And praise to Mary Trump for apparently being the one somewhat decent one in that rancid family.

By the way, I wasn’t really exaggerating downstairs, Glenn’s whole swan song email to his editors basically amounts to “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!”

You ever watch a movie/TV show/cartoon/etc where an aging actor gets into a fight with the director acts as a total prima donna and finally storms off the set screaming “THE STUDIO WILL HEAR OF THIS!”? That was basically Glenn, who’s decided that the entire editorial staff of TI is there to wipe his ass and thank him for the privilege.

A while back, I posted about a Facebook post by Yvette d’Entremont (aka SciBabe) who was quoting a statistician friend of hers that was analyzing COVID data. I can’t find my original post, but thee gist of it was, the first spike in April was New York, New Jersey, etc. The second spike in July was California, Texas, Florida, etc. He was saying that the data was looking like there would be a third spike that would be “The whole country” and would peak sometime from election day to Thanksgiving.

It’s looking like that is exactly what is happening.

It’s just that people felt comfortable nodding along when they thought there were no consequences to his hackery.

My county (~720,000 people) had its big peaks early on, as you’d expect for NY state. Then we got our numbers WAY down - by September and early October we were down to new cases in single digits. We went more than a week (two weeks, I think) without anyone dying, and we got down to 3 ICU beds in use.

Then the schools reopened and outdoor dining moved indoors. The 7-day rolling average as of today is 66 new cases a day. We had another death today (still averaging only 2 or so a week, thankfully), and we’re back to 14 ICU beds in use. Still way under capacity and way under our hospitalization peaks at the beginning, but every number continues to move in the wrong direction.

I know we go up and down on what can go wrong with this election, and I truly believe that we are heading for a “wipeout.” However, there are plenty of smart people who are gaming this thing out, and what can happen at various places along the way, as DT has PROMISED that he would do. This article made me ill, so if you are feeling twitchy, put it aside for now.

To be fair, while the weather in Fayetteville is not too bad according to the forecast, Zeta is over the Delmarva Peninsula, and I doubt the Air Force would be interested in flying the President near a tropical storm if it could be avoided. Zeta has a huge windfield (though mostly out to sea at this point).

The way he wanted to make Snowden into Daniel Ellsburg 2.0 which unfortunately Ellsburg himself was happy to oblige was infuriating. Sorry I never had any use for Ed acting like he had a problem with our surveillance systems and then going to hang out in Russia and and then there was the fact that Snowden had no problem with this stuff when Bush was President but he suddenly has this epiphany under Obama? Bullshit. Snowden was an asshole who didn’t like that Obama became PResident and he used that as an excuse. And Greenwald supported the same foreign policy actions that he now condemns Democrats for.

I imagine the fact that Tucker and the rest of the MAGAt media has been happy to pet his ego and tell him what a good boy he is has soured his relation with his editors to the point that he’s convinced any pushback from them on his articles is “proof” that they’re trying to “censor” him.

Greenwald has been getting high on his own supply of outrage for a very long time, and he has consistently used his feelings as the sole arbiter of truth.

It annoys me that I took a relatively long time to see that pattern in his output.

My county (5,042) is rising rapidly now, as you’d expect for the High Plains states which ignored the hard-won lead time New York, New Jersey, and Washington gave us.

We only have one ICU bed in the county, and the community hospital is probably not equipped to take care of someone with a severe case of Covid-19 (they would likely go to the hospital in Scottsbluff).

There have been no deaths in my county yet. There are no cases in my town yet.

Numbers are coming in now from Panhandle Public Health District (population, about 83,000 spread over 14,180 sq mi/36,728 sq km).

Revised up for October 28: 107 cases new. Revised up for October 27: 100 cases new.

Today: 13 new cases reported (that number will probably be revised upward later).
Deaths: 16 (+2, both Scott’s Bluff County, seat Gering)
Weekly positivity rate: 59%
Cumulative positivity rate since April 1: 11.7%

Yeah, that seems to be the case here as well: Glenn basically wrote a long screed about how Biden is worse than Nixon and the press are covering for his ass, before pulling his usual CYA at the end of “I’ve no proof, but I really feel this is true.” His editor tried to let him down gently by saying that Glenn had a good point about the press not asking Biden tougher questions but the bulk of the submitted article was unsubstantiated horseshit…and Glenn didn’t take kindly to the suggestion.

“How could Ross possibly think it was ok to serve on the board of a Chinese joint venture while also serving as US Secretary of Commerce?”

The answer is simple. Ross is a conservative, and political conservatism consists of one proposition: there must be in-groups who the law protects but does not bind, and there must be out-groups who the law binds but does not protect.

Widespread conservative approval of Trump’ law-breaking should be seen in this light — Trump is merely doing what conservatives think he is entitled to do.

Not much claim to knowing the actual completed votes, but those states that have party registration can release data on the number of registered Dems or GOP who have voted or requested absentee ballots. The guess is that they voted their usual preference.

U.S. Coronavirus Cases Surpass 9 Million With No End in Sight (New York Times)

CHICAGO — The United States, which reported its first known coronavirus case in Washington State 282 days ago, surpassed nine million total infections on Thursday, including more than half a million in the past week, as Covid-19 spiraled out of control in the lead-up to Election Day.

Across the country, alarming signs suggested the worst was yet to come: More than 20 states reported more cases over the past week than at any time during the pandemic. Patients were sent to field hospitals in El Paso and the Milwaukee suburbs. Growing outbreaks led to new restrictions on businesses in Chicago. Exactly zero states reported sustained declines in cases.

“There is no way to sugarcoat it — we are facing an urgent crisis and there is an imminent risk to you, your family members, your friends, your neighbors,” said Gov. Tony Evers of Wisconsin, where hospitals have been strained, case numbers have exploded and more than 200 coronavirus deaths have been announced in the past week.

With the presidential election days away, the country is now averaging more than 75,000 new cases daily, the worst stretch of the pandemic by that measure. Deaths, which lag behind cases, remain far below their spring levels but have ticked upward to about 780 each day. More cases have been identified in the United States than in any other country, though some nations have higher per capita infection rates.

Honestly, they are living in “The Sky is Green” land. Early voting where it is tracked is showing 3 to 1 Registered Democrats to Republicans voting.

This is looking to be one of the highest voter turn out elections in history. High turnout always is good for the Democratic party.

Admittedly, they’d do a lot better in Rochester, which is going to be mild (41 degrees F, 5 degrees C) tomorrow. I’m wondering if that “internal polling” told them that perhaps showing up on Mayo Clinic’s doorstep wouldn’t play well when he’s already tried to sue them to steal their test kits for the government.

Honestly, they are living in “The Sky is Green” land. Early voting where it is tracked is showing 3 to 1 Registered Democrats to Republicans voting.

This is looking to be one of the highest voter turn out elections in history. High turnout always is good for the Democratic party.

I hope you are right. These morons on this message board(I go because it’s a sports message board) are soooo confident it has me spooked.

More than 80% of the ballots in Nebraska have been returned. (Our voter turnout in 2016 was 63%).

46,000 more absentee ballots were requested by Republicans than Democrats (that includes mandatory mail voting areas like mine), 194,000 D, 240,000 R.

Democrats returned so far 86%, Republicans 79%.

Non-partisans requested 95,000 ballots, and have returned 77.5%.

It will be interesting to see which way the non-partisan ballots break, especially in NE-2. I’m hoping (I have to have some sort of fantasy in this hellscape we call 2020) that the break in non-partisan ballots washes toward the Democrats, such that we take the electoral votes 3-2 (or with a stunning upset in NE-1, 4-1).

optics of freezing trumpsters in Omaha and heat stroking others in Tampa did not do well with internal polling…

And…

The survey of six battleground states - Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - found that majorities of voters saw Trump “much less” or “somewhat less” favorably because of his practice of holding in-person rallies, with people standing shoulder to shoulder and not wearing masks.

In other fantasy football election races:

Now, Republican leaders who were worried King could lose the typically conservative seat feel all but certain of Feenstra’s electability. Cook Political Report ranked the race as “solid Republican” after Feenstra won.

But Democrats argue populist challenger J.D. Scholten also represents the individualistic values of the area and stands a chance. Although Scholten lost his last congressional bid against King in 2018, the narrow margin between the candidates was enough for people to take notice, according to the Iowa Capital Dispatch.

When Scholten ran in 2018 against King, he was about 10,000 votes away from defeating the Republican incumbent. This was in a district where Republicans currently have a registration advantage over Democrats of 77,000 voters.

Without Steve King, Iowa’s 4th Congressional District is in for a shake-up (Iowa Capital Dispatch via the Omaha World-Herald)

I’m not sure the whole “high turnout is good for Dems” thing actually holds up. Looking at the last 12 presidential elections (going back to 1972), it’s a pretty mixed bag, honestly.

The three highest turnout elections were 2008 (58.2%), 2004 (56.7%), and 2016 (55.7%). The three lowest turnouts were 1996 (49%), 1988 (50.2%), and 2000 (51.2%). Democratic nominees have actually won with the highest and lowest turnouts.

Great review of Rod’s Magnum Dopus
christiansocialism.com

I desperately wish that we lived in a world in which nobody had to pay any attention to Rod Dreher. Technically we do live in such a world: it is neither ontologically nor morally necessary either that his writings exist or that anybody afford them press coverage. But in American publishing vox denarii vox Dei is the rule, and Dreher’s considerable personal charm will always afford him a warm reception in a media landscape that anoints conservative intellectuals primarily on the basis of their ability to avoid overt racial slurs during fifteen minute television appearances. In the interest of sparing the reader’s time and blood pressure, I will state my conclusion at the outset: Rod Dreher’s Live Not By Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents is not worth your time or anyone else’s, because it contains nothing that has not already been said by a thousand other forgettable mediocrities, all citing the same books for the past six decades, all working each other into hysterics as brain fevers and libido remunerandi erode the ordinarily obvious distinction between social opprobrium and show trials. In light of the intellectual vacuity and the vicious spiritual poison that have animated Dreher’s political projects over the past five or so years, a reader who values their conscience should give this book as wide a berth as a firm underhand throw and deep water will allow.

For those stubborn or foolhardy enough to persevere with me, I promise nothing but lengthy discussion of a tedious book that does not meet basic standards of readability or intellectual integrity but that will be bought and read by the sort of person whose middle-class anxieties demand that their hatred for racial and sexual minorities be cloaked in cultural concerns that they imagine get discussed at cocktail parties to which they are not invited. Dreher’s main concern in writing this book is “soft totalitarianism,” which he is quick to point out does not actually exist yet, but which he is absolutely certain poses a civilization-scale threat to the United States. It is important to note that at no point does he actually define “soft totalitarianism” or tell us how we would know it had arrived. Its function is atmospheric: it hangs in the air of his book, an eschatological photonegative to the kingdom of God that Christ has made present among us. Always lurking somewhere in the future, soft totalitarianism is supposed to instill the atmospheric dread of an old episode of The Twilight Zone, assuring us that the book’s litany of interviews with Eastern Bloc dissidents has something to teach contemporary Christians about the coming persecution—even though it will supposedly be very different from anything they experienced.

Yet it worked. The assholes know what they are doing.

They do, yes. But they’re chasing diminishing returns. 6600 people in Ambridge. 164,000 in the county. Maybe in a really good year you get 100,000 of them to vote. A 60-40 R margin nets you an extra 10,000 Republican votes.

130,000 people in Cambria County. Maybe 80,000 voters in a good year… and so maybe you add 8000 net Republican votes if you really get them juiced up.

Now compare that to the 1.5 million people in Philadelphia. Get turnout THERE amped up, improve even a smidge on the 83 D-15 R performance Clinton delivered there in 2016, and you could put another 100,000 or more net D votes in the box in one fell swoop.

And, oh, what’s this?

“Philadelphia has the highest number of registered voters in 35 years”

“More than 90% of eligible residents have signed up to cast a ballot.”

billypenn.com

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to win back the Ambridges and Johnstowns… but the future of Democratic wins, if they’re going to keep happening, will be in the Philadelphias, and it looks like the strategy there is going to pay off this year.

They’re fun to track with ancestry.com, because their name - Dignal - appears in various documents as Dignal, Dignol, Dignan, Degnan, and Buignol. My presumption is they were illiterate, so they had no idea how to spell the name, and had heavy accents that the census takers couldn’t decode. But I know it’s them because of the names and ages of the children!

My presumption is they were illiterate, so they had no idea how to spell the name, and had heavy accents that the census takers couldn’t decode. But I know it’s them because of the names and ages of the children!

It’s just amazing to see. I actually located the likely home village in Mayo where Great Nana’s Nana was from. It’s right near where they filmed The Quiet Man. Funnily enough I watched that movie when I studied in Galway without knowing my family’s connection to that region though I always suspected it since we’re Joyces on that side.

Jerry Falwell Jr., ex-president of Virginia’s Liberty University, has filed a lawsuit against his former school in an attempt to reverse his fall from grace…

The lawsuit filed in Lynchburg Circuit Court on Wednesday describes Falwell and his family as the targets of a “malicious smear campaign incited by anti-evangelical forces…”

Liberty University has engaged a Chicago-based law firm, Baker Tilly US, to conduct an independent investigation into Falwell’s tenure as president, including accusations of self-dealing. The school’s board said the investigation would look into financial, real estate and legal matters.

Last week, the firm launched a website where Liberty University employees, contractors, and business affiliates can confidentially report evidence of misconduct.

All the desperate cheating could work in a close race, but ONLY in a close race. BUT, Pennsylvania is taking proactive measures. I read that they’ll be segregating VBM ballots that come in after polls close on 3 November, because they worry that if they don’t, and the SCOTUS rules on the THIRD try that late-arriving ballots are invalid, some court will rule that the pool of ALL VBM ballots is irretrievably contaminated by the invalid votes and NONE can be counted.

I think PA will end up solidly blue this year for several reasons: massive Philly city and suburban turnout for sure, but also the hometown-boy factor for Biden in NE PA. As it was, Clinton did win Lackawanna County (Scranton) in 2016, though only by 3 percentage points. I think Biden beats that number handily, and probably reduces Trump’s margin significantly in other parts of the region, too.

And I think he’ll do better than Clinton in Pittsburgh as well.

Plus, the third-party factor will be much smaller this year than it was in 2016, when both Johnson and Komrade Steinova each drew more votes than the small margin between Trump and Clinton.

Kasparov said that from his sources he’s learned that covid issues (surprise surprise) are far worse than the official and already bad tallies in Russia. OTOH, you can see that with the economy going down the drain and public health in a real crisis, Putin might pull back; but, OTOH, as Kasparov speculates, fucking with foreign elections is all Putin has left to survive on. He thinks there will be hacking of county-level elections at the very least to sew (sp?) discord.

New York Is In A Financial Tailspin, Millions Are Suffering. Why Shouldn’t Billionaires Pay More Taxes? (Gothamist)

New York City has 18% of the country’s billionaires.

At the same time, New York’s financial sector posted $27.6 billion in profits over the first six months of 2020, an increase of 82% compared to the same period of 2019, according to a recent report from the state comptroller’s office. Globally, billionaires saw their wealth increase by 27% to $10.2 trillion, from April to June 2020; New York is home to more billionaires than nearly any other state in the country.

“I think it’s outrageous and insulting to continue to put billionaires ahead of working families who actually make New York possible. It’s a slap in the face,” Queens State Senator Jessica Ramos said.

Before you rub that lamp too hard, remember that somebody somewhere wished for 2020 to be “a year unlike any other”/////

This exchange is just astounding. Stuart posts one of his remarkable autochrome photos, and Kristine Froeba identifies the uniform and the exact spot where the photo was taken 92 years earlier.

Biden’s DOJ will need to do a deep cleaning of the DOJ and review so many cases that passed under the radar or were purposefully dropped.

For instance, the DOJ quietly killed the Tamir Rice civil rights case.

That’s right. Tamir Rice, who was murdered by Cleveland cops and never had a chance to ever comply with any nonexistent orders by cops to stop whatever he was doing, will not have his civil rights case acted upon by the Trump DOJ.

They dropped the case.

Fuckin’ Trumpworld doesn’t care how many blacks are murdered by cops. They never did. The cops who support Trump are fine with this. They’re fine touting the forcible separation of children from their parents and all the rest.

re: #145 Blind Frog Belly White

“If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.” - David Frum

And this is not a promise of future GOP misbehavior. It is a report of present GOP misbehavior, with the craptastic Shelby County v Holder case as exhibit #1.
