As I have said before, as a liberal I would be enraged and completely owned if MAGA voters in Georgia boycotted the runoffs. Completely, completely owned.

We don’t know who bought their election.. I’m sure it crosses party lines.. I’m reasonably certain John James was ripped out of his seat, and he was entitled to have won that election by the real vote, and the same thing is true for Doug Collins in Georgia.” — @SidneyPowell1

He was entitled was he?

That’s now how this shit works.

And by all means, boycott the vote!

Charles, are you familiar with Robert Fripp’s ‘New Standard’ tuning? Kinda weird. It’s a guitar basically tuned like a mandolin.

What’s the Deal With New Standard Tuning?

I’ve toyed with the idea of stringing a guitar up like that and seeing where it goes.

From the previous thread regarding the BCG tuberculosis vaccine:

re: #116 Belafon

What if you’ve already had tuberculosis and it’s now latent? Would that create the same response? Do I have the same protections?

And if so, who knew that surviving a fatal disease can protect you from a different fatal disease. Disease meta.

Talked to my sister today who lives in ND. Seems like at least 20% of the people she and I know there have tested positive (and, thankfully, recovered). Direct ties to Sturgis and a bunch of weddings this summer but less than half of those infected were actual attendees.

Yep. All the communists that have been elected and have billion dollar media operations and four decades of cultural cachet.

The middle is absolutely not responsible for continuously accommodating rightward political movements, or pretending that it’s “normal” political functioning for one party to continuously threaten the rapid destruction of the national safety net if their demands for piece-by-piece destruction of the safety net are not met…and get a lot of what they want.

Young people radicalizing left don’t have any fucking point when they feel betrayed as their lives get worse and more desperate, and there was absolutely no reason that more radical forms of leftism are suddenly present in our system.

Nobody with power fucked up over and over.

What if the Trump team intentionally only showed small evidence to the small courts?

What if the Trump team did this to get to the Supreme Court sooner?

What if the Trump team releases the big evidence to the big courts?

What if Trump is actually playing chess?

What if you can’t introduce new evidence at the appellate level?

What if there is no *evidence* to introduce? At ANY level?

So far the Trump campaign’s whole legal “strategy” seems to be merely an accelerated version of the usual Trump practice: i.e., “lawyer up and sue and appeal up through the court system until everyone gets sick and tired of dealing with you and settles”

Which probably ain’t gonna work on the Presidential-election level…

I really honestly think Trump’s expecting one of his flunkies on SCOTUS to step in and go, “Okay, we’ll hear the case. Don’t sweat not having evidence now, you can do that later if you want.”

Look, these people think of their mere assertion of fraud as “evidence” and are genuinely furious that they are not being complied with, but also feel defensive of their mere assertion such that they will in bad faith concoct, or accept, and present things that are vaguely-evidence-shaped in the hopes that they will perform “evidence” to a level sufficient that it will convince someone with power make it “true.”

It’s dialectical—both/and—not dichtomous—either/or—because they’re fundamentally uninterested in the deeper meaning of law, argument before a court, etc. as processes in which good faith and agreement about rules of engagement are paramount. All these things zero-sum power transactions, and as such all methods are permissible…but only for them. Each thing done or claimed is a form of rhetoric, but what all have in common is their bad faith approach: the process does not matter if it reaches the “correct” (right and moral) conclusion that they get what they want.

What defines Trumpism is this bad faith approach to reality, and what makes Trump the Trump of Trumpism is that he authentically operates with this logic at all times. It’s not a game he plays when it’s advantageous, only to slip back into normal rhetoric and playing to “technically, I can do this”…and the base likes that.

re: #95 The Ghost of a Flea

Mind you, bad faith readings are built into conservatism because conservatism is ultimately the justification of hierarchy, and thus both law and mores are inherently contextualized by position. And bad faith readings extend not just to law and governance, but to sexual mores, ethics of use of force, and general personal conduct. The stated positions of conservatism suggest a belief in the hard rule, but in practice the in-group are permitted forgiveness, and their misdeeds are rendered understandable (and thus mitigated) through context and nuance.

Donald Trump just makes this explicit, formally declaring the horizontal and vertical lines of the US caste system, letting his audience know they are the center that will be protected but not bound. The center are allowed to be full people, all of the distal groups must suffer the center because they are not full people and it is wrong to treat them as full people. This is why MAGA types get so confused and enraged when they receive consequences. This is why they burst into tears and feel persecuted when they get arrested, this is why they call criticism and mockery “censorship.”

How many issues have we seen recently where the language conservatives deploy can be reduced down to “it is normal to abuse power, power inherently grants license”?

How many conservative grievances reduce to “systematic accountability is a threat because the in group is not bound by its own rules”?

This is why Trumpism isn’t going to die. It’s building on an existing cultural framework, but has created a more honest and cathartic expression of core values. More savvy conservatives who have previously only played with these concepts by implication and coded language are going to be seen as inauthentic or uncommitted…and the few sincere believers that want their base to adhere to the rules they “believe” for will be seen as hypocrites and persecutors.

While Trump is not playing chess or doing anything smart, what’s happening is a tactic.

The gamble is that the more shit that’s flung about the more his base will become angry, and conservatives that are dependent on that base will become frightened and consider playing along…at which point the rhetoric will further escalate to try and get them fully compliant.

He’s dumb and mean, and he’s once again doing something that’s pretty much a shitty domestic abuser tactic on a grand scale: create chaos and fear so that other people not only have to fix the problem, but fix the problem the way he wants.

Which…again…is an authentic expression of something his party and his base do all the time. How many rounds of “give us what we want, or we will hurt you” have we gone through at this point?

100% agreed. It’s no slight on Sanders or Warren if they don’t get Labor or Treasury. Being a Senator is totally different than being an administrator. And you’re right. Plenty of talented candidates to consider.

I think we’ll see more career public servants in Biden’s cabinet versus Obama’s since we’re four rather than eight years removed from the WH. Obama and especially Bill Clinton had a lot more difficult work to do constructing a cabinet since the Dems had been out of the WH so long and Clinton/Obama were less experienced than Biden will be in Washington.

Like, this is a laughably bad coup attempt…but it is effectively demonstrating how much of the political apparatus of one party is captured by the lunatics and the one guy who’s got the lunatics on point.

It also has to be looked at relative to the attempts at court stacking: this farce of attorneys is not separable from the farce of unqualified judges.

And the last thing is…corresponding to the court stacking, this is a test of the viability of venue shopping…just keep filing and trying to find someone who agrees…mated with the barely-masked assumption that the existing Supreme Court will take the case and find in Trump’s favor.

That last part is unlikely…but it’s important because it tells you who we’re dealing with and what they view as normal practice…which is that it is right and good that the law is secondary to partisan loyalty to an absolute degree. Given this worldview, they’re never going to stop trying to game the system: if they fail this time they will jettison the parts they view as lacking utility and try again, or further damage the institutions and try again.

What angers me is few in the media asked what the fuck makes Donald Trump remotely qualified to be Potus. It wasn’t just that HRC was uniquely qualified as a former FLOTUS, Senator, & SoS, Trump was equally unqualified but the media loved covering his stupid circus rallies which really are a pathetic cross between a bad pep rally, Nuremberg rallies, & Clint Eastwood’s 2012 RNC moment.

re: #4 Backwoods_Sleuth

While Coloradans are spending 12 hours in line for a fast food joint opening for the first time in the state, there are millions of Americans spending hours in line for a food pantry handout because they’re starving.

Trump and the GOP have wrecked the safety net, gutted SNAP assistance, and then claim charity can fill the gap.

Charity can’t fill the gap. It’s not capable of feeding tens of millions of people.

SNAP can do that - SNAP is among the most efficient aid programs in history, and for every dollar spent on the program, it generates almost $1.50 in economic activity. It’s a multiplier of economic activity, but the GOP attacks it and complains that the food bought is excessive.

Trump and the GOP have wrecked the nation, and the most prosperous country on the planet has tens of millions starving because of a wrecked economy.
