There’s an E-6B Mercury over California. I wonder if they’ll launch a Minuteman III from Vandenberg tonight.

I’ve read too much bad SF and Bond pastiche’s but - I find myself wondering where else that Minuteman III could go from Vandenberg instead… I really wouldn’t put it past that evil MF’ing Mango Moron to find a way to drop 3 170kt’s on New York…

Wife’s hip replacement went much better than expected—in 6 hours she was pushing her walker better than she could a month ago. Between us we have almost enough titanium and chromium steel to complete a Russian attack sub. Theodore Roosevelt:

“…Courage, intellect, all the masterful qualities, serve but to make a man more evil if they are merely used for that man’s own advancement, with brutal indifference to the rights of others. It speaks ill for the community if the community worships these qualities and treats their possessors as heroes regardless of whether the qualities are used rightly or wrongly. It makes no difference as to the precise way in which this sinister efficiency is shown. It makes no difference whether such a man’s force and ability betray themselves in a career of money-maker or politician, soldier or orator, journalist or popular leader. If the man works for evil, then the more successful he is the more he should be despised and condemned by all upright and far-seeing men. To judge a man merely by success is an abhorrent wrong; and if the people at large habitually so judge men, if they grow to condone wickedness because the wicked man triumphs, they show their inability to understand that in the last analysis free institutions rest upon the character of citizenship, and that by such admiration of evil they prove themselves unfit for liberty.”

This is a different moment than anything any of several generations have seen. We rise to this or to hell with us. Defining moment.

We stand at the same crossroads we stood at in 1860. We went the right way until 1876 when even though the compromise put the better one in the office, it still compromised the constitution in ways that still cripple our nation.

We’ve gone over a century since, sometimes slipping forward, more often sliding back, the angels of our best nature crying in frustration at our lack of will.

Now as the moon grows full and blue, we have a chance to grab that damn brass ring finally and none of us know if we’ll have the balls to do so…

Are there actually farmers getting paid who no longer have a farm? Or is it just Trump gibberish again?

I can’t prove that Trump is referencing this, but given his worldview I strongly suspect that he’s speaking in a coded but approving way about the viable grift of having a nominal “farm” for subsidies and tax breaks, which he himself indulges in.

But it’s also real problem in agriculture these days. Big companies are very good at soaking up government money that just becomes part of their income stream, and stuff like crop insurance fraud happens regularly.

On Brian Williams, a panelist (maybe Abby Stoddard?) said that Mitch felt it was worth losing the House and then possibly the Senate and the WH to get the 3 RW judges on SCOTUS and the hundreds of RW judges throughout the federal system. This is McConnell’s greatest legacy — poisoning our nation and destroying justice for decades to come. It will be hard to overcome this lethal toxin he has injected into the bloodstream of our nation. The chaotic evil of Trump is far surpassed by the deliberate systematic evil of McConnell. But this dynamic duo are working overtime to destroy our nation and our future.

The last great GOP president. Ike was a great Supreme commander and an OK president.

I think Ike was pretty awesome.

Troops to Little Rock, took the space program away from the military and made NASA a civilian agency, interstate highways, massive public school expansion, good follow-thru on Marshall Plan, highest marginal tax rate was 90%, kept the Cold War from turning hot, and the following quote:

“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.”

The man wasn’t perfect, but his fuckups were very few. (most notable: “Project Wetback.”)

Ike was the 20th century George Washington, who could’ve been king if he wanted.

So I’m reaching the end of the California ballot marathon — everything done except five local measures (Yes, I was going to get it done this weekend and I didn’t make it. Bite me.), and we have one judicial election. Both candidates are well qualified, experienced, no former prosecutors, established in the community — and gay.

So the times change.

The man wasn’t perfect, but his fuckups were very few. (most notable: “Project Wetback.”)

Good points. Ike was the last great GOP president.

wouldn’t be shocked to see the Dems not only add SCOTUS seats but build additional federal judiciary circuits to help deal with the backlog and expand the judiciary bench holders to counter three years of federalist packing. Then go after the least qualified jurists that Mitch put into play and recall those that are laughably unqualified.

Can a judge be removed for incompetence, as opposed to criminal or scandalous behavior? In any case, it would require a 2/3 vote of the Senate, and even under the best of circumstances it’s not likely there will be 67 Democrats in the Senate. It may be possible if the judge is so egregious in their decisions that even Republicans would like to remove them — but probably not if they are being replaced by a Democrat.

We’ve just had Trump for four years. There isn’t anything a judge is going to do that will get 15-20 GOP Senators to vote to remove him. Doubly so if there is a chance that a Democratic President will be able to appoint a replacement. The Swamp Party without Trump is still going to be The Swamp Party.

Need help with some research from any Seattle area Lizards out there.

Got into a discussion with a former Washington State LEO acquaintance. She brought up a few things I wasn’t aware and/or skeptical of. I’ve been Googling for the last hour or so with mixed results.

One of the things she’s claiming is that a candidate for governor is threatening to take away everybody’s guns. I’m assuming she meant the current Dem governor and candidate Jay Inslee. I’m having a hard time pinning this down. He’s strong on gun control, but I’m not seeing any “Imma in yur houz, taken all ur gunz’ statements. Anyone heard of this?

She’s also claiming gangs of “socialists” are running around beating up cops and people who associate with them in the greater Seattle area.

She also mentioned the East Seattle police station attack, where it was set on fire and people tried Quickrete the door closed to trap the cops inside. I hadn’t heard of that, although that looks to be true.

I’m approaching this stuff with skepticism because I keep hearing things like this from the few conservatives I know who swear everything’s true, and then when I look it up, they’re exaggerating at best. She’s a really nice person, but she’s definitely got a specific world view. Genuine fear of “socialism” taking over the country.

Also doesn’t want a “For profit medical system like Canada has”, because half the Canadians she knows have family members who died because the wait to see a doctor was too long.

So I was doing some work in the basement of a local police agency a few years back. Had to walk through the back of a meeting/training room to get to the gear. And one afternoon they had this guy come in and do a slide show about “current threats”. And it was the worst sort of Bircher Red-scare bullshit, basically just intel-agencied-up rehashes of what the Fox crowd thought the immigrants and lefties got up to in their spare time.

I’ve heard things since then about private companies that do these briefings - it’s another marketplace that’s gotten dominated by right-wing liars. And of course there are the private Facebook groups for police which are just as awful as you’ve heard. So when local LEO talk about this shit, I know full well that it could be something they legit heard at work, and and genuinely bullshit at the same time.

re: #187 NetworkKed

I’m in an online group with this woman and another guy. They are genuinely nice people, but I know them well enough now that I can guess their political perspective: anti-Trump conservatives with a baaaaaaad case of False Balance Poisoning.

The guy in question was pissed off about MI guv Whittmer’s COVID response way back at the beginning of the pandemic. Again, another situation where I’m at an utter disadvantage in the conversation because I have zero education on the subject.

So after the Zoom call, I look up Michigan’s COVID response. In a shocking turn of events, it’s basically the same as what we were doing here in NJ.

I get so fucking frustrated dealing with people like this. Almost every goddamned time, the fucking reality is utterly at odds with the info they’re being fed.

Many Never Trumpers are offended by Trump’s aesthetics. They want to continue the tradition of pretending that Buckley was saying something different than the Birchers, as opposed to saying the same thing in a patrician tone.

They like the self-serving, pseudointellectual perfidy equivalent of burlesque, and it pisses them off that their base prefers Trump’s Tijuana donkey show rhetoric.

Trump’s been accusing my governor of shutting down the state. In the past two days, I’ve been to the gym and picked up chicken from Nando’s. I’ve had to wear a mask. Yeah? And I don’t care because this thing isn’t cured.

Basically why I keep holding the Lincoln Project at arm’s length. Regardless of how the election goes, they’re either going to fold up shop because they won’t have the steam to taunt him for another four years; or they’re going to start knifing Biden in the back for banning abortion.

Rachel did a story, “natural experiment,” on her main page, comparing covid numbers in Kansas, where localities had the option of keeping or dumping the governor’s mask order. I can’t figure out how to link to it, but it’s on her main page on the msnbc site. Might give a rational human being that simple measures actually work.

Yeah, right now I’m alienated from most of my friendly neighbors because I don’t want to be around for political discussions; a lot of it is the frustration that their empathy runs out so fast.

But on the other hand, they just refuse to notice how conservative policy doesn’t do what it claims to; it’s always Others and outsiders that cause problems and make things not work. Because I’ve been an outsider and subject to abuse of power repeatedly in my life, I find it way too easy to imagine the conditions under which I’d be deemed an “other” by my community. And on the other hand, I’ve lived in the same place for thirty years and have noticed how people choose not to see the ugly things that people do inside their communities.

Most of my new neighbors seem to be Biden supporters but I don’t dare bring politics up. I’ve had relatives I’ve gotten to know through genealogy expose themselves as Trumpers and it’s so hard to reconcile because they know in part through me our family’s immigration experience. I just don’t bother. If Trump comes up, I’ll condemn him but I don’t look for political conversation with most people because I think most people don’t get it.

When I hear politicians from either party talk about farming, I always think back to a faded bumper sticker I remember as a kid during the height of the 1980s farm crisis: “Trade Not Aid.” Farmers from all sides have long said they prefer a fair price and a fair shot over aid.

I’m a little more cynical. I think most of the MAGAt farmers are quite happy getting Our Tax Dollars funneled into their pockets, no matter what they say, whenever the crop season was too bad/it was too good and the price was too low/subsidized water, insurance, property taxes, fuel, and so on. They just like it dressed up a bit like it was a business deal, so they’re not happy when Trump acts like he’s leaving a couple hundred on the bedside table.
