A Powerful Tiny Desk (Home) Concert From Austin: Black Pumas

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Dec. 7, 2020 | Felix Contreras — The Austin-based rock band Black Pumas is having a good 2020. The group, led by singer Eric Burton and guitarist Adrian Quesada, was just nominated for three Grammys, including album of the year for Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition), and both record of the year and best American roots performance for the track “Colors.” The band’s turn behind a tiny desk (and chair) shows why its debut album — now more than a year old — is receiving so much recognition right now.

Black Pumas’ gritty, retro-soul groove is on full display, while the intensity level builds gradually throughout this four-song set. It’s clear why the band’s live shows have won over fans. From the opening strains of “Red Rover,” Burton digs deep and by the time we get to the ballad “OCT 33,” he’s burning with old-school soul heartbreak.

Quesada’s guitar is the perfect call-and-response foil, while the entire band — complete with two powerful back-up singers — calls to mind soul classics, but with a groovy new sheen.

I’ve seen some of Black Pumas’ shows in recent years and the band gets better every time out. The power of this Tiny Desk (home) concert shows that they always bring it, no matter the size of the audience.

The Black Pumas are the best new band I found out about in 2020, they are a goto favorite whenever things get bad.

I’m almost 100% sure he’s just trying to make it so that:

A. Joe Biden wins by less EV than he did in 2016 instead of equal or more.
B. Help give more life to the conspiracy theory so he can have a guaranteed grift for years.

Thanksgiving isn’t helping, but case numbers began their jump around the beginning of November, and I’m not seeing much of a change since then (to the continuing exponential increase, I mean).

Did Lou Dobbs just tell Stephen Miller that Republicans should hire me for $500,000,000 (yes, 1/2 billion dollars) so they can start winning in court?

Wait — Lou Dobbs is not an attorney — so how is he going to win cases? Use the money to bribe the judges or blackmail them? What does he even know about presenting an election case? Or would he be using the money to bribe legislators to ignore the election results?

Re: the nomination of Austin for Secretary of Defense

A NYTimes opinion piece includes the following paragraph:

General Austin is a capable and respected former commander of Central Command, but he retired only in 2016. That’s not long enough: A civilian — not a recently retired general — should lead the Pentagon.

The legislators who negotiated the original security act believed only unique circumstances might dictate that a newly retired general or admiral should lead the Defense Department. They codified into law a 10-year cooling-off period (which Congress in 2008 reduced to seven years).

He was the Test Pilot’s idea of what a Test Pilot should be. Ice in his veins.

Back in WWII, his Jug, (a P-47) got the shit shot out of it over Europe.

He was nursing it back to England when a bunch of 7.96 Mauser shells started tearing his cockpit to pieces. German fighter flashes by. Chuck has just had most of his instruments shot out, but thanks to his armored seat, he’s not dead. Next thing he knows, he’s taking fire from the other side of his plane. He leaned back into the seat as the German fighter pulls up next to him, then peeked around the armor at the German pilot, who is grinning.

The German pilot gives the hand sign to knock it off. He’s out of ammo. He salutes Chuck and pulls away. Chuck makes it back to England.

Quite a guy.

The most perfect hero has left us, because of course. Chuck Yeager has died.

2020 has fucked us again.

I’m really sad about this one.

Chuck has beaten the odds one last time, passing from natural causes at a grand old age. Along with my uncle Andrew (a double ace in the Pacific war) Chuck Yeager inspired me to become a pilot.

Rest in peace, General Yeager.

Sounds like our brother — but without the “Satan-worshipping pedophile” part. He’s been so confident for years that the Clintons are going to be arrested for all their crimes — involving their criminal dealings with Russia and China, their murder of Seth Rich, and their accepting bribes from foreign nations through their foundation. And of course, let’s not forget spying on the Trump campaign in 2016

Opener for the next 007 film.
Thieves steal radio equipment from the Russian Nuclear Command plane. The Doomsday plane.

Oh, wait that really happened.

On our long-running (26 years!) IRC channel, we have a woman who lives in Christchurch. She started talking today about how the killer got his weapon. “The firearms license process is what scares me.” She usually gripes about government regulations, but this was not that. In fact, it was a rant about how the NZ government’s regulations were trivial to bypass.

Basically, in order to get a license in New Zealand, you have to be “landed” (i.e., have some sort of permanent residency) for 15 days before you can apply. The Christchurch killer had just come over from Australia and had that status. Then you can pay your fee for your license, and put down two people as “referees” (meaning I guess they vouch for you). In the case of the killer, he put down his sister and an online gaming friend. The latter was aware of his racism and Islamophobia but didn’t disclose it.

It was also revealed that the gaming friend was known to police and NZ Customs having been caught trying to import a knuckleduster knife - considered an offensive weapon - in 2014, and a year later, four firearms parts without the necessary permits. He had been given a verbal warning by police and the items were seized.

(from an article she was quoting)

So yeah, the NZ permitting system has huge holes in it and it scares this otherwise very skeptical of government Kiwi I know.

The nominee should look Graham in the face at the confirmation hearing when he’s questioned and declare “I will treat investigating the previous administration with every bit of seriousness as this body has treated investigating the Obama administration for ‘crimes’ it alleges yet cannot prove.”

The responses are priceless.

Have you contacted an Australian? They’ll know what to do.

It’s its name Seymour? Whatever you do, don’t feed it!

So he missed hannity’s retraction on the Seth Rich bullshit?

Did Hannity actually retract? There was some show in which he said he would not be discussing this story for now out of respect for the family’s wishes. But did he himself ever say the story was untrue or that there was no evidence to support the story?
