KC Jones died today, the second of the Celtics’ 60s dream team in the past 6 weeks (Tommy Heinsohn died November 9.) Those Celts were a big part of my growing up years—Sam Jones lived in my hometown and my sister’s then in-laws were really close with KC’s family.

Another coda to the 2020 sucks annals.

Say what you will about Charles Dickens, but this is thoughtworthy…

They were a boy and girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish; but prostrate, too, in their humility. Where graceful youth should have filled their features out, and touched them with its freshest tints, a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds. Where angels might have sat enthroned, devils lurked, and glared out menacing. No change, no degradation, no perversion of humanity, in any grade, through all the mysteries of wonderful creation, has monsters half so horrible and dread.
Scrooge started back, appalled. Having them shown to him in this way, he tried to say they were fine children, but the words choked themselves, rather than be parties to a lie of such enormous magnitude.
“Spirit! are they yours?” Scrooge could say no more.
“They are Man’s,” said the Spirit, looking down upon them. “And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it!” cried the Spirit, stretching out its hand towards the city. “Slander those who tell it ye! Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse! And bide the end!”
— Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol”, 1843.

Yeah, I found WW84 underwhelming as well. Could’ve used another screenplay draft or a bit more polishing before it went into production. Best part of the film was the end - there’s a great mid-credits scene that made me smile and I thought it was a nice touch. But yeah, overall it was somewhat lackluster but not the actors fault; Chris Pine and Gal Gadot have great chemistry together.

Yet, the WSJ tries to say that the metaphor of Scrouge is what brought on the improvement of Victorian era, rather than industrialization and such; the editorial worships money as a power rather than and tool of barter and not recognizing that Scrouge himself is evil.

Get ready for a storm that could be a doozy.

Next week, likely starting Tuesday, a storm is expected to bring rain, ice and/or significant snow to the central U.S. Flooding rains are even possible.

The type of precipitation for any given locale, from all rain to all snow or something in between, will depend on temperature. Omaha and Lincoln are near the rain/snow line, according to AccuWeather, The World-Herald’s weather consultant, so the type of precipitation in those cities is especially uncertain. To the north, heavy snow is likely, and to the south, rain.

One thing that’s certain: The storm will be carrying a lot of moisture.

“All eyes are on this system,” said Becky Kern, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. “It’s going to have a big impact for the region midweek. The main story for anyone who has travel plans is to really keep an eye on this.”

The storm is likely to stretch from northern Texas to the Great Lakes, she said.

Another major storm is on the way to Nebraska; travel could be difficult next week (Omaha World-Herald)

Fortunately, we’re stocked up on food for quite a while now (although I ran out of ramen noodles).

South Dakota’s genocide continues.

South Dakota reported 41 deaths Thursday to reach a total of 1,430 during the pandemic. There have been 484 deaths in December.

Thursday’s report hit Black hills counties hard. Pennington County reported three deaths, Meade County reported two and Butte, Fall River, Lawrence, and Oglala-Lakota counties each reported one death.

The deaths included 24 men and 17 women. One person in their 20s died, according to Thursday’s report, the fourth person in their 20s to die from COVID-19 during the pandemic. One person in their 40s, three in their 50s, three in their 60s, nine in their 70s and 22 over 80 were also included in Thursday’s report.

Endangered ferrets get experimental COVID-19 [sic: Vaccine] in Colorado (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

In late summer, as researchers accelerated the first clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines for humans, a group of scientists in Colorado worked to inoculate a far more fragile species.

About 120 black-footed ferrets, among the most endangered mammals in North America, were injected with an experimental COVID vaccine aimed at protecting the small, weasel-like creatures rescued from the brink of extinction four decades ago.

The effort came months before U.S. Department of Agriculture officials began accepting applications from veterinary drugmakers for a commercial vaccine for minks, a close cousin of the ferrets. Farmed minks, raised for their valuable fur, have died by the tens of thousands in the U.S. and been culled by the millions in Europe after catching the COVID virus from infected humans.

Vaccinating such vulnerable species against the disease is important not only for the animals’ sake, experts say, but potentially for the protection of people. Some of the most pernicious human diseases have originated in animals, including the new coronavirus, which is believed to have spread from bats to an intermediary species before jumping to humans and sparking the pandemic.

AT&T has posted an official statement regarding yesterday’s bombing in Nashville.

Nashville Recovery Efforts (Goes to AT&T’s corporate Website)

We’re putting the full-force of our disaster recovery efforts into responding to this morning’s explosion in Nashville, including bringing in regional resources and our National Disaster Recovery teams.

Power is essential to restoring wireless and wireline communications and we are working with law enforcement to get access to our equipment and make needed repairs. Given the damage to our facility it will take time to restore service. We have already rerouted significant traffic from this facility and are bringing in other equipment, including numerous portable cell sites to the area.

There are serious logistical challenges to working in a disaster area and we will make measurable progress in the hours and days ahead. We’re grateful for the work of law enforcement as they investigate this event while enabling us to restore service for our customers.

We’ll continue to provide updates here as our recovery progresses.

Plot device, simply put. I can sort of understand it; there’s really great chemistry between him and Gadot and it shines through. Pedro Pascal was good as was Kristen Wiig - in my opinion, the screenplay needed a little more tightening up, but it’s good if you’re in the mood for one of those weekday discount-price matinee experiences.

Soul, on the other hand, is probably one of the best movies of 2020 and a fantastic addition to Pixar’s lineup of great films. I’d give WW84 a 6/10 and Soul a 9.5/10

Florida man holding trash can for friend finds dead body

SARASOTA, Fla. - A Florida man who had been storing a trash can for a friend for more than two months, found a badly decomposing body inside when he opened it, authorities said.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said the unidentified man had been holding the 55-gallon container for a friend who promised to retrieve it later. But that person never returned and after about two months, the man smelled a foul odor and opened the container. Inside were human remains that had been wrapped up.

The Herald-Tribune reported Tuesday that the sheriff’s office is investigating the identify of the remains and how they died. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

There was also the 500 Euro note, of course, made because of pressure from the Germans (from what I understand). They discontinued these a few years ago because of the obvious money laundering problems, where you could fit a million Euros in a small bag.

That depends on what part of the country you’re in. I can’t speak for all areas but $50 and $100 notes are common in circulation here.

$100 notes aren’t given as change of course, since they are the largest note, but withdrawing cash in a sufficient amount the bank will give you $100 notes.

The Brevard County Commissioners in Florida have adopted a new invocation policy that appears to be inclusive of non-Christian groups, but it may have to be tested to see if it actually works. What’s amazing is that they’re even bothering with this considering how many problems their previous invocation policy gave them. They could’ve gotten rid of the archaic practice. Instead, they’re attempting to inject religion into politics again and hoping it won’t blow up in their faces this time around.

Their previous attempt cost them nearly half a million dollars in penalties.

You can read all the details right here, but the story goes like this: The County previous limited invocations to “faith-based” groups only. The only time members of the Central Florida Freethought Community could speak was during the “Public Comments” portion of the evening. It had a very “separate-but-equal” vibe to it.

A coalition of lawyers representing church/state separation groups then sued the County on behalf of local atheists, and they won. The County appealed, and they lost yet again. Earlier this year, they were sent a bill for $490,000 (covered by the County’s insurance provider).

They could just drop the practice. It’s been three years since they’ve had any invocations and the sky has not fallen.

But last week, County Commissioner Curt Smith, the same fool who helped create this mess several years ago, said he wanted to bring them back.

Up here they’ll ask you what you prefer. It depends on how many bills I have to pay out of a given withdrawal but taking 50’s or 100’s is not that uncommon.

I’d just rather see a new lightweight 1, 5 & 10 coins replacing the bills of those denominations as that would be more cost effective. Make them out of Kevlar as that would be a great symbolism for the US ;)

First paragraph from wikipedia:

“V. A. Shiva Ayyadurai (born Vellayappa Ayyadurai Shiva,[2] December 2, 1963)[3] is an Indian-American scientist, engineer, politician, entrepreneur, and promoter of conspiracy theories and unfounded medical claims. He is notable for his widely disputed claim to be the “inventor of email”,[4] based on the electronic mail software called “EMAIL” he wrote as a New Jersey high school student in the late 1970s.[5][6] Initial reports that repeated Ayyadurai’s assertion—from organizations such as The Washington Post and the Smithsonian Institution—were followed by public retractions.[5][7] These corrections were triggered by objections from historians and ARPANET pioneers who pointed out that email was already actively used in the early 1970s.”

He also ran for Senate in MA a couple of times. Got like 33% of the vote in the Republican Primary and has been screaming up a storm about the elections being rigged… because of course he is.

I’d just rather see a new lightweight 1, 5 & 10 coins replacing the bills of those denominations as that would be more cost effective. Make them out of Kevlar as that would be a great symbolism for the US ;)

Get a big stack of $2 bills, start waving them at cashiers, and see how long it takes for one of them to call the cops on you.

“Weighted race computer algorithms.” That algorithm being the computer counted every vote cast, and you lost, asshat.

Ed Markey (D) 2,357,809
Kevin O’Connor (R) 1,177,765
Shiva Ayyadurai (R) (Write-in) 21,134

Surely it was a computer algorithm that caused you to take less than 0.5% of the vote. 4,500,000+ votes for Markey and O’Conner were somehow inserted and no one noticed.

Again I asked, why do people like this get to attend prestigious universities such as MIT and I was denied due to lack of money?

I always get a bunch of $2 bills when I go to the bank. I usually have about $40 worth.

When I leave a tip for someone, I always include a $2. (I also sometimes annoy merchants with them.)

The only time I was ever questioned was in a restaurant in Massachusetts; they called the cops on me. That delayed my wife and I from leaving, but the police explained to whoever the manager was “yes, $2 are a real thing.”

Back in the year 2000 the Japanese Government issued a limited number of 2000-yen notes — their usual currency issues are 1000, 5000 and 10,000 yen notes. They were legal tender and I saw more than one in circulation as late as 2007 when I first visited Japan. I don’t know if any are left now, other than in the hands of collectors.

Everything including the 10,000 yen notes are in common usage in Japan — About 18 months ago I paid 480 yen for entry to the Edo Museum in Ryogoku, Tokyo with a 10,000 yen note (worth about 100 bucks) and got 9,520 yen in change without a murmur.

Nashville Recovery Efforts (Goes to AT&T’s corporate Website)

Guys and Gals,

I know we are not supposed to be freaking each other out so I apologize if I am doing so.

This is the way my mind works and it has served me well in the past.

It seems at least possible to me that someone is testing how long it would take to restore service in a situation like this Nashville incident.

Then imagine for me what would happen if cell phones and other services were offline for a period of time.

His claim is that he invented the inbox, outbox, cc:, bcc:, etc. paradigm/functionality (50k lines of code he wrote, some deposited at the USPTO) that are all part of a modern email system back in 1978…

There was also the 500 Euro note, of course, made because of pressure from the Germans (from what I understand). They discontinued these a few years ago because of the obvious money laundering problems, where you could fit a million Euros in a small bag.

There’s a very cool second or third season of Mission Impossible where there is some gambling going on and folks are dropping thousand dollar bills into the pile. Interestingly, they actually looked real, rather than like the standard monopoly money that they typically used in those scenes. Turns out that they didn’t discontinue the 1000 dollar bill until 1969. Man, I would love for those to come back in fashion! I know it would certainly make the drug trade easier.

It comes from the early days of the Homestead Act, when an Army captain retired with his Canadian-born wife to the area north of Mitchell.

People still give money in the plate to churches, because they only have a few bad apples (like the cops).

Nuns in German children’s home rented boys to abusers (The Times of London)

Nuns running a children’s home in Germany prostituted boys in their care to priests, local politicians and businessmen in the 1960s and 1970s, according to a victim who has won a court fight for compensation.

The Darmstadt Social Welfare Court awarded damages to the man, now 63, after hearing accounts of brutal rapes he suffered while at the home in the southwestern city of Speyer. The court said that he had endured almost “constant abuse”.

Written by an “inventor of Email”. What do you think?

According to Wikipedia, here is his contribution to email

August 30 [1982] - EMAIL, an application developed at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, under Leslie P. Michelson, for an HP1000 minicomputer, would have its Copyright registered in the US, by a high school intern engaged on the project, Shiva Ayyadurai.

July 5 [2010] - Shiva Ayyadurai registers the domain inventorofemail.com, to assert his claim of being the inventor of email, not just a co-author of a specific electronic messaging implementation.

So, he worked on a project that just happened to be called EMAIL, with others, more than ten years after Roy Tomlinson sent the first actual email, then tried to make money off that by claiming to have invented some that had already been invented..
More here. And yes, he does seem to be a bit of a conspiracy theorist.

Oh, y’all aren’t even going to believe this, but yeah, it’s Scientology, so it’s very likely they are this nuts.

Basically, people around the country have noticed that Scientology orgs (their shops/churches/businesses) have been boarding up their windows over the last few weeks. You know, this would make sense if this was September, it was Clearwater, and a late season hurricane was bearing down on Tampa/St. Pete. But no, it’s late December, and we’re talking about orgs all across the country, from San Francisco to New York, which are boarding up their windows. Now some people thought it was because Scientology’s running out of money, or because COVID has affected Scientology in a peculiar way, but Scientology is used to throwing money down ratholes for huge buildings that stand empty.

Tony Ortega, America’s one reporter on the Scientology beat has been getting tips from people about boarded up orgs and this is what he learned from one of his informants who talked to a Scientology staffer in San Diego at a boarded up org:

Me: Excuse me, but can you tell me why this is boarded up?

Woman: It’s because of the protests.

I looked puzzled, and said, “Protests?” so she explained further.

Woman: It’s because of the election. People are upset about it, like the Black Lives Matter protests.

She continued to walk to her car. I was so surprised by her answer I couldn’t think of a follow-up question or ask who she was.

Unlike some of the “religious freedom” suits, it doesn’t sound to me like the MotB actually has much of a case: despite the nature of their exhibits, they are still a *museum*, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a Museum of Art, the Museum of the Bible, or the Museum of Motorcycle Parts, one would think general restrictions on openings of public institutions like that would apply in any case.

Besides, the MotB’s collection of stolen artifacts and forged papyri will still be there when museums reopen, eventually - still in place, and still no more legal (or authentic) than before….

I saw both WW84 and Soul yesterday.

I’m not going to give any spoilers out for either.

WW84 would have benefited from at least 15 minutes of cutting runtime and tighter editing/reworking of dialog. They seemed to miss the entire bit about it being set in 1984, and the lack of music to convey that was an issue for me. The trailers were the best part of the movie.

There was also the 500 Euro note, of course, made because of pressure from the Germans (from what I understand). They discontinued these a few years ago because of the obvious money laundering problems, where you could fit a million Euros in a small bag.

Heh. An ATM gave me some $50 early in the year. Those are hard to spend with the ways I usually use cash since a lot of shops around here will not take anything larger than a $20. (They have signs indicating they do not take $50 or $100 bills.) I eventually was able to find places that would take them and had sufficient change.

My credit union’s ATM defaults to spitting out $50’s if you ask for $100. There’s an option on the ATM to customize the bill mix so I have to take the extra steps to make sure that I get five $20s instead. That said, I’ve had the same amount of cash in my wallet for almost two months now. I always used to use cash at the grocery store, but now I use my debit card there because I don’t want to handle the money I get back in change, and the clerk doesn’t have to handle the card.

My neighborhood Chinese restaurant gets mad if you try to use a card for anything under $20, but they had (hope they still have) a system where they wouldn’t mix incoming money with the change money. They’d always have a stash that they said was sterilized, and use that for change.

I just saw a gaggle of geese flying south when I was on the back porch having a smoke and looking at the snow. Made me think of this joke.

This little bird decided to stay behind for a while longer after the rest of the flock started moving south. Figured he could snap up all the leftover food still there and catch up later. Eventually it started getting pretty cold ad the bird decided he better start south. He was flying along and as night started setting in his wings started to freeze up. Eventually he had to set down in a pasture. It was just getting colder and his wings were not going to thaw out there.

Along down the pasture comes this cow. It walks right over the bird and drops a patti right on the bird. The bird is thinking, “What else can happen to me now?”. But the poo is warm and soon the bird feels his wings thawing. He now has hope.

As he was warming up. He was so happy he started to sing. A nearby cat heard this singing and came to investigate. The cat grabs the bird out of the cow patti and eats him.

Morals of the story:
Everyone who shits on you is not necessarily your enemy.
Everyone who gets you out of shit is not necessarily your friend.
And if you are warm and happy in a pile of shit, keep your mouth shut.

I’m guessing the dudes friend just said: “Hey can I store some stuff in your garage/shed for a little while? It won’t take up much room and I’ll come back and get it in like a month”
Dude said: “sure no problem”. Friend came by while dude wasn’t home and dropped the stuff off. Dude didn’t pay it much attention until the friend never came back for it and started to wonder what was up.

I say this because if I saw a friend of mine storing an enormous trash can in my garage I would have questions. And unless I got good answers I would tell the friend to keep the can out of my garage/shed.

That was the argument I made before Thanksgiving here. Several people hammered me on that, claiming no one in their bubbles would be dishonest with them.

It doesn’t even take dishonesty. All it takes is someone coming in contact with a person who has not become ill yet but can spread the virus, such as a store clerk.

re: #212 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

True. I just found out last night that one of my hubby’s cousins, who is married to a nurse, has covid, her nurse hubby brought it home even though they have been careful. He strips down after work in the garage (where the washer and dryer are), showers before interacting with anyone and has pretty much followed all the rules. They both have mild cases as of now and their kids, ages almost 1 and 7 are fine so far. They did the best they could and even made their bubble smaller and still got sick.

Of course there are people who look at that and say “See, it doesn’t matter what you do so I might as well have fun.” Which is why we find ourselves here in this mess nearly a year after the first case was made public.

Floof Cat is doing the frentic behavior and racing all over the house. Apparently when the curtain is not in the way she likes racing in and out of the bathroom and jumping into the tub.

(Goes to get some pictures - which I expect will cause the behavior pattern to immediately end. Cat quantum physics?)

So my Partner gave me a $100.00 gift card to PetCo to get me a animal companion* to keep me company while I am at the apartment down south. Since either a cat or dog is a non-starter I am considering either a pygmy bunny or Guinea pig. Any advice Lizards?

* The $100.00 is for the companion and some of what it/she/he will require. Guess who gets to pick up the tab for everything else? LoL :-)

A Mom Anon  Dec 26, 2020 • 10:56:32am

Since there are a lot of doggo moms and dads here, I have a question.

Cleo has developed really dry, flaky skin, to the point that clumps of hair are coming out with big skin flakes attached along with serious dandruff. She’s on a food for sensitive skin and tummies and we’ve had her on apoquel for the itching but is causes awful diarrhea, so we switched to Benadryl for now. Do any of you have experience with adding something like salmon oil or other supplements to help with this? She’s shedding ridiculous amounts, but she’s a GSD and that’s expected. I’ve ordered some probiotics for her sensitive tummy, but need something that would help her skin too. Thoughts? Suggestions?

If you get a Guinea Pig, get 2. They are very very social animals and do not thrive solo.
Rabbits can live 10 years. My son’s did. RIP, Mr Peebles - best rabbit ever. But they chew everything! Can be litter trained.

Cookie, who we lost in April, developed a skin condition and was given apoquel.
We personally think that drug was a part of the reason he got so ill and eventually had to be let go.
I would not give that to any dog I have from here on out. But you stopped. Good.
Good luck, talk to about 10 Vets. You’ll find one with decent ideas.
