And Now, the Justice Department Is Investigating a Presidential Pardon Bribery Scheme

Politics • Views: 25,134

Nobody is really surprised by this news, but still — this one is wild. Justice Department investigating potential presidential pardon bribery scheme, court records reveal.

The Justice Department is investigating a potential crime related to funneling money to the White House or related political committee in exchange for a presidential pardon, according to court records unsealed Tuesday in federal court.

The case is the latest legal twist in the waning days of President Donald Trump’s administration after several of his top advisers have been convicted of federal criminal charges and as the possibility rises of Trump giving pardons to those who’ve been loyal to him.

re: #325 NO SMOCKING GUN!

Naw, no reason for him to run 3rd party when all of the GOP voters belong to him. He would have to recreate the RNC from scratch, and Trump is a lazy parasite.

The reason to do it is to “prove” that he’s bigger than the party… which is absolutely something that would appeal to his ego. And all he’d have to do is make sure the Constitution Party (or whatever) has ballot access in all 50 states (or hell, not even in the solidly blue states he had no chance of winning anyway). He gets to 15% in the national polls he gets a podium at the debates, between that, twitter, and rallies, that’s all he thinks he needs.

The click clack of a rotary phone dial.

My parents had a desktop rotary phone into the early 1990s. When you dialed the phone, it would ding as the dial went back to its resting position. We dubbed it the Fischer Price phone, which would also fit into this particular twitter query.

Once the phone stopped working, they got push button phones, but it took a couple of years for them to change their service. Until they updated their service, you had to wait while the number was being “dialed” to push the next number.

re: #13 Teddy’s Person ✌

Going back to my modem memories, there was actually a command in most modems that let it emulate a rotary phone.

None of this is surprising or shocking when you realize that all the pardons are done with Trump’s eye for what he can get out of it. Pay to play is how Trump operates. It’s all he’s ever done, and now we’ve got impeachable conduct from Trump for engaging in pardons under these circumstances.

It’s felony conduct. And the GOP will simply ignore it or fixate on Neera instead.

I was always particularly good at it. It helped living in Indiana, where everything is laid out in neat squares (or rectangles) and the roads are numbered, so as long as you knew which county you were in, you could establish a pretty good fix on your location pretty quickly.

Jennifer Rubin calling it on the media’s delicate treatment of Republicans:

…the media must do more than transcribe their disingenuous remarks.

The correct question for all of the Republicans is: You know perfectly well that Biden won and that Trump’s legal claims have been dismissed, so why are you delegitimizing an election?…

The media must stop indulging in the fantasy that Republicans believe the excuses and lies they spout…

Unless they press these politicians to answer for their conduct, the media are simply turning over their platforms to propagandists — again.

We had an outhouse when I was young. Didn’t get an indoor toilet until I was about 7 or 8, can’t remember exactly.

Same when I was in Michigan.

I also went to one-room schools through second grade (and in Maryland was in a segregated school in K).

One-room school wouldn’t throw off children here though, since our town closed our one-room school only a couple years ago.

We won’t get any lockdown at all, even though we’re at a 43.8% weekly positivity rate (+0.7%)

pphd.org

Total positive: 6,087 (+82)
Deaths: 67 (-3 removed through political vetting)
Hospital beds available: 39% (ICU beds 22%)
Two towns have been lowered from “severe risk” to “high risk” (Hay Springs in Sheridan County and Bridgeport in my county); the same three villages have not recorded a single case (mine, Lisco, and Llewellyn)
Women, girls, and “unknown gender” make up 2/3 of cases

Jack Burton  Dec 1, 2020 • 6:49:44pm

re: #107 jaunte

Among the reasons we shdn’t assume Trump can legally issue pardons of offenses he doesn’t know about is this: The Constitution allows POTUS to pardon “offenses.” A pardon of “all possible offenses” is not a pardon of offenses. It’s a pardon — an attempted pardon — of a person.

The biggest problem with all of this hand-wringing about Trump issuing corrupt pardons is it should be self-evident that Trump cannot pardon himself or his administration. If that was the intent of the Constitution, the Executive Branch would be literally above the law and could get away with anything. Since the constitution lists things the Executive can and cannot do, it is directly stating that the branch is not above the law.

If this were the intent we would have a dictator for life who could ignore the law, the rest of the constitution, congress, and the courts with impunity. This is obviously not the intent. Any judge who sees this differently is in on the scam.
