In his first television interview since the election of Joe Biden as the 46th President, former President Barack Obama sits down with “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King to discuss the first volume of his memoirs, “A Promised Land.” He talks about the enormous opposition he experienced as he entered the White House; the impact of his political career on his family; and why he campaigned for his former vice president – and spoke out so vociferously against his successor, President Donald Trump.

GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAIL

Yep, this guy is real and a bit of a nuisance.
Achatina fulica

Achatina fulica is a species of large land snail that belongs in the family Achatinidae. It is also known as the Giant African land snail. It shares the common name “giant African snail” with other species of snails such as Achatina achatina and Archachatina marginata.

This snail species has been considered a significant cause in pest issues around the world. Internationally, it is the most frequently occurring invasive species of snail.

Here’s a conspiracy everyone is fucking ignoring:

Trump and the GOP are actively making the pandemic worse in the US. They are ignoring the health experts who say to mask and social distance to prevent further spread and to reduce the R0 rate below 1 so that the pandemic burns itself out.

They are actively seeking to wreck hospitals and medical care all across the nation. The GOP are the ones who are refusing to mask and social distance, and now the hospitals all around the nation are seeing cases soaring, are putting together temporary beds for overflow, canceling elective procedures (which are a huge generator of revenue for hospitals and doctors) and there’s a scarcity of health professionals because there’s demand everywhere for doctors and nurses who can deal with the surge in patients.

Cities all around the nations are facing the worst case scenarios right now: having to turn away patients, having to ration care, know that ICU beds are all full, which affects not only covid patients but anyone else who might be unlucky enough to get in a car accident, have a heart attack or stroke or other serious ailment requiring major medical interventions.

Even urgent care facilities are overwhelmed as patients seek out care.

This is the conspiracy of dumbassery that Trump and his know nothing GOP have wrought. All of this is on them.

All of this was avoidable had we had a nationwide masking/social distance plan in place and coordinated resources so that we could have contained the disease.

I’m afraid you’re right. After all the lockdowns and altering of behavior, nothing has changed for the better(because of selfish assholes, but we know this)and now people want to have one normal thing, a holiday dinner with friends and family. And because of that, there will be gatherings between now and the end of the year that will make covid a gift that keeps on giving into 2021. And maybe 2022.

I get it. I am fighting mental health issues and so are my guys. Even though they are way less isolated than I am, nothing about this is normal. And it’s having an effect. But I also would like to live and see a few more holidays. So we will be here, with possibly two guests for Christmas and that’s iffy. Probably not happening and I’m fine with it. No thanksgiving except our tiny family unit. And we’ll do our best to be grateful we’re still here, with basic needs met knowing that we’re better off than many. And knowing we have better leadership coming helps, even though the fight has barely begun. I’m tired ya’all.

Dominion Software is not going away, the GOP is turning this story about DNC warnings about Dominion Software vote switching to their favor as they try to establish that their software managed to steal five million votes from Trump.

Republicans have been probing other counties in Michigan and suggesting the need for investigations into other states where Dominion machines were used.

I draw confidence from the fact that every judge he’s come up against has been “Show me the evidence or STFD and STFU. The best this is going to lead to for him is a recount. He’d need to flip too many states for this to work and he hasn’t been appealing his losses towards the supreme court from what I’ve heard/the court loses have been so one sided that they got thrown out and thus can’t be appealed.

The US cases began accelerating within 10-14 days of Sturgis across the Midwest. The cases have exploded since as people returned home. Continued pressure to reopen despite failing to meet criteria for doing so, and colder weather are now driving this.

Had we put masking/social distancing in place, we would not have gotten to this point at this time. We would have had time and space to further contain the spread. The GOP simply ignored it, and don’t care about the consequences.

He is claiming that over two million votes were stolen, his lawyer was on Fox claiming to have thousands of pages of affidavits and they are not going to let go of this hot item as long as they can couch in such a way as to imply massive voter fraud over several states.

Of course, that is the basis for his future career as President-in-exile for the politically dispossessed (as in, “those who lost and are still sore about it and cannot move on”)

If it had only come down to PA, this could turn into a major blowup, but as it is, they cannot begin to prove massive widespread enough fraud to have the overall outcome questioned.

And yes, the Warren article was directed at those machines being tweaked to favor the GOP. They are really good at turning this argument to their favor and a number of people seem to be buying it.

My I-Mac (21.5”, 2.3 GHz Dual-Core i5 CPU, 8GB 2133MHz DDR4 Memory) got upgraded this AM.

Hit Download and got the screen, which just sat there for 2 minutes with the “Download Time” graphic increasing from 2 hours to ten days. All of a sudden, it started to perk up, and 35 minutes later it was done. Install took ten minutes. Pretty painless, actually, but then again, the box is only seven months old.

Well, there was that study that said immunity seems to drop off after about 6 months, so that checks out with the timeline.

If BoJo gets it again, it could be serious. The first time he got it, he was on a ventilator.

Still learning my way around Big Sur. Found a couple apps no longer work but all my chess and bridge software seems to be stronger now.

But, are we really sure of that? Given the public acceptance of “immunity” there could possibly be asymptomatic re-infection that no one is looking for

Or, it may show as negative in a test but who knows? The “reinfection” could be a flare up where that is worse than the original. There are a bunch of stories where someone gets sick, minimally or moderately, then relapses and gets really sick or dies.

I’m not willing to bet 100% on anything.

Another thing that might make the military more ‘liberal’ than people think is that many military people are well travelled and educated.

Very often, when I dig into the background of military people, I will discover they have one or more degrees in a subject. Very often history or political-sci.

With this experience and education it’s hard to hold on to the authoritarianism passing as conservatism these days.

This is very true of the Officers, but not of your average enlisted member.

A lot of NCO’s choose a hybrid Military Operational Speciality/College blend of continuing education in their upward career trajectories (Jim Wright (Stonekettle) is an excellent example), but there are a lot of kids who volunteer out of high school.

The estimated cost of repair is $15,000,000. New cables are on the way but will not arrive until December.

For Republicans, that’s $15,000,000 which could go to wealthy donors. Why spend such money discovering planets, organic molecules, or other things you can’t exploit for power?

And in today’s episode of STUPID TREK…

A part-time Colorado resident who documents his disrespect for public lands on social media learned Friday what happens when defendants try to go toe-to-toe with a federal judge.

David Lesh agreed to a compromise on Oct. 2 that allowed him to enter U.S. Forest Service lands if he followed the same rules as everyone else. But after he flouted that agreement 19 days later by posting a picture on Instagram of himself defecating in Maroon Lake, U.S. Magistrate Gordon Gallagher lowered the boom.

As of Friday, Lesh, 35, is, for the foreseeable future, banned from entering millions of acres of U.S. Forest Service lands because of the photo posted on Oct. 21, Gallagher said.

In addition to the ban, the judge forbid Lesh from posting any picture or video on any social media platform of himself or anyone else violating state or federal laws on any federal lands under the jurisdiction of the court, including National Forests, National Monuments, Bureau of Land Management land and other federal property.

re: #105 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo
But see, there’s plenty we don’t know about the era of the construction of the Pyramids, because a lot of knowledge has been lost.

I tend to think long-term preservation of knowledge actually becomes a more difficult problem as records become digital. Many file formats, encoding/decoding algorithms, and storage methods are currently proprietary and under patent. By analogy, imagine a huge chunk of the world’s digital knowledge having been stored solely on 8-Track. All the K-Tel Greatest Hits collections in existence wouldn’t save us from the fact that there is no longer any working hardware that can play back 8-track here in the year 2137, and perpetual patents prevent anyone from building one.

Example, kinda: Frank Zappa died leaving a huge amount of unfinished and unreleased music in his (literal) vault. To his credit or to his fault, he was an early-adopter of various digital recording technologies in the 1980s. When a serious attempt was made to explore what was in the vault, it was found that quite a lot of his material was recorded in obscure digital formats for which there remains literally no means of playing it back. Companies long dissolved, technologies long obsolete and abandoned. These things are probably lost forever. I figure a lot of modern culture will suffer a similar fate.

I have a collection of paper photographs handed down and discarded by my various ancestors. The photos date back to the late 1800s. They are of no particular significance except to the extent that they accurately depict the age in which they were made. I think about how photos are treated these days. Digital photography, for all its convenience, makes it entirely too easy to discard snapshots whose significance might not become apparent until years or decades later.

I could extend this rant into ideas like the way modern buildings are constructed, such that pretty much every modern house and retail structure has a life expectancy of less than 50 years, but I’m tired of typing and nobody cares anyway.

What was I saying?

Wingnuttery on the bench is destroying the court system in Douglas County, Nebr.

If they were litigants, a judge might very well have declared them in contempt — of COVID-19.

But they were judges, and in the words of a longtime court official, no one tells a judge what to do.

So it has gone at the Douglas County Courthouse in recent weeks as one judge didn’t require trial spectators to wear masks in his courtroom and reassured attorneys that they didn’t have to, either.

Douglas County District Judge Peter Bataillon also routinely asks inmates appearing remotely from the Douglas County Jail to remove their masks, frustrating corrections officials.

The judge said he does so because the mask and the computer software make it nearly impossible for his court reporter to hear and take an accurate account of an inmate’s pleadings.

Another district judge, Greg Schatz, felt ill the last week of October and began exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. A first test was negative; the second was positive.

Within a day or two, he showed up at the courthouse and was told to go home.

He did for the weekend, then returned Nov. 2 — despite two judges telling him to stay away and despite guidelines from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that recommend a 10-day quarantine. Schatz has told others that he had a third test that was negative.

And, of course, the pandemic hasn’t stopped at the courthouse doors. Two Juvenile Court judges and their staffs are in quarantine after positive tests among their staffs or family members. A County Court judge tested positive and another is in quarantine.

One court official estimated that seven to 10 staff members of the County Court have tested positive. In addition, a handful of employees of the Douglas County Attorney’s Office have tested positive. That has prompted those who have it, and others around them, to quarantine.

Several judges and lawyers are asking the state supreme court to allow the Douglas County Court in Omaha to either scale back or shut down. Jury trials have been postponed to January 1.

Well, it’s not exactly unexpected theological revelation that *people*, like even “evangelical pastors”, are prone to, y’know, mortality - we being (in anybody’s cosmology) mere mortals. I just wonder if it was COVID that carried Bishop Jackson off. Mortality is unavoidable: the Coronavirus, not so much….

They’re not saying what it was. That seems to be the case with a lot of Republicans dying from this, because they cannot tell their base voters it’s serious and dangerous.

They will lie right up until they die in the name of their faith (whether Christianity or Conservatism).

It would appear Republican is a risk factor.

That was not the case with the later Shuttle flights, which mostly had the same tasking as this flight, getting to and from the Space Station. The STS did combine personnel and supply transfers and carried on with the odd satellite launch, but it was not even remotely like the missions in the 60s.

As the Republicans continue to sink our economy in the name of feudalism:

RCEP: Asia-Pacific countries form world’s largest trading bloc (BBC)

Fifteen countries have formed the world’s largest trading bloc, covering nearly a third of the global economy.

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is made up of 10 Southeast Asian countries, as well as South Korea, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

The pact is seen as an extension of China’s influence in the region.

The deal excludes the US, which withdrew from a rival Asia-Pacific trade pact in 2017.

This is astounding. I had never heard of it before today.

The memorial to Newton that would have eclipsed the pyramids

These were the designs for a giant memorial to Sir Isaac Newton drawn in 1784 by French architect Etienne-Louis Boullee.

The ‘Cenotaph to Newton’ was a proposed resting place for the great scientist, planned 60 years after his death, although it was never made. Had it been built it would surely rank as a manmade wonder of the world.

At 500ft (150m), the cenotaph would have been the tallest built structure in the world, overshadowing the then tallest building - Strasbourg Cathedral at 466ft (142m) - and the Great Pyramids of Giza at 455ft (139m).

President Lincoln to General Sherman, after learning of the success of the gamble:

When you were about leaving Atlanta for the Atlantic coast, I was anxious, if not fearful; but feeling that you were the better judge, and remembering that ‘nothing risked, nothing gained,’ I did not interfere. Now, the undertaking being a success, the honor is yours; for I believe none of us went further than to acquiesce.
