James Taylor Beautifully Reworks a Classic: “Over the Rainbow”

Music • Views: 25,840

YouTube

“Over the Rainbow” was recorded during the sessions for James Taylor’s 2020 album, “American Standard,” but the song never made it onto the album. This is a previously unreleased, moving interpretation of The Wizard of Oz classic, “Over The Rainbow,” written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg.

Stream/download here: https://found.ee/JTOTRamericanstandardEP

FROM JAMES:
“I’m so glad these three songs are getting a general release. We cut more songs than would fit on the album, American Standard, which made the promotional department happy. They find uses for the extra tracks, usually as ‘exclusive’ material for the big box retailers. But I’ve regretted not giving these three pieces the exposure I think they deserve.

My solo guitar version of ‘Over the Rainbow’ has two points worth mentioning: first it keeps Yip Harburg’s original introductory verse, which is rare, though the song is forever popular. And second: its arrangement has more variations than any other “Rainbow” I’ve heard - it’s one chordy chart.”

LYRICS
When all the world seems a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around
Heaven opens a magic lane

And when the clouds darken up the skyway
There’s a rainbow highway to be found
Leading from your window pane
To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There’s a land that I learned of once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really can come true

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Way up above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over that rainbow
Why then oh why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why oh why can’t I?

The only thing that may — and that’s not a very confident may — sever the relationship between Trump and his base is the revelation that Trump has a negative net worth and that his apparent wealth is illusory, based on deceptions and outright lies in all his financial records. So many voted for him because they wanted a “successful” businessman and non-politician as President; if that image is stripped away, some may abandon him but others would probably admire him even more because of his ability to present and maintain an image that captures the public (certain public anyway) admiration. For now he remains a cult leader and can do no wrong in his followers’ eyes.

He has a backup excuse to cover that: namely that he had to neglect his businesses because he was too busy fighting to MAGA that his business fortunes languished for lack of care.

Cl’ed….
One of the big problems a Biden administration is going to face is that Trump did actually deliver on his tax cut (even though it will start to climb back to Obama level rates in the next few years for the peons, while the business cut is permanent) and the $600/wk unemployment benefit when COVID was just starting out.

But the fact that he isn’t lifting a finger to help people when the end of the year comes with foreclosures and evictions reach levels not even seen during the Depression won’t paint him in a good light - you would think he’d be de-shelling the turtle to get some form of relief passed before he’s unceremoniously thrown out the door of the White House - then again, the only thing the turtle cares about is putting unqualified judges to lifetime positions on the US Court system.

Since Trump has laid the foundation for appointing temporary appointees, the second that the turtle blocks any of Biden’s nominees should be a bat signal to just totally bypass the Senate and appoint all of his cabinet positions as acting Cabinet heads - after all, what’s sauce for the goose…..

Which implies that his spawn are incapable of running the Trump Organization, which he stated he turned his control over to after the election.

The spin will be that the Elite Establishment hated him so much that they declared war on his business interests and derailed them out of sheer malice and spite, and even his brilliant and talented kids could not deal with that level of malicious cunning.

Unfortunately, that is ineffective if you are trying to build an administration that wants to govern. The appointees will not have the time to get the necessary experience and knowledge before they are unceremoniously tossed out. We are permanently weakened by McConnell’s presence in the Senate — indeed by the Republicans holding the majority.

Which excuse is pretty flimsy, considering that a large (major?) part of the legal problems ex-President Trump will have to deal with stem from outstanding issues dating from well before he became President. And that his “business fortunes” haven’t particularly suffered during his tenure: thanks to the (nominally illegal) government custom he’s grifter, probably the opposite.

Not that will matter shit to the MAGA-cultists, I’m sure: like so many other delusions, they’ve completely swallowed the reality-TV image of Donald Trump The Fabulously Successful Tycoon: and will likely never let it go.

You might have a chance with a few if you can prove that his wealth was illusory for the past 20 years. But I recall posting that Trump was not a billionaire and a RW friend reacted by saying that he didn’t care because Trump did not become wealthy by abusing his position as a public servant — like all those Democrats who became rich while holding office.

And the Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) dig is a perfect fit for this.

Trump Organization properties track along this line to eerily: the difference is that Theranos was playing in valuations that even the Trump Organization could only dream of, and Theranos had a board of directors of individuals who wouldn’t be caught dead with Trump.

A warehouse near my home was turned into a hydroponics farm for salad vegetables and tilapia fish. It was the second factory that they’d opened in St. Paul and everyone was really excited about what a wonderful addition it was to our neighborhood. After less than two years here they suddenly closed when the parent company that they’d sold themselves to decided that it didn’t fit their business model any more.

Singapore has been run by very competent, well-educated, intelligent authoritarians (not fascists). So that model can be successful and provide a good lifestyle to the population, without leaders being outright racists and bullies. But our population would not take kindly to being run by an intellectual elite — because much of the population has a contempt for education and experts.

It was advertised as a clean closed system where the fish poop would fertilize the plants. I don’t know much more about the details of their waste products.

It does seem that Michigan Republicans are planning to vote for an alternative set of electors to instigate a constitutional crisis. Pennsylvania could go along with that too. So 2 slates of electors from each state. The GOP is ready to bring this nation down. This isn’t 1876 when they got away with these shenanigans. Only McConnell can stop this — and he isn’t. Two writers from WaPo on moving forward with an eye on disinformation and the RNC.

When the 2024 contenders come around, remember this, Jennifer Rubin, letting the ambitious senators have it.

Let’s say Trump does not run again. When Republican candidates such as Sens. Josh Hawley (Mo.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Ted Cruz (Tex.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.) come around looking for support, the country should dismiss them out of hand. They repeatedly failed basic tests of citizenship — let alone leadership — forfeiting their moral authority to serve in any government position.

The disinformation system that Trump unleashed will outlast him. Here’s what reality-based journalists must do about it, Margaret Sullivan.

Social media platforms, streaming “news” channels and innumerable websites will spew lies and conspiracy theories, and will keep weakening the foundation of reality that America’s democracy needs in order to function.
So what, if anything, can the reality-based press do to counter it?
I see three necessities.

re: #61 The Pie Overlord!

The MI Legislature does not have the authority to appoint alternate electors.

Even if they did, the resolution would have to be signed by the Governor who is probably not about to do that, and even if she lost her mind and did, the safe harbor electors awarded through the process established by the legislature and certified by the legal deadline (the Biden ones) would take automatic precedence in the joint session of Congress. I think this gets explained here on a daily basis but it’s always back to square one by the next day.

Trump has proved that he could get away with violating every norm — and this ideology has permeated the entire party.

I’m gonna send in my own slate of electors for michigan

Taking a wild guess here… but Allison shooting herself in what looks like minimal clothing, on a bed, in a tight shot of her, in a small poorly lit bedroom… some AI thinks it looks like a sex-slave or sex-worker video.

If Youtube had originally flagged it then Allison would have to be the one to get it changed.

But AdSense may not care about anything but the still shot that accompanies the image.

The Constitution says explicitly that the legislature selects the electors period. There are state laws that restrict that authority. But it doesn’t mean that originalist judges, like Aunt Lydia, won’t stick with the explicit language of the Constitution.

What it says is:

Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

And the states have laws, written by legislators, that direct how they are picked.

The Constitution says explicitly that the legislature selects the electors period. There are state laws that restrict that authority. But it doesn’t mean that originalist judges, like Aunt Lydia, won’t stick with the explicit language of the Constitution.

And the legislatures did: they passed laws in every state to establish voting and certification in detail. These were the standards established for Election Day 2020.

Again, you can say that there’s nothing stopping Aunt Lydia and four other conservative judges from sua sponte deciding that Trump is King of America if you apply these standards.

You are playing Trump’s game. He bullshits and bullies and scares people. Everything that has actual importance in this election has happened per established law and processes: the votes were counted, the mail-in votes were counted, the counties were certified. It only gets harder for Trump every day.

The takeaway is that older immigrants can be eager to express racist attitudes (usually towards blacks at the bottom of the US totem pole) in an attempt to place themselves at an automatically higher social rank.

The younger generation of recent immigrants usually trend more liberal and tolerant but not always. This fits with historical immigration attitudes and as the older generations die off the generally the more liberal these demos become. The entitled supremacist beliefs of most white youth are trending down, although at a much too slow rate. Once immigrant children start hitting the career and social glass ceilings of entrenched racism here in America, they tend to start voting more Democratic.

The RWNJs are planning to massacre “rioters.” They have been quite open about it for 50 years. They think it is their ace-in-the-hole, and there will be a lot of them thanks to the bandwagon effect so often observed among weak people who would like to be strong.

What they don’t realize, can’t conceive in fact, is that such an action will bring into play forces that have never before involved themselves in street politics; people with advanced science degrees and vast material and intellectual resources, foreign intelligence and other agencies, civil service patriots with access to sensitive information.
I will not speculate about what they will do, but I will say that guns and explosives are not a big part of it, except that guns may be necessary for self defense. Guns and bombs are old school, Algiers ‘62 and Belfast ‘73 stuff. We need something new and original. The 21st century conveniently provides many possibilities, if enough imagination and skill are applied.
