Joe Biden’s gaffe o’ the day was saying “one horse pony” when he meant “one trick pony,” which immediately made me think of this great weird song by Kurt Vile.

From Kurt Vile’s new album, ‘Bottle It In’ out now via Matador Records. Stream & buy the album here: http://smarturl.it/bottleitin

one trick ponies

loved you all a long, long while
looked down into a deep, dark well
called all your names
they echoed down for miles and miles
and all that other mystical, well, never-you-mind

loved them all through many a lifetime
some are gone but some still strong
some are weird as hell but we love ‘em
some are one trick ponies but we embrace ‘em
cuz i’ve always had a soft spot for repetition

loved you all a long, long while
looked down into a deep, dark well
called all your names
they echoed down for miles and miles
and all that other mystical, well, never-you-mind

loved you all a long, long time
looked long into the length of a tunnel
called all your names
and we was tripping out cuz we needed a way out
and all them other crystalline mystic rationalizations

loved them all right down to my soul
looked well into the depth of a hole
pondered perpetual motion in the echo
just like the song if the repeats were long

loved you all a long, long while
looked down into a deep, dark well
called all your names
they echoed down for miles and miles
and all that other mystical, well, never-you-mind

loved you all a long, long while
and i’d give my left—nevermind—for one big synchronized smile
some are one trick ponies but so am i
round ‘em up into a mixed bag bundle of love now

loved them all a long, long tick
and it’s four, five, six
prevent your schtick
throw them at the wall in a mixed bag and see if they stick
then give ‘em a glass of water
give ‘em a cherry pie
loved you all a long, long while
looked down into a deep, dark well
called all your names
they echoed down for miles and miles
and all that other mystical, well, never-you-mind

I noticed that a lot of people are wondering where the fuck Trump’s video rant and sort-of veto threat came from considering his own team helped put the deal together. It’s because it’s damn near verbatim from Limbaugh’s show today.

Trump’s just saying something that makes him look good…or more precisely, that avoids blame at a moment when the government he presides over is sticky with shame and failure—but it’s not his money, nor will he do the work to get that $2K—while making people he has a grudge against look worse.

I prefer to use the printed term “Donald Trump Socialist Giveaway” on each check for exactly what this is in no uncertain terms.

For those receiving and cashing the checks it will show them to their faces that they are the beneficiaries of Socialism in its rawest form. They will have no excuse to deny that they are depending on Socialism and it is Republicans that are fighting against them receiving their money. A little bit of honesty presented in their face might prove to be an eye-opener. Then again, maybe not.

My brother called to rant about Mom getting a wild hair about wanting to vacuum the living room and then falling because, well, guess what, the vacuum is out of order, so she tried to start using a floor sweeper and she fell. I asked him if I needed to come over there and read mom the riot act. He said no.

Then he went off on a rant about $10 million in gender studies in Afghanistan tucked into the appropriations bill. I don’t know where it came from and I’m not going to check where but MAN it was a rant. He finally basically hung up on me after I pointed out that a charter school had disgorged $10 million to one of its principals after getting a PPP loan. I’m not so sure he hung up because he was mad at me or rather because he realized he’d worked himself into a froth and shouldn’t have done that. I have been staying away from politics, so he brought this quite upon himself.

A few talking points about foreign aid in the bill are getting heavy play in conservative circles since they hate foreign aid and it’s a useful distraction to blame that on why the citizens at large are only getting $600 instead of the machinations of McConnell and crew with the rich getting all those nice loans, etc. etc.

Just guessing, but I’d say it’s probably far cheaper to invest in empowering women to vote and open businesses than to fight anti-terror wars.

“…The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) works with the Government of Pakistan and development partners to address gender inequality, which affects women of all ethnic groups and socio-economic strata.

Our programs work to improve women’s access to economic opportunities, increase girls’ access to education, improve maternal and child health, combat gender-based violence, and increase women’s political and civic participation in Pakistan. All of our efforts across sectors incorporate the cross-cutting theme of gender equality. This work helps promote a more prosperous, stable, and inclusive society in Pakistan, which helps further international peace and security.”

Republicans have always given away money and told the recipients they deserved it, because they were the right kind of people.

They have then told their constituents that giving away money to the wrong kind of people—mostly this means black people, but really the point is that everyone can be re-assigned to “bad person” as necessary—is a crime.

It’s never been as simple as “no money for all” or any of the purported free market principles they talk about. It’s always been doing a socialism inflected with nationalist sentiment.

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Dec 22, 2020 • 8:08:53pm

hi

My wife and I are back from the hospital in Scottsbluff. Seeing news trucks, National Guard, police and such was disconcerting until we found out why.

The Moderna vaccine has arrived in the Nebraska Panhandle, and distribution started today at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff and Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport. The Nebraska National Guard is on hand in both Scottsbluff and Bridgeport to assist in distribution and administration of the vaccine (along with security).

Physicians, nurses, and staff such as janitors and cooks were first in line at both hospitals to receive their first doses of the vaccine today.

The state health department determined the Panhandle would get the Moderna vaccine because of the less-stringent storage requirements making it easier to store in rural hospitals. The Pfizer vaccine will not be sent here, as we have no way to store it and electricity can be sketchy in Winter.

Vaccines will be distributed to “group 1a” first (physicians, nurses, all other hospital staff, patients, and those in nursing homes). Group “1b” are police, EMT, fire departments, teachers, utility workers, transportation workers, agriculture workers, and retail workers in groceries and butcher shops. Group “1c” is over 65 in age, those with certain disabilities or conditions which increase risk, those who live in group settings (such as students in dorms). After that, others will receive the vaccine as it becomes available.

Panhandle Public Health District will telephone each person in the Panhandle as the vaccine becomes available for them (or send someone to their house to tell them).

The current weekly positivity rate here is 40.2%. Fourteen more cases were reported today, bringing the total to 7,354.

Probably an under reported story: Fox News ratings are way way down.

Just looked at the Monday cable finals, and the various Fox evening shows are down dramatically in the key demo, compared to before the election.

E.g., Hannity finished 50th for the night.

The old folk are still watching, but the 18-49 year olds have moved on to other things.

Probably an under reported story: Fox News ratings are way way down.

Just looked at the Monday cable finals, and the various Fox evening shows are down dramatically in the key demo, compared to before the election.

E.g., Hannity finished 50th for the night.

Occam’s Razor says that this sudden call for $2,000 checks is purely Trump trying to screw with Mitch. It’s pure “dominance politics,” putting Yertle on the spot and making him responsible for the failure to pass the bill and thus failure to get those checks out in time to save Loeffler and Purdue’s asses at the polls.

If I thought the man was capable of complicated planning, I’d almost think a bit of sheer brilliance to this one. Embracing the larger checks blows up whatever deal-making Mitch has made with his own caucus to get this bill through, as they’ll demand more for the price of agreeing to those checks, which Pelosi and Schumer will immediately reject absent any further concessions on Mitch’s part. And he can’t even blame the Dems when he rejects those larger checks because Trump’s the guy insisting he’ll blow up the bill without them.

But I don’t think the man’s that clever, so I can only assume that somebody put the idea in his head.

Simple: Bitterness over Mitch acknowledging reality (i.e. Biden as president-elect) rather than embracing the idea of waging a last, futile effort to overturn the election in the halls of Congress. That it would blow up this relief bill, a bill that most MAGAts hate because they think the “solution” to the economic crisis is forcing workers to show up or face termination, is just a nice little bonus in his eyes.

Now, as part of Sesame Workshop’s Play to Learn humanitarian program, the show has partnered with nonprofit organizations to feature new characters to shed light on the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis.

Sesame Workshop announced the addition of two new muppets to the cast of Sesame Street on Dec.16. The characters, 6-year-old twins Noor and Aziz, live in the largest refugee camp in the world, located in Bangladesh. According to the news release, Cox’s Bazar, the camp where the children live, is home to more than 800,000 Rohingya refugees. Created to support children and families impacted by the Rohingya refugee crisis, the muppets are Rohingya Muslims who escaped ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. The muppet twins will appear alongside popular muppets, including Elmo, in educational programs about math, science, health, and other topics in the camps. They are expected to appear in all 150 countries that broadcast Sesame Street.

Good news, but my two bits is that they should put all retail workers in the group 1b list. Their risk from customers is the same. The employees don’t have much choice to be there if they want to eat and pay rent, and they can’t work from home.

I think the idea is that other types of retail outlets can be shut (such as restaurants or department stores) whereas groceries and butchers cannot.

The state can change these priorities as the rollout of the vaccines continue.

Population growth has halted in Nebraska.

Nebraska’s slow but steady population growth pulled back from its normal walking pace in 2020.

A demographic researcher said Nebraska’s low level of growth reflects some of the state’s root challenges in growing its population, not the coronavirus pandemic.

Population estimates released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau indicated that Nebraska grew by just under 5,000 people from July 2019 to July 2020 — or just about one-quarter of 1%.

David Drozd, research coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research, said the growth was the smallest gain and the lowest rate of increase since 1989 for Nebraska.

Drozd attributed the relatively small growth to a slowing of the state’s birth rate and its increasing number of deaths as baby boomers age. Plus, he said, Nebraska isn’t gaining as much population from international immigration and still loses people on net to other states.

Voat — the social media site for people too vile for Reddit — is shutting down (Goes to We Hunted the Mammoth, caution for racist and antisemitic comments lifted from that site).

Some people at Voat say they might invade Parler to argue with them.

Pour one out for the folks on Voat. The so-called “free speech” Reddit clone — designed to appeal to people too hateful for Reddit — has apparently run out of money and will close its virtual doors on Christmas day.

According to site co-founder Justin Chastain, in a weirdly sexually suggestive post on Voat titled “I Can’t Keep It Up,” the site has basically been running on fumes since its big investor pulled support for the site in March. “I personally decided to keep Voat up until after the US election of 2020,” Chastain explained. “I’ve been paying the costs out of pocket but now I’m out of money.”

Chastain has decided to milk the melodrama of the shutdown for all it’s worth.

I will lay Voat upon the cross on December 25th 2020 at 12 noon PST. I have chosen Christmas as the day to do so in honor of the only True thing you will find in this world and that is Jesus Christ, the son of God, and the only way to the Father. I chose 12 noon in honor of the twelve disciples who spread the message of salvation to the world. In this way, my hope is that perhaps 12 people will carry the cross for Freedom of Speech and sacrifice part of their lives for an ideal in the way I did, but hopefully with much more success, glory, and reward.

Wingnuts are going to fuque this “gender programmes” chicken to death, aren’t they?

The amount they are citing, $10 million, to educate girls, promote equal rights, and sponsor entrepreneurial education (I thought these folks liked capitalism) is $32 a head in the county. If you’re looking for “soft power” that encourages a nation to become more open and less dangerous, that seems like a good investment to me. That’s much cheaper than fighting endless wars against partisans.

But pretty much everything a conservative sells is outrage. How dare you give foreign aid (this argument’s been going on as long as I’ve been alive—Israel excepted) when we could:

a) Feed our homeless (they never seem to get around to that)
b) Help our veterans (they never seem to get around to that, either)

It’s almost as if conservatives lie, and that $10 million was really meant to go to some Republican donor. Naw, that couldn’t be it.

Hundreds of USS Ronald Reagan sailors in ‘close contact’ coronavirus quarantine as holidays draw near (Stars & Strips)

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Hundreds of sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan are quarantined after having close contact with others who tested positive for the coronavirus, according to emails between the ship’s leaders.

About 350 Reagan sailors “are in some form of” quarantine at Yokosuka, the carrier’s homeport, according to executive officer Capt. Matthew Ventimiglia, who started an email chain Sunday between the ship’s senior leaders. Some are in isolation because they recently arrived in Japan, according to Ventimiglia’s email.

Stars and Stripes on Tuesday obtained the email chain, which includes messages from Reagan commander Capt. Fred Goldhammer and senior medical officer Capt. George Rice to department heads and leading chief petty officers.

“There has been a man with a bag and a coat walking around, cutting off power to the buildings around here,” a Marine Corps recruiter in Greensboro, North Carolina, told a 911 operator on Dec 14.

“We’re the only section with power still.”

“He’s been cutting off the breakers behind the building,” said a Navy recruiter next door separately told a Guilford Metro 911 operator.

The ominous scene was set just minutes before that same man started firing shots into a recruiting station, where Marine Corps and Navy recruiters worked.

Just after 6:20 p.m., according to 911 reports obtained by Military Times via a records request, the man fired four shots into the building, sparking nearly 10 calls to 911 from people nearby.

“There’s a guy out here shooting at our windows,” a Navy recruiter said at 6:21 p.m. The recruiter, who had barricaded himself in the office, identified the weapon as a 9 mm handgun based off its sound.

Before opening fire, the shooter had gone behind the building and attempted to cut off the recruiting center’s power, according to three 911 calls and a source with direct knowledge of the incident, who spoke with Military Times and asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak to media in an official capacity.

Police later recovered a Glock 43 9 mm pistol from James Alexander Cooper, the suspected shooter, when he was arrested near the scene.

US Population Growth Smallest in at Least 120 Years (Voice of America)

Demographers attribute the shift to Trump’s immigration policies, declining birth rates, and Covid-19.

The state with the largest percentage of loss was New York. The greatest gain was Idaho.

Population growth in the U.S. already was stagnant over the past several years due to immigration restrictions and a dip in fertility, but coronavirus-related deaths exacerbated that lethargic-growth trend, said William Frey, a senior fellow at The Brooking Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program.

“I think it’s a first glimpse of where we may be heading as far as low population growth,” Frey said. “It’s telling you that this is having an impact on population.”

The U.S. population grew by 0.35% from July 2019 to July 2020, an increase of 1.1 million people in a nation whose estimated population in July was more than 329 million residents, according to Census Bureau estimates.

I wanted to take a peek at the vaccination timeline now that the Moderna vaccine is available. Looks like midsummer-ish for significant coverage in the general population. This sounds fine to me. Wish it was faster, but to have a vaccine at all, so soon, is a win.

Dr. Vivek Murthy, President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for surgeon general, poured some cold water on the Trump administration’s rosy vaccine distribution timeline on Sunday.
“I think it’s more realistic to assume that it may be closer to mid-summer or early fall when this vaccine makes its way to the general population. So we want to be optimistic, but we want to be cautious as well,”

Interesting question arises from the Nederlands Bach project: Are top-tier musicians held to a much greater acoustic standard than MP3/cloud can capture and disseminate?
IOW, how much skill and discipline do we waste?

This is part of a generational argument with Son2. He insists I should abandon CDs and not try to restore my ancient hifi system—that the mass-market MP3 route is good enough for (old) ears.

I have a Schneider all-in-one stereo system - turntable, cassette, CD, AM/FM receiver. Extraordinarily good sound for a relatively small system.

This model:

Picked it up on the cheap here; the turntable works, but I think the drive belt is worn out, so I’ll have to figure out how to replace it.

Live music can be quite different than even a recording of the same event.

Many people have never heard live bands or orchestras.

Still, there is an audience, live, for those Bach musicians. Not during the pandemic, but otherwise.

When I want to feel depressed I remember our town in Italy—100K, a World Heritage Site. Most weekends we had to decide which church’s Fri or Sun concert to attend—sometimes a conflicting tradeoff was difficult. Or we could just walk to the XVI Cent villa owned by the ‘suburban’ commune and see what they were doing.

Eclectic Cyborg  Dec 23, 2020 • 6:53:22am

BBC makes a valiant effort, but…

How should you talk to friends and relatives who believe conspiracy theories?

3: Encourage critical thinking

People who believe conspiracy theories often say: “I do my own research.”

The problem is that their research tends to consist of watching fringe YouTube videos, following random people on Facebook, and cherry-picking evidence from biased Twitter accounts.

But the spirit of doubt that pervades the conspiracy-minded internet is actually a key opening for rational thought, says Jovan Byford.

“Many people who believe in conspiracy theories see themselves as healthy sceptics and self-taught researchers into complex issues,” he says. “Present this as something that, in principle, you value and share.

“Your aim is not to make them less curious or sceptical, but to change what they are curious about, or sceptical of.”

That’s what helped Phil from Belfast. He used to be big into 9/11 conspiracies.

“I used to point out the fact that there were various experts who doubted official stories. This was very persuasive to me,” he explains. “Why would these experts lie?”

But then he began applying scepticism not to just “official sources” but also the alternative “experts” that was listening to.

He developed a deeper understanding of the scientific method and scepticism itself. Just because one expert believes something, doesn’t make it true.

“You can find experts and very intelligent people who lend credence to any position,” he says.

“Focus on those who are pushing these ideas, and what they might be getting,” says Claire Wardle. “For instance, financial gain by selling health supplements, or reputational gain in building a following.”

Then I did some digging and found out that in this particular case, participants in the class-action suit have to put up €800 (nearly $1000 at todays bloated exchange rate) to participate.

so basically if this guy can get 1,000 people to sign up for this suit, he has made a million without having to lift a finger…

Oh, you had to ask.

If you don’t understand the legalese, L. Lin Wood has applied to appear on behalf of Carter Page in Delaware superior court. He’s not licensed to practice in Delaware, so the judge had to explicitly allow him to do this. Well, the judge learned of his extracurricular shenanigans, and is now ordering Wood to tell him why he shouldn’t kick him out of his courtroom posthaste.

Can we now impose sanctions and costs to these fucknuts pushing this crap?

You’d think GOPers would be behind any effort to reduce frivolous lawsuits (aka tort reform, immunity, etc.), but it turns out that they’re the ones pushing all of this crap.

This idiotic lawsuit is from the Thomas Moore Society.

Sanction them and take away their licenses. All of them.

Did you read the filing from the City of Detroit going for Section 11 (12??) sanctions against Wood and Powell? It was absolutely brutal.

Thread, thirteen tweets.

Kristol is reliably wrong, though not as much as Dick Morris. But I think that one can infer from his tweets support for my theory about why the DOD refuses to work with the Biden Team: they are planning to involve the military in some shenanigans to retain the WH for Trump and do not want Biden to have any advance warning of their illegal actions. Trump is terrified of what awaits him in NY and will do anything to avoid justice, including destroying our nation. And Trump will issue pardons for all those military personnel/Blackwater contractors who engage in these actions.

I would never take an investigation of the Clintons as an example of anything. The GOP has used any excuse for the past 40 years to investigate the Clintons. They have also refused to investigate trump - so unless it becomes 100% obvious that trump is selling pardons there will be no investigation.

The Biden DOJ and the Pelosi House will have a very different agenda from the GOP harassment of the Clintons.

I’m fairly certain that Biden has eyes and ears inside the Pentagon.

I’m also fairly certain that pardoning a blackwater contractor, one who makes 5x what a real military person makes, and who wantonly killed civilians making the rest of military personnel less safe, infuriated the vast majority of the military. Should trump go down that path, it’s going to end poorly for all of them. Real poorly. Deadly poorly.

I hope you are right. But there are 74 million Americans who have sworn allegiance to the Donald — and some of these are in the military. Trump has also filled senior DOD positions with his lackeys and their loyalty is only to him and not our Constitution.

Went to an Iron Maiden concert when I was about 17….I’d scored seats only about 20 feet away from the stage and failed to comprehend how loud Iron Maiden was going to be (this was when they were on top of the world, back in the mid-1980s).

Went to a George Thorogood concert with my brother in the mid-80. (Syria Mosque for you ‘burghers out there.) Noticed pretty soon that it was *very* loud, and that my brother was wearing ear plugs. Asked him if he had another pair - and he did. First time I wore ear plugs to a concert and I don’t think it affected thing negatively at all. Yeah, you don’t always realize how loud some of the PA systems bands use can be until you end up with this oddly persistent ringing in your ears.

I’ve seen Iron Maiden a few times since then, including a few years back and went with a student (my ex despised heavy metal music and refused to go with me) in August 2008 who was into dubstep, but she thought, “Free concert, what the hell” and she was headbanging mid-show like she’d been a metal fan her entire life, LOL. She later said she’d never seen anything like it and greatly enjoyed it.

The FAA is, shall we say, a bit lax when it comes to these things. Many years ago, a man tied a bunch of helium balloons to a lawn chair and grabbed a pellet gun (apparently to pop the balloons and allow him to descend), and rode it - right into the flight pattern at LAX. When he finally came down, he was arrested - as one would expect - but, to quote the inspector, “We know he broke some part of the Federal Aviation Act, and as soon as we decide which part it is, some type of charge will be filed. If he had a pilot’s license, we’d suspend that, but he doesn’t.”

This case got a bunch of local coverage here, since it happened at La Guardia, and TBH, it sounds more like a mental issue than a “political” one. From most reports, the guy apparently just had a panic attack on the takeoff taxi, and decided to bolt: his girlfriend and dog just followed him out. That said, this is potentially dangerous (though I really hope you can’t open the doors in flight) while they should get the book thrown at them, IMO that book ought to be the DSM….

FBI Says White Supremacists Plotted Attack on U.S. Power Grid

White supremacists plotted to attack power stations in the southeastern U.S., and an Ohio teenager who allegedly shared the plan said he wanted the group to be “operational” on a fast-tracked timeline if President Donald Trump were to lose his re-election bid, the FBI alleges in an affidavit that was mistakenly unsealed.

The teen was in a text group with more than a dozen people in the fall of 2019 when he introduced the idea of saving money to buy a ranch where they could participate in militant training, according to the affidavit, which was filed under seal along with a search warrant application in Wisconsin’s Eastern U.S. District Court in March. The documents were inadvertently unsealed last week before the mistake was discovered and they were quickly sealed again.

For some airplanes. I don’t think it’s universally standard that they have inward-opening doors.

Even for the outward-opening aircraft doors, the construction is such that the pressure differential keeps the door shut. You have had some exceptions which use other mechanisms, usually cargo doors, but there have been bad accidents resulting from when those mechanisms fail, such as UAL 811 and THY 981.
And as I recall, there are other mechanisms for the overwing emergency exists.
And this was on the ground, it takes time before the aircraft becomes pressurized enough to prevent opening of the doors.

Gateau Basque “dough” in the fridge. Interesting that it’s wetter than pastry dough… Has a loose marzipan feel to it.

Pastry cream being made tonight. Assembly and bakeage happens tomorrow.

The only question…to add jam or not.

That looks interesting. I might try it.

Correct. I was responding to the assertion that the pressure differential keeps the doors shut. I knew outward-opening cargo doors were secured against in-flight opening (with the notable accidents you referenced), and I figured that there was some mechanism to relieve pressure on cabin doors that open outwards, but I wasn’t 100% sure that they were secured against being able to be opened at all.

As I recall, most cabin doors of the outward opening varient actually are built so they slide inside, one or both long edges of the door mechanically pressing against the body, the top and bottom mechanically sealed.

Super easy. This is the recipe I’m using (video only, ingredients are in the description). I swapped out 1c of the AP flour for almond flour and would have used almond extract in the dough if I had some, but I just ran out.

re: #274 jimmyvluv4u

Yeah that happened to me at a Metallica show in the early 00s. Ended up on the floor in front of the left speaker and after my friend and I drove home, I shut off the car and he said “are you going to shut off the car?” It was impossible to tell if the engine was running or not. Since then I have invested in some high quality earplugs for all my live shows.

What?

I can’t hear you.

What?

Yeah, that was me after every major rock concert I attended growing up. Metallica/Faith No More/Gn’R was one of the loudest. AC/DC was right behind ‘em. But some of those small venue shows by bands I can’t recall were louder that that b/c arena rock can lessen the db levels. Now? I don’t go a show without earplugs.

Most large airliners pressurize to a cabin altitude of 8,000 feet. Below that altitude, inside and outside air pressure basically stays the same. They start to pressurize the cabin once they’ve climbed to and past that height.

re: #156 Decatur Deb

Only got my chimes rung at Knox a few times. No one wants to believe what 1000 hours in front of Heavy Metal concert speakers has done to a couple generations.

During my years of being front stage and back stage at ABB, Marshall Tucker, Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie, Dixie Dregs, etc, concerts, I always wore foam earplugs.
Figured that if they were good enough for chainsaws, couldn’t hurt for concerts.

They didn’t hinder conversation during concerts, as to do so everyone had to yell face to face anyway.

re: #263 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Heck, attending a Deep Purple concert back in the 1980’s made my ears ring for three days.

Though I suspect most of my hearing damage came from the 5-6 months I spent working in a plant doing injection molding work right after college. Not much ear protection available - and one machine had a set of ear protectors hanging next to it. I started using those pretty quickly around that machine due to the proximity you had to get to the main noise source.*

* - And people there got taunted about being wimps if they used ear plugs and such.

The roadies had all suffered hearing loss well before my time on the scene, so they understood need for ear plugs.
