Recently, Annunziata Rees-Mogg took a moment out of her busy schedule of managing her family mansion and hefty stock portfolio to chide an unspecified public for eating ready-made oven chips rather than the marginally cheaper option of raw potatoes. Her implicit message - that choosing the latter is a symptom of laziness, stupidity or both - telegraphs the idea that the struggles of poverty are a choice continually taken by feckless plebs who waste their money on fags and football tickets. Why should we (and the “we” here is important) indulge such irresponsible behaviour? it asks. Why should the state pick up the tab for individual moral laxity?

This very rural voter drove our ballots sixteen miles into the county seat.
Because of the way the delivery routes from the sorting centers are in the Panhandle, for me to mail a letter from Broadwater to Bridgeport requires this route. Broadwater is at the end of the delivery route which comes from North Platte up US-26. The truck arrives in the morning, sits all day here, then returns, picking up mail along the way.
Bridgeport is at the end of the route going east down US-26 from Scottsbluff, and they are last on their route.
So a letter from here to Bridgeport actually takes the route Broadwater-North Platte-Denver-Scottsbluff-Bridgeport. (That was before DeJoy’s fuquery, the route hasn’t changed though the mail has slowed.)
Or, I can drop off ballots when we go to town for other stuff, which we did.

But it took me a lot of arguing to make that case. This year, the only polls that look bad are the grossly biased ones. FL is getting close, but PA really is not. And what looks to be happening in turnout argues for polls to be undercounting Dems.

I can sort of vouch for the PA stuff. One of Philly’s western counties, Montgomery, tends to lean GOP and they seem to have buyer’s remorse. I’m not sure about Bucks County, which is north of the city. It’s pretty MAGAty and I don’t see that changing, but who knows?

My niece’s wedding was originally supposed to be in early May; hundreds of guests, synagogue and rabbi, country club reception, catered dinner, live band, video crew etc.
Instead… late March, at my brother’s house. 6 people present; other niece officiated with an on-line ULC ordination. The catered dinner, that they’d already paid for, became boxed meals given to a food bank for distribution. The band and video crew could keep their deposit if they if they spent the day delivering food bank boxes to the elderly.
We’ll have a proper reception when this is all over.

- dangermom (my mom) lives 8 miles from us. she’s 92
- mrsdm is extremely high risk due to her lung condition and surgery a couple of years back. doc says she should be following the rules with zero tolerance, after all it’s a respiratory infection.
except for me driving her to a doctor now and again, mom never goes out. she’s got real good at watching zoom lectures.
i go over to mom’s every wednesday with groceries
mrsdm and i bring take out every sunday (cause we’re toast after ponding all day)
we never touch mom. we dont wear masks
we do eat at a small-ish kitchen table.
we think we’ve created a fairly good operational ‘pod’ of the three of us.
sure anything could happen. we’re very careful at home and ‘assume’ the protocols we’ve been following (and what we have not been doing) has been working.
mrsdm’s parents (also 92 and 93) live in NJ.
we’ve missed both their birthdays, a wedding last week that they were at, and there won’t be our annual pilgrimage to NJ and Massachusetts this holiday season.
i’ve gone over lots of scenarios on how to get her safely to NJ and back. - driving, renting an RV, flying, whatever.
there is no way that doesnt significantly risk getting mrsdm infected, or infecting her parents, or bringing something back and infecting dangermom.
as much as it hurts, it’s just not worth it.

I can sort of vouch for the PA stuff. One of Philly’s western counties, Montgomery, tends to lean GOP and they seem have buyer’s remorse. I’m not sure about Bucks County, which is north of the city. It’s pretty MAGAty and I don’t see that changing, but who knows?

Less active third-party candidates (Johnson got 146,715 votes, Stein got 49,941, and Trump won by 44,292 votes) and Clinton might well have won the state.
It was the narrowest possible way Trump could have squeaked in, and then he somehow ran the table and did it the same way in Michigan and Wisconsin.
The factors are so different this year. I have a lot of confidence that Trump cannot repeat what he did in 2016.

Enjoyed getting out and taking a walk earlier. Did wonders for my mental state. Amusingly the story on NPR while I drove to my walking place of choice had a piece on election anxiety.
One item mentioned was the fact that people’s coping skills are better than we think because we descend from people who underestimate their skills rather than overestimate them. The people who just know they can jump that gap, or whatever, didn’t leave as many descendants.

Random thought I had: was Trump contracting COVID the absolute worst thing that could have happened? He clearly feels bulletproof, and the Admin has abandoned all pretenses of trying to control the virus. As a result, we are going to hit numbers never dreamt of in terms of daily positives and the like. Maybe deaths don’t hit the April peaks and the death rate is lower, but 2k dead/day seems like a foregone conclusion, with nothing done to stem the tide (at the federal level at least) until (dog willing) Biden is inaugurated.

I have been struggling to read this site and a boatload of others in Safari on my iPad. Phone is okay, iMac is perfect. I keep getting “can’t load this site” errors constantly. Tried killing both javascript and flushing the cache. Nada.
Restarting the iPad seems to help, but the problem eventually creeps back in. Real close to switching to Chrome on the iPad for the time being.

How does the on board storage affect how a page loads? Wouldn’t that be a function of the available ram? On the iphone 11 it was 4Gb, the 12 pro has 6Gb but the other 12 models are still only 4Gb. The iphone 10 I think had 3Gb.

My niece’s wedding was originally supposed to be in early May; hundreds of guests, synagogue and rabbi, country club reception, catered dinner, live band, video crew etc.
Instead… late March, at my brother’s house. 6 people present; other niece officiated with an on-line UCC ordination. The catered dinner, that they’d already paid for, became boxed meals given to a food bank for distribution. The band and video crew could keep their deposit if they if they spent the day delivering food bank boxes to the elderly.
We’ll have a proper reception when this is all over.

The reason why Asshole Ah-Nold is on my shit list is because of the way he fucked up the state disability determination service when he was Governor. He forced the entire staff to take a 20% pay cut by furloughing them one day a week. Money appropriated to process claims INSTEAD went to other state government servies—like taking care of that motherfather’s plane that he flew to Sacramento and back.
Cases backlogged and a lot of them wound up elsewhere, including on my desk but we had the same timeframe to process them.
The week after Jerry Brown took over the furlough was over and the cases were off my desk along with the pissed off people yelling about why it was taking so long to process the claims…

In Colorado, at the height of winter, sun is up around 730 AM and sunset is 440 or so. I’d 10x rather have sunrise at 830 AM, with sunset at 540.

Most cell phones get their time from cell towers, which are calibrated to the NIST. NIST’s time broadcasts on WWV or WWVH have a bit which says “Daylight Saving Time.”
Not every area uses Daylight Saving Time anyway, so operating systems like Windows have a checkbox to click it off. Microsoft also has to push an update for the dates it starts and ends.
For the clocks in my house, none of them set automatically. I have to reset all of them twice a year.
As for agricultural areas, livestock don’t pay attention the the whinging of engineers and all their hard work to make Daylight Saving Time work in California, but not in Arizona, except on the Navajo Reservation, but not on the Hopi Reservation inside it.
Daylight Saving Time in northern areas mean children are waiting for school buses in full dark (and it’s also colder because it’s full dark).
Most of the landmass outside North America and Europe does not use Daylight Saving Time. Only a minority of the world’s population actually uses DST.

DST is also not a problem of north-south, it’s also a problem of east-west. I live near the eastern boundary of Mythical Time Zone (it’s only a few miles from here). As such, the sun comes up much earlier in the morning by the clock (DST or not) than it does over on the west side of Utah.
We could go like the People’s Republic of China and just put the whole country on one time zone with no DST. That solves everything (and they don’t seem to have any software issues with that either).

The cell towers could also get their time source from their internet backbones as well, via NTP - it would certainly be cheaper than equipping each cell tower with a specialized WWVL receiver that feeds a digital time source into the tower (especially if the tower is hosting multiple cellular providers.)
That’s what your Windows boxes use to set their time - and adjust - automatically.

That’s what your Windows boxes use to set their time - and adjust - automatically.
The idea is WWV is the source of all good things like time. GPS satellites are calibrated to WWV, and many cell companies use GPS to receive the time. Verizon uses a different system but also traces back to WWV, however, they are going to phase out that system in 2022. (They have repeatedly pushed back the date they would phase it out.)

I have to be honest here. I don’t think the Scottish Government (and also the other devolved parliaments in Wales and Northern Ireland) are doing things that much differently or doing that much better than England in terms of combatting the coronavirus.
However, the difference in the devolved parliaments seems to be a heightened sense of publically perceived transparency in the public officials involved. For example, Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of the Scottish Government, does her daily briefings on the Coronavirus, in a very Glaswegian no-nonsense style. That presumes the cabled network lag from the NPT Stratum 1 source can be precisely characterised. For most desktop and mobile phone applications etc. being half a second out in either direction is not critical, for a lot of niggly technical purposes that’s unacceptably sloppy.
GPS time signals can be assumed accurate to within fractions of a microsecond since the transmission path length is known to within a metre or two and compensation applied. If better than that is required then further calculations involving airpath changes to the speed of the radio transmission can be made to correct the time data even further. This of course can be further improved by using a dozen or more GPS downlinks together.
A long time back (not quite pre-GPS but close) I was involved in designing an accurate time clock system for financial transactions recording with a required accuracy of plus/minus 0.5 milliseconds. That used a broadcast time signal with geographical corrections to allow for speed-of-light delays from the transmitter to fine-tune the clock.

GPS is currently the main practical application of both of Einstein’s theories of relativity, as both special and general relativity must be accounted for in order for the time signals to be accurate enough to enable the system to any usable resolution.

NTP server misuse and abuse covers a number of practices which cause damage or degradation to a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server, ranging from flooding it with traffic (effectively a DDoS attack) or violating the server’s access policy or the NTP rules of engagement. One incident was branded NTP vandalism in an open letter from Poul-Henning Kamp to the router manufacturer D-Link in 2006. This term has later been extended by others to retroactively include other incidents. There is, however, no evidence that any of these problems are deliberate vandalism. They are more usually caused by shortsighted or poorly chosen default configurations.
A deliberate form of NTP server abuse came to note at the end of 2013, when NTP servers were used as part of amplification denial-of-service attacks. Some NTP servers would respond to a single “monlist” UDP request packet, with packets describing up to 600 associations. By using a request with a spoofed IP address attackers could direct an amplified stream of packets at a network. Power outage caused by squirrel temporarily shuts down Douglas County election office (Omaha World-Herald)
Before the squirrel bar-b-qued itself, there was a three-hour line to get in for early voting in Douglas County.
A power outage at the Douglas County Election Commission on Friday caused officials to temporarily shut down the office.
The outage was caused by a squirrel that had interacted with electrical equipment, according to the Omaha Power District.
But the election commissioner said that everyone who wanted to cast an early ballot will still be able to do so.
Omaha Public Power District crews restored power about 4:50 p.m. Friday afternoon to the election office at 12220 W. Center Road. However, the office’s phones and computers were still down, said Valerie Stoj, a spokeswoman.
Voters who were still in line Friday were asked to fill out forms that were expected to be processed through the afternoon and evening, said Brian Kruse, Douglas County Election Commissioner. They were being asked to return Saturday morning to pick up their ballots at a dock on the east end of the building.
The office will be open for an extended period Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was originally set to close at 1 p.m. (more)
Kruse said any voters who said they could not return Saturday were going to be helped Friday evening.

Researchers from Madagascar and Germany said Friday that they discovered several living specimens of Voeltzkow’s chameleon during an expedition to the northwest of the African island nation.
In a report published in the journal Salamandra, the team led by scientists from the Bavarian Natural History Collections ZSM said genetic analysis determined that the species is closely related to Labord’s chameleon.

Specifically, like in climate change graphs, those who want to deny reality look at every little squiggle and try to make a case for their own beliefs.
E.g., one can look at a smoothing curve of deaths and conclude that deaths have leveled off. But only if compared to a single week (last week, in which there was a noticeable spike on one day, a reporting anomaly.)

setting up a kitchen is expensive. i’ve lived in cheap rental housing before. refrigerators are not dependable, which means you are taking a chance keeping more than 20 bucks’ worth of food in one. counter space is typically minimal. it easily cost a thousand bucks to set up a kitchen in terms of pots, pans, utensils. Fuck, I just 300 bucks on a bread maker. it’s possible to make bread without one, but it’s damned tedious and it’s still not all that cheap. it’s hours of idle time proofing stuff, then oven time, cooling time, etc. If you’re a stay-at-home, you can do it. If you’re working a couple of full-time jobs because you’re getting paid 7 bucks an hour, good luck.

I’ve been spending a lot of time staring at PA election results from 2016, and the longer and harder I stare at them, the more I realize just what a fluke it was that Trump pulled out an EC win at all.
A smidge more turnout in Philadelphia and Clinton would have won the state.
Less active third-party candidates (Johnson got 146,715 votes, Stein got 49,941, and Trump won by 44,292 votes) and Clinton might well have won the state.
It was the narrowest possible way Trump could have squeaked in, and then he somehow ran the table and did it the same way in Michigan and Wisconsin.
The factors are so different this year. I have a lot of confidence that Trump cannot repeat what he did in 2016.
msnbc is wringing its hands about trump having a “massive red wave” on election day. they seem to forget that democrats are actually going to be voting on election day as well, and they’re certainly motivated.
