Joe Biden spent half a century in DC. Joe knows and has seen every political type that is in Congress now. There is nothing new under the sun. The script may have been updated but Joe has been dealing with the same game for a lot of America has been alive.

We haven’t figured out how to honestly do an informed democracy in the internet age and that is why I am glad that we voted in the ant-social media/internet guy.

No Amount Of Training Could Have Prepared Cat For First Experience Seeing Mouse In Real Life

SARASOTA, FL—Expressing his shock at having been taken completely off guard, local cat Muffins acknowledged Monday that no amount of training could have prepared him for his first experience encountering a mouse in real life. “Man, I’ve spent hours and hours simulating a confrontation with a mouse, but when the real moment comes, all that practice goes right out the window,” said the two-year-old American shorthair, confirming that his daily regimen of pouncing, scratching, and running in circles around his apartment had done virtually nothing to help equip him for the sensation of coming face-to-face with a genuine rodent. “I’ll admit I used to be pretty cocky. I’ve destroyed so many balls with feathers on them that I can practically do it in my sleep. One time I even fought a moth to a draw, so I always figured if I ever saw a mouse I’d make quick work of it, but it’s not like that in the real world. Instinct takes over, and it doesn’t matter how sharp your claws are, that’s the moment when you find out if you’ve got what it takes, and let me tell you what—real mice don’t have catnip inside them, buddy, you can bet on that.” Muffins added that since he was now a killer, he didn’t know if he’d be able to return to living in a pretend fantasy world.

Trump’s last gasp is to try and force a political/constitutional crisis that goes to the House.

He’s trying to kneecap the incoming administration.

He’s trying to sabotage the incoming administration’s ability to do the job from day 1. He wants to see Biden fail because he’s a sociopath who will wreck everything since he can’t get his way.

This isn’t a legal strategy. It’s an extortion scheme. It’s a confidence game. It’s how a crime syndicate operates when they know that the prosecutors are getting close.

After January 20, people are going to come forward with all kinds of stories about how Trump broke the law. Just watch.

It was a getaway attempt worthy of Ian Fleming, but in the end, a suspected US fraudster proved he was no James Bond.

Matthew Piercey, 44, a California man accused of financial crimes, briefly evaded justice when the FBI tried to arrest him on Monday morning.

He first fled by car and then used a sea scooter to hide from agents underwater in a frigid lake.

Agents watched his bubbles on the surface for around 25 minutes before he emerged and was handcuffed.

He is accused of leading a $35m (£27m) Ponzi scheme at his local church.

Sea scooters, also known as diver propulsion vehicles, are underwater devices that can pull a person wearing scuba gear. They were used for the underwater battle in the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball and have been employed by real-life militaries around the world.

Officials said that when they moved in to arrest Mr Piercey he fled in a pickup truck, twice driving off the road. He was then seen jumping in to the lake near the city of Redding with a strange device in his hand.

Yup, Snopes rated it false, in 2015.

However, since then there have been plenty of outbursts by Trump that convey the same ideas.

Plus it has been reported that those who have investigated Trump’s personal life and his associates, such as that notorious butler at Mar-a-brag stated things about Trump that have gone woefully under-scrutinized.

State senator called Omaha woman a fanatic and stupid; where to complain? (Goes to the Lincoln Journal-Star)

This would be the asshat bigot Republican state senator from North Platte, Mike Groene.

He is the chair of the state Education Committee. This is also the guy who says he got Covid-19 and was glad to get it, because it “will help herd immunity.”

Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte set off a flurry of controversy earlier this month when he announced he had COVID-19 and was glad to get it, have it over with and contribute to herd immunity.

Nebraskans contacted him to complain about what they characterized as his lack of knowledge and compassion about the coronavirus. And he wasn’t shy about hitting back, telling them they needed to crawl out from under their beds, stop living in fear and using it to scare others.

His emails to two of those constituents, one from North Platte and one from Omaha, earned him complaints to the Nebraska Ombudsman’s Office and the media.

Carol Gottsch of Omaha filed a complaint with the Ombudsman’s Office about the exchange she had with Groene after she sent him an email about his comments.

“What followed were three emails from Mr. Groene which were full of misinformation, as well as laced with condescending, name-calling remarks,” she told the Ombudsman’s Office.

He called her a socialist and described her as self-righteous, she said.

When she told him his information was not medically factual regarding COVID-19, he told her she was a know-it-all and suggested she keep her self-righteous opinions to herself.

“He called me a fanatic and stupid,” she complained.

What really bums me out is my 65th birthday is on January 31st and I had planned to travel up and down the west coast on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight and top it off with a birthday dinner at the Seattle Space Needle.

First Amtrak had to cancel, train service reduced and overbooked.

Then The Space Needle restaurant is closed.

Then the backup plan was to dine at The Pacific Dining Car in Los Angeles (now closed)

Then I made reservations at Musso & Frank Grill (now cancelled)

Then I made reservation for a birthday dinner at Rao’s Hollywood (And that just closed due to COVID yesterday).

Guess I just get to sleep in on my birthday…

To someone who lives in Omaha or Lincoln, anything west of that is “western Nebraska.”

Omaha is on the eastern state line and Lincoln is about forty miles southwest of Omaha. The rest of the four hundred miles of Nebraska are “western” to people in the populated portion of the state.

That said, one of the writers at Seeing Red Nebraska now has twelve family members with Covid-19 as the governor’s genocide continues.

COVID-19 Hits Home

Twelve of my family members have had Covid-19 in the last 2 weeks, all out in western Nebraska, aged 3 to 89, North Platte and Stapleton to be exact.

I am not saying this for sympathy or prayers, I am an atheist. Just everyone, please be careful. Don’t eat at restaurants. Wear your masks. Do NOT gather for holidays. There is no leadership. No one is coming to save us. I luckily have not been exposed precisely because I declined to go to an outdoor event in Kearney on Oct. 24th. I decided it was too risky for me when truly our leaders should have decided that for everyone weeks ago. I chose not to go despite the fact I so desperately want to see my family. So there are Republicans in Nevada Arizona who support our Constitution. We will see shortly whether the Georgia Republicans withstand pressure and certify Biden as winner of their Electoral votes. Given Kemp’s history of voter suppression, it is surprising that the state so far is standing tall and protecting the rights of their citizens.

Trump is playing a game of seeing whether the GOP establishment will work with him on his coup d’etat; he has nothing to lose by exploring this gambit. The nation has its future and survival at stake. But Trump? if he fails, he is where he would be if he conceded now; if he succeeds, he can remake this nation into a banana republic under the permanent control of the Republican Party, run in perpetuity by a member of the Trump family. Trump and the GOP certainly have no concern about the damage to the nation by delaying the transition until ???? December 14? Later?

Via Snopes;

NEW YORK (AP) — Now at amazon.com: insulin and inhalers.

The retail colossus opened an online pharmacy Tuesday that allows customers to order medication or prescription refills, and have them delivered to their front door in a couple of days.

The potential impact of Amazon’s arrival in the pharmaceutical space rippled through that sector immediately. The stocks of CVS Health Corp., Walgreens and Rite Aid all tumbled Tuesday.

The big chains rely on their pharmacies for a steady flow of shoppers who may also grab a snack or shampoo or groceries on the way out. All have upped online services and touted their abilities to deliver prescriptions and other goods as the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed more consumers to stay home. But amazon.com has mastered these things, and its online store is infinitely larger, with millions of loyal shoppers already buying books, TVs and just about anything else.

FAA poised to clear Boeing 737 Max to fly again (Associated Press)

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected on Wednesday to clear Boeing’s 737 Max to fly again after grounding the jet for nearly two years due to a pair of crashes that killed 346 people.

Agency Administrator Steve Dickson said last week the FAA was in the final stages of reviewing changes to the Max that would make it safe to return to the skies.

“I will lift the grounding order only after our safety experts are satisfied that the aircraft meets certification standards,” he said in a statement.

The move would come after numerous congressional hearings on the crashes that led to criticism of the FAA for lax oversight and Boeing for rushing to implement a new software system that put profits over safety and ultimately led to the firing of its CEO.

I wonder how many people will use this Amazon service, due to the malign presence of pharmacy benefit managers who steer insured persons to their favorite pharmacies or try to coerce you into ordering by mail from them. I’m already “that’s a big NOPE DAWG from me” on ordering directly from ExpressScripts, especially when they tried to charge me $1000 for a scrip that GoodRX could get me for $624.22.

The only way this really works out is if Amazon sets up as a pharmacy benefit manager.

The article notes that Amazon intends to set up a PBM.

Express Scripts manages TriCare’s prescription payments, but Tricare Standard does not limit what pharmacy you can use.

TriCare keeps sending me letters trying to get me to sign up for Tricare Prime, but they limit who you (well, my wife) can see and which drugs you can get at which pharmacies, none of which you find around here.

Here’s a story about a guy who tried to escape from the FBI by diving into Lake Shasta with an underwater “sea scooter.” The Fibbies waited him out and he surfaced after ~25 minutes.

The guy was wanted for a Ponzi scheme where he and a partner extracted $35 million from a number of people at his church in Redding, California. That’d be Bethel Church in Redding. You know, the church where they tried to pray a toddler back to life a year ago, where the senior pastor’s wife (also a pastor) was a complete and utter shitheel when she was told to wear a mask and whose “prophets” persist in thinking and saying that Trump won the election. That Bethel Redding.

Why am I not surprised that a couple of con men found it ripe for a Ponzi scheme?

For everyone who keeps asking for the ability to edit tweets on Twitter or kick off the Nazis: You’re in luck, they did neither.

Twitter is launching tweets that disappear in 24 hours called “Fleets” globally, echoing social media sites like Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram that already have disappearing posts.

The company says the ephemeral tweets, which it calls “fleets” because of their fleeting nature, are designed to allay the concerns of new users who might be turned off by the public and permanent nature of normal tweets.

Fleets can’t be retweeted and they won’t have “likes.” People can respond to them, but the replies show up as direct messages to the original tweeter, not as a public response, turning any back-and-forth into a private conversation instead of a public discussion.

Twitter tested the feature in Brazil, Italy, India, and South Korea, before rolling it out globally.

My asshat representative who says he only represents Republicans, it figures he would say this.

Nebraska

Congratulated/accepted the result

Sen. Ben Sasse, R. Nov. 8. “Melissa and I congratulate the next president, Joe Biden, and the next vice president, Kamala Harris. Today in our house we pray for both President Trump and President-Elect Biden, that both would be wise in the execution of their respective duties during this important time in our nation. Despite the policy differences many of us will have with the incoming administration, every American’s civic responsibilities are the same: root for every president’s success, work together where we can, and debate passionately and respectfully.”

Rejected, cast doubt on, or conspicuously failed to accept the result

Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb. 3. Nov. 6. “Everyone’s vote matters and should be counted. We must ensure every vote is authentic, timely, and legal. I’m concerned about the ballot-counting patterns that lack transparency and accountability. It’s inexcusable for ballot-counting locations to exclude Republican observers.”

Ambiguous

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb. 2. Nov. 7. “We’re always going to respect our constitution and enforce our constitution. We’re going to ensure that every citizen who’s voted on time and lawfully has their vote counted. We will respect the rule of the voters, because that’s what we do here in America and we’ve been doing it since 1788. We want to do it as transparently as possible because we want to make sure that folks have confidence that ballots are being counted rightfully.”
Sen. Deb Fischer, R. Nov. 5. “I’m proud of Nebraska for administering a free and fair election and counting all ballots in accordance with state law. All other states must do the same under the rules set out by their state legislatures. This is what our Constitution requires and what the voters deserve.”
Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb. 1. Nov. 6. “There are a lot of questions and anxiety across America at this moment; fortunately, in #Nebraska our elections are safe. The integrity of the election process demands absolute adherence to legal standards. This is only fair for now and the future.”

Because it’s impossible for viruses to cross the Missouri River (that’s just science):

LINCOLN — Nebraska and Iowa have embarked on two different paths for dealing with COVID-19.

On Monday, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds became the latest state executive to impose a statewide mask mandate in an effort to control the spread of the virus. The move came as Iowa ranked third in the nation for new cases per capita.

In Nebraska, with a fifth-place ranking, Gov. Pete Ricketts held fast to his opposition to a broad mask requirement. His response, when asked about the Iowa mandate, was to say that every state is different and that masks are only one tool to fight the pandemic.

Hospital staff and board members made their plea to the Scottsbluff City Council for a mask mandate during Monday night’s meeting. They renewed a call hospital leadership made over the weekend in a letter addressed to local officials for consideration of such a mandate.

Mayor Raymond Gonzales said the council could not make a decision regarding the mandate at the meeting.

The reason the decision couldn’t be made at the meeting regards state law regarding public meetings: Items which are not on the agenda may not be acted upon. That said, the Scottsbluff City Council can either schedule an emergency meeting with Regional West Medical Center’s item on the agenda, or put it on the regular agenda of the next meeting.

This part is fookin’ nuts:

The statute requires creating a board of health consisting of five members. By statute those are the mayor, who shall be chairperson, a physician, who shall be medical adviser, the chief of police, who shall be secretary and quarantine officer, and two other members. The board then creates the rules and regulations.

Scottsbluff currently does not have a board of health.

The largest city in the Panhandle does not have a board of health. (The statute actually says licensed medical personnel, so an RN can be on the board of health.)

My village has a board of health. It consists of the Sidney VA nurse (who lives across the street from me), the chairwoman of the village board, the town marshal, and two members of the village.

WTF, Scottsbluff?

Paul Waldman makes my earlier point perfectly. Money quote:

The difference between the two parties on this question is just extraordinary. As I’ve said in other contexts, Republicans are the party of “Yes we can” while Democrats are the party of “Maybe we shouldn’t.” They’re forever afraid that someone will criticize them or that being too tough will backfire, something Republicans never worry about.

Which leads to this disheartening line in the NBC News story:

One of the reasons [Biden] has given aides is that he believes investigations would alienate the more than 73 million Americans who voted for Trump, the people familiar with the discussions said.

You have got to be kidding me.

Those 73 million Americans voted for the most corrupt president in American history, a con man and a liar and a bigot and a tax cheat and a sexual predator and someone who as we speak is poisoning our democracy on his way out the door. And Biden is worried that exposing his misdeeds will hurt their feelings?

We can’t simply act as though the four-year ordeal we all just lived through was nothing but a bad dream. We need to understand the full scope of the damage and how our system failed to stop it. In some cases, that will involve investigating Donald Trump and those who helped him, and if there’s a way to hold them accountable, that’s just what we should do. It’s not a distraction. It’s an obligation.

The reason the GOP is the party of “Yes we can,” is because no one has ever told them “No you can’t,” and the result has been increasing GOP cynicism, criminality, and now flat out embrace white nationalism and authoritarianism. Ford pardoned Nixon. HW pardoned (at Barr’s insistence) a slew of Iran-Contra criminals. Obama let the Bush crime family walk. And if Biden poo-poos Trump criminality, American democracy may have just gotten a four year reprieve, with Trump, or someone worse waiting in the wings in 2024 to pick up where Fat Donnie left off.

This shit must end NOW!

Trump will leave office soon. But we can’t let him escape accountability for his misdeeds.

The Republicans politicising masks made it into Scottsbluff City Council’s debate, with bullshyte talking points already debunked.

Bruner and Holloway spent considerable time addressing mask efficacy, and how COVID-19 is dissimilar to the flu.

Council members Terry Schaub and Shaver said they were opposed to a mask mandate, and often repeated that a mandate was too broad and would require people to mask on private property.

Bruner pushed back on those assertions, saying wearing a mask was important to protect vulnerable people in the community.

“A simple step to wear masks and to have hand hygiene and do the different things is not too much to ask,” Bruner said. “And you want to talk about liberty, we all wear seat belts, we all abide by the speed limit, we don’t go around shooting people because ‘I have freedom of choice, I’m going to go shoot everybody,’ those are reasonable things for a society,

Counterpoint from the wingnut caucus at the Washington Post:

An eight-point plan for Trump to leave the presidency and win it back in 2024 (Marc Thiessen)

President Trump has every right to pursue recounts and legal challenges to the 2020 election. But he needs to realize these challenges won’t change the final result. This is not 2000, when just 537 votes in a single state determined the result. The president would need to overcome a deficit of tens of thousands of votes in three states to win. That will not happen.

So, Trump needs a way forward. How he exits the White House could leave an indelible impression on voters’ minds. No one likes a sore loser. Here is an eight-point plan for how Trump can leave the presidency with the best chance to reclaim it in four years.

well if COVID keeps killing people at the rate it does, we may have to declassify Wyoming as a state due to depopulation dropping it into being only designated as a Territory…..

The 1787 Northwest Ordinance established a minimum population to create a state out of that territory (60,000), but the Constitution itself is silent on the matter of the number of people to create a state.

Mostly the criteria were during slavery that a slave state had to be pared with a free state in order for both to be admitted to the Union to maintain the balance of power.

In the Civil War and Reconstruction, with Democrats out of the government, the GOP used their power to admit eight new states.

After Reconstruction was over, pairing off states has been based on party alignment, admitting a Republican-controlled and a Democratic-controlled state to maintain the balance of power.

There is no particular requirement to admit a state, however. The proposed state must submit a constitution representing a republican form of government which is approved. After that, simple majorities in both houses can admit the state. States may not be created out of existing states without approval of the state legislature and the proposed new state, nor may states be joined together without approval of both state legislatures.

Boundary disputes are settled by the Supreme Court (the Toledo Strip, Ellis Island, Carter Lake Iowa being examples).

The claim West Virginia is not a legally-constituted state arises from a Supreme Court case called Virginia v West Virginia in 1871, specifically the dissent (the case was decided 6-3). The Qnut congressman who claims West Virginia is not a state relies on the dissent in that case (though dissents do not hold the force of law).

Fiat justitia ruat caelum. “Let justice be done though the heavens fall.”

There should be no talk of pardons, or of “going easy” on Trump and his goons, and certainly no talk about either should be done to “move on.” People are dead, our institutions have been undermined at every turn, our justice system turned into a mockery of itself, and an administration so sure it would face no consequences that the fucking Attorney General responded to the Speaker of the House about being held in contempt by snarkily asking her where the cuffs were.

My best suggestion to Biden is “let the chips fall where they may.” The DOJ should be free once again to act independently of the WH, rather than being used as a political arm of such. If they should find evidence that the Trump admin committed criminal acts, then they should be free to pursue whatever course of action they deem fitting. Same goes with Congress, the House and (if we take the majority) Senate should not have to worry about WH interference in their investigations. Again, let them follow the evidence and take the steps they feel necessary. The problem the last four years is not so much that all the above were investigating Trump’s “enemies,” it’s that they did so because he demanded them to do so.

Investigations were conducted in the wake of Watergate, and many laws were created or updated to address not only criminal acts by executive branch members by also to address corruption in the gov’t as a whole. We just spent the last 4 years watching many of those laws flouted, ignored, violated, and even stomped flat. If we don’t do something to fix all that, which requires investigations to determine what was done and how to prevent it in the future, then next go around we might find ourselves watching helplessly as somebody competent installs themself as “President for Life.”

This really is the sort of shit you expect to see in videos of old East Bloc countries or third-world banana republics when the dictator dies/suddenly removed from power. The state mouthpieces reporting about how the supporters of the old regime are stricken with grief, despondent, and angry over how their “dear leader” is gone.

I have a very good pizzeria down the road that delivers. They helped celebrate my birthday this year.

If you guys ever make it here we will definitely order from there and take down to the river.

re: #127 Dread Pirate Ron

I was just thinking of the Dakotas earlier today and maybe we need to set a minimum population for a state at 1-1.5 million people.

There was another organised territory which required a minimum number of free residents to become a state, the Territory South of the River Ohio (May 26, 1790 to June 1, 1796, when it was admitted as the State of Tennessee).

The Southwest Territory as it was more commonly known followed the Northwest Ordinance (with the exception of the ban on slavery), requiring a territorial legislature when the territory had 5,000 adult males, and permission to seek statehood when the population was 60,000 (excluding slaves).

As for putting in a minimum population, that would require a constitutional amendment, so start counting to thirteen states with a lower population than that and when you reach it, the amendment fails.

As prospects for an effective vaccination for the coronavirus have improved for the coming year, Donald Trump has grown outwardly resentful that he won’t be in the Oval Office to take the credit for it,” the Daily Beast reports.

“The president had said he envisioned large, public, mask-free events—particularly when the weather grew warmer in, what he anticipated to be, a second term—and rallies to celebrate the successes of Operation Warp Speed, the public-private partnership to develop a vaccine. When distribution began, Trump had wanted to be directly involved in the vaccine’s promotion, gaming out a video campaign about the safety and success of his operation

When it comes to anti-vaxxers, they won’t, and it wouldn’t matter if Trump was president or anyone else. Honestly, I kinda don’t have a problem with this. Once the vaccine has wide distribution among the rest of us and the country fully reopens, then they can all get sick and I can feel less bad.

And when the Trump backers I know on FB start to whine about Biden, etc. I am going to beat them over the head with this stuff. It’s not both-siderism since the Democratic legislatures didn’t try this in 2016 with arguably narrower voter margins (plus winning the overall popular vote.)

So I have an order from Amazon to be delivered tomorrow [edit: TODAY] and I go check the status.

Yes, status says it was shipped.

But then I look at an earlier action:

11:15 PM
Package departed an Amazon facility Mira Loma, CA US

9:45 PM
Package arrived at an Amazon facility Itapevi, SP BR

Wait… what? How can a package be in Brazil at 9:45PM and then in Mira Loma at 11:15PM?

Even if the Brazilian location is in the equivalent of the US Eastern time zone, that only gets 4.5 hours of travel time, which seems too little for something to come from southern Brazil to California.

And what did I order that is coming from Brazil? My entire order is composed of (American branded and I thought US packaged) nutritional supplements that are usually stocked in most US Amazon warehouses.

These kinds of things make me question how long our high-tech highly-connected society can keep its collective shoes tied.

There was the 2000 election of course, but the controversy there was comparatively straightforward in regards to an exact count in one state, and both candidates behaved generously by any measure compared to the demagogic tantrums being waged by DJT.

Sir John Barron  Nov 18, 2020 • 6:11:58am

On the other hand, could I or anyone conclude based on the last four years that DJT was going to accept any election defeat, no matter the margin, and no matter when the race was “called”, either early on election night or days/weeks later?

Here is the fail:
“The league took all the precautions they needed to, “

Need to? No.
they took the precautions everyone rationalized down to what they figured would be enough

The real question is why are you gambling the risk to your kid’s life and health against a season of soccer?

Knowing this could happen
Is it just because you think it won’t happen to you?

Anyone can get it
Anyone can die from it
anyone can survive it

All the rationalization in the world does not change those three facts

Trump made it explicit back in 2017 that he wouldn’t consider any election valid if he didn’t win.

He’s a fucking fascist. The only election he and the GOP now consider valid are the ones they win. Everyone who votes against them is considered illegitimate.

It’s part of their long term strategy - which is to deny persons of color their rights, particularly to vote. By doing so, the GOP would deny Democrats’ their core voting bloc. That would wreck the Democrats and their national ambitions and allow the GOP to retain power indefinitely despite truly being a minority party that hasn’t won a national popular vote in years.

It seems clear that pulling our troops out of Afghanistan -> Taliban returning -> Al Qaeda reclaiming its safe haven -> more 9/11’s.

The issue is that as I look at things, 9/11 succeeded not because the were able to plot it so intricately but because we were somewhat asleep at the wheel/weren’t taking the proper precautions. I mean, it has been nearly 20 years since then and there hasn’t been a second terrorist attack on American soil close to the scale of 9/11, we’ve gotten better at defending ourselves against them.

That said there’s going to be a period of weakness as Biden takes over and Trump sulks, but at the same time the Taliban people have the same period of weakness to reestablish themselves after Trump pulls out and they need to retake over the country.

I’m not sure I can properly articulate how much the people of Afghanistan are likely to suffer though….

A new federal civil rights act with voting being a big part of it would be great. That people like Governor Abbott got away with things like establishing one dropoff location per county in a state like Texas is obscene. What’s kept a lot of this shit Constitutional according to the right wing jurists is it’s not done blatantly racially even though the writing is on the paper when you see things like closing down DMVs and cutting public transist in heavily minority counties when you begin to implement ID laws and such.

I’m flabbergasted at that. Mayo is one of the preeminent medical facilities in the nation, let alone the world, and they’ve got a personnel crunch because 900 members of the facility have covid?

It’s actually more than that once you factor in quarantines and related personnel:

The 900 staff newly diagnosed with COVID-19 equals over one-third of the 2,981 Mayo employees diagnosed since the start of the outbreak. When you add in staff who are quarantined or taken offline in order to care for relatives, the clinic is currently experiencing a stable shortage of 1,500 staff systemwide, 1,000 in Rochester.

If this is happening at the Mayo, you’re damn sure that it’s happening elsewhere that covid19 is ravaging out of control, or soon will be.

Hospitals will need to cancel all electives and go onto lockdown protocols to protect staff. That means no visitors and strict screening/testing for all staff and patients. It means nationwide.

Trump, meanwhile has checked out any providing no guidance or leadership. It’s up to the various states, and whether Minnesota enacts draconian rules or not will be undone because neighboring states refuse to do so.

Fuck the GOP. #GOPDontCare

Not to disagree that antisemitism plays a part, but there are other Jewish billionaires who support liberal causes (or at least one in Bloomberg). The thing that separates Soros is his work to democratize that you mentioned. It has made him the target of tyrants and their bootlickers around the world. The hate from Trumpers is a piece of that.

Right there with you. The approaching holiday season isn’t helping any. Primarily the rate at which infections are spiking right now is scaring the shit out of me…because I know there will be no stimulus or federal intervention until at least February and that’s still about three months away.

I just keep hoping the vaccines will be ready sooner rather than later so we can at least get our healthcare workers and first responders protected, then hopefully start putting a dent in this thing.

But remember, the medical experts from the beginning were telling us this would probably get worse before it got better.

So, asking for trump… Would he have won is he applied the 3/5 clause?

The city of Detroit voted overwhelmingly in favor of Joe Biden — 233,908 total votes for the Biden-Harris ticket compared to just 12,654 for the incumbent President Trump. Detroit’s election turnout was 49.56% — 250,138 total votes out of 504,714 registered voters.

Overall, Wayne County was a definitive vote for Biden — 68.12% of the vote. That’s 587,074 votes for the Democratic ticket in Wayne County.

Of course this is dark “humor”, but this is how a bunch of Republicans think.

Yeah that Goulash Putin (Orban) hates him is good. But yes it’s his support for liberal democracy in these places. I’ve been reading what’s happening in Poland in addition to Hungary with great disappointment. The new documentary Soros, directed by Jesse Dylan and available Nov. 20, examines the life of the Hungarian-born titan, from escaping the Nazis as a child to accumulating hedge fund riches and creating the grantmaking charity network Open Society Foundations. A reminder to all: the Pat Buchanan/Ron Paul wing of the GOP has a lot of influence. They believe firmly in isolationism: we need a military strong enough to deter any foreign attacks on our soil but we don’t care what happens elsewhere. They would have happily traded with Japan and Germany in the 1930’s and certainly would have had no interest in intervening to stop genocide or mass murder. Yeah Sure WhatEVs  Nov 18, 2020 • 8:43:14am

Months before the 2020 election, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger rejected repeated demands by the Trump campaign to endorse the president—and he now believes the attacks on his job performance this November are “clear retaliation,” according to ProPublica. According to the outlet, the Trump campaign began pressuring Raffensperger in January for his support, which he refused multiple times because he believed the endorsement would be a conflict of interest as he oversees the voting results in Georgia. The secretary of state said at the helm of this crusade for his public support was Billy Kirkland, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign who once barged into a meeting in Raffensperger’s office in the spring demanding his support for the president.

After another meeting, where Raffensperger again refused to endorse Trump and left for an event, one of the GA official’s staffers asked if there was any additional publicly available voter data that the Republican party needed. “We’ll see how helpful you are in November,” Kirkland allegedly said, before leaving the office in anger. “They thought Georgia was a layup shot Republican win. It is not the job of the secretary of state’s office to deliver a win—it is the sole responsibility of the Georgia Republican Party to get out the vote and get its voters to the polls. That is not the job of the secretary of state’s office,” said Raffensperger, who has since publicly expressed his frustration with the Trump administration’s accusations of voter fraud in his state.

Parler will be the lowest common denominator: People that believe literally anything. Flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, white nationalists, ancient aliens, religious cults - all running buckwild. May they fall prey to every bit of targeted false advertising, scam, and hustle out there. Super supplements, colloidal silver, heritage seeds, underground bunkers, moar gunz, books about what “they” don’t want you to know, investment scams - I hope they spend their savings on every bit of it, and pledge a monthly amount to a megachurch until they’re old, infirmed, and eating catfood.

Unfortunately they vote and this platform will incite them even further. 24/7 Fox on steroids. They will be deprived of alternative viewpoints. For all its toxicity, Facebook does accommodate all sides — truth and lies together. But Parler will not be hospitable to anyone who tries to bring light into darkness; it extinguishes any such light.

Interesting thing about Parler, it has a reverse 230 clause in its user agreement, if they wind up in legal trouble because of something you said on their system… you pay for it.

A few well placed lawsuits sucking the money from the pockets of Parler’s users would probably douse their enthusiasm.

Exactly. They’re the people who called FDR an agent of the Jews and called him “Franklin Delano Rosenfeld.” Likewise, both Buchanan and Paul were the favorites of those like David Duke and the white supremacists long before Trump was. I don’t like the Bush doctrine. Hell I even protested against it but I think the Trump Doctrine if you want to call it a doctrine is something far worse because of what it’s meant for Covid response and issues down the road.

I thought I remembered that about Harris but did not know that about Blackwell. Hell I had to look up our Secretary of State. It’s not a politically elected position here. FWIW voting has gotten much easier here as the Republicans have lost control in the legislature. I voted absentee by mail for the first time this fall. I had not in the past but I was familiar with how it was in the past since my grandmother her last few years decided to vote by absentee rather than going to the polls. It was difficult. We needed an excuse which was her advanced age.

They’re going there because it’s a batshit vacuum with no governor. No one can stop them, and there’s no way to roll it back. We as a society can’t stop that because if Parler fails, another will take it’s place. They’re going, whether we like it or not. Least they can do is suffer for their idiocy.

This is another reason believe it’s important to make the current administration legally accountable for lying, election tampering, and inciting violence. It sets an example of what society expects and what people are held accountable for.

There is no co-existence with these people. It’s like someone said about how one group wants to eat a zebra, but the zebra wants to live. The compromise (olive branch) is eat half a zebra. Zebra dies being half-eaten. Making nice with these people is not survivable.

The staggeringly unfortunate part is that I don’t see any way that we aren’t at 3k to 5k deaths per day by early December—and that’s if no healthcare systems in any major metro collapse. We haven’t seen the deaths start to materialize for when the daily case numbers exceeded 100k, 125k, 150k, etc. etc. And Thanksgiving will likely send cases soaring, as get togethers like a 10-15 person Thanksgiving dinner are what is driving case numbers right now. I would not be at all surprised if we passed 100k deaths in December alone.

Here’s a list of duties for the RI SOS:

Duties of the Secretary of State
The Secretary of State is the state’s third ranking elected official, following the Governor and Lt. Governor. State law gives the Secretary of State many different duties. As Rhode Island’s chief elections officer, the Secretary of State registers voters, prepares ballots, certifies election results and administers oaths of office. The Secretary of State also works with companies registered to do business in Rhode Island - more than 70,000 in all. State laws and other official acts, such as issuing bonds, must be signed by the Secretary of State in order to make them official. The Secretary of State is also charged with regulating lobbying activity in the Executive and Legislative branches of state government. In addition, the Secretary of State also processes, preserves and gives the public access to hundreds of thousands of historic documents and public records.

It may have been anxious minks or flatulent herrings later on, but on 1981-10-27, it was a real Soviet sub carrying nukes. So you get why the Swedish military gets a wee bit anxious when they get indications you have subs near vital installations. Like, the Hårsfjärden sub hunts were right next door to Muskö Naval Base, and the hunts in the most recent years were in a civilian area which would be in an invaders interest to attack in case of war. The latter turned out to be a pinger for some power generation/transmission gear, and the power company responsible has since been bitchslapped reminded by the Defence Forces re: proper protocol.

Yeah I worry about spreader Thanksgiving and Christmases. It’s all so bittersweet here since we really didn’t get to enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas last year either. My brother’s FiL died around that time and my grandmother got sick with the terminal pancreatic cancer that got her in January shortly after Thanksgiving. I hate it. We don’t know how effective an immunity it is or how long it lasts.

Idjit.

biorxiv.org

It’s a preprint and not peer-reviewed but basically from a sample of people who caught SARS-COV-2 early on there’s good evidence of significant numbers of B-type memory cells being present six months later.

The sort-of bad news is that there’s not enough people who have had the disease already to reduce the R value significantly so it’s going to continue to spread. People with B-cell and antibody “immunity” might still catch a second dose of the disease in a very mild form and be slightly infectious to those around them and hence keep the R value higher than we really want.

Infections and especially pandemics of novel diseases like COVID-19 are really statistical in nature. A vaccine induces an immune response with the added side-benefit that the vaccinated person isn’t shedding new viral particles compared to an infected person but that antibody immune response doesn’t guarantee perfect immunity. Vaccinating a million individuals DOES guarantee a much much smaller pool of seriously infected people which means the spread of the disease is vastly reduced. There will be some individuals who get the disease even after they get vaccinated though.

Subs have a regular habit of turning up where they’re not supposed to be and doing things that they’re not supposed to — the Jimmy Carter is purpose-built for just such a role.

HMS Conqueror, the only nuclear sub that has ever fired a warshot at a hostile vessel and sunk it (the Belgrano) had pages reportedly missing from its logbooks. This was taken as evidence of nefarious dealings during the Falklands War when in fact its next job after the war was over was to go into the Arctic region and deliberately snag an experimental towed sonar array from a Soviet Navy vessel in, ahem, “an unspecified location”. That almost certainly means USSR territorial waters.

Even Newsmax is throwing a hint of shade in this article:

Recounts in Wisconsin and across the country have historically resulted in very few vote changes. A 2016 presidential recount in Wisconsin netted Trump an additional 131 votes.

Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 23,000 votes that year and opposed the recount brought by Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

“The people have spoken and the election is over,” Trump said at the time. “We must accept this result and then look to the future.”

In Wisconsin, two pro-Trump groups along with a Wisconsin voter went to federal court to try and stop the 2016 recount, arguing in one filing that a Wisconsin recount that might “unjustifiably cast doubt upon the legitimacy of President-Elect Donald J. Trump’s victory.”

Milwaukee and Dane Counties are where Trump’s seeking a recount. That’s Madison and Milwaukee.

Perhaps the GOP doesn’t want any sort of investigation in the vote counts in the GOP-heavy counties of the state.

There was a lot of talk here before the election that if the vote trended blue in Georgia that the GOP would bend it somehow with Kemp (and presumably other GOP state officers) turning a blind eye.

It appears that at least some of them still have the integrity to take their office seriously and understand that they represent all the citizens and institutions of an entire state and not just their political party.

re: #351 A hollow voice says,1st round on points. Onward!

I’m thinking that troop movements take time and planning, especially ones as large as this. Surely the military will need more than two months to get started on this…

Trump will fire the JCOS and put Jared in charge of it so that it will be completed by Christmas.

Probably including abandoning all their equipment there to be sold at auction and charging the the soldiers travel back home to a recently established Trump Airlines that was given a no-bid contract.

re: #360 Hecuba’s daughter

Unfortunately they vote and this platform will incite them even further. 24/7 Fox on steroids. They will be deprived of alternative viewpoints. For all its toxicity, Facebook does accommodate all sides — truth and lies together. But Parler will not be hospitable to anyone who tries to bring light into darkness; it extinguishes any such light.

If Parler is smart they will set up a couple of bot accounts that can be programmed to be liberal scapegoats. Useful to keep the pot stirred.

Why chance any of this? Are sports so fucking important that you’d ruin your life for it? /rhetorical - the answer is apparently a resounding yes given all the people who play football knowing that it can leave you permanently harmed.

I agree with you, but it isn’t always so cut and dried. My daughter is a gymnast. By that I don’t mean she does gymnastics as a fun activity. I mean it’s her profession. She’s trained 20–40 per week for 13 years and competed all over the country. Last week she accepted a gymnastics scholarship to the University of California at Davis.

We’ve agonized over her going to the gym each day. They take precautions, with distancing, cleaning the apparatus, and gallons of hand sanitizer. Each day when she arrives home she strips and heads straight into the shower. Her clothes go straight into the washer.

I want to keep her safe, but we have to balance that against her career and education. The choices in this pandemic are not always easy.
