Fascinating info on Laura Ingalls: I’d never heard of her (no loss for a Nazi) - ignominious obscurity is about all those creeps really deserve. I’d guess though, that there were probably a lot more Nazi sympathizers around before the war than we would like to imagine: it’s good to be reminded of some of the more-malodorous parts of history some times. You know the Senate Repubs violated committee rules and broke the “Biden Rule” to ram through a SCOTUS nominee less than two weeks before the election? Yeah, expect the media to have totally forgotten all that to react with horror at any suggestion that a Senate Dem majority would alter the Senate rules in order to bypass Repub obstructionism.

The Bund was pretty active in NYC before the war; they even held a big Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden.

The Nazi Rally in Madison Square Garden

Meyer Lansky and his minions took regular breaks from their money-making criming to go to Bund meetings and beat the crap out of as many Nazis as possible.

Based upon 538’s interactive map, it looks like NC will be the bellwether state this year. If Biden wins there, especially on Election Night, then the race may very well be over before midnight. Hell, Donny could win PA and FL and still lose the election.

That’s exactly why. I haven’t seen any trend of Clinton to Trump voters but Biden has gotten former Trump voters. And I understand why they’re quiet. I feel good about NC. The popular governor should give Joe and Cunningham positive coattails. I do think NC is slowly becoming a little more like us here in VA. Georgia too. Florida’s always gonna be a wildcard but the other two I think follow Virginia back. Remember LBJ said he lost the South for a generation but not forever. Some of it is coming home and that’s bad news for the GOP.

No offense Joe but I think you’re being a little over-dramatic to call Pennsylvania lost based on phone calls. There’s nothing to suggest that Pennsylvania is moving away from Biden at this point. I’m not trying to dismiss your experience on the phone and thank you for making calls- my anxiety about making phone calls to strangers has gone up recently but I feel very good about Pennsylvania. I’m gonna agree with Joe that PA is likely lost this go around, but that’s because I think it’s the state most susceptible to any judicial dickery that the WH/PA GOP have up their sleeves. It seems to be the one state most likely to end up with an asterisk next to it when the counting is finished.

Call me crazy but I think a 400+ EV win could be in the cards. I keep on going back to this but Covid is our everyday reality. I think a lot about it. I think about the lives lost. I think about how Trump from the start acted like it was no big deal. The WaPo had an article yesterday and I still need to read it that had the story of one family who experienced Covid after their loved one got diagnosed with it around the same time Trump did. Needless to say, their loved one didn’t feel “:20 years younger” and sadly passed away. Trump’s mishandling of Covid will be why he will be defeated on Tuesday and why those of us who remember these times will rightfully point to him for being the monster he is.

Yeah as much as I get annoyed at what I think is doom and gloom, I genuinely get it. I really thought I was going to be toasting to Trump being defeated in 2016 and celebrating the first woman elected President. I really wanted that for my Grandma who is now gone. But this time, I really do think something is happening. I always had a feeling deep down even during what have been some dark days that Trump’s collapse was going to be spectacular and we’re only a few days away. A lot of people scoffed at first taking back the House and then impeaching him but here we are.

Here’s a few things I believe about next Tuesday:

- I believe that Trump will get his wish and the election will be “over” on Election Night

- I believe that he’s going to lose to Biden by 300+ EC votes and a huge PV loss, probably eclipsing that which he suffered to Hillary four years ago

- I believe one or more states listed as “likely” for Biden will end up being “won” by Trump in such fashion that nobody but the reddest MAGAts will believe it was legit

- I believe Biden will pick up most of the states that Hillary lost in 2016 and pick up one or more red/purple states

- I believe that one or more “at-risk” Republicans will manage to win despite Trump losing their states

- I believe Senate Dems will win 52+ seats, ending a decade of Republican mismanagement despite Yertle winning another term

- I believe that no matter how big the night is for Dems, Repubs will insist (as they did after ‘06/’08) that the message of the election was that they strayed too far from “conservative” principles and so they must take another hard right swing before the midterms

- Oh, and I believe no matter how badly Biden whoops Trump’s ass, Repubs and pundits alike will insist that doesn’t constitute a “mandate” and he has to seek the assistance of Congressional Republicans if he wants to he doesn’t want to look like a “failed president.”

Ivanka declared herself prolife recently. She’s definitely running and I know Joe thinks she’ll win the hearts of the GOP faithful but I just don’t see it. “Biden’s win isn’t a rejection of conservatism.” The thing is with the pundit class though is they’ve lost a lot of credibility by enabling a lot of this show. TBH I see the GOP headed for a brutal decade after Trump. The Depression really hurt their brand a lot after Hoover. I see Covid doing the same especially as they continue to have morons like Noem, Don Jr, and other likely 2024 contenders downplaying it. I also think the coalition that elects Biden will not stay home in 2022. Now do I expect to lose some seats in 2022? Yeah I do because that’s usually what happens to the in party power but I do think we’ll retain the House and maybe even somehow manage to do what the GOP did and actually gain some Senate seats since the 2022 map is more favorable- think Ohio, Florida, Georgia(remember Warnock’s is the special), Wisconsin, Arizona (again also a special), Iowa,. I also see Pelosi handing the Speaker reigns to Hakeem Jeffries. We haven’t had an African-American Speaker and I’ve been very impressed by this guy with his handling of the media but also his working as an impeachment manager.

Now that I think about it, I have a few other beliefs:

- I believe that the images of mail ballots being dumped into piles or locked up in mail trucks will haunt the Repubs for the next 2-4 years as they count the casualties of Donny’s war against “fraud”

- I believe you’re gonna see Republicans suddenly screaming about “counting all the votes” and pushing states to accept ballots past the current deadlines

- I believe total voter turnout is gonna shock the fuck out of people across the political spectrum, leading to speculation about what it could mean for the country going forward if they can maintain even a fraction of such for future elections

- I believe we will never get a concession speech from Trump, no matter how badly the loss is. That the only thing we can look forward to is a press release, put out sometime between Election Night and December when states start certifying their results, insisting in the most passive-aggressive fashion possible that Biden “cheated” his way to victory and that while they don’t agree with the results they have exhausted their legal means of challenging them. And topping the whole thing with conspiracy theories about Chinese hackers and Russian agents, for which Congress must immediately begin an investigation because “the people have questions!”

What’s interesting is they might be in danger of losing the larger states of the deep south. Georgia and Texas aren’t just in play this year. They’re in for the long haul. The GOP is going to rue the day that they decided to become a party that panders to the whims of white nativism. Say what you will about W but the man at least saw that Hispanics and Asians were growing as a demographic and thought it would be politically smart to make the GOP a welcoming place for them. That doesn’t mean he was a good President but it does show that his awareness of the country was a lot more higher than Trump or even Romney’s ever was.

This might very well be the major party realignment that people foresaw in the wake of the ‘08 election, which (unfortunately) got smothered in the billion metric tons of bullshit that was the “Tea Party.” There’s no real equiv this go around, no “populist” movement that can be sold as “bipartisan” because a few conservative Dems clutch their pearls while whining about “job-killing taxes” or “economic anxiety.” Crazy Uncle Liberty is not leading the troops against “runaway spending” or “crushing debt.” No, the crises we face going forward stem from a total lack of leadership from the top all the way down to the fuckin’ roots. And there’s no TARP bill that the pundits can say “everybody” hated, there’s the CARES Act that Mitch will likely sit on all the way to the final gavel before he shuffles off to the Minority Leader podium.

This wasn’t a case of Dubya being “in over his head” and “caught unawares.” This was a criminal lack of leadership from a man who should never have had the job, aided and abetted by a pack of crooks who exploited his presidency in every way they could.

The concept of all Republican arguments being axiomatically dishonest needs to get traction.

After all, conservatism consists of exactly one proposition: there must be in-groups the law protects but does not bind, and out-groups the law binds but does not protect.

Republicans haven’t quite worked themselves up to admitting this openly, which leads to the axiomatic dishonesty referred to above — it’s all bafflegab designed to obscure the essential moral thuggishness of conservatism.

Within 12 months of being in office, there will be enough orchestrated anti-Biden efforts coming from the usual sources that that faux scandals will consume the media.

Now, if the new-and-improved-degraded SCOTUS rules to allow states to outlaw abortions, then that might actually stick around until the following election.

TEXAS: Hey, Californicators and other coastal elites! Come over here instead! We got good jobs and the housing prices aren’t insane! Har har har! Hey, big businesses, come over here, we’ve got good workers and low taxes! Har har har!

The problem for the Repubs is that it’s not just hatred of Trump that is fueling all this. If it was, then assholes like Graham wouldn’t be sweating reelection and states like Texas and Georgia wouldn’t be seen as competitive for the first time in ages. In a lot of ways, one could argue that the party as a whole spent the bulk of this year making the case for why they should never be trusted with federal-level control ever again. A perception that is only likely to be enhanced should the ACA be struck down or RvW “returned to the states” because of their 11th hour power grab on the USSC bench.

It’s not incorrect to state that what Mitch and his cohorts have spent this year doing is waking a sleeping giant…and filling it with a terrible resolve.

Problem is, Texas and Georgia are famous for voter disenfranchisement. We already see that the Texas Supreme Court (every member put on the court by Republican governors) getting over 100,000 votes already in Harris County thrown out four days before Election Day. This is not an insignificant number in a state where every poll for past four months has been within margin of error.

The Republicans are going to try EVERY dirty trick in the book, and, without an impartial judiciary to stand in the way, they’re going to get away with it.

Unless Donny should decide that he’s fed up with the whole thing and resigning on the promise of a pardon from Mike, then either they have to deal with “scorched earth” Trump or “screw this, I’m on vacation” Trump. In an ideal world, they’d cut their losses, excommunicate his bloated ass from the party, and take their chances in the midterms. But in this world, they’re going to have to at least try to look like they give a shit that 11+ million people are jobless, millions weeks or less away from bankruptcy/foreclosure/eviction in the middle of the holiday season, and a pandemic continuing to rage out of control despite their best efforts to downplay it.

Isn’t that what I said?

um.. yeah.

I guess I was just musing on how I wished winning a major lottery could be played in the hopes of winning being readily represented by a percentage expressed in easily intuited numbers.

For both Powerball and MegaMillions, even the second prize is less than one in ten million odds.

But the really frustrating thing is that these lotteries only pay out like $10 or $12 if one hits one of the one-in-700 odd prizes. I’ve done these many times, and always find it starkly negative in emotional feedback for buying anymore lottery tickets. I think this is one reason sales of MM and PB have fallen so far behind the scratch-off sales.

But in elections, the “odds” really don’t reflect probabilities in the sense of combinatorics. Instead, say Trump has a “10%” chance of winning, all this means is that someone has an algorithm that wants to express that they think Trump really won’t win but the odds-maker doesn’t want to totally commit to that.

Everything is frequencies/combinatorics. It’s just factoring in the unknown, as polls come with significant margins of error and thus leave the door open for Trump-win scenarios, with the percentage revealing how many combinations of such MoEs lead to a Trump victory. So, a lotto in the end.

And unlike 2016, he also has the full powers of the Executive at his disposal and a SCOTUS ready to back him up.

Nixon wasn’t charged (yet) when he was pardoned. Per the Fount of Knowledge:

The pardon of Richard Nixon (formally known as Proclamation 4311) was a presidential proclamation issued by President of the United States Gerald Ford on September 8, 1974. By it, Ford granted to Richard Nixon, his predecessor, a full and unconditional pardon for any crimes that he might have committed against the United States as president.[1][2]

If Roe vs Wade goes down the rallying point the GOP has used to get the conservative Catholics and other conservative religious groups is suddenly gone. There will be some effect in trying to keep it “gone”, but it won’t be the same. And without that set of blinders on the Catholics get to look at the rest of the GOP mantra and decide whether the racism, class warfare, and worship of Mammon is what they really stand for. Well, I expect Trump himself to not necessarily live that long, or at least in any stage of competency. Some raids and financial investigations are, however, probably going to nail the rest of the family and a bunch of cronies to the wall.

And at some point I expect that whatever the Russians found from hacking the RNC computers will see the light of day as well. Though given the scandal tolerance the GOP already has I don’t expect that will do much more than add a little more tarnish to the tattered legacies of McConnel, Graham, etc.

Trump’s ‘curative cocktail’ appears to be having some issues: Regeneron Halts Enrollment of Critically Ill Patients in COVID-19 Antibody Trial

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has decided to halt enrollment of very sick patients with COVID-19 in its trial studying antibody cocktail REGN-COV2, a treatment previously touted as a “cure” by President Donald Trump after he received the experimental therapy for his COVID-19 infection in October.

The decision to halt critically ill patients was made in response to Regeneron’s independent safety board finding a potential safety signal and an unfavorable risk-benefit profile of the monoclonal antibody therapy in a subgroup of patients requiring high-flow oxygen or mechanical ventilation. These patients are generally sicker and hospitalized because they are in the advanced stages of the disease.

The Tarrytown, N.Y.-based pharmaceutical company says it is blinded to the trial data. As such, the company did not provide specific details in their Friday morning statement on what the safety signal was or in which group experienced the unexpected event. The hold on enrollment will stay in place until the independent data monitoring committee can collect and evaluate further data on severely ill patients currently enrolled in Regeneron’s trial.

Last night we were discussing the mercenary fiasco in Venezuela. This is how real pros do it:
American hostage Philip Walton rescued in dramatic military operation: Officials

An American citizen abducted last week in Niger has been rescued during a high-risk U.S. military raid in neighboring Nigeria, officials told ABC News early Saturday.

The mission was undertaken by elite commandos as part of a major effort to free the U.S. citizen, Philip Walton, 27, before his abductors could get far after taking him captive in Niger on Oct. 26, counterterrorism officials told ABC News.

The operation involved the governments of the U.S., Niger and Nigeria working together to rescue Walton quickly, sources said. The elite SEAL Team Six carried out the rescue mission and killed all but one of the seven captors, according to officials with direct knowledge about the operation.

“They were all dead before they knew what happened,” another counterterrorism source with knowledge told ABC News.

The Pentagon lauded the rescue mission in a statement.

“U.S. forces conducted a hostage rescue operation during the early hours of 31 October in Northern Nigeria to recover an American citizen held hostage by a group of armed men,” said Pentagon chief spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman. “This American citizen is safe and is now in the care of the U.S. Department of State. No U.S military personnel were injured during the operation.

re: #77 Vote Cthulhu - No longer the greater evil!

Yes, but that’s baked into the calculations.

This is important, especially if you live in Texas. From Living Blue in Texas:
Pay Attention To The Far-Right And Their Plans Post-Election

Be aware, be ready, and hope for the best.
Back in August, we published a story about how hate groups and white supremacists were gearing up for a civil war. Through the chatters of Facebook and far-right-wing blogs, we learned how these groups have been saying that the day of reckoning will be November 4, the day after the election…regardless of who wins.

Now that the election is only 6 days away, it’s important to pay attention and be aware of what’s happening in our country, state, and towns.

I found myself on the Q side of the internet a few days ago.
While not intentional, I wound up there, anyway. These people are legitimately planning to fight imaginary enemies and we all should be aware of this.

A few months ago, after the Kyle Rittenhouse incident, Facebook began cracking down on far-right groups that promote Q-conspiracies and white militias.

The far-right has reverted back to forums.
They’re also using MeWe, Parlor, and various other off-brand social sites.

There are multiple forum sites. I’m not going to link them because fuck them. But I was made aware of several forum posts going around which were talking about preparation for the election.

The Texas Militia, specifically, is doing a mass training exercise in Colmesneil, TX this coming weekend. Colmesneil is in Tyler County, way out in the middle of nowhere.

They stated that the purpose of this exercise was to prepare for “the leftist domestic terrorists will be ramping up their widespread rioting, looting, and arson after the November 3rd elections.”

The cited source of their claims. Infowars.

Nominally, these goobers are preparing to defend their homes, businesses, and white women from the mass rioting and looting that will inevitably result from the likewise inevitable Trump victory. This is dogma to them. They will go into shock and go absolutely apeshit when Trump loses, and may finally move beyond posturing and boasting to real violence. In particular, any gathering of black people or identifiable “liberals,” and any facility associated even loosely with the Democratic Party could become a target. I am hoping that advance word of this is the reason Abbott has alerted the National Guard. I am not optimistic though that he will do anything to oppose the terrorist insurgents. What local police will do is pretty much up to them, and will vary from place to place. Some will remember how the terror gangs threatened law enforcement during the lockdown, and will look for payback. Others will support their fellow right wingers.

Connery was the suave Bond; Craig was the gritty one.

I have never watched a Craig-as-Bond movie and probably never will, at least of my own volition and choice.

Serious question, if one were to encounter an armed maga gathering, could one vocally goad them by telling them to shoot you, legally?

I really admire the Craig films - they’re actual drama rather than light spy-fiction comedy. That said, I strongly enjoy spy-fiction comedy. Brosnan lands somewhere in the middle - not comedic, but not really interesting drama either and just kinda flat. I like him in other things, but not as Bond.

Craig was the one truest to Fleming’s portrayal in the books. Violent and dark. Craig’s “Casino Royale” is the best Bond movie ever, in my opinion.

And, maintenance is here, once again, to snake out the sewage service line outside.
Third time this week.
Unfortunately the wide gauge snake is out of commission, so they’re using like a 1/4 inch snake. Basically poking holes in the blockage and calling it a day.
They bought the large gauge snake essentially for my sewage problem. They were calling in a plumber, with a large industrial snake, about once every month, month and a half to clear the line.

If someone I am hanging out with really wants to watch a Craig-as-Bond film I probably would not boycott the choice but would never think of it on my own. I have seen him in other roles that I admire (Reisistance comes to mind) but to me he is Not Bond.

Either there is a design problem or you need to evaluate what is going down your drains. Maybe eat less fiber

re: #219 Ace Rothstein

Craig was the one truest to Fleming’s portrayal in the books. Violent and dark.

Fleming filled in the backstory about James Bond in later books after the first Bond film, “Doctor No” was made, making him a half-Scottish half-Swiss brutal thug with a veneer of sophistication. This was a direct response to Connery’s portrayal of Bond.

There were other “secret agent” TV shows like “The Saint” and “Man in a Suitcase” around in the 1960s, some of them glamorous and some of them gritty but Connery was able to bring to Bond both elements of the role unlike most of his successors. Fortunately for him he was never called on to make a Bond movie anything like “The Prisoner” which dialled the secret agent schtick up to eleven.

Never sent a camera down. The consensus among the collection of plumbers brought in has been root growth combined with flushable wipes and tampons
