Religious school retreat led to coronavirus outbreak in Wisconsin

The coronavirus tore through a religious school retreat in Wisconsin over the summer, fueled by a lack of proper mitigation measures. Although nobody fell seriously ill, the scope of the outbreak — an exceptionally high 76 percent infection rate — suggests the intensity with which the airborne pathogen can proliferate in the absence of appropriate measures.

The outbreak is discussed in a new study published on Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC does not name the camp in question, describing it only as a “faith-based educational retreat for boys in grades 9-11” in Wisconsin.

They’re supposed to have a conference with prosecutors and indicate their compliance email was sent. They were supposed to do this compliance email before today - to send an email to everyone they tried to dupe correcting all the nonsense they spewed.

Now they’re trying to claim that they need to find a different email service to do this and hardship nonsense.

If they don’t comply, the judge may well throw the book at ‘em (as he should - law and order and all).

I suspect, with a criminal case still pending, the judge’s order that they essentially admit guilt of a crime is probably going to get tossed on appeal.

re: #516 Hecuba’s daughter

A FB FOAF described Trump as the “imperfect vessel” who he supports because he likes his policies. They may not like his personal immorality nor his grifting nor his bullying, but they do like his policies on a whole range of issues, both foreign and domestic. They don’t care about the personal behavior of an official, no matter how heinous or illegal, if the policies comport with their views.

Any excuse so they don’t have to say “I’m a racist.”

mmmirele  Oct 30, 2020 • 11:25:38am

We have similar scolds here in the USA who don’t want the poor to actually enjoy their food. It has to be cheap, bland, tedious and demonstrate that the poor are suffering. This is about the British Tories.

Every time child poverty enters the news cycle, social media feeds are swept up in po-faced scold-recipes for frugal, joyless struggle meals, each complete with a smug price breakdown. A slew of half-raw eggs, boiled chicken and grey potatoes are offered up as exhibits in an ongoing moral case against the working class. To prove once and for all that hunger is a symptom of household mismanagement, profligacy and stupidity - and that they therefore deserve the punishments of poverty.

Recently, Annunziata Rees-Mogg took a moment out of her busy schedule of managing her family mansion and hefty stock portfolio to chide an unspecified public for eating ready-made oven chips rather than the marginally cheaper option of raw potatoes. Her implicit message - that choosing the latter is a symptom of laziness, stupidity or both - telegraphs the idea that the struggles of poverty are a choice continually taken by feckless plebs who waste their money on fags and football tickets. Why should we (and the “we” here is important) indulge such irresponsible behaviour? it asks. Why should the state pick up the tab for individual moral laxity?

I see Politico is in full “both sides” mode. Yesterday was a “Are the shy Trump voters going to fool the pollsters YET AGAIN????” article. Today it’s “Trump needs a miracle to win.”

I realize it’s FUD, but I have to admit, it does make me pause. Last election, I was really worried Trump could somehow win, but then on the night before, I kinda zenned out and was like, “Nah, it’ll be close, but HRC will be fine.” History, of course, decided to be an asshole the next day.

Here’s my understanding about the shy Trump idiocy: the polls at the time were actually more “Ya know, he has a real shot at this”, and the shy Trump voter was waaaaay overblown.

Do I have that right?

This very rural voter drove our ballots sixteen miles into the county seat.

Because of the way the delivery routes from the sorting centers are in the Panhandle, for me to mail a letter from Broadwater to Bridgeport requires this route. Broadwater is at the end of the delivery route which comes from North Platte up US-26. The truck arrives in the morning, sits all day here, then returns, picking up mail along the way.

Bridgeport is at the end of the route going east down US-26 from Scottsbluff, and they are last on their route.

So a letter from here to Bridgeport actually takes the route Broadwater-North Platte-Denver-Scottsbluff-Bridgeport. (That was before DeJoy’s fuquery, the route hasn’t changed though the mail has slowed.)

Or, I can drop off ballots when we go to town for other stuff, which we did.

Random thought I had: was Trump contracting COVID the absolute worst thing that could have happened? He clearly feels bulletproof, and the Admin has abandoned all pretenses of trying to control the virus. As a result, we are going to hit numbers never dreamt of in terms of daily positives and the like. Maybe deaths don’t hit the April peaks and the death rate is lower, but 2k dead/day seems like a foregone conclusion, with nothing done to stem the tide (at the federal level at least) until (dog willing) Biden is inaugurated.

The whole thing is like Trump’s response to the Senate not voting to convict.

The state polls were not balanced right, but if you go back and look you see they were really squishy in the post-Comey mess. “shy Trump voter” simply did not exist.

I spent the Sunday before the election writing a post at GOS about how the polls were better than Nate was claiming. I was so embarrassed that I never posted there again. Appreciate that. Like I said, Politico needs their Magic Balance Fairy fix, so grain of salt and what not.

I can sort of vouch for the PA stuff. One of Philly’s western counties, Montgomery, tends to lean GOP and they seem to have buyer’s remorse. I’m not sure about Bucks County, which is north of the city. It’s pretty MAGAty and I don’t see that changing, but who knows?

My niece’s wedding was originally supposed to be in early May; hundreds of guests, synagogue and rabbi, country club reception, catered dinner, live band, video crew etc.

Instead… late March, at my brother’s house. 6 people present; other niece officiated with an on-line ULC ordination. The catered dinner, that they’d already paid for, became boxed meals given to a food bank for distribution. The band and video crew could keep their deposit if they if they spent the day delivering food bank boxes to the elderly.

We’ll have a proper reception when this is all over.

My daughter’s wedding was two weeks ago. We had 36 guests total, reception was in a covered pavilion with open sides, people wore masks except when eating or drinking.

I didn’t even hug my almost-90 year old parents; I haven’t since March.

I missed that the most but we still had a joyful joyful day and minimized everyone’s risk.

as you all know,
- dangermom (my mom) lives 8 miles from us. she’s 92
- mrsdm is extremely high risk due to her lung condition and surgery a couple of years back. doc says she should be following the rules with zero tolerance, after all it’s a respiratory infection.

except for me driving her to a doctor now and again, mom never goes out. she’s got real good at watching zoom lectures.

i go over to mom’s every wednesday with groceries
mrsdm and i bring take out every sunday (cause we’re toast after ponding all day)

we never touch mom. we dont wear masks

we do eat at a small-ish kitchen table.

we think we’ve created a fairly good operational ‘pod’ of the three of us.
sure anything could happen. we’re very careful at home and ‘assume’ the protocols we’ve been following (and what we have not been doing) has been working.

mrsdm’s parents (also 92 and 93) live in NJ.
we’ve missed both their birthdays, a wedding last week that they were at, and there won’t be our annual pilgrimage to NJ and Massachusetts this holiday season.
i’ve gone over lots of scenarios on how to get her safely to NJ and back. - driving, renting an RV, flying, whatever.

there is no way that doesnt significantly risk getting mrsdm infected, or infecting her parents, or bringing something back and infecting dangermom.

as much as it hurts, it’s just not worth it.
‘doing nothing’ is not easy.

Said it before, will say it again: he’s the political journalism equivalent of the kid eating paste in the far corner of the classroom.

He’s so far up the Magic Balance Fairy’s ass that his entire run on Meet The Press feels like one multi-year audition tape to be the new Alan Colmes for Fox.

The national polls were actually REALLY GOOD.

Yup. Every reputable national poll indicated HRC would win by several percentage points. That happened.

Very late in the election cycle, Nate Silver did publish an article explaining how HRC may win the popular vote and lose the electoral college. I think he published that just a couple days before the election (maybe the day before).

Appreciate that. Like I said, Politico needs their Magic Balance Fairy fix, so grain of salt and what not.

I can sort of vouch for the PA stuff. One of Philly’s western counties, Montgomery, tends to lean GOP and they seem have buyer’s remorse. I’m not sure about Bucks County, which is north of the city. It’s pretty MAGAty and I don’t see that changing, but who knows?

Uhhhh…. Montgomery went 59-38 Clinton in 2016. The only two counties that were bluer were Delaware and Philly itself. And even Bucks tipped just barely blue (by a fraction of a percentage point) that year.

And I’ve been wondering for a while just how many mailed-in ballots there are going to be. Maybe from very rural areas (which, by the way, tend to skew red), but everyone who can vote in person seems to be doing it, probably scared off by USPS tampering.

we ordered up the mail in ballots
then considered in person / early - it might be safe enough for me and mrs dm.
but not mom

then i realized florida counts when received so we figured we’d drop them at the SOE and monitor the web site. if there’s a problem we’d still have early voting.

results were posted in one day.

Do I have that right?

go here

Again, anything is possible. But from where we sit, it takes an awful lot of bending and twisting to try to make the data conform with the existence of all these alleged shy Trump voters

I’ve been spending a lot of time staring at PA election results from 2016, and the longer and harder I stare at them, the more I realize just what a fluke it was that Trump pulled out an EC win at all.

A smidge more turnout in Philadelphia and Clinton would have won the state.

Less active third-party candidates (Johnson got 146,715 votes, Stein got 49,941, and Trump won by 44,292 votes) and Clinton might well have won the state.

It was the narrowest possible way Trump could have squeaked in, and then he somehow ran the table and did it the same way in Michigan and Wisconsin.

The factors are so different this year. I have a lot of confidence that Trump cannot repeat what he did in 2016.

Are Trump Supporters Committing Mass Suicide At His Rallies? Why?

Not wearing a mask at this point in the pandemic is pure oppositional defiance disorder, carried to the point of suicidal petulance.

The 40-year run of ignorant white yahoos getting their way in national politics is hitting a brick wall. It’s impossible to deny any longer that there is NO RATIONAL GOVERNING PHILOSOPHY at the heart of the modern GOP other than the “Suck it, libtard!” screech of outrage fed to them by Hate Radio and Fox.

What will the reaction be? Will Trump’s people take to the streets in a national orgy of mass murder if/when he loses?

Or will there be a few isolated violent incidents, a lot of noise, and then a huge uptick in suicide, deaths by alcohol/opioids and domestic violence in rural areas?

For all the focus on the Cletus Safari counties and the fracking towns, their total vote counts are just a fraction of what Philly can deliver if turnout there is as high as it looks like it will be. It’s California and NY vs. Wyoming and North Dakota, writ in miniature.

Khal Wimpo (not drinking damn fish tank cleaner)  Oct 30, 2020 • 12:06:57pm

I found these paragraphs compelling:

If racial and cultural moderates abandon the GOP, the voters left in the party will tilt even further toward Trump’s message of racial and cultural resentment. “The Republican Party is going to continue to shrink and become more monolithic and less relevant and more regionalized,” Madrid, the Lincoln Project co-founder, told me. “They believe they are the last stand for America and [that] America is the white Christian nation. They believe they are what America is. And that kind of identity gets stronger as it loses—it becomes more self-righteous as it loses.”

The inexorable change coming to the Democratic Party could make the GOP even more reactionary. Biden has defined himself as a “transitional” figure, and demands are already building for a Democratic leadership corps that reflects the party’s increasing reliance on young people and people of color. It’s not hard to imagine that by 2024, Democrats will be led by presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent; vice-presidential nominee Pete Buttigieg, an openly gay man; and House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries, who would be the first Black person to hold that post. Much like Obama did in 2008, such a roster would symbolize a changing America in a way that inspires the coalition of transformation—but terrifies many in the coalition of restoration. “It would touch on everything that a lot of Trump supporters were reacting to when they supported him in 2016—this sense of feeling threatened by the [challenge] to white supremacy in the U.S,” Schaffner told me.

Smug hatred. Ignorance brandished as a weapon. Malice disguising itself as a governing philosophy.

Hang in there. That’s rough.

i felt, and feel, a lot of guilt because i have my mom and mrsdm doesnt have hers (or her dad)
we talked about it and i said i was sorry
she said i was an idiot (nicely and with a smile)
but she understood why it bothers me

i havent seen my brother’s family in a year or more - philadelphia
and my niece is coming for a visit from israel after 2 years. we wont see her either.
it’ll all be by zoom
my sister was able do drive down here more or less nonstop from north carolina - no overnight. - immediate laundry, shower etc - so we figured she was safe enough. stayed 2 weeks. that was good for mom.

it’s tough.
we cope

I’m seeing the difference here in the Midwest.

Blue counties - ie Cook in Illinois, Dane in Wisconsin - people are wearing masks in stores, bars are not crammed, folks seem to be careful even in parking lots.

Rural areas: bars are full of maskless rednecks shouting defiance at the TV. Parking lots are shouting war zones at Walmart.

The effects are being felt:

Think of it as evolution in action.

That’s insane. There’s 1.5 million people in Philly. I hadn’t heard those numbers before.

I know, RIGHT? :)

And I forgot to repost the link. The numbers are indeed insane, if they translate from registered voters to actual votes that get counted.

re: #118 i(m)p(each)sos

I have a lot of confidence that Trump cannot repeat what he did in 2016.

a lot of people are recognizing this from last time and are determined to not let it happen again.

your vote, every vote, does matter

Rep. Don Bacon certainly won’t. He’s a conservative first and the representative for NE-2 second.

To Rep. Bacon’s grudging credit, he did do this.

DHS does not work for the people, they work for Donald Trump. The letter is useless, because conservatives want to deport anyone who wasn’t born here, including foreign medical workers.

The genocide is deliberate. Perhaps Bacon’s opponent Kara Eastman could address this on her Twitter account, but I’m not on Twitter so I can’t reach her that way.

Memories of the 1948 election from Grandma Bacon.

They were at the County Democratic Party HQ waiting for the vote counts to come in. Had the radio on Union people BOOED when they projected Dewey the winner.

CBS commentator Kaltenborn said Dewey would give his victory speech at 9PM.

Didn’t happen. Truman surge outside of the East and Deep South.

Kaltenborn kept saying “When The Country Vote Comes In, Dewey would win handily”. The hall broke out in laughter.

Ohio was declared for Truman at midnight, the hall cheered. 3AM California was called for Truman and the beer kegs were set up.

Kaltenborn still insisting that the country vote would turn the tide for Dewey at 6AM the next morning…

yes and that’s the stunningly idiotic national response posture

Another random thought: one (I.e., me) has to wonder if Trump’s relatively mild case of COVID was due to some sort of prophylactic treatment regimen (?? Convalescent plasma??) he had (has) been receiving? IOW, some sort of preventative treatment unavailable to the public/plebes, but kept under wraps because The Orange Anus wanted to maintain his image as “COVID-proof Superman”…?

Early 2021 - after Democrats have retaken the Senate and the WH.

McConnell is fixated on packing the courts. He has no time to help the nation deal with the pandemic or Trump’s failures.

Trump is clueless and his lies are even more hollow when they don’t even pass the smell test. There’s no reason anyone should believe he’d pass a relief bill after the election. Why not pass one before when it mattered?

Because there’s no way the GOP controlled Senate passes anything - the same scenario we’ve had since May.

Instead… late March, at my brother’s house. 6 people present; other niece officiated with an on-line UCC ordination. The catered dinner, that they’d already paid for, became boxed meals given to a food bank for distribution. The band and video crew could keep their deposit if they if they spent the day delivering food bank boxes to the elderly.

We’ll have a proper reception when this is all over.

It’s one of those things that sounds great on paper, but for people north of 35 degrees N, the complaints that would start up as soon as people realize they’ll never see a summer sunset after 8 PM (but hey, they’ll have sunrise at 3:45 AM!) would be loud and persistent.

I dunno: Arnold’s running for Governor wasn’t *quite* a “lark”; - if I recall the history correctly, he had been pushing the CA GOP to let him front for public office for years: and for years, the Party had been pushing him off: happy enough to take his money, but hesitant to put him up for office because they thought he was way too much the “Hollywood liberal” to fit the Party Line (i.e. not a xenophobic, homophobic racist for whom political time had frozen in 1928); so he grabbed the opportunity afforded by the Gray Davis recall to run “on his own”, and won: for which the CA Republicans never forgave him….

It’s one of those things that sounds great on paper, but for people north of 35 degrees N, the complaints that would start up as soon as people realize they’ll never see a summer sunset after 8 PM (but hey, they’ll have sunrise at 3:45 AM!) would be loud and persistent.

Year-round DST might go over a little better, but sunrise at 9 AM won’t be welcome in the northern winter, either.

Yeah, I was there for a lot of this. Remember when Prop 187 passed, and the outrage in the state. I met Gray Davis way back in ‘92 in a law office, where he was doing the donations dance in front of a bunch of Los Angeles kingmakers.

Not impressed then. He really blew it, leading to the disastrous Governator experiment - about as close as California came to electing a Trump.

Only Arnie is actually kinda smart and has a soul. He worked for what he got. Not like rich-baby Trump.

The main problem with Gray Davis is that he so transparently viewed being CA governor exclusively as a stepping stone toward the presidency. That said, he was ratfucked to hell and back again by the W Bushies when the energy deregulation disaster hit.

I didn’t say I agreed with the majority of his positions, and he had no government experience, but he wasn’t all that Trump-like.

The reason why Asshole Ah-Nold is on my shit list is because of the way he fucked up the state disability determination service when he was Governor. He forced the entire staff to take a 20% pay cut by furloughing them one day a week. Money appropriated to process claims INSTEAD went to other state government servies—like taking care of that motherfather’s plane that he flew to Sacramento and back.

Cases backlogged and a lot of them wound up elsewhere, including on my desk but we had the same timeframe to process them.

The week after Jerry Brown took over the furlough was over and the cases were off my desk along with the pissed off people yelling about why it was taking so long to process the claims…

The problem is DST works well if you’re in the middle of a timezone.

We used to not do DST - only have EST all year, and it worked a lot better.

Sunk cost fallacy.

Anyway, the software would still work.

Most cell phones get their time from cell towers, which are calibrated to the NIST. NIST’s time broadcasts on WWV or WWVH have a bit which says “Daylight Saving Time.”

Not every area uses Daylight Saving Time anyway, so operating systems like Windows have a checkbox to click it off. Microsoft also has to push an update for the dates it starts and ends.

For the clocks in my house, none of them set automatically. I have to reset all of them twice a year.

As for agricultural areas, livestock don’t pay attention the the whinging of engineers and all their hard work to make Daylight Saving Time work in California, but not in Arizona, except on the Navajo Reservation, but not on the Hopi Reservation inside it.

Daylight Saving Time in northern areas mean children are waiting for school buses in full dark (and it’s also colder because it’s full dark).

Most of the landmass outside North America and Europe does not use Daylight Saving Time. Only a minority of the world’s population actually uses DST.

re: #265 Eric The Fruit Bat

I thought that cell towers got their time source from GPS, not WWV.

——

Master time from a GPS

A common source of accurate time for a master clock is a global positioning satellite (GPS) signal. Satellites in space broadcast precise time all over the world. This time is received from the atomic clock, which is located at the National Institute of Standards and Technology or NIST in Colorado. The master clock in a school or business must have an antenna located outdoors in order to receive the GPS time signal and synchronize to it. The master clock communicates with the GPS every hour to acquire the correct time, which it passes along to the other clocks within the environment.
Master time from a cellular phone tower

Cellular phone towers seem to be everywhere these days, and they serve a larger purpose beyond providing phone signals to hundreds of millions of cell phones. These towers also send out a time signal, which our cell phones receive to keep precise time. Master clocks also acquire these time signals, thanks to an internal module, which communicates with the tower, collects the time information, and passes it along to the clocks within the system. If you’re curious about where the cell tower gets it’s time — the atomic clock in Colorado is the source.

The same here. It requires no special planning, no experts, no intelligence. Denigrate “elites” as conservatives have done as long as conservatism has existed, and that’s all you need to do.

The “herd immunity” approach was definitely Boris Johnson’s initial approach. However, his scientific advisors managed to talk him out of it.

True, but the governor still gets to appoint a replacement until the election, that’s still one less vote in a close Senate. And then we could end up with the appointee actually winning the special election, which also happened with Brown.

Yes: I think MA had had a “til next general election” provision for replacing Senators, then changed it when they thought Teddy K was going to croak, since they didn’t want an (R) replacing him. But unfortunately, they got Scott Brown instead (until Warren got in).

Yep, quite quickly. The UK was in a stay-at-home lockdown by late March — I live city centre on an A road, a city-to-city 4-lane thoroughfare that usually has about a hundred coaches and buses an hour going both ways at rush-hour plus cars, taxis, vans, trucks, bicycles etc. I looked out the window at 6:00 p.m. and there was nothing but a plastic bag blowing down the road like a tumbleweed.

re: #264 KGxvi

Five day weeks, that gives us a 73 week calendar, 11 months at 6 weeks, one month at 7 weeks (let’s make it February to make up for the fact that it’s been short for so long).

Also, work weeks are now 3 days. Three days on, two days off.

Discordianism for the win.

As described in the Principia Discordia, the Discordian calendar has five 73-day seasons: Chaos, Discord, Confusion, Bureaucracy, and The Aftermath. The Discordian year is aligned with the Gregorian calendar and begins on January 1, thus Chaos 1, 3186 YOLD is January 1, 2020 Gregorian.

The Erisian week consists of five days: Sweetmorn, Boomtime, Pungenday, Prickle-Prickle, and Setting Orange. The days of the week are named after the five basic Discordian elements: Sweet, Boom, Pungent, Prickle, and Orange. There are 73 of these weeks per year and every year begins with Sweetmorn.

Every fourth year in the Discordian calendar, starting in 2 YOLD, an extra day is inserted between Chaos 59 and Chaos 60 called St. Tib’s Day. This is because 4 years + 1 day = 5, a holy number, but the Discordian leap year also coincides with the Gregorian one. The result of this is that any given day of the year in the Discordian calendar may be taken to correspond to the same day of the year in the Gregorian calendar, and vice versa, although some users of the calendar believe that it is tied to the Julian calendar and so will diverge from the Gregorian in 3266 YOLD (CE 2100). St. Tib’s day is considered outside the Discordian week.

There are Apostle Holydays on the 5th day of each season, named after the 5 Discordian apostles: Mungday, for Hung Mung; Mojoday, for Dr Van Van Mojo; Syaday, for Sri Syadasti; Zaraday, for Zarathud; and Maladay, for Malaclypse the Elder. There are also Season Holydays on the 50th of each season: Chaoflux, Discoflux, Confuflux, Bureflux, and Afflux.

The cell towers could also get their time source from their internet backbones as well, via NTP - it would certainly be cheaper than equipping each cell tower with a specialized WWVL receiver that feeds a digital time source into the tower (especially if the tower is hosting multiple cellular providers.)

That’s what your Windows boxes use to set their time - and adjust - automatically.

Over the past five days, the on-time rate for ballots in 17 postal districts representing 10 battleground states and 151 electoral votes was 89.1 percent — 5.9 percentage points lower than the national average. The idea is WWV is the source of all good things like time. GPS satellites are calibrated to WWV, and many cell companies use GPS to receive the time. Verizon uses a different system but also traces back to WWV, however, they are going to phase out that system in 2022. (They have repeatedly pushed back the date they would phase it out.)

I have to be honest here. I don’t think the Scottish Government (and also the other devolved parliaments in Wales and Northern Ireland) are doing things that much differently or doing that much better than England in terms of combatting the coronavirus.

However, the difference in the devolved parliaments seems to be a heightened sense of publically perceived transparency in the public officials involved. For example, Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of the Scottish Government, does her daily briefings on the Coronavirus, in a very Glaswegian no-nonsense style. That presumes the cabled network lag from the NPT Stratum 1 source can be precisely characterised. For most desktop and mobile phone applications etc. being half a second out in either direction is not critical, for a lot of niggly technical purposes that’s unacceptably sloppy.

GPS time signals can be assumed accurate to within fractions of a microsecond since the transmission path length is known to within a metre or two and compensation applied. If better than that is required then further calculations involving airpath changes to the speed of the radio transmission can be made to correct the time data even further. This of course can be further improved by using a dozen or more GPS downlinks together.

A long time back (not quite pre-GPS but close) I was involved in designing an accurate time clock system for financial transactions recording with a required accuracy of plus/minus 0.5 milliseconds. That used a broadcast time signal with geographical corrections to allow for speed-of-light delays from the transmitter to fine-tune the clock.

GPS is currently the main practical application of both of Einstein’s theories of relativity, as both special and general relativity must be accounted for in order for the time signals to be accurate enough to enable the system to any usable resolution.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò is at it again:

Mister President,

Allow me to address you at this hour in which the fate of the whole world is being threatened by a global conspiracy against God and humanity. I write to you as an Archbishop, as a Successor of the Apostles, as the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America. I am writing to you in the midst of the silence of both civil and religious authorities. May you accept these words of mine as the “voice of one crying out in the desert” (Jn 1:23).

A global plan called the Great Reset is underway. Its architect is a global élite that wants to subdue all of humanity, imposing coercive measures with which to drastically limit individual freedoms and those of entire populations. In several nations this plan has already been approved and financed; in others it is still in an early stage. Behind the world leaders who are the accomplices and executors of this infernal project, there are unscrupulous characters who finance the World Economic Forum and Event 201, promoting their agenda.

The purpose of the Great Reset is the imposition of a health dictatorship aiming at the imposition of liberticidal measures, hidden behind tempting promises of ensuring a universal income and cancelling individual debt. The price of these concessions from the International Monetary Fund will be the renunciation of private property and adherence to a program of vaccination against Covid-19 and Covid-21 promoted by Bill Gates with the collaboration of the main pharmaceutical groups. Beyond the enormous economic interests that motivate the promoters of the Great Reset, the imposition of the vaccination will be accompanied by the requirement of a health passport and a digital ID, with the consequent contact tracing of the population of the entire world. Those who do not accept these measures will be confined in detention camps or placed under house arrest, and all their assets will be confiscated.

Mr. President, I imagine that you are already aware that in some countries the Great Reset will be activated between the end of this year and the first trimester of 2021. For this purpose, further lockdowns are planned, which will be officially justified by a supposed second and third wave of the pandemic. You are well aware of the means that have been deployed to sow panic and legitimize draconian limitations on individual liberties, artfully provoking a world-wide economic crisis. In the intentions of its architects, this crisis will serve to make the recourse of nations to the Great Reset irreversible, thereby giving the final blow to a world whose existence and very memory they want to completely cancel. But this world, Mr. President, includes people, affections, institutions, faith, culture, traditions, and ideals: people and values that do not act like automatons, who do not obey like machines, because they are endowed with a soul and a heart, because they are tied together by a spiritual bond that draws its strength from above, from that God that our adversaries want to challenge, just as Lucifer did at the beginning of time with his “non serviam.”

Until a few months ago, it was easy to smear as “conspiracy theorists” those who denounced these terrible plans, which we now see being carried out down to the smallest detail. No one, up until last February, would ever have thought that, in all of our cities, citizens would be arrested simply for wanting to walk down the street, to breathe, to want to keep their business open, to want to go to church on Sunday. Yet now it is happening all over the world, even in picture-postcard Italy that many Americans consider to be a small enchanted country, with its ancient monuments, its churches, its charming cities, its characteristic villages. And while the politicians are barricaded inside their palaces promulgating decrees like Persian satraps, businesses are failing, shops are closing, and people are prevented from living, traveling, working, and praying. The disastrous psychological consequences of this operation are already being seen, beginning with the suicides of desperate entrepreneurs and of our children, segregated from friends and classmates, told to follow their classes while sitting at home alone in front of a computer.

In Sacred Scripture, Saint Paul speaks to us of “the one who opposes” the manifestation of the mystery of iniquity, the kathèkon (2 Thess 2:6-7). In the religious sphere, this obstacle to evil is the Church, and in particular the papacy; in the political sphere, it is those who impede the establishment of the New World Order.

As is now clear, the one who occupies the Chair of Peter has betrayed his role from the very beginning in order to defend and promote the globalist ideology, supporting the agenda of the deep church, who chose him from its ranks.

Pope Francis wasn’t available for comment.

It really bugs me that he’s the symbol of democratic socialism at this point in America. I seriously doubt Mike Harrington would have wanted anything to do with him. He was everything Bernie isn’t.

I really hate what he’s done with younger people in this country. Am I glad that they’re interested in politics? Sure but I’m not happy with how he’s sold politics to them as an all or nothing game.

I’ve heard about that. Apparently a lot of doctors work some schedule like that because it’s best for mental health/productivity.

I’d be good with a four day work week and letting people pick whether they go MTTF, M-T, or T-F

What I’ve seen is two shifts of workers, one MTWT and the other TWThF. That gives five day coverage but progress work 4 10 hour days in a row.

I like that.

White Americans are in no danger but this is the gotterdamerung of “White America,” and the system of inherited privilege for which it has been the framework since colonial times. The local elites have been in a wild panic for decades, with many inheritable businesses having collapsed outright because of online sales and the related technologies that make the Big Boxes possible. The others, whose businesses are not so easily out-sourced or conducted virtually, face stiff competition from demographic sectors that were formerly suppressed and of no consequence. There is also the problem of generational decay that I have highlighted from time to time. This is a real thing, the result of culturally embedded flaws in the lifestyle of the hinterland upper crust. Their fear is real, too, almost palpable. It has been deepening since the Civil Rights movement and we are approaching a climax. I have actually been waiting, and working, for this all my life but I have gained a useful understanding of these issues only recently, ie in the last 15-20 years.
That climax might be only days away.

re: #315 Eric The Fruit Bat

Maybe. Remember that all providers will always take the most inexpensive route to deploy their networks, and if they can cut corners by using something that has a high-enough reliability (like NTP), they will - I haven’t heard of any attacks against NTP services.

NTP server misuse and abuse (Wikipedia)

NTP server misuse and abuse covers a number of practices which cause damage or degradation to a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server, ranging from flooding it with traffic (effectively a DDoS attack) or violating the server’s access policy or the NTP rules of engagement. One incident was branded NTP vandalism in an open letter from Poul-Henning Kamp to the router manufacturer D-Link in 2006. This term has later been extended by others to retroactively include other incidents. There is, however, no evidence that any of these problems are deliberate vandalism. They are more usually caused by shortsighted or poorly chosen default configurations.

A deliberate form of NTP server abuse came to note at the end of 2013, when NTP servers were used as part of amplification denial-of-service attacks. Some NTP servers would respond to a single “monlist” UDP request packet, with packets describing up to 600 associations. By using a request with a spoofed IP address attackers could direct an amplified stream of packets at a network. This resulted in one of the largest distributed denial-of-service attacks known at the time.

(Internal link goes to Ars Technica with an article on a massive DDOS attack against Cloudflare’s NTP service). That article also details a previous attack on the anti-spam site Spamhaus.

From the last paragraph in the Ars Technica article:

Further, a recently discovered vulnerability in NTP allows for amplification attacks similar to those previously performed with DNS, exploiting a command in the protocol called “monlist” that sends the IP addresses of the last 600 devices connected to the server. These requests, sent via a packet with the forged address of the victim, send a torrent of data back at the targeted site. Like DNS reflection attacks, NTP attacks can be diminished in effectiveness by network operators if they configure firewalls to block external requests.

Read the news in the morning newspaper and do the crossword puzzle, if I need to go to the store take my checkbook or get cash from the bank teller, my finger still can work the dial on my telephone (bonus: I never get spam texts because I do not have a Telex machine connected to my telephone), still can listen to the radio (well, KMOR Scottsbluff, rock, or KTNE Alliance, NPR, KAAQ Alliance, C&W - everything else here is right wing and Christian hate radio).

I’ve been seeing a lot of pushback lately from brits about this actually being a thing… but it’s definitely been something that’s stuck to him for a long time.

I will say that Corbyn does seem to channel the stupid-left vibe pretty well, and Labour as a party doesn’t make any real sense to me as an American. That’s the R vs. D lens of the world, of course, but no one in any party in London seems to have their head screwed on straight re Brexit, which seems to have been pushed across the line by both large parties despite half the population knowing better.

Corbyn has never been personally accused of anti-Semitism. Other than by people close to the real anti-Semitic party in the UK, the Tories.

(Yes, various people in the party have, to be polite, some pretty dodgy views, and the party, as an institution, fucked up its handling of reports of anti-Semitism).

When Edwina Curry said that Michel Howard was unfit to be party leader because there was “something if the night” about him just what exactly do you think she was saying?

Power outage caused by squirrel temporarily shuts down Douglas County election office (Omaha World-Herald)

Before the squirrel bar-b-qued itself, there was a three-hour line to get in for early voting in Douglas County.

A power outage at the Douglas County Election Commission on Friday caused officials to temporarily shut down the office.

The outage was caused by a squirrel that had interacted with electrical equipment, according to the Omaha Power District.

But the election commissioner said that everyone who wanted to cast an early ballot will still be able to do so.

Omaha Public Power District crews restored power about 4:50 p.m. Friday afternoon to the election office at 12220 W. Center Road. However, the office’s phones and computers were still down, said Valerie Stoj, a spokeswoman.

Voters who were still in line Friday were asked to fill out forms that were expected to be processed through the afternoon and evening, said Brian Kruse, Douglas County Election Commissioner. They were being asked to return Saturday morning to pick up their ballots at a dock on the east end of the building.

The office will be open for an extended period Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was originally set to close at 1 p.m. (more)

I really hate what he’s done with younger people in this country. Am I glad that they’re interested in politics? Sure but I’m not happy with how he’s sold politics to them as an all or nothing game.

I doubt the Parkland kids are listening to him.

Earlier in the day, facing a three-hour wait to get into the election office, Omaha injury attorney Aaron Brown dialed up Papa John’s and ordered four pizzas from his spot in line.

The pizzas were delivered to the election commission itself, but Brown eventually received his order and handed three boxes to strangers, sharing slices with some of the hundreds of other people waiting to cast their votes ahead of Election Day.

The problem is DST works well if you’re in the middle of a timezone.

In Indiana, we’re starting to get daylight somewhere around 830 right now. IT SUCKS SO MUCH.

We used to not do DST - only have EST all year, and it worked a lot better.

Thanks, Mitch Daniels.

Scientists find Madagascar chameleon last seen 100 years ago (AP, with photo of the elusive critter)

Scientists say they have found an elusive chameleon species that was last spotted in Madagascar 100 years ago.

Researchers from Madagascar and Germany said Friday that they discovered several living specimens of Voeltzkow’s chameleon during an expedition to the northwest of the African island nation.

In a report published in the journal Salamandra, the team led by scientists from the Bavarian Natural History Collections ZSM said genetic analysis determined that the species is closely related to Labord’s chameleon.

The replies to those posts follow an all too familiar pattern.

Specifically, like in climate change graphs, those who want to deny reality look at every little squiggle and try to make a case for their own beliefs.

E.g., one can look at a smoothing curve of deaths and conclude that deaths have leveled off. But only if compared to a single week (last week, in which there was a noticeable spike on one day, a reporting anomaly.)

If anyone can run up the score in the Philly metro, it’s Joe.

setting up a kitchen is expensive. i’ve lived in cheap rental housing before. refrigerators are not dependable, which means you are taking a chance keeping more than 20 bucks’ worth of food in one. counter space is typically minimal. it easily cost a thousand bucks to set up a kitchen in terms of pots, pans, utensils. Fuck, I just 300 bucks on a bread maker. it’s possible to make bread without one, but it’s damned tedious and it’s still not all that cheap. it’s hours of idle time proofing stuff, then oven time, cooling time, etc. If you’re a stay-at-home, you can do it. If you’re working a couple of full-time jobs because you’re getting paid 7 bucks an hour, good luck.

re: #118 i(m)p(each)sos

I have a lot of confidence that Trump cannot repeat what he did in 2016.

msnbc is wringing its hands about trump having a “massive red wave” on election day. they seem to forget that democrats are actually going to be voting on election day as well, and they’re certainly motivated.

I finally got my electricity back about an hour ago. Yard still needs a decent bit of work and I’ve probably lost $100 of food in my fridge but could have been a lot worse.

same here. i didn’t lose a hundred bucks’ worth, but I’d just driven all the damned way to Seneca because the boar’s head lady told me they still got olive loaf, and the next day, power went out. I decided 25 bucks’ worth of food wasn’t worth chancing food poisoning over, so almost everything went.
