From This Place:

From this place I cannot see
Heart is dark,
beneath rising seas

From this place, I don’t believe
All my hopes,
my sweet relief

From here, I say I cannot breathe (I can’t breathe)
Fear and hurt
again we bleed

Unsafe, unsound, unclear to me
don’t know how to be

From this place, I must proceed
Trust in love,
truth be my lead
From here I will stand with thee
Until hearts are truly free

re: #241 Nojay UK

Fleming filled in the backstory about James Bond in later books after the first Bond film, “Doctor No” was made, making him a half-Scottish half-Swiss brutal thug with a veneer of sophistication. This was a direct response to Connery’s portrayal of Bond.

There were other “secret agent” TV shows like “The Saint” and “Man in a Suitcase” around in the 1960s, some of them glamorous and some of them gritty but Connery was able to bring to Bond both elements of the role unlike most of his successors. Fortunately for him he was never called on to make a Bond movie anything like “The Prisoner” which dialled the secret agent schtick up to eleven.

What’s wrong with The Prisoner? If anything I’d say it’s less a secret agent story and more of a prison story like the Great Escape or a Stalag 17 but with a psychedelic 60’s flair to it all.

I have come to prefer Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Bond in recent years because of the quality of the movies was greater (his version of Casino Royale, Skyfall) and I liked his take on the suave half sophisticated half barbarian agent. And that was Connery’s greatest invention - and it’s a good thing we liked it because unlike Craig, Connery was the kind of actor who played one character in different costumes.

This year, Biden is up 9-10% with 2% undecided and more historical levels of third party voting (2-3%)

The Republican-stacked federal judiciary is going to be the hardest part of it.

If the Dems get the trifecta, they can simply add seats to the lower courts along with the Supreme Court as part of a broad based court reform package.

Some of the things they could do:
- split district courts between criminal and civil
- reorganize the circuits (possibly adding new circuits)
- add seats to the Supreme Court
- federal anti-slapp law

Background from the 28th on the protest in Graham North Carolina.

Black Lives Matter Gets Out the Vote and Brings Politics Home

A rural North Carolina county is working to turn anger over police brutality into lasting change.
On a sunny October afternoon, one day before the start of early voting, a small crowd of people gathered on the courthouse steps in the small city of Graham, North Carolina. Hoisting Black Lives Matter banners and green, red, and black flags, wearing face masks, they faced the 30-foot-tall Confederate statue they have repeatedly asked the county’s board of commissioners to remove.

Men in pickup trucks flying Thin Blue Line flags occasionally drove past, honking and shouting, but most in the crowd kept their eyes fixed on the Rev. Gregory Drumwright, the pastor of a large, youth-focused church and campus ministry in nearby Greensboro.

Shouldn’t we start referring to MAGAt harrassment convoy pickups as “technicals?”

I’ve stopped using Facebook, my use of Instagram and tiktok are very much not political. And as I’ve mentioned, my use of twitter is mostly scrolling and calling Cruz and Rubio pendejos when someone on my feed retweets them.

In real life, I’ve basically stopped trying to have conversations about politics with most Republicans I know (including most of my family), because there’s just no convincing them. I basically just roll my eyes and try to change the subject. It’s a byproduct of our polarized politics right now, I think, everyone is talking past each other. Hopefully it gets better I’m the coming years, but I’ve found that the arguments for the sake of arguing are just not worth the psychic strain

HOUSTON - Republicans are apologizing to Democrats after Trump supporters brought a casket to the Biden Bus Tour in Missouri City Thursday. The casket included a dark-haired mannequin that some believe was meant to depict Kamala Harris.

A mail-in ballot was also inside the casket next to the mannequin which was connected to a hears with writing on the side that read, “Collecting Democrat votes one dead stiff at a time,” and “Vote like your life depends on it. It does.”

Increase the number of circuits to 13, one Supreme Court justice for each circuit.

So, we finally got to vote today. About an hour and 20 minutes on line and we got through the door.

The Trump truck dickheads were out in force, driving up and down the street honking their horns. One particularly stupid one committed a little electioneering, pulling his pickup (with 10 Trump flags on it) right up in front of the polling place. A town safety officer was there to tell him to keep it moving and get out of the parking lot.

I’m noticing that the whole Trump truck phenomenon is actually some kind of dick-measuring contest, where guys try to load up their trucks with as many flags as they can crowd on there.

Wonder what they’re gonna do with the flags after Tuesday…

HypnoToad  Oct 31, 2020 • 1:21:37pm

I’m now rethinking my early mail-in ballot due to trump’s October surprise in my corner of Southern California. Driving home for lunch, I just passed an actual trump parade going the other way on foothill boulevard; some twenty pickups and cars, horns continuously blaring, festooned with large waving trump banners and stickers. They weren’t blocking traffic, mostly keeping with the flow. Typing this ten minutes later, I can still hear them in the distance as they sound like they are circling around town.

Around here, in a somewhat conservative neighborhood, there actually aren’t very many political signs. Two in your face trump signs and one house nearly buried in multiple large banners, balanced by a couple dozen more modest Biden Harris yard signs seen on my three mile morning walk route.

Should I have waited? //

The term I’ve used before to describe us as a Hybrid State at present. We appear to use democratic wallpaper to cover over an actual working authoritarian regime led by an Executive Order madman supported by an utterly corrupt and evil Republican Senate.

We became more or less a formal Hybrid State when Trump was ushered into the White House by a anti-democratic institution called the Electoral College against the wishes of a 3 popular million majority. Until then we had been teetering on the brink of falling from a Flawed Democracy status into the abyss we are in now. It is going to take an all-out show of force by a solid popular Biden majority to turn things around post-election. Things will not change until Republican Congressmen can have actual blood on their hands and be legally and electorally accountable for it. This is what it is going to take.

Take the ball down the field, no forward passing.

If the ball goes on the ground, there a kind of semi-structured shoving match in which men on both sides lock heads and try and kick the ball behind them or push the other side back, either way gaining possession when their fellow players can pick up and run the ball.

Commercial tenant improvement construction in Southern California (with a few exceptions) is 5 am to 2 pm year round. Mostly because of noise complaints

Among the exceptions is Santa Monica which doesn’t let construction start until like 9 am because housing and commercial properties aren’t distinctly zoned into different areas of the city

“Construction work” in AZ generally entails knocking up a brand-spanking new subdivision where nobody has even moved in yet. Noise is usually not an issue.

As y’all may know, I live in San Diego county. At least in my neighborhood, nary a political sign. Walking around I have seen a couple of signs for people running for local office.

But no signs for any federal office.

Is there an “enthusiasm” problem? Maybe, but I can’t tell. Sure, there have been a lot of mail ballots collected already.

I’m finding this election hard to gauge on the ground.

I really don’t know what is going to happen on Tuesday.

Odd times in which I have found myself living.

Thought: the “gamer” generation has already changed the fields of entertainment, probably also of news. I’m wondering if the lack of old-style campaign signs is yet another indication that there truly is a turnover in cultre?

Residential work here usually still starts at like 8 or 9, especially if there are people living nearby. But there’s not a lot of new subdivision construction in these parts. Usually more multi family construction (overwhelmingly apartments instead of condos)

I think it’s a change in how campaigns are. People know who Biden is and they’ve gotten to know Harris too. The yardsign game I think works best in the most local of races when the candidate running might be the local principal or maybe he owns a store or restaruant. I do see Biden signs when I walk the dog but I’ve never felt a need for one myself. I’m doing what I can with the people I know best.

Yes, mail ballots are easier.

But herein we have the same old problem - being part of a society compared to being an individual in a mathematical set.

Getting back to the gamer-generation - isolation is an increasing problem.

Social gatherings bond us to one another.

If we no longer gather in medium to large groups, but only sit in our rooms look at tiny screens, we are becoming different than what our human ancestors were.

Social unifying actions, like going to a voting booth, reinforce our group beliefs.

Now, you may remark in your best marxist tone, those group identities are what cause wars, enforced racism, etc.

Ok, yes, our need to be part of tribe has its downsides.

But that doesn’t mean we can live without the tribe. We really are social animals. We need each other. We have to belong. As humans it is part of being to belong to a group. It’s what we are.

Lots of signs here, especially in the foothills neighborhood we drive around in to look for wildlife. (Fairly fancy neighborhood, but not the fanciest in the ABQ) Too many tRump signs for my liking, but plenty of Biden signs up there too.

We live in a conservative neighborhood, so signs are mostly for tRump and other Rs.

tRump had been gaining some ground here in the last couple of weeks, but he seems to have dropped down again. For the most part, Biden has maintained at least a 9 pt. lead for weeks, and right now he’s up to 11.

Trying to read up on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and I’ll be honest… I think it’s the wrong approach. The constitution actually gives Congress the power to regulate the “time place and manner” of elections and I think the better approach would be to establish national standards regarding early voting, mail in voting, and the number of polling places on a per capita basis, as well as addressing ID laws and the rest. It’s a lot further than we’ve gone in the past, but it would potentially address all the bullshit that republicans have tried to do the last few cycles

For some reason in my head rugby players are interlinked with the goons in Mad Max films.

I mean voting needs to be more secure than say signing into your email account but if you have to wait hours to vote, there’s something very wrong.

Why can’t it be that easy, though? We use over-the-Internet systems for things like banking and health care, which demand the highest levels of security. Surely, if given the opportunity to do it right (read: NOT farm it out to the lowest bidder), we could build an online voting system that would be secure but easy to use.

I think we need to improve our cybersecurity systems first tbh but you make legitimate points.

Agreed on that front. America is way behind when it comes to cyber security.

re: #183 The Ghost of a Flea

For some reason in my head rugby players are interlinked with the goons in Mad Max films.

The “return severed body parts after the match is over” rule was brought in after an international match was stopped for a time due to having to find someone’s eye. It was during the infamous “99” Barbarian tour back in the 70s in Serf Efrica, when official international sporting events weren’t being held there due to apartheid.

The Springboks were a hard team, not averse to booting someone in the nuts or punching faces in the scrums and as the home team, all the match officials were Serf Efrican and they tended to look the other way when this happened. The Barbs agreed that if one of their team was getting roughed up by a Springbok the captain would shout “99!” and every Barb player within reach would pile on the offender and kick the living shit out of them. Funny thing, after a few “99” shouts the Springboks players stopped being quite so rough.

Anyway, during one of the matches a Springbok lock forward got hit so hard his eye came out of its socket and landed in the grass and mud. I should mention, perhaps that the eye was artificial. Everyone searched for it until it was found and returned to the lock who wiped it perfunctorily on his shirt, spat on it and wedged it back into his eye socket with bits of grass sticking out around the edges. Nowadays of course with the rule changes he’d have to wait until the match was over to get his eye back.

Dang! I am continually amazed the vast expertise of the lizards!

Where else could I read about missing glass eyes during South African Rugby in the 1970s.

The ‘99 call’ even made it into wiki.

In rugby union, the “99” call was a policy of simultaneous retaliation by the Lions during their 1974 tour to South Africa.[1] The tour was marred by on-pitch violence, which the match officials did little to control and the relative absence of cameras compared to the modern game made citing and punishment after the fact unlikely.[2][a]

Lions’ captain Willie John McBride therefore instigated a policy of “one in, all in” - that is, when one Lion retaliated, all other Lions were expected to join in the melee or hit the nearest Springbok.[3] By doing so, the referee would be unable to identify any single instigator and so would be left with the choice of sending off all or none of the team. In this respect, the “99” call was extremely successful, as no Lions player was sent off during the tour.

And the glass eye episode:

The battles created one of rugby’s immortal tales: [Gordon] Brown hit his opposite number, Johan de Bruyn, so hard that the Orange Free State man’s glass eye flew out and landed in the mud. “so there we are, 30 players plus the ref, on our hands and knees scrabbling about in the mire looking for this glass eye,” recalled Brown in an interview before his death from non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2001, aged 53. “Eventually, someone yells ‘Eureka’ whereupon de Bruyn grabs it and plonks it straight back in the gaping hole in his face.”

he did some understated films from time to time, granted he was a lot like John Wayne in a lot of films, so I really enjoyed his character against type in the Indiana Jones tilt….

he could do drama, if you check out his work in films like The Hill, The Anderson Tapes, Outland, The Name of the Rose all illustrate that the dude could act, but you know, once yo do the James Bond thing, it’s not always easy to find other roles that suit, all though I thought he did exceptionally well in roles The Hunt for Red October, The Man Who Would Be King, The Wind and The Lion and even Time Bandits.

Everything that happened in Graham, NC today was unfathomable, but this particular video has nearly broken me. The big, bad cops have two people on the ground; they then pull one of them across the pavement by the ankles before standing him up, and it’s a little boy, for fuck’s sake. I just want to cry.

What in the hell is wrong with the millions who are voting for Trump? That’s the more salient question. Trump has done everything he can do to disqualify himself from office. But yet he’ll still get 45+ % of the vote and make this a tight election.
