Oh no! New thread! Anyways…

I dunno if I’ve posted this before. Anyway, whilst researching for a virtual “pub” quiz, I found out that the first-ever commercially digitally recorded record released to the public was this lovely jazz recording:

It’s an album called “Something” by Steve Marcus + Jiro Inagaki & Soul Media. The title track is based on the Beatles song by George Harrison off the album Abbey Road, which was less than two years old when this was recorded. (Jan 1971). This was the second to be recorded using the same recording setup, but the first to be released. (Feb 1972)

Due to the primitive nature of the early digital recording process (It was essentially the equivalent of an analogue stereo reel-to-reel.) the entire album was recorded in one single take.

So how much does producing oil/gas via fracking really produce in PA? And how much does it cost?
IIRC, petroleum retrieval via hydraulic fracturing is - compared to “conventional” drilling - expensive, more-complex, and way lower-yielding (it’s also environmentally destructive, but I wouldn’t expect any of its boosters to give a crap about that, anyway). And that it only makes economic sense at a certain level of world oil prices to be competitive. Which prices, I think, are lower now.

It is thought to be a divisive issue that would brand Biden an anti-jobs, anti-American Energy Independence candidate.

But fracking is not popular and an awful lot of people understand that we need to make progress in energy technology, not just fall back on outdated methods.

In the past several years technology and scale have lowed the break even price for fracking substantially. It used to be about $70 per barrel and has dropped to an estimated $45 per barrel although some estimates put it as low as $30 per barrel. We’ll know when fracking operations start scaling back in a big way I guess.

Cannot emphasize this enough:

Trump’s electoral success was (in 2016) and will be (in 2020) based on two phenomena occurring in the electorate:
1) the loss-of-god problem;
2) the loss-of-identity problem.

The first is obvious (see fundamentalists ranting about everything from evolution to abortion.)

The second is not so obvious. It’s not just about symbols, but about belonging. Even the male displays of desperation (see gun—pulling wacko earlier) are based on the loss of place, the loss of position, the loss of belonging to a group in a particular role.

Trump is really good at playing on these fears.

I still expect Biden to win, because Trump won MI and PA by very small margins, margins that only existed because of that anti-Hillary propaganda that worked so well over 3 decades.

However, I think we need to temper our enthusiasm that has people thinking that states like GA or TX are going to turn blue in 2020.

Such states are slowly losing their right-wing dominant majorities, but I think 2020 is too soon to see those states finally become majority Democratic.

Virginia made that transition from Confederate-loving right wing dominated to a moderate modern-Democratic state because of all the suburban development in northern VA. All those contractors living off of the DoD. Their business may be in death and destruction, but they are on the whole well educated and pretty moderate in social views.

And Atlanta is heavily influencing Georgia, and Houston, San Antonio, and the DFW area are influencing more and more of Texas politics. And big reason for the 2018 House takeover by Democrats was because people like Colin Allred won in Collin County.

The Trumps work their marks well.

Again, the problems I outlined up stream are what motivate people.

Since so many Americans (by the tens of millions) are afraid of the existential crises they will face if there is no god, no identity given to them, these fears are easily fanned by anything that sounds like a threat.

Trump and is spawn know this, It may be all they know, but they know how to manipulate people.

All Trump has to do is get people to be afraid that Biden will take away their god. Trump has been very explicit about that.

And this flows over into economic concerns.

No, I’m not discounting it.

One interesting idea I’ve seen floating around: if the Dems get Texas for a couple of Presidential elections then the electoral college is done. There’s no reason for Republicans to want it then, since it will likely lock them out of the Presidency for the foreseeable future if you think it through. Better to actually care about the millions and millions of Republican in California and New York and Illinois and the rest of the blue states to try to haul their candidate over the line. And the Dems should kill it just out of principle (and that killing it won’t hurt us anyway).

So there’s a possibility that Utah will soon be rationing intensive care, with patients who get sicker despite getting care would be sent home, and younger patients (more likely to live) getting priority over older.

In light of that development, it makes this story all the more infuriating.

Some parents in Utah have reportedly created a “mom code,” an unwritten agreement to avoid testing their children for COVID-19 in an effort to keep schools open.

Heather Bremner, a parent at the Davis School District outside of Salt Lake City, said she first heard about “mom code” last month. She said the concept is spreading in local parent Facebook groups.

“Moms are kind of deciding together that, ‘hey, we’re not going to have our kids tested for COVID,’” she said.

Some of the posts read: “Stay home, don’t get tested!” and “If your child shows COVID symptoms please keep them home but do not test.”

My regional paper’s editor endorses Donald Trump today (surprise).

BRAD STAMAN: My vote will go to … (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

As a Christian, this year’s choice is simple. Let me explain why I feel this way.

One candidate claims to be a person of faith, but his voting record for the past 47 years does not support the claim. The other talks the talk, but how he treats others does not model that of a follower of Christ. Both have trouble telling the truth. However, the latter has shown by how he has pushed and enacted laws that support Christian beliefs, he is at least a friend of Christians.

The latter is President Donald J. Trump.

In his second acceptance speech at the recent Republican National Convention he said, “we proudly declare that all children, born and unborn, have a God-given right to life.”

As we focus on Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter for Christians one of the biggest issues facing this nation is that Unborn Lives Matter (Isaiah 49:1, Luke 1:41). Abortion on demand, right up until the moment a child comes into this world, is not acceptable for this Bible believing Christian.

There are two comments on that article (mine is one). The other:

That you identify as a Christian, and still side with a man who is an adulterer, and racist is a misnomer. The ideals of Christ do not coincide with the ideals of Donald Trump. His lies alone are enough to show that he is in no way “Christ like”. His xenophobic Executive Orders are opposite of Jesus’s teaching to love all, and to treat each stranger as you would Christ himself.

With his ignorance of COVID, he has proven that he does not in fact care for the common man. That he cannot protect his own family and person from this virus shows he is incapable of protecting the rest of us. His levity at the nearly 225,000 who have died from a virus that should not have effected us as it has, due to his own fragile ego requiring him to lie to us, is enough to disqualify him from a second term.

My home town, Scottsbluff, is not racist. It is not xenophobic, and welcomes all from every country, race and creed. You sir, may not be a racist yourself, but voting for Trump means you are ok with that, and accepting of his actions being the antithesis of Jesus Christ. By voting for Trump, you accept his actions being supported by white supremacists through out our country.

Congratulations on being publicly, and now historically proud of voting for a fake Christian.

My comment to the editor:

The Ukraine bit has been thoroughly debunked. It is not covered because it is propaganda. Aside from every person defining “Christian values” as “what I personally believe,” Joe Biden amongst other things the Violence Against Women Act, while Donald Trump stands accused of rape. Joe Biden faithfully attends church, while Donald Trump teargassed peaceful protestors to hold a Bible upside-down in front of one. Abortions have occurred throughout history, they only became an issue for evangelicals when Ralph Reed found he could manipulate evangelicals for conservatives to gain and maintain power and minority rule. (The Southern Baptist Convention made a statement after Roe v Wade noting it was a victory for religious freedom.) Donald Trump was convicted of housing discrimination during the Nixon administration against African-Americans, called for the execution of the Central Park 5 after they were exonerated of the charges brought against them, stole from a veterans charity. constantly breaks the law with everything from his nepotism hires to using government facilities for campaigning. If Trump represents Christian values, I’m glad I’m an atheist.

re: #106 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

The Trumps work their marks well.

Again, the problems I outlined up stream are what motivate people.

Since so many Americans (by the tens of millions) are afraid of the existential crises they will face if there is no god, no identity given to them, these fears are easily fanned by anything that sounds like a threat.

Trump and is spawn know this, It may be all they know, but they know how to manipulate people.

All Trump has to do is get people to be afraid that Biden will take away their god. Trump has been very explicit about that.

And this flows over into economic concerns.

I have a couple of issues with this. The first is that Trump himself has no particular ability to manipulate people, much less crowds. He may have once had some ability in that, but no longer. He is a tabula rasa that right wing media writes on every day. All he does is regurgitate what he sees on TV and Twitter, and it is those media sources that do the manipulation. Trump is only what he seems to be - a stupid man with mild dementia who has gotten a free pass on everything for his entire life because he had the good fortune to be born a wealthy white man in the USA, making him one of the most protected and privileged class in human history.

The second is that your phrasing of the issues, ie. the loss of god and identity and the fear this puts into the average white person, makes it sound similar to the phrasing the NYT and others use in their Cletus safaris - that their economic and religious anxiety is a valid excuse for their hatred of everyone their media tells them to hate. I don’t think that’s your intent, I just reflexively start at the idea of their being any validity to their manufactured worldview.

Republicans have had ten years to come up
with an ACA alternative. Their problem with ACA is not with the legislation itself but with the man who implemented it.

Trump managed to enthrall millions of voters who were transfixed by his performances on a regular basis on cable and network TV, with the media eagerness to provide free airtime to his 2016 campaign. The audiences loved him. He seduced them and they all fell in line, devoted to him and his white supremacist, bullying, anti-immigrant persona. Lizards here may not fall in line and see his charisma — but his supporters all do.

It’s a structural problem. They don’t want everyone to have healthcare because desperate people are easier to control. But they can’t be honest about that.

Mine’s got a set of Porter Vintage pickups in it. I’d never tried Porters, but they really sound good - that prefect Tele twang on the bridge and just a bit brighter and less muddy on the neck. And they don’t cost an arm and a leg, either.

Thank you. That’s maybe more what I’m looking for and only a bit more pricy.

I’m watching Robinson Crusoe on Mars AGAIN (third time in the last few months). Shades of Howard Hughes and Ice Station Zebra, which he used to run over and over for days on end in his hideout/hotel room. Actually I intended to start a different movie, the 1933 King Kong, but clicked Crusoe instead and got distracted while it started up. I heard the screeching 60s sci-fi intro and realized my mistake, but decided to continue with it anyway.
It really is a great movie, with excellent acting by little known Paul Mantee and Victor Lundin and soon-to-be-famous Adam West, with the Wooly Monkey stealing the show as Mona. I’m convinced it would have done better if the producers had stayed with the original title, Stranded on Mars, rather than the goobery Robinson Crusoe on Mars. The Crusoe metaphor would still have been obvious to people literate enough to appreciate the script’s many subtleties and excellent timing, without rubbing their faces in it as though they were backward children.
A lot has been made of the film’s release just before the Mariner IV flyby disproved many of the film’s presentations of the Martian surface and environment.. This is true to a point but a lot of it was also true well before the film was made and the production did indeed deviate from consensus knowledge of the time. Mariner confirmed that Mars was barren and cratered but the planetary science community had accepted for many years that temperature and atmospheric density and composition were far below the minimum required by human life.
It is still a very imaginatively presented and well acted film, the plausibility problem can be beaten just by assuming that it is a different, unknown planet rather than the Mars that graces our skies.

If you’re on a tight budget and looking for good pickups, try Guitar Fetish. I’ve used their stuff in a few of my builds and they’re tremendous bang for the buck. I’ve used the ‘52 Vintage and Fatbody sets, and both are really good for the price.

Those are inexpensive for the sound, but I’d chose the Bill Lawrence Wilde Bill pickups over the GFS any day. When I got mine they were about $80 for a set for what I bought five years or so ago.
