re: #52 Dread Pirate Ron

The Nebraska Panhandle has come in with Monday numbers.

The risk-factor dial remains at the same place (severe risk of becoming infected) for the second week. All towns remain at severe risk except the same three with no cases (mine, Lisco, and Llewellyn)

Another person has died in Kimball County (seat: Kimball), bringing the total to 49.

The weekly positivity rate has dropped for the second week in a row. It is now 42.6%.
Cumulative positivity rate since March 29 has dropped to 21.4%.

Total cases: 5,472, active cases: 2,493. Cases have quintupled since October 10.

Most cases by age: tied 30-39 and 40-49, followed by 20-29.

Women and girls are 55% of cases, unknown gender are 7%.

My county has 86 cases total (roughly 2% of the county).

One by one, Nebraska cities are implementing mask mandates as COVID continues to surge across the state.

Gretna, Ralston, Norfolk and Hastings pass mask mandates (Omaha World-Herald)

Nothing says ā€œwe have a coherent planā€ like making municipalities all fend for themselves. Gretna and Ralston are Omaha suburbs, Norfolk is northwest of Omaha and southwest of Sioux City, South Dakota. Hastings is in south central Nebraska near the Kansas border.

Itā€™s tough to leave a religious belief behind. I get it; my wife telling me Iā€™m the sexiest man alive makes it tough for me to look in the mirror and see Iā€™m not the reincarnation of Charles Atlas.

That said, for all the talk of conservatives becoming violent, I suspect if that happens, itā€™s going to be toward the people who lied to them, not liberals (they always hated and threatened us).

All those threats to the Georgia Secretary of State and such arenā€™t coming from Democrats.

Iā€™m not sure he has the authority to destroy assets purchased for the Department of Defense paid for by Congress. It would take Congress to approve it, and even if the GOP was on-board with this, it wouldnā€™t get past the House.

Trump Dismantles Decades-Old Surveillance Treaty Irreparably On His Way Out The Door | Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow describes how Donald Trump in his lame duck period has not only abruptly removed the U.S from the decades old Open Skies Treaty that supplies the U.S. and its allies with surveillance data on Russian military activities, but has taken steps to dispose of the programā€™s specialized planes and removed the option of replacing them

The only question there is who he rightly owed loyalty to in 1777. If the answer is ā€œstill Great Britainā€, then his treason was until ā€˜78.

If it was ā€œthe United Statesā€, it was after then.

Meanwhile, Trump is trying to cripple the Open-Skies Treaty, withdrew from the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile Treaty, withdrew from the JCPOA treaty, withdrew from WHO, withdrew from the TPP, withdrew from the Paris Climate Accords, is sewing a ā€œstabbed in the backā€ legend amongst conservative voters, is still thieving money from the Treasury to prop up his businesses, the Senate under McConnell continues to ignore relief for businesses and people passed in May, state governors are still carrying out a de-facto genocide, ICE ordered to commit crimes against humanity at the border, Trump pardoning war criminals, &c &c.

Meanwhile, the villagers are still trying to soften Trumpā€™s image and bothsiderise everything.

My answer to all these ā€œLeave Trump aloneā€ bits is always going to be the same: The decision to investigate and (if necessary) prosecute Trump or his underlings should be left to the relevant agencies. It is no more right for Biden to order those agencies to give him a pass than it was for Trump to demand they engage in fishing expeditions against his enemies.

ā€œLet history be the judgeā€ was how we handled Nixon after Watergate. Shocker, the fact that he faced no legal consequences and was allowed to quietly retire from politics means today wingnuts snark that his only crime was ā€œHe got caught.ā€

The need to ā€œheal the nationā€ as expressed by Jerry Ford meant that all of Nixonā€™s bagmen ultimately faced no serious consequences, many continuing in Repub politics and some (ex: Bork) going on to become ā€œmartyrsā€ of the party when their role in the whole sorry affair ended up being roadblocks on their ultimate goals.

Ultimately, the precedent set by sweeping Watergate under the rug was the sentiment that so long as nobody was killed or their lives permanently ruined, then nothing warranted running a president out of office. Iran-Contra upped the ante by making it clear that lying to the country was perfectly okay if you had plenty of fall guys to jettison like so much chaff.

That is his strategic brand plan. He will never concede and spend the rest of his career giving speeches and rallies as the President-in-exile.

Remember that he insisted that he won the popular vote in 2016 and nobody took him to task for it. Getting his supporters to believe he won in 2020 is literally childā€™s play.

Trump To Roll Out Stiff Bond Requirements For Visitors From ā€˜Overstayā€™ Countries, Including Iran (Radio Free Europe)

Washington announced on November 23 that it will launch a six-month trial program next month to force visitors from about two dozen countries to post thousands of dollars in bonds before they enter the United States.

The aim, first spelled out in a presidential memorandum 19 months ago, is to discourage travelers from countries with high rates of visa offenders from overstaying their business and tourism visas.

Its planned rollout by President Donald Trumpā€™s administration comes just weeks before Democrat Joe Biden is expected to be sworn in as the 46th U.S. president in January.

The program, which can require the posting of bonds of up to $15,000, does not apply to immigrant visas.

The State Department said the rule will take effect on December 24, less than a month before the inauguration of a new administration, and continue through most of June.

It should target holders of business (B-1) and tourism (B-2) visas from around two dozen countries whose overstay rates exceeded 10 percent in 2019, most of them in Africa but also including Iran and Afghanistan, for instance.

Coronavirus cases among VA patients surpass 13,000

WASHINGTON ā€” More than 13,300 Department of Veterans Affairs patients are sick with the coronavirus ā€” a number that more than doubled in the past 20 days and represents the most active cases the VA has ever had at one time.

Cases have increased 108% since Nov. 2. On that day, VA cases hit an all-time high, surpassing the number of active cases seen during a surge of the virus in July. Every day since Nov. 2, the department has set a new record.

Deaths are also on the rise. As of Monday, 4,584 veterans had died of the virus ā€” up 12% since the beginning of the month. In addition, 69 VA employees have died, five of them in the past 20 days.

The Minneapolis VA hospital has the most cases across the VA system, with 433 patients who are currently sick with the virus ā€” an increase of 113% in a little over two weeks. The Cleveland VA hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, has the second-most cases with 417, and Aurora, Colorado, has the third, with 310.

Now Trump has lost face with the GOP, he is an admitted LOSER. That is gonna cost him votes in GA.

Had his legal team not been such a bunch of goombahs who could not tell MI from MN or had been able to correctly spell the name of the Governor of Michigan (or was that Minnesota?) he might still at least appear to have a fighting chance.

I think the spelt the Gov of PAā€™s name wrong also at one point.

The media are going to miss the Trumpman show: it is like a 24/7 running political crime-scandal-freak show, commencing with some outlandish morning tweets, punctuated by some contradictory statements from his Press Sec, some (former) colleague being arraigned, arrested, subpoenaed, charged, pleading guilty, him embarrassing himself with a foreign leader, or shots from one of his nutbag rallies.

Ratings are really going to slouch when all that is over.

Theyā€™re gonna have to do some work and create some actual programming

It depends on the shot. Weirdest thing I ever saw in that regard was a double-decker bus with the signboard reading ā€œKowloon Harbourā€ on the front driving past me in Central Scotland. Saying that there was a bus factory just a few miles away and they built buses for export all around the world, including Hong Kong. Another LHD/RHD thing to look out for is the beginning of the Oscar-winning Miyazaki movie ā€œSpirited Awayā€. The car the family are travelling in is a LHD import, an Audi IIRC.

New model vehicles are test-driven around city streets and freeways before the official release. All badges are removed and the vehicles are wrapped in camo. GM uses alternate black and white panels as their camo, Ford and Chrysler use optical illusion wrap (like zebra stripes). I have been excessively gloomy, especially after the election results showed that Trump received significantly more votes after he murdered over 200,000 Americans than he did in 2016 when his destruction and damage to our Republic was only speculative and not
actual. About 74 million voters selected him, and Republicans made significant gains in the House and have held on to the Senate so the dream of ā€œGOP delenda estā€ has fallen by the wayside.

But then I thought more about some of the moderate Democratic legislators backlash against progressive themes and ā€” donā€™t hate me for this ā€” but it does strike me for the average voter ā€” the calls to ā€œdefund the policeā€ and the rioting that accompanied some of the protests (even if promoted by white supremacists who showed up) may have done more to contribute to the increase in Trumpā€™s support. As they say, explaining means youā€™re losing ā€” and ā€œdefund the policeā€ was a self-inflicted wound, requiring significant context to clarify the meaning. Yes, there are the issues related to the outsized megaphones of RW media but the policing related messages were ones that did most of the damage. The number of Trump voters who are irredeemable is significantly less than 74 million and maybe Biden can lead this country successfully out of this darkness.

Yeah- the whole ā€œā€¦render unto Caesar what is Caesarā€™sā€ passage has been a constant thorn in the side of money-grubbing 100% Capitalist Christians everywhere fo a long time. In fact it was written out of the ā€œConservative Bibleā€ effort that flailed around about 10 years ago. This story and a handful of other bothersome tales from early Christianity expressing solidarity with the poor and commands to share the wealth donā€™t go over too well with todays American Evangelicals.

Eugene Robinson (WaPo) took that on, tongue only halfway into his cheek.

Want to understand Biden voters? Hereā€™s your reading list.

Who are they and what drove them to vote in such huge numbers, even during a pandemic? What makes them tick? Is it culture? Tribalism? Race? How did they come to their worldview, and why do they cling to it so passionately? What do they mean for the future of American democracy?
Iā€™m talking about the opaque and inscrutable Joe Biden voter, of course.
After Donald Trump won in 2016, the media and academia embarked on a numbingly comprehensive sociological and anthropological examination of ā€œthe Trump voter.ā€ Reporters and researchers swarmed what seemed like every bereft factory town in the industrial Midwest, every hill and hollow of Appalachia, every windswept farming community throughout the Great Plains. Had the past 3 weeks consisted of GOP leadership clearly stating that Trump had lost, congratulating Biden on a win, etc., then sure. But thatā€™s not what happened. They stayed quiet for the most part, some of them insisting that Trump won.

That is also because Trump has them held hostage over the Georgia runoff elections, but that is no excuse, only an explanation: they are the ones who backed this amoral narcissist.

Anxiety was extremely high on the drive down here. I made strenuous efforts to minimize time spent inside any space. We took two bathroom breaks, targeting what I hoped would be lesser-used locations. (It seemed to work out okay.) The rest of the trip was done by drive-thru and pay-at-the-pump. We had a small outdoor gathering planned, but then our daughter who works in a hospital spent some time with someone who then tested positive for Covid. Daughter was properly N95 masked and face shielded, but yeah, it increased the risk enough that we decided it wasnā€™t going to be worth it. I really hope my son and his girlfriend will be able to go, though. They all need a break, and I think the risk is really low, especially for younger people. Trump skank notwithstanding I think the United States Government needs to start design on a new White House because the old one is functionally obsolete in many ways. And there is too much potential consequence for that much risk to stand unchecked, IMO

The new site would be somewhere else in the national capital region that is more convenient to transportation & less inconvenient to the people who work live in the city and a better suited for security and diplomatic needs

I envision a residence, media and conference facility with state of the art protections and features for the digital world, an air hub

Turn the current White House into a museum and create a new masterpiece

My 2, controversial cents and sure itā€™s expensive, but so are band aid logistics of the status quo
