Trump taking away the Fox News audience with a pied piper act after his loss in this election will be an even greater dose of karma for the GOP establishment than Trump doing that to the whole GOP base in 2016.

I just hope the country can survive the resulting political convulsions.

We haven’t talked to our brother since the election but are going to see if he’s available tomorrow. Will be interesting — he was so confident that Trump would win re-election in a landslide, because who would want to vote for senile Sleepy Joe, who is the most corrupt candidate for President and is so definitely owned by China!! Waiting to see if he’s switched to OAN, given Fox calling the election for Biden.

I already had my “Repub family member-inspired headache” this week from my own dad. There was a family discussion on Monday after a grocery run about people beginning to panic buy again due to rising infection rates and restored restrictions. He almost immediately snarked that people “wanted to live in a socialist country,” as though that had anything to do with TP shortages. I immediately had to point out that this shit happened before the election, but didn’t go any farther as I just didn’t want an argument and he tends to lock down if too many of his assumptions are challenged at once.

Today these asshats (one from Auburn, Nebr. and the other from Maryland) are off to the federal pen.

The drug sales were discovered by the FBI when they saw large transfers of Bitcoin to the pharmacist in Auburn.

I’m going to head off to bed.

We’re still left with no response to Covid-19 coming down the pike. State Senator Matt Hansen put up a three-tweet thread to explain to constituents what the problem is, and why the governor is calling all the shots.

Unless Gov. Ricketts calls a special session of the Unicameral, they cannot meet again until next year. Nebraska law is pretty strict on multiple people in government even being in the same place due to the state Sunshine Law being so strict.

It was an issue when I was on my village board: Three people in the same place in theory constituted a quorum of the board, and if it wasn’t announced then it was illegal.

In practice of course three people can be anywhere they want, including the same market or bar. But if someone got a burr up their butt they would make a complaint to the state there was an illegal meeting, everyone involved had to explain there was no meeting and no one was discussing government business, &c.

The same applies to the Unicameral, so they can’t even have the appearance of meetings.

Casper, Wyo. Star-Tribune

Natrona County face mask order now in effect

Natrona County’s mask order is now in effect.

“The reason to do this is simple,” Natrona County Health Officer Dr. Mark Dowell said Thursday during a virtual press conference. “We want to keep this county and its citizens healthy. We want to keep the businesses open and we want to keep the schools open.”

Dowell said he signed the order late Wednesday.

COVID-19 has become a medical emergency in Natrona County and around the state, Dowell said, and officials expect things to get worse based on current trends.

“We don’t want this to get worse,” he said. “We don’t want to make this so hard on medical providers that they can’t take care of you.”

The order runs through Dec. 4, but could be extended longer.

The order mirrors those passed or being considered in half of Wyoming’s 23 counties, and requires face coverings inside all retail or commercial businesses or any government facility that is open to the public, according to a copy of the order released Wednesday. It will also require masks in health care facilities and on public transportation.

and

More than 11,000 virus cases were active in Wyoming as of Thursday when including probable cases. Hospitalizations have topped 200, and deaths have doubled in the last month, with 89 of the state’s 176 COVID-19 deaths announced in November.

Health officials, including Dowell, have called on Gov. Mark Gordon to enact a statewide mask order. In a Nov. 12 letter, 21 county health officers asked Gordon to institute the measure, rather than deferring to local officials to pass their own, jurisdictional decrees, because “a statewide mandate sends a more powerful and effective message in a more timely manner.”

The governor has yet to act on that request, but has said he is considering it.

This isn’t about liberals.

Singer and songwriter Sia spent a lot of time making a film about her friend who has autism.

She refused to audition actors who have autism for the role. When several people and organisations called her out on this, she attacked them instead.

People from other disability communities then joined in, and all are trying to point out that anyone with a disability tends to be portrayed poorly in film, or are used as spectacals for the able-bodied.

Sia stans are also involved in the discussion, also attacking those with autism in defence of their particular celebrity (this seems to be a common occurrence to defend them even when they do crappy things then double down when called out on it). It would not surprise you to know that it is able-bodied and neurotypical people defending Sia against the mean disabled people.

Well, there’s the issue of “Hamilton” and its actors.

That said, the caricatures of disabled persons in film are legendary, whether autism, or epilepsy, or mental illness, &c.

Those stereotypes sell films though, and Hollywood production companies are in the business of making money, not being education outfits. Playing to stereotypes and bigotry makes big bucks.

There’s critique and constructive pointing out of faults (which I don’t deny also happened); and then there’s simply dismissing an apparently well-intentioned film as a “kick in the bloody teeth”, tearing it down and then the star in question responding in an equally immature manner.

Seems like my description.

Pretty much.

It took a very long time before (most of) society found blackface to be unacceptable. It will take a long time before disabled actors are acceptable and disabled people are not portrayed poorly as well.

I’m more sensitive to poor portrayals of people with epilepsy for purely personal reasons, however, seeing poor portrayals of other disabled communities grinds my gears as well.

There’s a whole list of bad portrayals of epilepsy in film and television and why they are bad

FOX News Channel has picked up on the backlash against Sia.

Sia addresses backlash to new film’s portrayal of autism: ‘I believe this movie is beautiful’ (nine hours ago)

Sia is addressing the backlash she’s received after casting former “Dance Moms” star Maddie Ziegler as a character with autism in her new movie “Music” even though the 18-year-old is not autistic in real-life.

After Sia tweeted out the trailer for the upcoming movie on Thursday, which she directed and co-wrote, a Twitter user responded: “It’s a mighty shame that someone with such a colossal platform is using it to exclude disabled and neuro diverse actors from their own narratives. I’ve been a long time fan of your work, so this is really disappointing.”

The tweet caught the attention of the 44-year-old singer who hit back, stating that it’s “f—king sad nobody’s even” seen the movie and that her “heart has always been in the right place.”

Yeah, it could’ve been interesting to see how Werich would’ve played the role. He’s a rather normal-looking gent and the best supervillains don’t need to be disfigured or look vaguely monstrously….I’d say the more they look like your everyday Joe, the more memorable they could be. Although her neighbours in Fernwood primarily know her as a somewhat clueless homemaker who most often worries about waxy yellow buildup on her floors, they don’t know Mary Hartman’s secret.

She’s built from scratch a supercomputer system to take over the US nuclear force, using the knowledge she gained from Cleveland Institute of Electronics distance learning courses, with the aid of the Pickett slide ruler which comes with their course materials.

She is foiled when Mr. Clean discovers that the waxy yellow buildup on her floor is actually the electric generator for her supercomputer. By swapping out the liquid in her Future floor wax bottle with Mr. Clean, Mary Hartman destroys her own power supply the next time she waxes her kitchen floor.

The problem is not acting.

Aside from Sia’s dismissive tweet “maybe you’re a bad actor,” the claim she made “there wasn’t time to cast autistic actors because I don’t have time to work with them,” and working with Autism Speaks for their take on how an autistic person should be portrayed, there are studies which show when disabled people are not included in media about disabled people, it damages people’s opinions of disabled people.

People with autism are consistently portrayed badly in film and television precisely because producers make more money portraying them in a fashion which promotes bigotry.

Should only pregnant women portray women who are pregnant is not equivalent, though it is common even today to sideline actresses when they become pregnant, and not for health reasons.

Skipping from autism into more familiar territory, I have never seen, not once, epilepsy portrayed accurately in any visual media. Films and television are big on misrepresenting how seizures actually appear for shock value, continue to promote demonic possession as the source of seizures, portray people with epilepsy as non-functional members of society, &c.

It’s not even because Sia cast someone in this role while openly discriminating against people with autism from applying for it; it’s the dismissive way in which she’s taking criticism from people with autism and other disabilities.

She has plenty of ableist stans though, including FOX News.

58
Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Nov 21, 2020 • 4:01:00am

Skipping away from epilepsy into another area I’m familiar with and how media consistently portrays the group poorly

How often is a homeless person portrayed other than a raggedy-ass old guy, usually drunk, mostly unwashed, probably mentally ill, &c.

How often does media portray rural people as “dumb hicks” (for that matter how often do liberals do it) who are uneducated, slovenly, &c?

These portrayals matter to those who are part of those communities. The argument appears to be “well, blackface, that’s obviously bad” (and by the way, Sia has also appeared in blackface and her fans defend that too), but telling someone with autism she never met who criticised her “well maybe you can’t act” is acceptable? When scores of people with autism or other disabilities criticise her responses, she doubles down? Gets a write-up in FOX (poor wealthy singer/songwriter/actress is being beat up by the disabled community)?

Far more important than the actors in cases like this is the quality of the writing and what you or others consider to be acceptable compromises in the accuracy for the sake of drama.

Everyone here has areas of expertise where watching movies or (usually worse) TV will drive you straight up a wall. Scripts that get having to reload after the right number of shots are still rare and even rarer are those that get the physical actions correct. I won’t even mention the numerous farces that computers face from the technical illiterates writing about, say, hacking.

Very few would be able to write about a character with autism or epilepsy accurately and still provide a real dramatic context for their issues. Most writers have never met a homeless person such as the woman I met in Westwood LA living out of a grocery cart and who was quite content to not be part of the rat race the students in the bars were living.

Sturgeon’s Law says “90% of Science Fiction is crap because 90% of all writing is crap”. That’s the context here; for every great screenplay there are hundreds cranked out to meet a deadline and never checked for any kind of accuracy, just “can this be filmed on time and under budget”?

The best actors, even those with the issue at hand, can’t do squat with a bad script.

Reminded me how disappointed my father was with the television sitcoms in the early 70s. He grew up in small northern prairie town and could relate to the rural southern comedies like Mayberry, Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbilllies, Green Acres, Hee Haw. They all got cancelled in 1971 in the network rural purge. He didn’t like or understand the big city characters of Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart. Morning, all.

For those of us keeping score at home, I’ve seen a bunch of notes on the ‘Net re the
Presidential popular vote: with the latest batch of reports, the Biden/Harris ticket has (finally) increased its winning margin to (just) over 6 million (51.1%), and is closing in on an 80 million total figure (just under as of now).

These figures aren’t precise: no two sources seem to give the same numbers, but these will do quite nicely.

I guess we owe Hugo Chavez a hearty muchas gracias…,

In 1992, Michelle Schocked, before she really went off the deep end, did an album, The Arkansas Traveller, a reworked collection of old-timey tunes dedicated to the Minstrel tradition of the South and their contribution to the American musical tradition.

In the liner notes, she said that she had considered appearing in blackface on the album cover but knew that she would face a shitstorm of controversy that would only detract from the point she was trying to make.

I dunno, but anecdotally it sure looks like the GOP is still split between more-or-less institutionalists who think Trump is, er, not great, but he’s the GOP guy so we vote for him; and the Trumpenproletariat who don’t give a shit about the GOP and are in it for the fascism.

So, if Trump had conceded, grudgingly, or said he wasn’t going to contest it, the GOP would have an easier time of GA right now. They could sell Loeffler and Purdue as a necessary check on the Biden administration. Instead, the yam goes nuts, demands all the state GOP officials do blatantly illegal shit which have a passing chance of getting them hung from lampposts, and the state goobers balk. So now they’re the enemies too, and any other goobers who won’t bend the knee.

So Loeffler and Purdue have to pick a side, more or less. From what I’ve heard, they’ve decided to go full Trump, which has two problems: they’re scaring the institutionalists who split their tickets in the general, and a good number of the MAGAts won’t vote for them anyways because FOX News is bad now Dominion mail-in vote fraud bananapants.

Plus, screaming that the elections are fixed doesn’t make people get off their butts to get to the polls, especially when still telling them that mail-in ballots are The Debbil.

It’s not like the Dems have this in the bag by any means, but Trump is doing his best to fuck things up, like he always does.

Until votes are certified on Monday/Tuesday, we don’t know what those Michigan Republicans are going to do. They are Republicans — one cannot believe any statements they make. We don’t know what threats or promises that Trump subjected them to. We don’t know who is behind the efforts to undermine our electoral system. Trump may be getting his marching orders directly from Putin or perhaps Barr is orchestrating this behind the scenes. Too many Trumpsters seem confident that this is going to end up in Congress.

We are facing an unprecedented attack on our country — a coup that will rip our nation apart unless it’s stopped now. And it cannot be stopped without the Senate Republicans acknowledging that Biden won and telling Trump that he cannot continue this game.

Trump’s life experiences have been that he can lie and bully his way out of everything. The entire Republican Party in Washington has been subservient to his demands, with only a few rare dissents. Biden’s team must be more aggressive in asserting the truth, instead of letting the Trump lies continue to propagate. Or maybe their measured tone is exactly the right approach at this time and that by Tuesday the Trump attack will have proved itself to be a total failure? Hoping that is true.

This is how we get coastal liberals of reproductive age to move from high cost of living cities, if they can mostly work from home, to sparsely populated states where 5 acres with a creek costs less than their NY or SF 500 sq ft studio.

Put enough of those liberals in a small town, it’s going to need schoolteachers, a coffee shop, a diner and an ethnic restaurant, a community theater/concert venue, etc. Suddenly, the red state turns purple.

Until sufficient states certify the votes to get Biden to at least 270, we cannot be certain that the coup d’etat will fail as it so deserves to. The entire Republican Party is complicit in sedition; it’s not just Trump.

Mr. C. is rather fond of crunchy squid threads but of course they have soy sauce in them, so we have to make them at home with Tamari (he’s celiac.) Fortunately there’s a Korean grocery that sells the appropriate fine cut squid threads. It also lets me crisp them up a bit more than the commercially packaged ones, since “squid” and “crisp” aren’t really a natural match.

We use Tamari too. My wife isn’t celiac but gluten does cause terrible rashes for her. Given the choice, I’d go for octopus, though.

Republican voters love Trump: his racism, his graft, his bullying, his corruption, his treason to the United States. Republicans in Florida love Rick Scott, a criminal who stole hundreds of millions from the federal government before he got caught. The more outrageous the behavior, the more it endears a candidate to the Republican base — except if the behavior involves helping the poor or minorities or the environment. This will only help Perdue and Loeffler.

Oh, God yes, did Baldwin kill it as Ryan - but if you look at all of the actors in that movie, you couldn’t have asked for such a great ensemble cast: Sean Connery, Neill, Fred Thompson, Tim Curry, Courtney Vance, Scott Glenn, Richard Jordon, Stellan Skarsgård, etc.

I bought that on LaserDisc when it came out.

And if any of you lizards out there have never seen it - watch it - it’s that good.

….Trump has made it extremely clear that he does not give a single solitary shit about Americans getting sick and dying by the thousands. He doesn’t even pretend any more….

Trump never cared. From the beginning of the pandemic, he was focused only on the economy and not the lives that would be lost to this disease (or, as it turned out, those who would be sickened for months and perhaps suffer permanent damage). Most of the GOP base shares his perspective.

To be more accurate — Trump never cared about the well-being of anyone other than himself anyway. His cavalier attitude about hurricanes and wildfire demonstrated that repeatedly.
