Kurt Vile: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 6, 2019 | Bob Boilen — Kurt Vile exudes a casualness at the Tiny Desk in his style and body language that is so unlike most anxious artists who come to play behind my desk. Sure, he’s done this Tiny Desk thing before, with Courtney Barnett. But even then, I remember thinking that he’s got something else on his mind — and it made me laugh this time around when Kurt played his opening tune, “Bassackwards,” and sang these words: “I was on the beach but I was thinking about the bay / Got to the bay but by then I was far away.”

That idea of being one place and thinking about another, for me, also connects to the way he plays guitar. He seems distracted, yet the complex guitar lines he so nonchalantly plays, along with his musical mate Rob Laakso, are effortlessly beautiful and lyrical.

After they played two new tunes from Kurt Vile’s latest record, Bottle It In, Kurt goes solo on an older, self-described “juvenile” song from long ago, recently revived during his Courtney Barnett collaboration last year. “Peeping Tomboy” has its own schizophrenic issues as Kurt sings, “I don’t wanna change but I don’t wanna stay the same / I don’t wanna go but I’m runnin’ / I don’t wanna work but I don’t wanna sit around / All day frownin’.”

On the surface, it all can seem just chill. But there’s a lot of rumination in these songs — and even when he’s gazing into the overhead office lights, I think he got his mind on the stars and the world at large.

Set List
“Bassackwards”
“Loading Zones”
“Peeping Tomboy”

Musicians
Kurt Vile - vocals, guitar
Rob Laakso - guitar

So, I finished the new Carl Hiaasen novel Squeeze Me and it’s excellent! Carl has written about Donald Trump in his previous novels but due to a convention in American publishing, the name of a current U.S. President can’t be used as a character in a novel. So Hiaasen gives FFVCS a fake name based on a made-up “Secret Service” code name.

There’s no safety net in this country. People can’t afford to sit at home for days on end.

OT: One of our group pointed us to an intriguing story about ferrets and a treatment that prevents covid. Doctors developed an inexpensive nasal spray that requires no refrigeration that protects ferrets from covid if administered daily. If somehow this translates to humans, it could be a temporary measure that provides protection until a vaccine is widely available.

All I know is that it was 8 months ago today, March 14, that I last went anywhere other than the grocery store, the bank, the post office or the dentist (don’t ask.) I think there is a sizable chunk of America that just doesn’t give a fuck about anyone or anything other than their own creature comforts—no matter what the risk—to themselves or anyone around them. God fucking forbid they don’t get to go to the gym, or the hairdresser, or a bar, or that they have to be so inconvenienced as to have to wear a mask (and to actually cover their noses and mouths with it, not hang it from their chins) to be in the grocery store for 20 minute. SUCH AN INCONVENIENCE AND A BLOW AGAINST LIBERTY!!

I’m sick of these fuckers and their constant whining and bullshit. As the cases and deaths soar, they become even louder and more obnoxious and I just want to puke.

(video, 4:39, showing the damage inside Rocky Mountain National Park. The East Troublesome Fire is still burning, now over 193,000 acres and 60% contained.)

On Wednesday, October 21, the East Troublesome Fire ran approximately 18 miles before it moved into the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. It then spotted approximately 1.5 miles from the head of Tonahutu Creek on the west side of the Continental Divide to the head of Spruce Creek on the east side of the Continental Divide. Rapid evacuations took place in Grand Lake on October 21. Evacuations for the majority of the Estes Valley were implemented on October 22, as weather predictions forecast major winds on the night of October 23 through October 24 pushing the fire further to the east. Firefighting actions and favorable weather on October 24 and 25 helped halt the major movement of the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak Fires.

The following video demonstrates first-hand the impacts of the East Troublesome Fire. It is a somber reflection and an important part of our understanding.

Approximately 30,000 acres, or 9 percent of the park, has been impacted by the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak Fires.

Our park staff are working to create a path forward for those areas that were most impacted.

We have felt the support and concern of so many who have a deep sense of place and attachment to their beloved Rocky Mountain National Park. Thank you! ❤

There are some who object to our characterizing Trump supporters as racists and Nazis. But if we want to persuade them to abandon their evil ways, we may have to use tools of soft persuasion to have them see the truth, instead of perhaps hardening their loyalty to Trump by calling them out.
