Washington Post Editorial Board Calls for Trump’s Top COVID Adviser to Be Fired

Politics • Views: 24,602

Donald Trump’s closest adviser on the COVID-19 pandemic is a right wing ideologue who’s been pushing the bogus idea of herd immunity, also known as “just let ‘em all die.”

Yesterday he posted a comment on Twitter that sounded to many people (including yours truly) like a call for anti-lockdown violence in Michigan, where Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has already been the target of a right wing kidnap/murder plot.

Today the Washington Post editorial board calls for him to be fired immediately: Scott Atlas’s Michigan lockdown comments will sicken people. Fire him.

SCOTT ATLAS is a neuroradiologist, not an infectious disease expert, nor an epidemiologist. As President Trump’s leading adviser on the coronavirus pandemic, he continues to make statements that will cause more illness and death. He ought to be fired immediately.

[…]

Dr. Atlas has frequently belittled lockdowns and pandemic restrictions, saying they have deleterious knock-on effects and are unnecessary, and that only the “vulnerable” need protection. Of the Michigan restrictions, he wrote on Twitter: “The only way this stops is if people rise up. You get what you accept. #FreedomMatters #StepUp.” So, while the governor was desperately trying to save lives by slowing the virus transmission, Dr. Atlas was urging people to disobey and revolt. This is incendiary talk, especially since the governor was the target of a kidnapping plot foiled by the FBI before the election. Dr. Atlas later insisted he would never encourage violence and was talking about voting and peaceful protest.

He was talking about “voting?” After the election was over? Yes, this guy definitely should be fired. And then Donald Trump should resign because he’s the real problem.

The notion that a single Klan member is a racist, but a thousand are worth listening to is paint-by-numbers morality. It must end.

Trump Fans Say Trump Most Popular Loser Ever To Lose Presidency By Losing (Wonkette)

Dragging the Los Angeles Times:

What’s scary, though, is that the media and political moderates still insist on elevating the voices of Trump supporters, even in defeat. There are almost six million more Biden voters — a decisive margin fueled by Black women and Native Americans specifically — but we have to endure more profiles in bigotry.

Saturday, the Los Angeles Times, which is based in the California city of Los Angeles, devoted its entire letters page to Trump supporters. Biden won more than 70 percent of the vote in Los Angeles County, so it’s possible the letters page featured every Trump voter in the area. This is quite the Affirmative Action program for conservatives who normally rail against quotas.

Trump carried my home town of Greenville, South Carolina, with just 58 percent of the vote. That’s less than both Romney and McCain. When I was growing up, the Greenville News never set aside an entire letters page for Mondale and Dukakis voters. No one cared what my Democratic-voting relatives thought. South Carolina, the buckle of the Bible Belt, was defined by its conservative majority. Democrats have won the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections. America isn’t a center-right nation, no matter how much that frustrates Republicans. They can gerrymander congressional majorities and benefit from a rural state Senate bias, but that doesn’t change the nation’s actual ideological makeup.

If anyone lives in a bubble, it’s probably conservatives, who were stunned Georgia flipped blue. The New York Times recently profiled Republicans in Atlanta, which went full General Sherman on Trump, and they believed there was no way Biden could win. They were obviously wrong, so where are the followup pieces on all the suburbanites who rejected Trump?

If you dig a little, you find out that Ben is another guy in the right-wing infotainment circuit who failed to make it in conventional media. He tried to be a screenwriter and it never took off. He may have some “principles” that inform his opinions, but he is also putting on a show and meeting the demands of his audience…who demand to be told how smart and moral they are at all times, and how immoral, stupid, and deserving of cruelty the people they are uncomfortable with are.

It’s an incredibly lucrative gig that’s got a low bar for entry, and authentic creativity is actually threatening to the audience base, so it’s the perfect refuge for hacks.

Ben is a slightly better hack than the other hacks.

Also notable—and easy to watch the process of, because it was very recent—is that Ben’s parents did an enormous ad buy/astroturf campaign to raise the media profile of Abby Shapiro, who’s now doing a similar social media grift but with an emphasis on tradwife-type stuff like modesty and femininity.

Which, to my point about “this is a show”…it doesn’t matter whether these people believe any of it, the way they assemble and present information is being fitted to a pre-existing right-wing entertainment mould in a very deliberate way.

I’m not caught up on that series of excerpt-reads from Shapiro’s book, but the bits I did catch are…cringey bad.

And yet there is very clearly an audience for that kind of writing, where all the bits are familiar, comforting, and repeat back the reader’s deeply ugly assumptions about the world and their wildly inaccurate understanding of themselves as heroes who get to hurt everyone and enjoy it.

…because it’s porn. That’s what I’m always saying and saying with conviction: most of these people are not thinking at a level deeper than personal gratification in the moment, and all of the smugness and contempt and revanchism is exciting and stimulating in ways that are identical to a Penthouse letter.

Yet at least thirty newspapers called on Bill Clinton to resign, and the New York Times reported on that in 1998:

TESTING OF A PRESIDENT: THE EDITORIALS; At Least 30 Papers Call for Resignation (Felicity Barringer, September 14, 1998)

Most papers called for Richard Nixon to resign.

Editorials go against President Nixon (UPI, August 7, 1974)

Trump however gets a pass. Must be money in propping him up.

From that UPI article, it turns out the New York Times defended President Nixon as well:

But the New York Times came out Wednesday in support of the President’s present position that he not resign.

The Times said it saw “considerable merit in the President’s attitude…that he intends to ‘allow the Constitution to be the overriding factor.’”

“To accept this statement as a guilty plea and suggest that resignation would now close the book on Watergate would leave too many loose ends, too many questions unresolved,” the Times said.

“It would do nothing to inhibit subsequent fostering of the myth of a President hounded out of office by his political enemies. Doubts could be created whether the President would actually have been convicted in an impeachment trial, whether his departure from office was really justified by the facts.”

Trump has always been able to get out of pretty much anything with lawsuits that delay things, but here his problem is that the presumption is that the counts and certifications will proceed unless there’s overwhelming reason to stop them, and he doesn’t have that. He must have thought he could stay President indefinitely just by continually filing new appeals, the way he’s kept his tax records from being released.

And of course, any argument he had to keep THAT going dies at noon on 20Jan21.

In the words of former president G. W. Bush…

Oops, I wasn’t quite right about that being a Bush quote.

“I thought: Wait a minute. It’s [Trump’s inauguration speech] not rational but it’s also not politics. It’s not what a president does,” said Clinton. She had hoped to hear Trump make an attempt to reach out to non-supporters. “I hoped I would hear a little of that, I didn’t hear any of that. And that carnage in the street and the dark dystopian vision. I was sitting there like just, wow. I couldn’t believe it. And George W. Bush says to me, ‘Well, that was some weird shit,’” she recalled.

Bush’s description of the speech has been lore for some time, after New York magazine published a story in which three people said to have heard Bush make the remark. Turns out, from the mouth of Clinton herself, the rumors are true.

Is it safe to host Thanksgiving during COVID? Omaha experts weigh in (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR version: No
Slightly longer version: Variations of no.

As pandemic concerns and warnings rise in the health care community, so too do questions about celebrating the November and December holidays with family and friends.

The safest option, local experts told The World-Herald, is to celebrate in person with people who live in your immediate household, and to gather virtually with people who live outside your household via a meetup app such as Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp.

Experts also recommend following the guidelines set forth by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Panhandle Public Health District’s risk dial has been moved from “severe risk of transmission” to “holy shit.”

The public health districts’ risk dials can only be moved after going through political vetting from the governor’s office.

Panhandle Public Health District Dashboard

All towns in the Nebraska Panhandle are now shown as “severe risk” except Broadwater, Lisco, and Llewellyn (which still have no cases to date).

Total cases: 4,644 (9 recorded yesterday)
November 12 revised up to +265
November 6 revised up to +265
November 3 revised up to +143
October 23 revised up to +106

I’m Not Going to Be Comfortable Until Joe Biden’s Hand Comes Off the Bible, Charlie Pierce

When people tell you what they are, etc. etc.

If you want to stretch the point, remember that, when Bill Clinton was elected in 1992, Republicans in Washington declared that they represented only those people who didn’t vote for him. (Bob Dole was particularly fond of that talking point.) And it’s certainly no secret that the Republicans from Mitch McConnell on down decided that the full powers of Article II were not necessarily the province of Barack Obama. The notion that Democratic officeholders are not legitimately elected is now an article of faith among Republicans, probably because they do not consider many Democratic voters of color to be legitimate voters.

Cities here are tired of being held hostage by Gov. Ricketts.

Kearney City Council to consider mask ordinance at emergency meeting (Kearney, Nebr. Hub)

KEARNEY — The Kearney City Council will conduct an emergency meeting and public hearing Tuesday to consider a temporary mask ordinance for the city.

Tuesday’s meeting follows a presentation last week in which executives of Kearney’s two hospitals told the City Council that the volume of COVID-19 cases is overwhelming nurses and other medical staff members in Kearney. They said the public’s assistance is necessary to avert a public health disaster.

“We need more happening at the community level. We need the public’s help,” said Bill Calhoun, CEO of Kearney Regional Medical Center.

In response, the council on Tuesday will hear recommendations from the Kearney Board of Health and then discuss whether to approve a recommended mask ordinance.

According to City Attorney Michael Tye, a proposed emergency ordinance would take effect three days after passage. The ordinance spells out when and where masks would be required, but it doesn’t include restrictions or controls over business operations, except that businesses and public places must post the mask requirement and require masks inside.

Tougher restrictions not enacted today, governor encouraging diligence (Grand Island Independent)

YORK - Governor Pete Ricketts said Monday morning that the COVID-related hospitalizations in the state have remained at 20 percent of total capacity and heightened restrictions are not yet being required.

If that rate moves to 25 percent, however, tougher restrictions will be put in place.

cf. Britt’s fourteen defining characteristics of fascism:

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

They were like that. Either the Best or the Worst, rarely were they meh. I remember seeing Paul pull one of the Best shows after he’d sobered up and I couldn’t help but wonder how things would have been if he hadn’t been so terrified of success?

I have always kind of had the impression that it wasn’t so much fear of success as it was fear of the identity crisis success could cause for him. If you are at least partly defining yourself by your rejection of society and/or its trappings of and definitions of success, how can you work for, or even accept, success without negating yourself?
I think I can empathize with and understand that idea and ones like it.
