I’d love to see that too. Whether showing Donald Trump being dragged out in chains should be done is if the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Benefits:
- Showing the American people and the world that our elections are free and fair and the results WILL BE RESPECTED.
- Showing our diehard Tru’umpists that their leader is gone, and at the very least demoralize them in the political sphere.

Negatives:
- by further radicalizing the hard core Rephadis leading to more actual violence and more
- furthering the attempts of the more cautious/patient/intelligent members of our far-right to continue to destroy institutions that fought Trump’s (POSSIBLY STILL ONGOING) coup attempt.

I’d argue the hardcore Rephadi’s and the more cautious members of the far-right would do what they do anyways, so there’s no point in not throwing him out if he doesn’t come out willingly.

it does have a power all its own that’s terribly understated as a way of laying down markers as to what happened…..

largely overlooked today where media itself has partisan divides, sadly it appears that the lessons learned from Watergate and Nixon was for GOP to own their own propaganda arm and pay off those that could be bought…

The old building will make a great educational site, for history, a good museum. It could still be used for ceremonial purposes.

The underground infrastructure will need to be sealed off.

The real problem is that there are large executive offices nearby. This makes moving a Presidential residence and office complex much more difficult.

The Boston Globe is getting dragged hard on that tweet. Almost everyone is like “no, we’d love to see that.”

To understand mainstream news and opinion pieces in American media, I find it useful to look at it through a prism where the underlying rule is that ‘conservative white people must never, ever be made to feel bad or ashamed’. Hence pieces like this, like Cletus safaris, like the NYT and LA Times op-ed page being mostly used to scold liberals for looking down on conservative white people, and so on. It’s this rule that explains the obeisance that these mainstream outlets have for far-right crazy outlets like FOX and ONAN, and even Trump himself - all of these things are the soul of white America, and the mainstream media, seeing itself as the custodian and guardian of America’s soul, continues to pay homage.

That sucks, because the discovery phase would have been epic. Fox and those louts would have been wrecked during depositions. So they’ve paid to make it go away - just like they did with countless sex harassment cases and other malfeasance.

They consider all of this a cost of doing business. Nothing gets in the way of their agitprop.

So Macron’s on the telly talking about what happens next….

(Long long list of possible dates for slight lessening of lockdown, step by step, all conditional on results… If all goes well we can go skiing).

Basically it all comes down to 5,000 cases a day, if we can get the rate down to that there will be the possibility of a limited relaxation of lockdown for Christmas.

(That’s roughly the same as 25,000 at the scale of the US).

Vaccination: mRNA end December, others in spring. It will not be obligatory.

As well as all the other economic help given (paid furlough, extended unemployment pay… All restaurants, bars, discotheques &c that have been forced to close will get 20% of their turnover for the same period last year).

Demain nous vaincrons.

Vive la France, Vive la République.

Not too different than here in Czech Republic, though here, they’re moving a little faster as there’s now a case in front of the Constitutional Court regarding the shutdowns of businesses (basically, the Czech government told small businesses and entrepreneurs to go eat a bag of dicks) so they’ll probably accelerate that part of re-opening. If the CC rules the government does, in fact, have to pay compensation for lost profits, etc., yeah, there’s simply no money to do it without torpedoing the budget for the next decade or so, which is probably what’ll end up happening. Simply put…..massive deficit spending for the foreseeable future.

Oh, I know - but in Czech political culture, deficit spending is a big no-no. Granted, sometimes it can’t be helped, like this time for example, but generally, Czech governments do their best to avoid it wherever possible. Hell, this is a country where people literally save up the money to purchase a new car….so they won’t have to take out a loan.

Debt is viewed as shameful, something akin to a moral failing.

Yeah; sure, of course I understand being up to your eyeballs in debt isn’t a good thing, to be sure.

Czech Republic is in kind of a transition, from it’s old industrial/export-based economy to a consumerist/knowledge-based economy. The current government is a populist one, and simultaneously, doesn’t quite know how to grasp the future that’s coming - it strikes me that they’re genuinely afraid of that future.

Also, the first mass lay-offs are beginning here. It’s expected those lay-offs will continue to accelerate well into next year.

So basically 3% of Trump supporters live in a reality based world, and a maximum of 31% (who want Trump to fight until states certify results), can potentially be moved back to a reality based world.

This also implies that Republican politicians are _more_ sane than their supporters. God help us.

Edit: #96 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus below shows that this is an online poll of voters targeted with online ads…. which means it is _more_ likely to have a disproportionate percentage of politically “engaged” people.

In German, the word for debt, Schuld, is the same as the world for “guilt”

Here’s as much insight into their method as ChangeResearch release:

Change Research conducted a poll of 1,203 2020 Trump voters nationally on November 18-21, 2020. The full 2,559 voter sample was weighted to reflect the 2020 electorate, and the results were filtered to those who reported voting for Trump in 2020. All data shown in this document is among Trump voters only and the margin of error is +/- 2.83. Change Research reaches voters via targeted online ads that point people to an online survey instrument. Our Dynamic Online Sampling establishes and continuously rebalances advertising targets across region, age, gender, race, and partisanship to dynamically deliver large samples that accurately reflect the demographics of a population. Post stratification was done on state, gender, age, race, education, and 2020 presidential vote.

Selecting online only people, and through ads no less, is going to bias the replies to the online-addicted.

I’m betting many people who voted for Trump never will see those request for participation from ChangeResearch.

I just had a thought

Bob Dylan Is Not Dead, Despite MSNBC On-Air Report

On Saturday, MSNBC mistakenly reported that rock legend Bob Dylan was dead, and fans experience a split second of panic. The network was reporting on a recent auction where Dylan’s old documents were sold for thousands of dollars. In the list of top headlines, the anchor said that Dylan “died last year at the age of 79.”

In fact, Bob Dylan is alive and well, and MSNBC issued an apology and a retraction shortly afterward.

Basically, a case (I believe one of multiple) in Florida of a State Senator election where the Dem’s last name was Rodriguez, a spoiler candidate mysteriously got shoved into the race whose last name was also Rodriguez, and the Dem lost by 32 votes. The spoiler is some ex-con backed by a bunch of dark money, and the Miami Herald is saying that prosecutors have started an investigation. Of course, all this could be legal because Florida.

This is exactly the same sort of dirty election bullshit that happens consistently in Ukraine, just sayin’.

So, we’ve all seen the stories of Americans who think they don’t have to lockdown because of their freedumbs in the Constitution.

Well, if you think that is something… how about using the Magna Carta as an excuse?

The Big Issue, a sort of rag used to help raise support for causes, ventures into the fray:

Fact/Fiction: Can you use the Magna Carta to get out of lockdown?

We all want a way out of lockdown. When most of 2020 has consisted of looking at the same four walls or watching Netflix series that you’d previously disregarded as ‘too much of a commitment’, any (legal) way out will do.

While last week’s news of a Covid-19 vaccine breakthrough was a welcome one, it’s not going to do much to alleviate the current restrictions to our liberties.

So, naturally, some looked to an 805-year-old royal charter instead. We are, of course, talking about the Magna Carta.

Numerous social media users have pointed to Article 61 of the Magna Carta as a way to avoid complying with the lockdown restrictions that were introduced in England on November 5.

Not a valid statistical sample at all.

Just like at our yesterday’s night zoom meeting, one of my friends repeated how Trump improved his performance among African-American men, and I had to keep repeating that the statistic was based on election day exit polls and so, especially this year, was particularly biased and unrevealing. I guess if they had asked the voters whether they supported Hillary in 2016 and switched to Trump in 2020, that might have been more useful but my guess is that the pollster asked only who they supported this year.

It is clear that what will be needed by and from Biden is a set of good talkers in the upper echelon of the Administration.

People who are good at oration, good at countering the attacks.

Obama tried to be above it all… and was damned as aloof.

Biden himself is ok at addressing people, especially in small groups and one-on-one situations.

But he is not going to rally large crowds.

Now, you may think that is a positive, and as a human characteristic I agree. Life is better without the charismatic leader swaying masses.

Still, the bottom line is that politics is about convincing people.

And in 2021 that will mean being able to work both social media outlets and the television crowd.

My fear is simply this: Biden is hobbled by not having a Senate to back him and a House that is only slightly in the hands of Dems and which could fall to the GOP in the midterms.

Competence is not valued by many, many voters.

Voters want emotion. Voters want to feel vindicated.

Biden is as milquetoast as any President in a long time.

So the time that is available really needs to be approached as the opportunity to run advertisement 24/7.

This is why Trump was so successful. He knows how to work marks.

Now I don’t want Biden to be like Trump in that Trump is decietful.

But Biden needs to be just as dogged in stealing the mic, of hogging TV time.

So I see a Biden Presidency as a full scale advertisement for what is needed in America, the changes that have to happen.

Being competent is not enough.

Josh Marshall expressed similar thoughts today at TPM:

…But beyond specific legislation or executive actions there is something more basic we should focus on - something Democrats have often done poorly at, not least in the presidency of Barack Obama, in which Biden served as Vice President. It is never enough to govern well and trust that voters will reward good governance. It simply never works that way.

Policy can never be separated from politics or the work of using policy to create the political power which can make policies enduring. […]

Quite simply, everything that happens during the first two years of the Biden administration must be planned and organized through the prism and organizing principle of the argument Democrats will make to voters in the 2022 midterm election.

Little quips are meant to be more cute than tough.

Yes, Biden is cute in his language when he needs to be.

He’s a decent person and knows how to maneuver politics in DC.

What I am referring to in my laments is how to reach those outside of the DC bubble. All those millions who don’t care about much but may care about one or two issues if they bother to show up and vote.

And yes, the Bidens are milquetoast. See Trump for not-milquetoast.

The only standard Trump should be used for is why federalism works. If you’re going to use him as a standard, then no other president qualifies.

Biden speaks pretty plainly. But I do kind 9f think Republicans have missed something about him: he’s a white male.

Comms people are going to be essential, but I’m expecting the WH Press Corps to suddenly realize that they have to question everything Biden’s people say even after deferring to Trump for years knowing that he was gaslighting and lying to no end. Magic balance fairy bulkshit and claiming that they’re just doing their job.

The Media did that to Jimmy Carter after Nixon and Ford.

went into town this morning to pick up a couple things at the grocery.
Driving through town I discovered eastern Kentucky’s newest version of The Lost Cause: instead of the stars and bars flag, it’s trump/pence signs.
There were maybe 2 or 3 before the election (not counting the big trucking company on the highway that decorated the fence with signs and tiny flags). Suddenly now there are dozens, everywhere, like mushrooms popping up after a storm.
Truly pathetic.

Milquetoast to make the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2005 absolutely damaging - especially the part where Federal Loans for Education are not dischargeable in bankruptcy (along with a bunch of other anti-consumer changes that foced many people out of Chapter 7 into Chapter 13….)

So will Biden retain Trump appointees Gina Haspel and Christopher Wray? Wray doesn’t appear to have any problems but Haspel’s involvement with torture would be a red flag, though it wouldn’t be surprising, given her background and knowledge, that she has the support of the majority of the agency.

My guess is Melania is already packing. She’s going to take Barron to live in NYC. She won’t have to live with donald in Florida AND it makes it harder to seize her home when they come after trump’s assets. You heard it hear first.

Not here first: I’ve been seeing/hearing/repeating rumors about Melania’s post-Presidency plans since before they were even “Presidency”. And the only difference of opinion seems to be where she and Barron are likely to settle. My guess is back in Slovenia, YMMV…..

And now it looks the Jarvanka are planning on landing in New Jersey (until, hope against hope, they land in prison.) I love it that the NYT says they’re “spurning” NYC, rather than the other way around. Wonder who’s paying for their renovations? Three guesses—first 2 don’t coun.t
