Today’s Covid numbers, excluding Nebraska. It will take a few days to make up for the poor data collection over the holiday.

I guess they put up their numbers before Nebraska reports.

Here’s our numbers.

Nebraska Statewide Covid-19 Dashboard

Total cases: 128,407 (doubled since October 25)
New cases: 1,941
Total deaths: 1,018
New deaths: 12

Men and boys are 60% of cases (the reverse of the Panhandle)

re: #122 Rightwingconspirator

WTF what does it take to assert a few healthy mandates?

You got me. Every epidemiologist, doctor, and nurse in the state has been pleading with Gov. Ricketts to do anything. He refuses, saying it will “breed resistance” (his words).

His spokesman went on a three-day tear across social media attacking only women doctors, nurses, and public health officials, prompting doctors and nurses from around the country to demand his resignation.

Pete Ricketts says he won’t bend to the liberal mob (that, and it would be the third spokesman he would have had to fire, the other two being outed as posters at Stormfront and VDare).

There is no relief for us. We are condemned to a genocide (which doesn’t help when people outside the state say “those people in red states get what they deserve”).

Earlier today there was a large-ish earthquake in western Nevada, itself an aftershock of a large earthquake last May. Most faults in NV run north-south, part of the basin and range extension, but this particular fault is an odd one that runs east-west.

Anyway, smaller aftershocks are really coming in tonight, one every few minutes:

From my limited understanding, what is going on is simply crustal blocks falling over.

New Orleans swingers’ convention led to 41 Covid-19 infections, event organizer says

The owner of Naughty Events, which hosted the convention, said the company has reached out to attendees and conducted “very aggressive” contact tracing.
The owner of an events company says his four-day swingers’ convention in New Orleans held last month has been tied to 41 new coronavirus infections.

The case count from the “Naughty N’awlins” convention, which began on Nov. 11, jumped from five positive tests to 41 confirmed cases in a matter of days, Naughty Events Owner Bob Hannaford wrote in a blog post Friday. Hannaford wrote that the company has reached out to attendees to urge them to get tested and conducted “very aggressive” contact tracing.

Though most of the cases have been mild or asymptomatic, at least two people had a “tougher time” and were “suffering,” he said.

I wonder if the Falwells have been tested.
Gives new meaning to the term “super-spreader.”
I’ll let myself out now.

“You see, we have no idea how many people got tested after our event, nor if anyone tested positive and didn’t tell us,” Hannaford wrote. “There could also be people that are positive, but without symptoms, so they never got tested.”

Naughty Events issued wristbands that indicated if an individual had shown paperwork to prove they had antibodies and other wristbands that had the date of the individuals’ last negative test result. Attendees were also required to socially distance in lines and wear masks in public spaces, Hannaford wrote, but some attendees admitted to being more lax on the last few days of the convention.

That right there was the argument of every person saying they would have Thanksgiving with their small selection of friends or family or “pod.” You can’t know if someone was exposed and didn’t know they were contagious, or just straight-up lied to you. The tests only indicate the status of the person at the time they took the test.

Health officials continue pushing mask mandate (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Health officials renewed calls for a mask mandate Tuesday after documents showed Gov. Pete Ricketts brushed off recommendations to install a mask mandate by the federal task force on the coronavirus.

Despite a Kansas study showing mask mandates work to decrease the spread of the coronavirus, Nebraska and 12 other states have not issued a mask mandate. Information released this week indicates a White House task force has been encouraging Nebraska to adopt a mask mandate, on some level, since August.

Ricketts said at a Monday press conference his office had problems with the White House’s data evaluating COVID-19 in the state, but didn’t elaborate, saying his plan was tailored for the state.

“We put together here a plan in Nebraska that’s right for Nebraska,” he said. “We listened to all sorts of experts. We take the White House information into consideration. We talk to our local folks, our public health directors, so we look at a variety of different sources to come up with our directed health measures.”

Panhandle Public Health District Director Kim Engel said, “We were not aware of the recommendations from the White House Task Force,” and reiterated support for a universal mask mandate.

“We are unsure why the governor does not support a statewide masking policy when masks have been proven to reduce the transmission of the virus, and Nebraska is one of less than a dozen states that have not passed similar protective measures at this point,” she said in a statement to the Star-Herald. “We know masks ensure critical continuity of employees at work and kids at school which is imperative to sustaining daily operations during this pandemic.”

Key GOP officials in Georgia pushed back against Trump’s narrative of a stolen election. They are fine with disenfranchising minorities before the election, but they believed that the election itself was run honestly and have taken umbrage against the Trump allegations to the contrary. My fear is that these officials will all be primaried by those who defer 100% to Trump and would happily participate in sabotaging election results that do not come out the way they wanted. And these extremists then go on to win the general election.

The next election, in two years, will be under the aegis of a Democratic DoJ, and with an electorate that is purple if not blue. There’s no reason to think that repugs will continue to hold on to statewide offices.

LINCOLN — Add the Nebraska State Capitol Christmas celebrations to the list of pandemic victims.

There will be no Christmas tree in the Rotunda this year and no tree-lighting ceremony. No Carol Sing for the public, and none of the usual holiday tuba and brass concerts.

State officials made the announcement Tuesday, saying the events are being canceled to help visitors and staff prevent infection by avoiding the three C’s: crowded places, close contact and confined spaces.

But the Capitol will not be totally devoid of holiday spirit. The two large concolor fir trees at the base of the Capitol’s north plaza will be illuminated with colored lights. There also will be a smaller tree in the reception room of the Governor’s Office, in the northeast hallway of the second floor. (more)

Alliance, Nebraska rejects a mask mandate for now.

Mayor Discusses Possible Mask Mandate (Alliance Times-Herald)

Following a discussion about the impact of COVID-19 on Box Butte General Hospital at the Alliance City Council meeting, Mayor Mike Dafney indicated a city-wide mask mandate could be implemented if the coronavirus continues to spread.

BBGH CEO Lori Mazanec spoke to council members last Tuesday, citing that day’s report of seven more people in the Panhandle succumbing to the virus. As of press time, there have been 49 deaths in the Panhandle related to COVID-19. She said hospitalizations continue to increase, even locally.

“Nebraska marks seven straight weeks of record new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, deaths. Rural hospitals are now feeling the impact of bigger cities,” said Mazanec. “The state also recorded a new weekly high for deaths related to the novel coronavirus. The deaths of 74 Nebraskans were reported in a seven day period that ended on Saturday. That was up from 55 deaths reported in each of the previous two weeks.”

Mazanec said the largest number of positive cases falls among people between ages 20 and 49.

“It’s lucky if they’re healthy enough not to be hospitalized, however, we have no way to tell if they are quarantining during their illness and maintaining that isolation for the full recommended 14 days,” Mazanec said. “We’ve learned that people are contagious two days before they have symptoms. This is where masks make a difference, is when you’re out in the public, and you don’t even know you’re going to get sick.”

BBGH [Box Butte General Hospital] has halted elective surgeries requiring an overnight stay, Mazanec noted, because of the need for hospital beds for COVID-19 patients. She noted that the State COVID Transfer Center has played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of hospitalizations. Patient preference, Mazanec explained, can not be taken into account when patients are transferred to other hospitals for care, meaning that patients from the region have been transferred as far as Salt Lake City, Utah and St. Louis Missouri because of hospital capacity issues.

“Box Butte General Hospital’s COVID hospitalizations over the past three weeks have ranged from five to 12 patients at a time,” said Mazanec. “This has been as high as 67 percent of our total staffed beds, and continues to impact admissions overall. As a critical access hospital, we have 25 beds total. This week, yesterday, we had 18 patients filling those beds. The care requires isolation protocols and focus on one to one care.

Manchin: Ocasio-Cortez ‘more active on Twitter than anything else’

Hey Joe, Ocasio-Cortez is engaging a whole lot of people (especially young people) in politics. That’s a good thing.

Sen. Joe Manchin (d-w.va.) questioned the legislative experience of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a leading member of the Democrats’ progressive wing with whom he has clashed over the future of the party.

“I guess she put the dagger stare on me,” Manchin told The New York Times in reference to a photo the congresswoman tweeted of her glaring at the moderate during this year’s State of the Union Address. “I don’t know the young lady — I really don’t. I never met her. I’m understanding she’s not that active with her bills or in committee. She’s more active on Twitter than anything else.”

You’re not the victim here, Joe. As for her legislative experience, she wasn’t born a representative. She’s gaining that experience like every first-term representative.

They have allowed Trump to put children in cages, make threats towards his political opponents, engage in bullying and corrupt acts. They will have nothing of substance to say to President Biden since they are partisan to the core.

This principle applies to everyone - journalists, writers, all of us. I’ve said this before, but what we do can never, ever be guided by what Republicans will think of it. Not just because they’re morally bankrupt, but because it is a pointless exercise. This is the principle that the bothsiderist media always follows - somehow, the most important thing is what a few conservative white people, and by extension the politicians that represent them, think about it. It’s one of the founding principles of America. But in the 21st century, it becomes farcical, because these people no longer share the same reality as us. They live in the FOX news cinematic universe, and thus actions in our reality have no bearing on what happens in theirs. So not only is it morally wrong to try to cater to their whims, but it is pointless, as what happens in this universe does not necessarily happen in theirs.

The court disclosure unleashed a whirlwind of speculation in Washington. The Democrat Adam Schiff, the chair of the House of Representatives’ intelligence committee, told the MSNBC network: “People shouldn’t presume - and there may be a tendency to leap to the - that this may involve some of the personalities that have been very much in the news and are worried about their criminal liability.

“It may be someone that we’ve never heard of that wants a pardon and is well-heeled and therefore in a position to make a sizeable contribution. So it doesn’t have to be any of the parties that we think that may want a pardon: the [Paul] Manaforts, the Giulianis and others. It could be someone completely different but, at the end of the day, someone in that chain has to be close enough to the White House where they could conceivably deliver on the official act of pardon if the bribe were paid.”

Scotland punches above its weight in terms of science and education in the world. We’ve always been the poor cousin in terms of the Union with the road to riches and glory normally being the high road to England — even famous Scots like James Watt made their money from English commerce (Matthew Boulton, the engineer who made the steam engines Watt had invented was from central England). We’ve got several world-class Universities, some of them among the oldest colleges of higher learning of their type in the world (St. Andrews for example, established 1413). Edinburgh University has had 19 Nobel Laureates as researchers, alumni etc.

Because of that and a few odd peculiarities such as a national Church that put an emphasis on education of the young in centuries past, there’s always been an emphasis on schooling up here. It’s a big thing in the current stramash that’s going on that the Scottish schools are 100% attendance, no on-line or part-time option with the Government saying they’ll shut everything else down to keep infection rates low enough that the schools stay open. That probably resulted from the disaster in the summer with postponed and cancelled examinations. Children were given aggregated and estimated scores which affected their graduation and expected future college entry prospects and this got the Government in really hot water.

Thinking about the loss of the Arecibo Telescope, I was reminded of the cold open for the X-Files episode “Little Green Men”, which was damn near perfect.

Little green men (The X-Files)

Only thing this wannabe director would’ve done is

- begin with a fade-in on aerial footage of Arecibo
- eliminated the voiceover (no offense to David Duchovny)
- the rest would largely be the same

I loved that cold open because the implication was so brilliant - just imagine, if you can, an incoming transmission…and the signal isn’t some static or radio wave pulse, but rather, playback from one of the Voyager probes golden discs. That sent a genuine chill down my spine.

I really am a little surprised … that there hadn’t been at least some consultation. Even the way the Times reports news is fubar. Trump considering pardons for his crooked kids, Jared, and Rudy is below the fold, along with the pay for pardons scheme.

Had either of these stories been about a Democrat, it would have been screaming from the top of the paper no matter what else in the world was going on - in 30 point headline.

Here? Buried below the fold. That’s why the Times continues to do everyone a grave disservice. By their own editorial choices, they’re diminishing the impact of stories that show how thoroughly corrupt and criminal Trumpworld is. Even on their way out, they’re criming and scheming.

I’m not big on in-house Manchin-bashing.

Unfortunately, we need him right now, especially if Georgia goes the right way in a month’s time. Is he the Democrat I’d want representing us in New York? Of course not. His Kavanaugh vote sucked. But he went the right way on Amy Coney Barrett, and on balance he’s been there for the party most of the times it’s mattered.

The reality is, he’s done something MJ Hegar and Jaime Harrison and Amy McGrath couldn’t do: he won a Senate seat as a Democrat in a red state. If we’re ever going to get a solid D majority in the Senate, it’s going to mean having some Manchins in the tent. And this pragmatist is OK with that if it gets us where we need to go on the big issues.

Trump: Operation Warp Speed made vaccines happen and available and will get them distributed.

Reality: Operation Warp Speed appears to have enriched Trump cronies, and hasn’t actually led to vaccines developed any faster than if they were developed elsewhere in the world. Trump’s taking credit for a Pfizer vaccine that was developed by a subsidiary in Germany.

The UK just approved a vaccine for distribution before the US. Expect other countries to follow suit in short order.

What we are missing here in the US is transparency on how vaccines will be distributed and the order of priority - from health professionals, those in hospitals/facilities like nursing homes, and then to the general population. Trump’s already threatened to delay distribution to states whose governors aren’t kowtowing to him.

So yeah, Warp Speed turned out to be another grift play and empty promises. It was a slogan and not much more.

Sorry I will knock Trump for most everything he did but not that. The US government provided funding that made the Moderna vaccine possible, and provided billions to support the clinical trials of multiple vaccines. While Pfizer didn’t take government money to fund the research and development, the government did very early on sign guarantees for billions of dollars in purchases for any vaccine that reached approval for them.

Those government guarantees and funding allowed companies to begin mass production in parallel with testing so that once it is approved millions of doses will be ready almost immediately. Trump threw all his eggs in the vaccine basket, and while it probably cost 10’s of thousands of lives by ignoring all of the other mitigation factors, they absolutely accelerated the vaccine time table.

That’s a genuinely promising vaccine. I’ve had the yellow fever vaccine (granted, it was years ago) with no ill side-effects.

My latest YF vaccination is still current. It doesn’t much matter around here whether people are protected or not, but it would be a nice side benefit in places like Africa. I hope it’s not one of the deep cold storage ones.

It did indeed. Under the Obama administraion

While Pfizer didn’t take government money to fund the research and development, the government did very early on sign guarantees for billions of dollars in purchases for any vaccine that reached approval for them.

As did the EU and other governments.

Hell, even the “operation warp speed” name is a copy of the German Federal government’s “operation Light Speed”. (and BioNtech did take money from Light Speed).

What we are missing here in the US is transparency on how vaccines will be distributed and the order of priority - from health professionals, those in hospitals/facilities like nursing homes, and then to the general population. Trump’s already threatened to delay distribution to states whose governors aren’t kowtowing to him..

I understand that the CDC vaccine distribution group (a standing advisory board) met/is meeting to discuss the initial distribution. That should be transparent…

Yeah, in general, military stuff is usually untouchable in Congress (both Houses, both parties) - I can’t see where many/any Senators are going to want to fuck up a major defense-appropriation bill over a lame-duck President’s insistence on inserting some pet provision in it: and threatening a veto over it, besides.

The difference between now and then is that the deaths are far more widely distributed around the nation instead of concentrated in a handful of states. The failure to prep this summer and fall for the onslaught we’re seeing today is why. The failure to mandate masks and social distancing is why. We’re seeing more cases because people just aren’t following the rules.

That more people aren’t dying is due to the majority of the nation heeding the warnings.

204
Belafon  Dec 2, 2020 • 10:20:36am

In May, I warned in Foreign Affairs that the coronavirus pandemic in rural America would lag behind the pandemic in urban areas and that it would be “slower, steadier, and likely to continue for a longer period of time.” That is what has happened so far. After initial outbreaks in the spring that were mostly clustered around specific industry-related hot spots—including meatpacking plants, nursing homes, and jails—many rural areas are now experiencing widespread community transmission. The virus took longer to reach these areas, but now it is making up for lost time. Although cases are rising across the country, the highest per capita infection rates tend to be in rural areas and small towns. In Ohio, for instance, nine of the 12 counties with the highest per capita incidence of COVID-19 have populations of less than 50,000.

Geography alone does not explain this discrepancy. Rural areas are less likely to have mandated that residents wear masks, and even in those areas that have mask mandates, residents are less likely to comply…

The situation in rural areas is likely to get worse before it gets better. Hospitals in these regions (if there are hospitals at all) are smaller and have fewer resources than metropolitan facilities. As a result, a flood of COVID-19 patients can easily overwhelm them. And with rising infection rates straining the health-care system across the country, rural hospitals may not be able to transfer critically ill patients to larger, more urban ones…

Vaccine distribution also presupposes that people are willing to be vaccinated. But potential COVID-19 vaccines have been highly politicized. Just as President Donald Trump’s promise to roll out a vaccine prior to the election sowed distrust among Democrats, the Biden administration’s likely effort to distribute one early next year could meet with skepticism among Republicans, especially in rural areas where Trump supporters will have heard over and over that Biden and the Democrats “stole” the election. Black Americans in both rural and urban environments may also be suspicious of any new vaccine after years of mistreatment by the medical establishment, even though they are at high risk for severe COVID-19 infections…
