What is McCain implying? What if media rightfully sneers at the ugly ignorance of the Trumpers?

What is McCain threatening?

What is McCain threatening?

This is really the bit that gives it all away:

“No, I think that’s fake news, I’m sorry!” McCain shot back. “I know people that quietly voted for Trump, that didn’t want to be shamed. That don’t want to be yelled at, that don’t want to be called racist. And [the election] should not have been this close.”

The election wasn’t “close,” Trump lost by over 7 million votes and Biden won by the same EC margin as 2016 when Repubs like McCain sneered at Clinton supporters to “move on” and stop talking about Russia.

What this is really about is Meghan is married to a wingnut and feels an obligation to support him as his wife, which has meant destroying her “moderate Republican” credentials that got her all the fame when daddy ran in ‘08. She spent 4 years carrying water for Trump because “He’s your president!,” and now that he’s lost she wants people to forget all that.

It’s the same old story: celebrity conservative wants both to run with the in-crowd in the TV world, and the in-crowd in the church-n-guns crowd. McCain doesn’t seem to realize that words, like votes, matter.

Pin all of Trump’s sins onto the Trumpers. Let them be uncomfortable, for if they aren’t (and many are not uncomfortable with Trump’s ugliness) then such Trumpers are truly at a dead end.

9
Targetpractice  Jan 4, 2021 • 3:36:44pm

What’s probably eating at Meghan right now is that her whole shtick on the show was being the “voice of the reasonable Right.” That any time the other hosts began to (rightly) pound on Donny’s head or bad mouth his lackeys, she was supposed to waggle her finger and intone in an officious manner that such behavior would cost Dems the election because it would “scare away Trump supporters” who were supposed to be this monolithic bloc of voters who Dems had no choice but to try to sway their way.

It’s like Charles posted downstairs, this wasn’t the “man code,” it was the “mafia code.” The GOP have adopted their own version of “omerta,” with party members under an unspoken obligation to cover for the Don and to do his bidding without question or objection. What happened her was a breach of that, as “omerta” says that Raffensperger was supposed to do as Trump wanted, or at the very least keep quiet about being asked to do so. That he not only told, but that he released the taped conversation, is thus a grave breach and is likely to be held against him if he should choose to seek higher office in the near future.

Here’s a hopeful note from The Atlantic: Don’t Despair; Americans are equal to this moment:

[…]And if the shocks created the conditions for this disruption, they create the conditions for recovery. We underestimate how much of the bloodcurdling passions of the moment are the result of Americans—a restless, striving, mobile bunch—having been confined for almost a year. Anyone running a large organization has seen how normal quirks, resentments, and even pathologies have been magnified by the pandemic. But it is coming to an end. The vaccines promise to have the coronavirus in full retreat within six months.

Then, if history is any guide, people will be too busy building (or rebuilding) businesses, catching up on education, and partying to obsess about politics. Donald Trump will be a distraction to the main story of economic, educational, and health recovery. Americans will have stuff to do, and that is, ultimately, what most of us prefer to political agitation. Even when, as happened so often in the past, many people are swept up by political passion, we know that eventually those emotions abate, and Americans will get on with their lives.[…]

Basically, the gripe that Repubs have with Raffensperger is that he violated the unspoken code by making his beef with Trump public rather than doing so privately, thus getting not only their enemies (Dems, media, etc) involved but also creating the possibility of legal action that could further hurt the party. They all privately hate Trump, but they hold to the code that such feelings be kept between them and him. Depending upon their level of fanaticism, some will end up taking that shit to their grave, if only because they have aspirations of one day sitting in the Oval Office.

From downstairs:

re: #234 sagehen

If state legislatures pick senators… the very gerrymandered states will NEVER have a senator chosen by statewide election.

Yep. There would be no popular vote for senator; the legislature of a highly gerrymandered state would never reflect the actual preferences of the population. It would be like Wisconsin where 53% of the population votes Democratic, but 60% of the legislators are Republican. It’s amazing the number of people who appear eager to relinquish their right to choose those who supposedly represent their interests. But then 47% of voters support Trump — so clearly a large percentage of Americans favor authoritarian regimes.

Performance

Maximum speed: 300 mph (480 km/h, 260 kn) (estimated), 35 mph (56 km/h) (actual)

Do they, though? I really don’t think so.

Even if some of them think Trump is crass, they would rather he violently assault their daughters and insult their families than see Democrats have a functional government or share the riches of the US with black people. Any Trump quibbles they might have are much, much better to them than seeing us, people they hate more, doing well.

We should assume if this fleeing the country scenario does play out as often predicted Trump will have the “keys to the kingdom” with him to offer Putin wide latitude for Trump’s shenanigans while inside Russia.

Trump’s sycophants have probably been actively gathering as much info, documents and data to hand over to Trump while they also pack their bags for an overseas life to avoid prosecution.

Our national security in regards to intel and infrastructure may well be nearly ruined for years and may have to be essentially rebuilt.

re: #77 Florida Panhandler

We should assume if this fleeing the country scenario does play out as often predicted Trump will have the “keys to the kingdom” with him to offer Putin wide latitude for Trump’s shenanigans while inside Russia.

Trump’s sycophants have probably been actively gathering as much info, documents and data to hand over to Trump while they also pack their bags for an overseas life to avoid prosecution.

Our national security in regards to intel and infrastructure may well be nearly ruined for years and may have to be essentially rebuilt.

If the Brits can manage and are willing to hold him there until Biden can be sworn in.

Purely a question of willing. Able is easy when you’re talking about preventing a fixed wing aircraft from taking off. Block the runway and that plane isn’t going anywhere.

Donnie might be crazy enough to order them to make a run for it, and there _might_ be someone crazy enough to listen to him.

And for all we know, he might have a second plane under his control at the same airport, and might be crazy enough to try a Hollywood spy thriller style getaway.

Did I really just spend two sentences explaining to my cat that I was leaving the bedroom door open partway, in case she needed to “use the facilities”? And did she really just look at me like she understood every word of that, and if I hadn’t done so, she would have suggested it? Indeed.

Is that like Niel Patrick Harris’ Barney character in How I Met Your Mother when he tries to pick up women at the airport?

The county where this is being held had the lowest turnout in the state on Nov 3. I haven’t seen any of it except a shot of the crowd, if there is 500 people there I’d be surprised.

This is the line 5 hours ago, If there are only 500 people there then thousands must have left early.

It is a cult

My new computer arrives tomorrow. This is my belated Christmas present to myself, after my 12-year old beloved Mac Pro suddenly up and died on me.

Well, it isn’t actually new. It’s the same model bought from eBay, because I have a bunch of peripherals and software that works with this Mac Pro and I don’t want to have to buy replacements for all of it. Two 30” Cinema monitors, which can’t be connected to the new Macs easily, for starters.

But I am kind of salivating over that M1 Mini, I must admit.

Charles I run the same chess program on the M1 and the Intel i7 Minis and the M1 is faster even when it’s running Rosetta 2. Still experimenting with other programs that have been Siliconized! Now I’m planning to get the M1 MacBook Air when the tax refund comes in.

Well this was a surprise. My evil too big to fail employer has a program with a company where I get a fancy meter, test strips and lancets. I was running out of strips and lancets, so I ordered them through the meter. Today I got the strips and lancets via FedEx. That is absolutely a first. Every other time I’ve ordered, they’ve come by USPS. I can’t help but wonder if deliveries are being made by carriers other than USPS because of the various issues being reported with slow/nonexistent deliveries.

re: #116 mmmirele

From what I can gather, FedEx and UPS can put a limit on how many parcels they handle in a day and then shift the excess to USPS. Which makes the USPS load heavier with 30K employees out or gone due to COVID-19. I seriously hope things get back to normal after this week, a lot of people need the mail for medications and other important items. Businesses aren’t getting materials they need to make products or the things they sell, pet supplies delayed, so much depends on mail delivery. And when needed items aren’t being delivered people then have to leave home and put themselves at risk. It’s a mess on purpose and I am not sure Biden can immediately fix it or not.
