His emails to two of those constituents, one from North Platte and one from Omaha, earned him complaints to the Nebraska Ombudsman’s Office and the media.
Carol Gottsch of Omaha filed a complaint with the Ombudsman’s Office about the exchange she had with Groene after she sent him an email about his comments.
“What followed were three emails from Mr. Groene which were full of misinformation, as well as laced with condescending, name-calling remarks,” she told the Ombudsman’s Office.
He called her a socialist and described her as self-righteous, she said.
When she told him his information was not medically factual regarding COVID-19, he told her she was a know-it-all and suggested she keep her self-righteous opinions to herself.
“He called me a fanatic and stupid,” she complained.

The best part of a Zoom Viking Thanksgiving is you can take a break, drop out of the call and return with a fresh skull of mead at any time.
What really bums me out is my 65th birthday is on January 31st and I had planned to travel up and down the west coast on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight and top it off with a birthday dinner at the Seattle Space Needle.
First Amtrak had to cancel, train service reduced and overbooked.
Then The Space Needle restaurant is closed.
Then the backup plan was to dine at The Pacific Dining Car in Los Angeles (now closed)
Then I made reservations at Musso & Frank Grill (now cancelled)
Then I made reservation for a birthday dinner at Rao’s Hollywood (And that just closed due to COVID yesterday).
Guess I just get to sleep in on my birthday…

Omaha is on the eastern state line and Lincoln is about forty miles southwest of Omaha. The rest of the four hundred miles of Nebraska are “western” to people in the populated portion of the state.
That said, one of the writers at Seeing Red Nebraska now has twelve family members with Covid-19 as the governor’s genocide continues.
Twelve of my family members have had Covid-19 in the last 2 weeks, all out in western Nebraska, aged 3 to 89, North Platte and Stapleton to be exact.

What got me angry is first Amtrak removed the famous Parlor Car from the Coast Starlight. Next the Dining Car was removed and now you get a box meal. What I loved riding the long distance trains was having a good meal while traveling.

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected on Wednesday to clear Boeing’s 737 Max to fly again after grounding the jet for nearly two years due to a pair of crashes that killed 346 people.
Agency Administrator Steve Dickson said last week the FAA was in the final stages of reviewing changes to the Max that would make it safe to return to the skies.
“I will lift the grounding order only after our safety experts are satisfied that the aircraft meets certification standards,” he said in a statement.
The move would come after numerous congressional hearings on the crashes that led to criticism of the FAA for lax oversight and Boeing for rushing to implement a new software system that put profits over safety and ultimately led to the firing of its CEO.

Twitter is launching tweets that disappear in 24 hours called “Fleets” globally, echoing social media sites like Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram that already have disappearing posts.
The company says the ephemeral tweets, which it calls “fleets” because of their fleeting nature, are designed to allay the concerns of new users who might be turned off by the public and permanent nature of normal tweets.
Fleets can’t be retweeted and they won’t have “likes.” People can respond to them, but the replies show up as direct messages to the original tweeter, not as a public response, turning any back-and-forth into a private conversation instead of a public discussion.
Twitter tested the feature in Brazil, Italy, India, and South Korea, before rolling it out globally.

I love when you share Redding/Bethel stories. When working on a project there, Bethel really creeped me out. Not sure if you saw that former Redding councilman/mayor, creepy gunstore guy (who was on the transit board and HATED public transit) is now a Shasta County supervisor. They are craycray up there.
Ironically, the nicest peeps from my recollection were the folks at IASCO, the place where they basically train Chinese pilots. They were in the news awhile back about a kidnapping of a student or some such, but most of the articles I read at the time had no clue what the company was all about.

By statute those are the mayor, who shall be chairperson, a physician, who shall be medical adviser, the chief of police, who shall be secretary and quarantine officer, and two other members. The board then creates the rules and regulations.
Scottsbluff currently does not have a board of health.
The largest city in the Panhandle does not have a board of health. (The statute actually says licensed medical personnel, so an RN can be on the board of health.)
My village has a board of health. It consists of the Sidney VA nurse (who lives across the street from me), the chairwoman of the village board, the town marshal, and two members of the village.

Mostly the criteria were during slavery that a slave state had to be pared with a free state in order for both to be admitted to the Union to maintain the balance of power.
In the Civil War and Reconstruction, with Democrats out of the government, the GOP used their power to admit eight new states.
After Reconstruction was over, pairing off states has been based on party alignment, admitting a Republican-controlled and a Democratic-controlled state to maintain the balance of power.
There is no particular requirement to admit a state, however. The proposed state must submit a constitution representing a republican form of government which is approved. After that, simple majorities in both houses can admit the state. States may not be created out of existing states without approval of the state legislature and the proposed new state, nor may states be joined together without approval of both state legislatures.
Boundary disputes are settled by the Supreme Court (the Toledo Strip, Ellis Island, Carter Lake Iowa being examples).
The claim West Virginia is not a legally-constituted state arises from a Supreme Court case called Virginia v West Virginia in 1871, specifically the dissent (the case was decided 6-3). The Qnut congressman who claims West Virginia is not a state relies on the dissent in that case (though dissents do not hold the force of law).

There should be no talk of pardons, or of “going easy” on Trump and his goons, and certainly no talk about either should be done to “move on.” People are dead, our institutions have been undermined at every turn, our justice system turned into a mockery of itself, and an administration so sure it would face no consequences that the fucking Attorney General responded to the Speaker of the House about being held in contempt by snarkily asking her where the cuffs were.
My best suggestion to Biden is “let the chips fall where they may.” The DOJ should be free once again to act independently of the WH, rather than being used as a political arm of such. If they should find evidence that the Trump admin committed criminal acts, then they should be free to pursue whatever course of action they deem fitting. Same goes with Congress, the House and (if we take the majority) Senate should not have to worry about WH interference in their investigations. Again, let them follow the evidence and take the steps they feel necessary. The problem the last four years is not so much that all the above were investigating Trump’s “enemies,” it’s that they did so because he demanded them to do so.
Investigations were conducted in the wake of Watergate, and many laws were created or updated to address not only criminal acts by executive branch members by also to address corruption in the gov’t as a whole. We just spent the last 4 years watching many of those laws flouted, ignored, violated, and even stomped flat. If we don’t do something to fix all that, which requires investigations to determine what was done and how to prevent it in the future, then next go around we might find ourselves watching helplessly as somebody competent installs themself as “President for Life.”

I was just thinking of the Dakotas earlier today and maybe we need to set a minimum population for a state at 1-1.5 million people.
There was another organised territory which required a minimum number of free residents to become a state, the Territory South of the River Ohio (May 26, 1790 to June 1, 1796, when it was admitted as the State of Tennessee).
The Southwest Territory as it was more commonly known followed the Northwest Ordinance (with the exception of the ban on slavery), requiring a territorial legislature when the territory had 5,000 adult males, and permission to seek statehood when the population was 60,000 (excluding slaves).
As for putting in a minimum population, that would require a constitutional amendment, so start counting to thirteen states with a lower population than that and when you reach it, the amendment fails.

And what did I order that is coming from Brazil? My entire order is composed of (American branded and I thought US packaged) nutritional supplements that are usually stocked in most US Amazon warehouses.

What really bums me out is my 65th birthday is on January 31st and I had planned to travel up and down the west coast on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight and top it off with a birthday dinner at the Seattle Space Needle.
First Amtrak had to cancel, train service reduced and overbooked.
Then The Space Needle restaurant is closed.
Then the backup plan was to dine at The Pacific Dining Car in Los Angeles (now closed)
Then I made reservations at Musso & Frank Grill (now cancelled)

The issue is that as I look at things, 9/11 succeeded not because the were able to plot it so intricately but because we were somewhat asleep at the wheel/weren’t taking the proper precautions. I mean, it has been nearly 20 years since then and there hasn’t been a second terrorist attack on American soil close to the scale of 9/11, we’ve gotten better at defending ourselves against them.
That said there’s going to be a period of weakness as Biden takes over and Trump sulks, but at the same time the Taliban people have the same period of weakness to reestablish themselves after Trump pulls out and they need to retake over the country.
I’m not sure I can properly articulate how much the people of Afghanistan are likely to suffer though….

If this is happening at the Mayo, you’re damn sure that it’s happening elsewhere that covid19 is ravaging out of control, or soon will be.
Hospitals will need to cancel all electives and go onto lockdown protocols to protect staff. That means no visitors and strict screening/testing for all staff and patients. It means nationwide.
Trump, meanwhile has checked out any providing no guidance or leadership. It’s up to the various states, and whether Minnesota enacts draconian rules or not will be undone because neighboring states refuse to do so.

Right there with you. The approaching holiday season isn’t helping any. Primarily the rate at which infections are spiking right now is scaring the shit out of me…because I know there will be no stimulus or federal intervention until at least February and that’s still about three months away.
I just keep hoping the vaccines will be ready sooner rather than later so we can at least get our healthcare workers and first responders protected, then hopefully start putting a dent in this thing.
But remember, the medical experts from the beginning were telling us this would probably get worse before it got better.

I’ve been reading what’s happening in Poland in addition to Hungary with great disappointment. I thought I remembered that about Harris but did not know that about Blackwell. Hell I had to look up our Secretary of State. It’s not a politically elected position here. FWIW voting has gotten much easier here as the Republicans have lost control in the legislature. I voted absentee by mail for the first time this fall. I had not in the past but I was familiar with how it was in the past since my grandmother her last few years decided to vote by absentee rather than going to the polls. It was difficult. We needed an excuse which was her advanced age.

Outside of responsibility for counting the votes, what other responsibilities do state secretary of states have? The position is totally different than the federal position with the same name in contrast to the state AGs who are just state versions of the AG of the entire country.

So you get why the Swedish military gets a wee bit anxious when they get indications you have subs near vital installations. Like, the Hårsfjärden sub hunts were right next door to Muskö Naval Base, and the hunts in the most recent years were in a civilian area which would be in an invaders interest to attack in case of war. The latter turned out to be a pinger for some power generation/transmission gear, and the power company responsible has since been bitchslapped reminded by the Defence Forces re: proper protocol.

Yeah I worry about spreader Thanksgiving and Christmases. It’s all so bittersweet here since we really didn’t get to enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas last year either. My brother’s FiL died around that time and my grandmother got sick with the terminal pancreatic cancer that got her in January shortly after Thanksgiving. I hate it. But I want to live for tomorrow and if that means I can’t go to bars, shows, etc like I used to, so be it, I can wait but it’s gonna be tough seeing those numbers go up knowing what could have been done to mitigate them.

Germany is trying a “lockdown light” - closed bars and restaurants (except takeaway) and public events but left shops open and otherwise no restrictions on being out and about (travel is difficult as hotels are closed) in hopes of getting numbers down enough to allow a fairly “normal” Christmas/Holiday season but it is not showing much of an effect

It’s a preprint and not peer-reviewed but basically from a sample of people who caught SARS-COV-2 early on there’s good evidence of significant numbers of B-type memory cells being present six months later.
The sort-of bad news is that there’s not enough people who have had the disease already to reduce the R value significantly so it’s going to continue to spread. People with B-cell and antibody “immunity” might still catch a second dose of the disease in a very mild form and be slightly infectious to those around them and hence keep the R value higher than we really want.
Infections and especially pandemics of novel diseases like COVID-19 are really statistical in nature. A vaccine induces an immune response with the added side-benefit that the vaccinated person isn’t shedding new viral particles compared to an infected person but that antibody immune response doesn’t guarantee perfect immunity. Vaccinating a million individuals DOES guarantee a much much smaller pool of seriously infected people which means the spread of the disease is vastly reduced. There will be some individuals who get the disease even after they get vaccinated though.

There was a lot of talk here before the election that if the vote trended blue in Georgia that the GOP would bend it somehow with Kemp (and presumably other GOP state officers) turning a blind eye.

I agree with you, but it isn’t always so cut and dried. My daughter is a gymnast. By that I don’t mean she does gymnastics as a fun activity. I mean it’s her profession. She’s trained 20–40 per week for 13 years and competed all over the country. Last week she accepted a gymnastics scholarship to the University of California at Davis.
We’ve agonized over her going to the gym each day. They take precautions, with distancing, cleaning the apparatus, and gallons of hand sanitizer. Each day when she arrives home she strips and heads straight into the shower. Her clothes go straight into the washer.
