AUDIO: Republican-appointed judge tears into Sidney Powell
Judge: “Finally, in their complaint, the plaintiffs essentially ask the court for perhaps the most extraordinary relief ever sought in any federal court in connection with an election and they want this court to substitute its judgment for that of 2.5 million Georgia voters who voted for Joe Biden, and this I am unwilling to do.”

Okay, two things Ted:
1) Section 230 does not contain *any* limits on how web services moderate content. You may wish it did, but it doesn’t.
2) If you repealed Section 230 protections, tech platforms would have a GREATER incentive to moderate content, not less. https://t.co/6kjqpIGohG— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) December 7, 2020
During the 2016 campaign, one organization (don’t recall which) rated candidates by their honesty: Trump lied the most but a close second was Ted Cruz.
Ted knows better but has observed how someone who lies even more was successful in conquering the GOP base; he’s just trying to up his game. He understands 230, but the truth has always been irrelevant to him; winning is all that matters and the GOP base wants candidates who promote the lies that comfort them and justify their racism.

To try to appease Trump, Kemp said thinks their should be a signature verification audit, which is something that can’t be done as voters sign the envelope and once the signature is verified the ballot and envelope are separated.
There is a sense developing within Donald Trump’s legal team and what remains of his campaign staff that their efforts to overturn or delay the results of the election are coming to an end,” CNN reports.“Following the news of Rudy Giuliani’s coronavirus hospitalization, staffers only speculated further that it’s a matter of time before their legal efforts come to a halt completely. “

The media should consider a simple approach to interviewing a Republican official or candidate. First ask, “Do you recognize Joe Biden won and that there is zero evidence of fraud that could have changed the result?” If the answer is no, inform the audience this is delusional and send the guest home. If the official does recognize the election results and acknowledges that refusing to accept the election results is undemocratic and anti-American, press him to justify why he can still support candidates that engage in such deplorable conduct. And do not let up.

Compared to full reopening, capping at 20% of the maximum occupancy in Chicago reduces the number of new infections by more than 80%, while only losing 42% of overall visits.

Basically, a huge part of battling covid is not shutting down per se, but strictly limiting the numbers present at any potential superspreader event. That is, a superspreader event infects 10 instead of dozens, if only a few people are around.
Figure 2 is for Chicago, and from the caption:
An yes, don’t eat at full service restaurants. I have only eaten/drank around people only outdoors. Over Thanksgiving I saw a lot of “outside” tents in Ohio, but with plastic walls. Nope, gonna shiver outside thank you very much. Or go back home to Birmingham.
Also, minorities are hit hardest not because of genetic reasons, but reasons related to mobility (are they free to avoid crowds in their lives).

I don’t get the latest restrictions in CA. You can go shopping indoors (limited number of people and masked) but you can’t go next door to your neighbors and have 4 people sit outside 6 feet apart, with masks on.
I understand what they’re trying to do, but it strikes me that being that draconian won’t help, and will encourage people to just say to hell with it and go indoors so no one can see them socializing.

Unfortunately…
The office said it was submitting its report to Trump for “appropriate disciplinary action.” But it remains uncertain whether such action will come.
In recent years, several high-profile members of the Trump administration — including White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and former White House social media director Dan Scavino — have been reprimanded by the OSC for violating the Hatch Act.
In Conway’s case, Trump said last year he would not take disciplinary action over the repeated violations, defending Conway as “loyal” and “a tremendous spokeswoman.”
good thing it was just the Hatch Act and not some actual, you know, felony
re: #89 KGxvi
Depends on the statute of limitations, and whether Trump will issue everyone in his administration pardons for violations of the Hatch Act.
he’ll be the first president to issue pardons to everyone in his administration
The Hatch Act needs to have some hefty fines and sanctions attached.

I see Ohio is reminding Black America that they do not have 2nd Amendment rights.
Police In Ohio Say Slain Black Man Brandished A Gun; Family Says He Held A Sandwich
Authorities in Ohio have identified a long-time Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy as the law enforcement officer who shot and killed a Black man in Columbus last Friday.
Law enforcement said the man was waving a gun. His family said he was carrying a sandwich.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy who fired the shots, Jason Meade, a 17-year veteran of the force, was assigned full-time to the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force at the time of the incident.
The task force had wrapped up an unsuccessful search for “violent suspects,” according to police investigators, when the shooting took place.
The man killed, 23-year-old Casey Goodson, was not an object of the search, nor was he wanted by law enforcement prior to the incident, according to police.
Family members said Goodson was shot three times in the back. An autopsy will be conducted by the Franklin County Coroner, according to investigators.
Columbus Police are leading the investigation of the incident, which occurred within its jurisdiction but did not involve police. As of Sunday afternoon, roughly 48 hours after the shooting, Meade had still not been interviewed by investigators.
And you know damn well the Pig will walk for this murder.

If I was president, I’d turn it into a swimming pool. (which there used to be one, where the bowling alley is now.)
Actually, if I were president and I asked for a swimming pool, they’d probably point me towards the one in the capitol, for Senators and House members. And I’d try very hard to hide my smirk when I insist it have women-only hours scheduled to suit my convenience. Then we’d have naked women-only leadership meetings in the sauna; the majority and minority leaders, the party whips, all those positions would have to go to women if that party wants to be included in the negotiations.

First off, it’s like a high end golf, sailing club where I could have met doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. As a 20 year old that might have interested me. Maybe. But now that I’m a curling fanatic, thanks to insomnia during the 2014 Olympics, watching all the games at 2:00 am, the Canadian men’s and women’s teams take the gold, I was hooked and so bummed that I had the chance and blew it.

re: #88 austin_blue
This is a 15-minute piece of contemplative semi-holiday music performed by She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO) on her Celtic lever harp for one of her small symphonies. The last piece, the Variations, was written for Tournier, who was SWMBO’s teacher’s teacher (Eileen Malone) at the Eastman School.
The big ass harp in the still shots in the first piece is her regular concert harp, a Salvi which sounds like a cannon at the bottom and an angel at the top. It’s also a pain in the ass, weighs 100 lbs., and cost $30,000.
Hope you enjoy.

From working in a bank, I can tell you that it’s not a boneheaded idea. Traders are ALWAYS looking for new markets. They’ll make s market in ANYTHING.
That aside, I think trading commodities like water is, as I said on Twitter, evil and satanic. It also reminds me of Revelation 6:6:
“Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, ‘Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!’”
which appears to be talking symbolically about trading in necessary goods.

Zeynep Tufekci has an article in the Atlantic that describes the seriousness of the situation:
Much debate has ensued about what exactly to call whatever Trump is attempting right now, and about how worried we should be. It’s true, the whole thing seems ludicrous—the incoherent lawsuits, the late-night champagne given to official election canvassers in Trump hotels, the tweets riddled with grammatical errors and weird capitalization. Trump has been broadly acknowledged as “norm shattering” and some have argued that this is just more of his usual bluster, while others have pointed out terminological issues with calling his endeavors a coup. Coup may not quite capture what we’re witnessing in the United States right now, but there’s also a danger here: Punditry can tend to focus too much on decorum and terminology, like the overachieving students so many of us once were, conflating the ridiculous with the unserious. The incoherence and incompetence of the attempt do not change its nature, however, nor do those traits allow us to dismiss it or ignore it until it finally fails on account of that incompetence.
[…]
We’re being tested, and we’re failing. The next attempt to steal an election may involve a closer election and smarter lawsuits. Imagine the same playbook executed with better decorum, a president exerting pressure that is less crass and issuing tweets that are more polite. If most Republican officials are failing to police this ham-handed attempt at a power grab, how many would resist a smoother, less grossly embarrassing effort?
[…]
In Turkey, the leader of the 1980 coup, the one that my mom had been warned about, was Kenan Evren. He was a military-academy classmate of many who had taken part in a particularly incompetent coup attempt in the early ’60s that failed spectacularly—its missteps included tanks being accidentally sent to a neighborhood in Ankara at the wrong time. But the coup Evren led many years later was anything but farcical: Hundreds of thousands were detained, and more than 100 were tortured to death. A new, restrictive constitution was enacted, under repressive conditions. The failure of multiple attempted coups in the ’60s was not a reason to dismiss the risk of a subsequent coup—but a warning that such an effort might well succeed in more competent hands.
[…]
we should react to the frightening substance of what we’re facing, even if we also believe that the crassness and the incompetence of this attempt may well doom it this time. If the Republican Party, itself entrenching minority rule on many levels, won’t stand up to Trump’s attempt to steal an election through lying and intimidation with the fury the situation demands; if the Democratic Party’s leadership remains solely focused on preparing for the presidency of Joe Biden rather than talking openly about what’s happening; and if ordinary citizens feel bewildered and disempowered, we may settle the terminological debate in the worst possible way: by accruing enough experience with illegitimate power grabs to evolve a more fine-grained vocabulary.

I don’t like this part of the nomination:
Austin’s candidacy has been met with resistance from some national security experts, who noted that he has not been out of the military for the required seven years and would need a waiver from Congress to become secretary of Defense. If chosen, he would be the second Pentagon chief in just four years to require such a waiver, after President Donald Trump chose Jim Mattis, another former Central Command chief, for his first defense secretary in 2017.

My jackass Republican Governor doing what jackass Republicans do:
MS governor plans Christmas parties despite his own orders and record COVID-19 cases
Gov. Tate Reeves has planned several Christmas parties at the Governor’s Mansion, despite warnings from state health experts against such gatherings amid the pandemic, and the governor’s own orders limiting the number of people allowed at such events in Hinds County.
This follows a fundraiser held by a hospital executive on the Coast last week for Reeves for more than 20 people, despite Reeves’ orders limiting gatherings in Harrison County because of record COVID-19 outbreaks.
Statewide and districtwide elected officials received an invite for a governor’s Christmas party for Wednesday evening, several officials told Mississippi Today. The governor has also invited lawmakers to separate parties for the House and Senate next week, several lawmakers said.
As COVID-19 statistics continue to set new records almost by the day, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs and the health department have warned Mississippians to avoid holiday gatherings beyond closest family and to avoid any groups beyond school, work or “essential gatherings.” Dobbs called the holidays a “perfect storm” for “explosive outbreaks” of COVID-19 and warned, “We will see deaths, absolutely, around holiday gatherings.” Health officials warn that Mississippi hospitals are overloaded with patients as pandemic cases spike to record levels.
Reeves has in recent weeks issued executive orders for 54 of Mississippi’s 82 counties that require wearing of masks in public and limiting gatherings to no more than 10 indoors and no more than 50 outdoors where social distancing is not possible.

…New: US District Judge in DC says Trump administration exceeded its authority in its TikTok restrictions, calling actions “arbitrary and capricious.” Judge orders that Commerce Department’s ban be blocked “in full.”….
So a judge ruled that Trump’s decision to destroy a company because teenagers used the platform to interfere peacefully with a political rally is not a thoughtful and appropriate federal policy. Huh. Who would have guessed? Actually, there are probably Trump appointed judges who might have agreed completely with Trump.

So Pfizer being an American company and the vaccine being produced in Michigan if I recall correctly, would those other commitments mean a thing if whoever is president(either Trump now or Biden later) invokes the defense production act?

Yep, they coopted the Zia symbol. It’s a gorgeous flag, but it wasn’t the state’s symbol to use.
re: #228 dangerman
you need some stones to play that game
In 1970, my high school tried to introduce curling to the general phys ed program because we had a new indoor ice rink. They tried to get around not purchasing stones by filling up coffee cans with concrete with an imbedded bent metal rod for the handle. You had to set them down perfectly flat or else the rim of the can would gouge into the ice and they’d just tip over. It was pretty sad and I think we only did it one day. You couldn’t learn any curling skills with that equipment anyway.

SCOOP: States estimated vaccine supplies with outdated figures, HHS says
From the Bloomberg article:
Quantities estimated during planning exercises were labeled with disclaimers that they were for planning purposes only, the spokesperson said.
Because why would you need accurate data for planning?//
I expect we’re going to find out this is due to the administrations penchant for spreading bullshit happy talk.
