White editors—lacking self reflection on why they view conservative whites in rural areas as having inherent authenticity such that they need to be understood and examined as characters, but somehow are not curious about what motivates any other voting bloc—are a renewable resource.
Other people can be understood in terms their demographic mash bill…but white people are individuals who cannot be understood by means as pedestrian as “…this is the thing they consistently vote for, therefore we can make an inference” because that inference would be rude and depersonalizing.

I live in a rural area, and what gets my neck up is that I constantly deal with people who lie about what they want, or conceal it so deeply in coded language that they themselves are no longer aware of the relationship between what they say and what they actually want. The culture of “conservatism” I live inside is intensely aware that much of what it really, really wants is unacceptable…not illiberal, not “unpopular with the center,” but deeply, deeply selfish and frequently authoritarian as well as containing lashings of a basically feudal mindset in which many people do not own their own bodies…and there are decades and decades of accumulated code words and elaborate semantic bypasses around saying the thing itself.
It’s both infuriating and depressing, because there are a lot of folks who operate at a Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” understanding of why they believe what they believe: they don’t know the mechanism, they don’t know the origin, they just know that it will be worse if the rituals aren’t done. The words they say don’t mean anything.
But in and among them are the people…mostly the rich and old blood rural elite…who kind of remember the point is maintaining an oligarchy, and if anything they’re even louder and more vehement that things cannot possibly change or ever be better or more just. Therefore none of the traditional institutions, or the traditions themselves, can be questioned in their efficacy or morality, and the real problem is people that ask those questions.
It’s always the same formula/script:
1. Start article with fact that everybody with the common sense Zod gave to the common earthworm knows to be true.
2. Declare that wingnuts “dispute this” or some words to the effect, but phrase it as though this is some “rural knowledge” rather than a total break from reality.
3. Set the stage for the remainder of the article in one or more one-stoplight, population numbering in three digits, avg. IQ lower than room temp “authentic rural town” location(s).
4. Proceed to print whatever brain droppings you hear from a selection of “genuine salt-of-the-earth” folks you happen to encounter who sound as though they still think indoor plumbing is a new-fangled invention.
5. Any commentary between the quotes is to be slanted as treating anyone who questions the “wisdom” of these backwoods hicks as “out-of-touch” or “elitist” who an’t understand what these folks do.
6. Sign off by arguing that even if they are a bunch of brain dead rednecks, you’re never going to change their minds so might as well find a way to live with them instead.
Man, I can’t believe the LA Times took the bold and untouched initiative to tap into the under-covered voice of the ignored Trump voter, they who have so little voice and we hear so little from!!
…seriously, like, how can they keep pretending that this is somehow unbroken ground after running these Cletus safaris almost literally weekly?

Trust me, my mother comes from a small rural town in SE KY and I know that small town mentality all too well. It’s mutated some as the slow march of progress has come barreling in with the extension of the highway and all the businesses that have grown up around it. And I see all the sorts of things you mention in my relatives, which is probably part of the reason I haven’t been back to visit in-person in years. It’s not ignorance born of lack of education or being cut off from the rest of the world, it’s a willful ignorance that says “My whole world is encompassed in a few hundred square miles, why can’t the things that work here work everywhere else?”

To some extent it works the other way as well.
Why aren’t people more informed about the world outside rural areas, when there’s so many media choices and an Internet full of information? (Despite no media choices and Internet which is unavailable or frighteningly expensive.)
The one relatively neutral newspaper in my state was the Omaha World-Herald back when Warren Buffett owned it. He wanted to play with a full-size model railroad though (BNSF), so he sold the paper to a wingnut.
Kind of pointless to wait for a deep-pocketed person to come into a rural area and set up something to counter the narrative of Sinclair, FOX radio, Christian hate radio, &c. They aren’t going to do it, so rural areas remain soaked in conservative hatred.

This isn’t a gentle thing to say, but:
Okay, I’m arguing with myself and just going to straight up acknowledge it at the get go: I am not addressing other people, I am reflecting on the thing I just said.
I think one of the most horrible things I see regularly in the rural USA is the number of people who have just accepted that they have to suffer and be in pain because life cannot be better, and are terrified to accept help or believe in any kind of collective lifting-up of people because they view it as antithetical to being a good and whole person.
It’s not stupidity, it’s enculturated deliberately in them by powerful institutions and people, and has been for so long that it’s now self-propagating.
And…I say this as an anthropologist-adjacent thinker…it propagates because it allows them to survive. Which is almost Lovecraftian horrible but absolutely necessary to appreciate. Place and community are such powerful, positive things that create a sense of identity that leaving seems like a loss of self…but at the same time, there are people making existing in place harder and harder on purpose. We generally say “people can learn to survive anything” in a heroic way, a testament to endurance, but the flip side is that people can be forced to survive anything and accommodate terrible suffering, and are plastic enough to bend their minds around it. That’s how domestic abuse works, that’s how cults work that’s how dictatorship works: most people just want to be normal and feel okay, and are willing to do the internal work of walling off thoughts and feelings that suggest things are not okay.
There was a day when there was a rural, radical leftism that staged strikes and fought Pinkertons, and I don’t 100% understand where that went, but I think what we see in rural areas is part of the same malady we see in suburbs and dying factory cities except worse. White American culture recalibrated its expectations after WW2, leaned heavy into a hyperindividualist understanding of achievement and effort, and continued on under the assumption that nothing would rake back what had improved.
And then White American culture was convinced to demolish the infrastructure and aid systems that had lifted them up, so that black Americans wouldn’t get a fair share…and that led into “market based” neoliberal policy that let companies just eat towns and a tiny number of chains become monopolies. And at the same time, the rest of the world recovered from WW2, worldwide logistics changed, and labor markets became truly international…all of which took the legs out from under rural industry and markets.
As much as I can get pissed at individual bad actors, the vast majority of these people are subject to systems that have maimed them from birth. It’s like their grandparents broke their legs and then set them crooked, on purpose.
The reality is that we have to talk about them as obstacles to change, but at the same time…it is necessary to resist that individualistic conceit that they have not been acted upon, that there is some kind of absolute “choice” they made.
It’s fucking tragic. My town is tragic, the poor people in my town are tragic even when they frighten or anger me, because….they’ve been put where they are. And by virtue of being both a cultural outsider and member of the elite, I get to see the stay-behind cultural system that keeps them feeling trapped and uncertain and uninformed and thus looking for easy answers.
It sucks, because it would be so much easier if you couldn’t see the machinery that pins them in place.

Trust me, I know it all too well. I see it in my uncle who has been left crippled by a lifetime of working various short-term jobs because the closure of the Fruit of the Loom plant back in the 90s meant steady work was hard to come by. Or my other uncle who’s dealing with breathing issues from years working at the Kingsford plant. The uncle who’s working as a tree-trimmer despite grappling with MS because he has nowhere near enough savings to keep him going til retirement. Another uncle who is lucky to be alive after suffering a series of mini-coronaries and one “widowmaker” that required experimental surgery to survive, all because he was working himself to death.
About the only unions you can speak of in polite company without getting dirty looks are the “good” ones: Cops, firefighters, and coal-miners. You might be able to mention teachers, but odds are you’ll get dark muttering about how all teachers are “overpaid” and “impossible to fire.” But you mention any other unions, particularly those involved in factory work, and they’ll reflexively cross themselves and spit. It’s taken as a gospel truth that unions “killed” factories in America and that’s why you can’t find “good jobs” anymore. And Zod help you if you try to argue with them about how it wasn’t the unions at fault, but the assholes that ran the factories who left town just as soon as their little fiefdoms dried up. The plantations may have long since gone away, but the mentality lives strong to this day in the rural communities of America.

COVID-19 surge strains Wyoming contact tracers’ abilities (News Channel Nebraska Panhandle)
JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Hope flickered out at 9 p.m. on a recent Friday.
That’s when contact tracers had to stop making calls due to the late hour. The Teton County team still had 20 people, all positive for COVID-19, who it needed to reach to issue isolation orders and conduct case investigations.
“We were very hopeful up until about 9 on Friday,” Teton County Director of Health Jodie Pond said the following Monday.
The reality of the overwhelming number of new cases sunk in Saturday, when instead of doing full investigations, staff started making truncated phone calls to, at a minimum, find out if COVID-positive people have contact with or work with vulnerable individuals in settings like health care or a nursing home.
“We are triaging,” Pond said.
Active infections in the area have spiked to record highs, the Jackson Hole News & Guide reported.

South Dakota reported 1,482 confirmed new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the third-largest single day total behind Thursday and October 30th.
There were also 1,750 recoveries and one death, dropping the number of active cases by 95 to 18,627. There have been 58,920 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota along with 556 deaths.
The state has reported the nation’s second-worst number of new cases per capita over the last two weeks, according to Johns Hopkins researchers. Roughly one out of every 50 people has tested positive in the last two weeks.
The number of hospitalizations inched up Friday to 556 people, another new record. Health officials say COVID-19 patients occupy roughly 20% of the state’s hospital beds and 33% of the state’s ICU beds. About 33% of both are still available. (more)

Anti-mask group holds protest in Omaha as Douglas County sees record number of COVID cases (Omaha World-Herald)
About thirty-five people showed up.
As the sun set on another record-breaking day for COVID-19 cases in Douglas County, a group of about 35 people gathered in a parking lot, maskless and determined to protest what many of them consider an “infringement of freedoms.”
Allie French of Omaha stood with the group in the Millard West High School parking lot just before 5 p.m. She held her baby daughter as her 3-year-old son played nearby.
French said the protest had originally been planned as a “small (maskless) group shopping trip” at the Hy-Vee near 180th and Q Streets. Shortly after the plan was made, two billboards that drew attention to Omaha’s anti-mask groups were erected in the Millard area.
One of the billboards, which was erected Monday, featured a crash-test dummy wearing a mask inscribed “comply.” Next to it, in large type, was: “It’s not about a virus! It’s about control!”
The billboard company took them down after public criticism.

Instead, they can run Cletus Safaris in cities such as Boston or Chicago. I’m sure there are plenty of unheard cletii in those places as well, who can give the media of the oppressed Trump supporter in a largely liberal area.
That, and they get different backdrops other than tractors, corn, cattle, or wheat. They could have Lake Michigan, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, &c.

Trust me, my mother comes from a small rural town in SE KY and I know that small town mentality all too well. It’s mutated some as the slow march of progress has come barreling in with the extension of the highway and all the businesses that have grown up around it. And I see all the sorts of things you mention in my relatives, which is probably part of the reason I haven’t been back to visit in-person in years. It’s not ignorance born of lack of education or being cut off from the rest of the world, it’s a willful ignorance that says “My whole world is encompassed in a few hundred square miles, why can’t the things that work here work everywhere else?”
And what “works” there? These are communities in deep poverty, dependent on disability checks and food stamps, with crumbling schools, high levels of drug addiction, and nostalgia for a coal industry which is gone forever.

Heck. Reading Homer Hickam’s memoirs* gives you a real good indication how much of that sort of thing was gone already 50 years ago. Same books give you a feel on how there is a sense of community in the coal (or industry of your choice) towns while at the same time there are a lot of underlying social and economic tensions and the cracks are also showing.

Conviction perhaps that a packed judiciary and a logjam in the legislative side is in their self-interest since it’s what they are told is keeping the liberals and federal government off their backs.
And as many have pointed out Covid-19 appears to be something that happens to other people, assuming they believe it’s a threat at all. Plus I expect that if it hits close there might well not be a realization about reality but instead further self-deception to justify the previous behaviors.

textile mills here. even non-unionized, my brother was making something like 14 bucks an hour in the early 80’s to run a loom at Milliken. That was hellaciously good money, considering minimum wage was something like a buck seventy-five. They paid really well because they wanted to ensure the unions didn’t get a foothold in the state. Now, the father of a friend, who had worked up to management-level there, died in his 40’s from brown lung because he’d come up when there were zero safety regulations, but that was a small price to pay for 14 bucks an hour.

I think they’re all operating on reflex now. Trump’s reflex is to deny and bullshit and bully and sue, which he’s doing. The gooper congresscritters’ reflex is to parrot what Trump says to keep the base from destroying them, which they’re doing. They aren’t trying to win the decade, they’re trying to win the morning.
Anecdotally, this refusing to concede is freaking out the “normie” GOP voters. It was really unpopular when the yam refused to guarantee a peaceful transfer of power, and it’s worse now. As far as Georgia is concerned, the Loeffler and Purdue can either admit that Biden won and spin themselves as a check on Biden (pissing off the Trump cult), or suture themselves to Trump’s ass and telling everyone the election was fixed (scaring off the normies and discouraging GOP voters from casting supposedly useless votes). In my precinct, in a traditionally hard GOP area, the turnout was 51 percent Trump, 48 percent Biden. That’s *historic*. But these asshats won’t even do a Cletus Safari among people who tick the boxes of being overwhelmingly white (with a significant minority Hispanic) and economically distressed (e.g. two thirds of the elementary and junior high kids are on free or reduced lunches). In Japan life is different. Most people there accept that citizenry both should benefit as well as carry responsibility. Now Japan is a place where working is a religion, for sure. But the government also accepts that the entire nation is responsible for the well being of the entire nation.
The government, in light of the pandemic wrecking havoc on the service industry, has been trying to get people to spend money and thus sweeten the pot. The “Go To” campaigns are aimed to do that.
Currently there is the Go To Eat campaign, to get people to go to restaurants (said restaurants have to have in place pandemic measures.)
To that end, the Japanese government will subsidize your dinner-out up to 1000 Yen (about $9) at participating restaurants.

Amend the Constitution to Prevent Another Trump
First, an amendment should work against conflicts of interest by making the disclosure of tax returns well before Election Day an eligibility requirement for federal offices. I really think the Trump campaign, from the Imbecile-in-Chief right on down, seriously screwed themselves in this election via their constant caterwauling over mail-in/absentee/remote/early voting. They (as usual) telegraphed their “challenge” strategy so often and so clearly, that I think it prodded many state authorities (who, after all, have the actual responsibility to conduct elections), to tighten up their balloting/counting procedures, and make sure that all the safeguards and re-checking systems were in place and ready to go by Election Day: knowing that the Trump/GOP people were going to start flinging shit the minute the polls closed. And that - even in “red states” - they weren’t going to have any of it.
Hence, I think, the GOP’s utter failure in trying to legally “challenge” the results: so far (AFAICT), nothing they have attempted has uncovered any more than the usual (miniscule) number of “bad” ballots present in any/every election in this country: and those as likely to be for Trump as for Biden - as might be expected. And it certainly hasn’t helped their case(s) that - as noted - the challenges have been extraordinarily-badly-presented: and often based on little more than “Trump’s tweets” and “Internet rumor”.

As much as I can get pissed at individual bad actors, the vast majority of these people are subject to systems that have maimed them from birth. It’s like their grandparents broke their legs and then set them crooked, on purpose.
The reality is that we have to talk about them as obstacles to change, but at the same time…it is necessary to resist that individualistic conceit that they have not been acted upon, that there is some kind of absolute “choice” they made.
It’s fucking tragic. My town is tragic, the poor people in my town are tragic even when they frighten or anger me, because….they’ve been put where they are. And by virtue of being both a cultural outsider and member of the elite, I get to see the stay-behind cultural system that keeps them feeling trapped and uncertain and uninformed and thus looking for easy answers.
It sucks, because it would be so much easier if you couldn’t see the machinery that pins them in place.
The Trump supporters I know are not the “left behind” in the rural communities. They aren’t broken. They are generally successful financially and most are very well educated. It may just reflect that certain people (most people?) are susceptible to brain washing. But it may also be that too many people are attracted to loud mouth bullies who demean and belittle those who are not white or healthy or Christian. Trump was able to pretend he was wealthy because he paid no price for failing to release his tax returns, which may have overturned the narrative of a successful real estate developer. We live in a society obsessed with celebrities — and Trump seized on that failing and turned it into the most watched and powerful reality show in history.

Shark chess is a chess variant where, in addition to standard moves, each piece gets an additional movement (queens can move like knights, bishops can move 1 square horizontally/vertically, rooks can move 1 square diagonally, I forget what additional move the knight has)) - the object of shark chess is that pieces get gobbled up quick due to the enhanced moves.
In the picture in the tweet, the queen would need to move like a knight to capture the barrister/judge, etc.
