December 21: Jupiter and Saturn appear together, WaPo

While Jupiter and Saturn will be separated on Dec. 21 by 0.1 degrees, or less than a third of the moon’s width, the two planets will nonetheless remain separated by about 450 million miles in space, he said.
Emily Lakdawalla, a freelance space writer, said planetary orbits can be compared to a kind of running track, with the sun in the middle. If Jupiter is running in circles closer to the inside, Saturn is walking at a slower pace farther out.
“Jupiter is lapping Saturn,” she said.
Given the pace of their orbits — Jupiter takes about 12 Earth years to circle the sun compared to Saturn’s 30 — the two actually align in their paths roughly every two decades.
But there’s a catch: Because each track has a slightly different tilt, very close conjunctions like the one set for later this month are rare. The last time Saturn and Jupiter were close enough to create a “double planet” seen from Earth was in March 1226, Brown said.

biden’s popular vote win is now over 7 million

jennifer rubin / wapo

“That margin is bigger than Massachusetts’ entire population; in fact, only 14 states have a population of more than 7 million. Biden’s popular vote margin by percentage (4.4 percent) far surpasses Obama’s 2012 victory over Mitt Romney.”

“Why is it important to emphasize the magnitude of Biden’s victory? Because, far from narrow, it represents the overwhelming verdict of the voters. If there is such a thing as a mandate, Biden has one.”

it’s important because the EC is only one metric and not the only way to measure ‘mandate’. Popular vote is a perfectly valid metric.

- of course if 44k votes changed to Trump in 3 states the EC would have been tied and Trump likely would have won in the house.

- also changing just 1,000,000 votes in 3 states, it could be a blowout

- and if 77k changed in 2016 Clinton would have won.

in the EC we are pretty closely divided
the popular vote has gone narrowly R once, narrowly D once and pretty wide D in 6 elections of 8.

the system is in bad shape when you can win the popular vote by so much and come so close to losing.

We have to figure out how to leverage the large majority that supports our ideas.

Kellyanne Conway acknowledges ‘it looks like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will prevail’ and ‘if there’s anything I can ever do to help … they can count on me.’ 19thnews.org via @19thnews

That’s because she’s probably shopping her resume to the incoming administration, telling them what a high-profile loyal spinner she was. And Facebook is probably putting together a pitch deck bragging about how they brainwashed people for Trump and can do the same for Biden. It’s all just shirts versus skins, right? And then they get confused when their former victims get mad at them.

First challenge will be the stockmarket: it is still humming along on the relief package and the Trump tax cuts.

But it is long overdue for a course correction, and the longer that takes, the bigger the crash that correction is going to turn out to be.

Biden will face the choice of growing more debt to keep it afloat or letting it crash and being pilloried for that…

“The filings from Trump Victory — a fundraising committee managed by Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee — show $1.06 million in new spending at Trump properties in September, October and November. Trump’s own campaign, which files a separate spending report, reported spending another $66,000,” the report states while noting that details — so far — remain sketchy about where the money was specifically spent and for what.

The report goes on to state, “…there were several bills in excess of $100,000 for facility rental and catering.”

Faraday cages for routers

Please do not put your internet router in a Faraday cage. Please do not put your internet router in a Faraday cage.

If you’re reading this, as someone who uses the internet, this may seem obvious. A Faraday cage, after all, blocks electromagnetic radiation and signals from escaping. Putting one around your router would, by very similar physics, prevent those same radio waves that carry your internet from reaching your devices.

w/r/t this one

we have to fight the war in front of us, not the one we wish we had

and that means recognizing that ‘the other side’ is the virus plus the magats and the anti-vaxxers

your number one objective is to keep you and your own people alive.
so in this circumstance, your first job is to fight the micro war

get the vaccine as soon as you can. continue to protect yourselves with mask, distance, and hand washing.
stay vigilant and do not let your guard down. this will be for a long time.
things don’t go ‘back to normal’ just because you got the shot. it’s more complicated.

the macro war - getting enough of everyone else vaccinated / herd immunity is a secondary problem, made secondary by those people. and it will take much much longer.

we must recognize and accept that there are two fronts
keep them separated in your mind for sanity and in your strategic thinking for better success.

Former Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz was fired from the megachurch amid “narcissistic” and “manipulating” behavior — as well as more than one “significant” affair, its founder claimed in alleged leaked audio published by Page Six.

Lentz, 42, was ousted from Hillsong in early November after 20 years, and later admitted to being unfaithful to his wife, Laura, whom he married in 2003 and with whom he shares three children.

At the time of his termination, Hillsong founder Brian Houston publicly cited “moral failures.” In the newly leaked audio, Houston alleged that Lentz was unfaithful several times, according to Page Six. Reps for Hillsong and Lentz did not immediately return PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

“When we talk about an affair, these issues were more than one affair. They were significant,” a man reported to be Houston said. “And at least some bad moral behavior had gone back historically, but not necessarily those affairs

Well, there certainly is one way to “encourage” these idiots to get vaccinated: Make it part of retaining their jobs. The federal gov’t can’t outright order private businesses to force their employees to get vaccinated, but they can make it a requirement that all companies that do business with the federal gov’t certify 100% vaccination of their workforce. If necessary, justify it as a matter of “national security,” that having federal employees (particularly soldiers/LEO) interacting with vendors who are potentially infected endangers the federal workforce as a whole and its ability to carry out its duties.

As for the states, make it a requirement for businesses to remain open that their workers be vaccinated. Classify it as a “health emergency” or whatever they choose, but say that in order for businesses to remain open during this pandemic, they must be able to show that their workers are vaccinated and thus not a danger to the public. If a business owner refuses, then treat it the same as if you found the place full of vermin: Shut it down, chain the doors, and fine the owner for failure to keep his business up to code.

A Cranky One  Dec 4, 2020 • 3:39:01pm

Last weekend I made a rare trip out to the grocery store. It was very windy and the souvenir baseball cap from Arecibo observatory I was wearing blew off. As I was chasing it in the parking lot, some idiot served and ran it over on purpose. I was pissed. Then to hear that the observatory had collapsed was tragic.

I am bummed. It would make me Cranky if I wasn’t already.

White House staffers at all levels are plotting their departures as a growing number of aides to President Trump are abandoning his quest to overturn the 2020 election results — some in frustration with the building they are leaving behind,” CNN reports.

Said one official: “I think people are moving on because they have families or livelihoods to support. That, and the place is becoming more toxic by the day … people turning on each other, trying to settle scores while they can,”

“Abandoning his quest to overturn

Doesn’t that mean he lost?

Judge fully restored DACA immediately

Thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children are immediately eligible to apply for an Obama-era program that grants them work permits, a federal judge in New York ruled Friday,” the Washington Post reports.

“U.S. District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis in Brooklyn said he was fully restoring the eight-year-old Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program to the days before the Trump administration tried to end it in September 2017. He ordered the Department of Homeland Security to post a public notice by Monday to accept first-time applications and ensure that work permits are valid for two years.”

The driver may have really attempted to “straddle” the cap but missed. Hard to figure winds. I did that once trying to miss a tumbleweed. Scratched the hell outa my fender.
P.S. I wasn’t trying to straddle it, just miss it. No luck.

Well I can look at this in two ways.

1. Yeah the idiot who ran it over was an ass who deserves to get his/hers car keyed
just to equalize the karma or

2. They did me a favor if after flattening it, the wind could no longer blow it away from

A little over a year ago, I was in a rental car outside Fort Worth and suddenly noticed a tire dead ahead of me in my lane. (And the disabled truck off to the side)

Tried to straddle it and more or less did, but the clearance on the rental car wasn’t very high and it ripped the shit out of the heat shield under the front of the car.

The work colleague I was with returned the car and the rental company called me up to say they’d seen the damage… but then they bungled the paperwork at their end somehow and in the end I never got charged.

Based on the foregoing,

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED denying the request to continue the hearing and permit

The Court finds no just reason for delay and enters this partial final judgment under Ariz. R. Civ. P. 54(b). The Court makes this finding for purposes of permitting an immediate appeal to the Arizona Supreme Court.

There are some real blockheads on the Arizona Supreme Court so we’ll see how they handle this.

It’s just like the flu.

That’s what Trump said. That’s what the GOP said.

Now Americans are dying at a rate of a person every 30 seconds (or less). GOP are enabling mass murder and death on a scale not seen before in this nation, and the media yawns over their active direction of this decimation.

270,000+ Americans. 3,000+ dying a day. Every fucking day now. 60,000+ a month. That means we’ll be at 450,000+ by February.

Why? Who benefits from this? A wrecked economy and shattered lives, and the GOP does nothing except block relief and refuses to mandate masks/social distancing that can prevent further infection and spread.

Something I came up with when I was fuming about the potential of having to confront my parents over Thanksgiving:

“It’s just the flu.”

14 million Americans have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 9 months, but sure. It’s just the flu.
Every day, almost a 9/11’s worth of Americans dies, choking on a respirator in a hospital, due to COVID-19. But it’s just the flu.
So far, more Americans have COVID-19 listed as a contributing cause on their death certificate than Axis weapons in World War II. But it’s just the flu.
In the time it took me to write this post, TWO MORE PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM COVID-19 IN AMERICA! But it’s just the flu!
[Deep sigh.]
There’s a real possibility that if it’s not taken seriously, in one or two weeks, I’ll be doing Zoom visits with you in a hospital bed. But it’s just the flu.
