for that reason Eggers found herself in David City in late spring, sitting at a table in front of the post office there, waiting for someone to come by and sign a petition that would allow a vote on medical cannabis.

She didn’t have a lot of confidence she would be successful getting the number of names she needed for Butler County, but she was there. Within five minutes of the time she arrived, a truck carrying three men had come to a stop at the light about 20 feet from her.

And one of those men leaned out of the truck and threw an uncapped water bottle filled with tobacco chew spit in her direction, landing about five feet from her.

It’s not legal.

That said, is there a cop who would give him a ticket? They don’t bother with other equipment violations (if you’re the correct race) for things like polarised plastic over your license plate to avoid tolling cameras and traffic cameras, bald tires, no bumper, &c.

The driver with the traffic camera could have inched forward a little bit onto the flag.

The only poll that matters is the final one on Election Day. Be hopeful, but…

Since I live in Texas, just the idea of that poll is awesome. And since I live in what used to be John Ratcliffe’s districts, which he would win by nearly 50 points even though I voted, no one needs to worry about me being motivated to vote.

It happens so often that I’m tempted to think they are lazy and just call Republican orgs to ask for names of people to interview.

Well that’s what Phony Asshole Tim Russert always did on Press The Meat. Russert repeatedly asked GOP operatives to provide him with “gotcha” questions for Democrats.

That would do nothing but endorse and encourage complacency.

Only if you think that all you need to do is win. But, of you think we’re fighting a war for the sound of the country, it means that you can overwhelm the opposition.
