Obama apparently should have had an anger translator to get his point across all these years. Because people didn’t take his well considered words seriously enough. They confused rational thought and well-considered words to be aloof.

Once in awhile I come across something that makes me feel ok about my kid,my role as his mom and his friends (mid to late 20s):

I heard my son talking to one of his friends before dinner last night. All his close friends are on the autism spectrum and all of them are metalheads who LOVE live music. The pandemic has been hard on their mental health but they seem to be doing a pretty good job of checking in with each other and sometimes doing safe visits here at our house. Anyway, the kid was talking about the vaccines and said he was going to drag his friends to the doctor or wherever to get them when they become available. Because the more of them that get it, the safer concerts and shows will be. His buddy was scared about the vaccine (his parents are wingnuts)and my son said, “Dude, my mom told me that when we knew for sure that this was going to be safe, the whole family is getting the shots. My mom wouldn’t let us get the damned things if she was worried about safety. She goes by what doctors and scientists say, not that fucking moron in the White House”. Heh. I raised such a good son, lol.

So I see Twitterers are huffing and puffing about Obama saying something abour religious Hispanics…

I still think that the tenuous coalition in the Democratic party is fragile enough that calling out fundamentalists (of any ancestry or culture) is risky.

Which is why Biden and Harris didn’t do such in the run up to the election.

But Obama has always been spot on with the bibles-and-guns analysis.

And this makes some people uncomfortable.

Technically have they called the election? — Didn’t they just call the key states that certified Biden as winner? Are they actually saying that Biden is President-Elect or are they holding out hope that the results could be de-certified?

Looks like they are saying that they won’t call it until all states have certified their results, but at least they are opposed to legislatures selecting alternative slates of electors. If Trump had conceded, they certainly would have called it by now but they are trying to go along with his absurd claims as long as they can.

My grandchildren would tell me to go to hell if I tried to feed them Jim’s re-constituted sawdust meal.

Televangelist Jim Bakker: Buy My Pancake Mix Or Your Grandkids Go To Hell

Hard sell: Weeping televangelist Jim Bakker warns viewers that if they don’t buy his pancake mix their grandchildren will go to Hell.

An emotional Bakker went on a tear-filled rant begging his audience to buy buckets of his End Times survival food, warning that the grandchildren of his audience members would face eternal damnation unless they called a 1-888 phone number so they could send him $60 (plus shipping) for a bucket of pancake mix.

Bakker, deeply concerned that President Trump would be killed by Democrats, declared:

If they kill our president or they destroy him or whatever, if we elect the other side. This is it. I think maybe Trump is here to give us time to get ready because all hell is going to break loose.

We’re not going to have the Antichrist show up to get the sign of the Mark of the Beast on our forehead or hand, it won’t happen without hunger. Hunger is going to be the main thing. Most people don’t get it, they don’t want to get it, but that is why I am so obsessed with you all being prepared.

Leaving it to the doj

One of the many things that annoys me in films is the way orders are given: “do this, do that, then do that”.

Real bosses just say what has to be achieved, real underlings then do the necessary things to achieve the goal.

Biden: the law should be obeyed. By everyone.

Doj: ok boss.

Result: criminals are investigated, tried, convicted and punished.

have to really enjoy the political calculus being played here by the GOP itself. They know that Trump has lost, will privately admit that its so, but will keep publicly quiet on the off chance that something absurd happens, say a Biden assassination, a disaffected Democrat finally goes off the rails and starts shooting GOP politicians igniting a civil war opportunity, something…. that can be used as a political fulcrum (say another liberal scotus member dying).

One thing is very clear this Christmas is that many Americans don’t have the disposable income they had in prior years.

I wonder how Black Friday sales will fare.

The upper income brackets for the most part appear to be doing fine. The very richest are doing great. We see that in the luxury house sales in this county. But the median house sales are very tight, the price only held up because there are so very few houses on the market.

There have been fewer houses on the market here in San Diego county than there have been for many years.

The entire housing sector of the economy is limping along. Since this sector is the one that has been more important as manufacturing has declined, the reality is our economy is suffering.

Joe Biden wants Brexit deal done quickly as he aims to rebuild ‘coalition of the West’

Allies of Joe Biden have made clear that he expects to see a Brexit trade deal concluded swiftly as he seeks to rebuild a “coalition of the West” to respond to the growing spectre of China.

I don’t think the egg can be unscrambled.

Both domestically and internationally, I doubt things can return to how they were years ago.

China is China. Big, and still working on centuries old grievances. They are no more evil than the next autocratic government. Just bigger. And I fear that Biden and company are falling for the same old misunderstandings so prevalent in the Anglosphere, that somehow China wants to conquer “the West”. What is clear is that China wants to enforce its will on its neighbors. This is not a new thing. It’s about a 3000 year old thing.

What we need is to be friends to our friends again.

It’s fine if Biden says unrealistic things like this — people like their illusions — as long as he puts seekers of justice in charge of DOJ and federal law enforcement and then stays out of their way as they go after the most brazen criminal organization since Al Capone’s mob.

I have no problem with the sentiments he’s professing, in fact they are likely to be needed, but once he actually has the power to govern, I fully hope that he will not turn it into a partisan issue, but a national one. That those who broke the laws get prosecuted for their crimes, you know, normal… will wait and see if we’re allowed to have it I suppose.

Telling that Pompeo’s immediate response when asked about Biden’s renewed commitment to diplomacy and alliances is to claim credit for the coalition against ISIS, which was built by the Obama/Biden team through painstaking US-led diplomacy.

And then they told Turkey to go ahead and kill the Kurds, who did most of the work.

“After years of denying allegations of lax financial oversight, the National Rifle Association has made a stunning declaration in a new tax filing: Current and former executives used the nonprofit group’s money for personal benefit and enrichment,” the Washington Post reports.

“The NRA said in the filing that it continues to review the alleged abuse of funds, as the tax-exempt organization curtails services and runs up multimillion-dollar legal bills. The assertion of impropriety comes four months after the attorney general of New York state filed a lawsuit accusing NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre and other top officials of using NRA funds for decades to provide inflated salaries and expense accounts.”

America could try actually treating China as a friend rather than threatening them continuously by, for example, sailing nuclear carrier task groups up and down just outside its national waters. It could make trade agreements with them rather than trying (unsuccessfully) to isolate them and fight economically-damaging tarriff wars. But, if the USA’s position is that China needs to do as it’s told by the Americans and not talk back then I don’t hold out much hope.

What, countries don’t go around waving a big stick if they’ve got a really big military and a demonstrated propensity to use it at the drop of a hat? Really?

I come from the UK where we still sing “Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves”, remembering the time when the Royal Navy owned the oceans and Queen Vic ruled over a quarter of the world’s land mass. It got to be too much, eventually and we gave up nearly all of it. You could learn from our example but I doubt you will, it’s not like we Brits suddenly woke up one day and said “you know, this is a bad idea” and stopped, we were ground down by the effort and the expense of maintaining what we had taken by force, bought and/or stolen over the centuries. It was a dismal time as it happened.

Songs from the times of Empire are good though — “From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli…”

The rebellion against Pete Ricketts continues, as two more towns order mask mandates.

La Vista, Grand Island OK mask mandates. ‘I’m smart enough to listen to smart people’ (Omaha World-Herald)

La Vista is a suburb of Omaha.

La Vista and Grand Island on Tuesday became the latest Nebraska cities to pass mask mandates to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

La Vista approved its mask requirement on the same day the Douglas County Board called on Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts to issue a statewide mask mandate.

The La Vista City Council voted 6-2 to approve the indoor mask mandate, which takes effect Friday and expires Feb. 23. The measure is similar to ones in other metro area cities, which require masks in indoor places open to the public, including businesses, churches, schools and day cares.

The Grand Island City Council approved its mask mandate Tuesday night on an 8-2 vote, during a meeting that lasted more than three hours.

Ron Depue, a Grand Island resident, supported the ordinance, saying through tears that the council’s decision was an important one.

“I have no medical or scientific expertise. I’ve just been around a long time and I’m smart enough to listen to smart people,” Depue said. “Every single one of our health professionals here in town has said we need a mask mandate. They have pled for a mask mandate.”

re: #161 sagehen

It wasn’t the “ordinary” cost of upkeep… it’s that WWII was REALLY expensive.

WWII was a world-wide war for Britain because of Empire — Singapore and Australia and Hong Kong and India and Africa, all the “pink bits” on the map needed defending. We were only fighting the Germans because we, as a Major Power had guaranteed the safety of various bits of Europe like Poland and Belgium hence the Expeditionary Force which, as any military logistician will tell you, are REALLY expensive (see Iraq I, Iraq II and Afghanistan for recent US examples) and they’re especially costly when you lose one like we did in May 1940.

If it had been us just trying to keep the Nazis from invading Britain then no problem, we could have done that in our sleep. Sure we got a lot of help FROM the Empire, Canada and Australia and India provided a lot of manpower and supplies but the Empire was unravelling even then. India was heading for independence, the Dominions of Canada and Australia were effectively independent nations who stuck with us for old times sake and the odd bits dotted around the map that used to be coaling stations for the Royal Navy were getting to be less and less useful as oil and air power took over from “Iron men in wooden ships”, but they still needed defending too because they were “ours”.

Eventually an empire becomes an expensive luxury but it’s very hard to see the family silver getting auctioned off piece by piece and denial isn’t just a river in Egypt (which, of course was owned by Britain for a time).

Him not going away is fine with me as long as it’s to the detriment of Republicans. I’m very disappointed that while he lost, he wasn’t able to bring down other Republicans in the House or Senate. He needs to do better.

Everybody, please stay safe. The largest superspreader event in history is starting, and our healthcare system may completely collapse under the strain. Thankfully my wife finally got to start working from home this week, and we are staying hunkered down until we can get vaccinated.

University of Nebraska Medical Center, home of the National Quarantine Center, says Thanksgiving will collapse the health care system in Omaha. Not “maybe,” not “we’ll see,” but “it will.” They are preparing for a wave of death.

The National Quarantine Center warns no one should be holding any Thanksgiving event with people from outside their home. As we can see even here at this site of “rigid empiricism,” people are planning to ignore these warnings from all over the nation because somehow “the only moral abortion Thanksgiving is my abortion Thanksgiving.” They will rationalise, they will claim every sort of protection, then they will ignore every doctor, nurse, and public health official in the land.

In the meantime, UNMC is offering $17 an hour for temporary workers to come in and do anything (office work, administrative paper pushing, answering telephones, &c) so anyone with medical training can be taken off those jobs and thrown into the meat grinder that our governor’s intentional genocide is producing.

The only moral abortion wedding is my daughter’s abortion wedding.

A relative of Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico took to Twitter to publicly admonish him for attending a wedding party with more than 50 people in Florida only days after he proposed Naperville adopt a rule that would make mask usage mandatory in all public places.

In a written statement, Mayor Steven Chirico defended his decision to attend his daughter’s wedding this weekend in Naples, Florida, from which pictures surfaced and circulated online.

His niece, a former BuzzFeed personality with nearly 100,000 Twitter followers blasted Chirico online, igniting a spark of hypocrisy since just last week he warned Naperville residents a mask mandate may soon materialize while purportedly not practicing what he’s preaching — claims he contests.

Not sure how delusional. Lying. It’s his faithful base who are all delusional. Let’s recall that Trump kept a copy of Hitler’s speeches by his bedside — he’s going for the stab-in-the-back attack for the next 4 years to prevent Biden from getting any cooperation from any Republican in the House or the Senate. And the GOP will march in lockstep with him — if they had suffered a real loss in the Senate, they might have reconsidered but they will undermine anything that Biden tries to achieve and SCOTUS will support them. It’s going to be a nightmare unless the Georgia races will go blue, and that’s highly unlikely. The only hope is 2 GOP senators switching parties and doing what’s right — like that’s ever going to happen.

It’s a nice sentiment and it’s probably what Biden needs to be saying. But it’s simply not true. The people who voted for Trump are absolutely at war with everyone who didn’t. That’s just an obvious reality.

that’s why he said “we’re.” There’s nothing about the pronoun “we’re” that is all inclusive. It just means that the class Biden belongs to—thoughtful, often Christian, moderate and liberal people—is not at war with other members of that class.

I hope so. That’s one of the things that’s keeping us apart for the holidays. That we can see the end (we hope.)

Of course, there is the issue of who gets the vaccine and when.
But, I’d like to think that once people start getting vaccinated, rates of infection will drop. That will probably just mean people quit caring whether or not they’ve been vaccinated and spread it far and wide.
Mr. C. and I are both over 65 so we’d presumably be given it fairly early on, and that will let us visit without too much worry about catching it (and wearing masks, of course.)

According to my daughter, Contra Costa County Regional Hosp. is swimming in Covid. re: #265 calochortus

And the reason we’ve moved ourselves from an outdoor dinner for 8 to Zoom is because of people like the new mom who kept going to the nursery with her mask below her nose. They’d tell her to pull it up and she would until they weren’t looking and then pull it back down. She was Covid positive and knew it.

Tomorrow soon turns into yesterday.
Everything we see just fades away.
There’s sky and sand where mountains used to be.
Time drops by a second to eternity.

It doesn’t matter if we turn to dust;
Turn and turn and turn we must!
I guess I’ll see you dancin’ in the ruins tonight!
Dancin’ in the ruins!
Guess I’ll see you dancin’ in the ruins tonight!

There’s laughter where I used to see your tears.
It’s all done with mirrors, have no fears.
There’s nothing pure or sacred in our time.
The nights we spend together are no crime.

It doesn’t matter if we turn to dust;
Turn and turn and turn we must!
I guess I’ll see you dancin’ in the ruins tonight!
Dancin’ in the ruins!
Guess I’ll see you dancin’ in the ruins tonight!

Like marble statues all with gold inlaid
In castles built of silence, let us play.
Even though our skulls rot in our flesh.
We can build a laser, tear the mesh.

It doesn’t matter if we turn to dust;
Turn and turn and turn we must.
I guess I’ll see you dancin’ in the ruins tonight! Dancin’ in the ruins!

The libertarian honcho of Lubbock Right to Life (a medical equipment dealer in real life) is also a big advocate of price gouging in emergencies. In true libertarian fashion, he says that this is the only fair way to ensure that people who deserve the goods, ie those with the strongest bargaining position, will have control of them. I reminded him that a shotgun in the face is a very strong bargaining position, especially if he is holding food that somebody’s hungry kids could use. His response was that he also had a gun and knew how to use it, which will not be relevant when he falls asleep. Hungry people also have to sleep, of course, but since they are not libertarians they will have an easier time setting up cooperative arrangements with other hungry folk.

Actually, he and the weed sellers are on the same level. At least in Arizona, weed sellers cannot take credit cards, it’s strictly cash because of the interstate nature of the transactions. That said, because of national bank regulation by the OCC, I believe that currently weed accounts are being set up in state-chartered banks, again, to get around the interstate nature of banks.

I’m pretty sure my evil too big to fail employer is not officially lobbying to make weed legal, but I’m also sure that they’d love to bring weed into the Big Banking system.

We all know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell. That’s why they’re sometimes used to sniff out drugs or bombs, or to protect our first responders.

But a dog can actually recognize factors that make up a person’s personality, according to a study published in the journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews. Specifically, they can sense when a person is being “mean” to another person.

Which brings up my eternal question: Who is going to clean the toilets and collect the trash in Galt’s Gulch? The residents won’t pay enough to make it worthwhile.

Eventually, slaves will. The progression is inexorable in a society where there is no control over the power of the strong to prey on the weak.

They’ll just move to a new place to despoil.

You misunderstand. I wasn’t complaining about people not knowing about the laws on kidnapping.

I was complaining about people not knowing about the relations between state and federal law (FFS what do you think the “United States” means) and people thinking criminal law is somehow different by if the victim is not a citizen.

It gets kind of blurred at times, and can depend a lot on who’s in charge of the courts. The Civil Rights stuff was dependent on a very expensive view of when the federal government can get involved. Robert’s would like to go back to more of a Jim Crow view of federal reach.

The Helots that they expect to subjugate by force of arms.

If Galt’s Gulch was ever really created it would be the one legitimate use of three W78’s that I can imagine…

I just find it hard to believe they’d have sufficiently superior weaponry to take on the vast number of “inferior people” out here. They view themselves as this small number of superior people in a sea of dreck. I think they smugly look at at cities “beginning to burn” at the end, although why people are burning the cities is not clear to me.

Nah. They always tear themselves apart, because libertarianism is based on the virtue of selfishness, and they will always either be grifters or attract them.

I think that the scenario most of them imagine is:
A) Society collapses from X (invasions by “others”, ecological, plague, etc)
B) People wander out from untenable cities and have what little they have plundered
C) They have strongholds with large stockpiles from before and plundering
D) People line up to be “protected” by the virtuous “knights” in exchange for labor and food supplied to the local baron who then passes tribute up the food chain to the strongest of them.
E) That strongest one crowns himself and sets about recreating the golden age of 1100AD England

That’s the fantasy. It underlies a lot of libertarian and monarchist fantasy. One example that throws a huge amount of White Supremacism maintained via WMD’s (the use of mustard gas to kill ravening hordes of blah peoples) is “Lucifer’s Hammer.”

William and I were talking about what the lepertarians really expect, sooner or later starving refugees will come to them for food or other critical survival and the lepers will set their own price. Of course, in reality it would fall apart very quickly without external support in the form of law enforcement, courts and other collectivist entities.
