BTW, thank you Charles for all you’ve done today. It’s been exhausting for everyone. But dammit, if people don’t stand for freedom - for real - there are motherfuckers who would gladly take it from us. Anyway, thanks again for all you do.

You may start to see this hysterical claim about antifa in the capitol:

They put a red circle around a word on a Trump hat, and wrote black on the picture. The one on the left which has a hand tatto supposedly of hammer and sickle is from the video game dishonored.

Georgia has been counted - 74 house members objected, but all senators withdrew their objection signatures, so no 2 hr debate. If no more objections, Biden/Harris should be official in about 15-20 minutes.

The Russian influence investigation will crank back up as soon as Biden takes over, without the narrow mandate of the Mueller investigation and the indifference, not to mention actual hostility and sabotage, of the administration.
We are years late in taking a systematic look at FARA violations, NRA style money laundering, and kompromat operations. What has already been proven in incidental cases, like the Maria Butina honeypot operations, and the daily monitoring of IRA influence focus, suggests that we could be looking at the greatest scandal in history. I do not blame the Russians who have participated, not much anyway, but the masses of Americans who have involved themselves in this are traitors who have done untold damage to this society.

I think the networks will be rolled up, with a good part of the political right going with it.

In particular, I am expecting the axe to fall on the pulpit pimps. Some of them, like Nazi preacher Rick Wiles, are almost comically obsequious in their support of Putin and the Kremlin line. The asshole who led the Jade Helm protests in Bastrop Texas in 2015, and called a US Army officer “Gestapo,” was, and is, the pastor of a “non-affiliated” Bible church. It’s easy to understand why. The GRU could hand Wiles 50K in cash to push their line for a year, and he is not accountable to anyone for where it came from. He could tell the IRS it literally fell out of the sky and they would have to take his word for it.

It’s been a remarkable, in an awful way, day.

The political reaction to this must be a short, sharp shock to the system.

Anyone involved in invading the Capital must be ID’d and arrested.

Anyone involved in the planning of this seditious act must be arrested, indicted, and prosecuted, no matter where it leads.

Drumpf must have the Nuclear Football taken away from him right now. I don’t care if it is formal or informal. He does not have the capacity anymore to make those decisions. Full stop.

If anything, I expect things to get worse. Maybe not tomorrow (but perhaps yes, tomorrow), but in the weeks and months to come, right up to the next election.

We are seeing the death throws of a religious movement that started a long time ago, but really coagulated in the 1970’s when some fundamentalist leaders decided to infiltrate and take over the GOP.

Sure, Biden and Harris will be sworn in.

And then we get 24/7 malice from Fox News, OANN, etc, doing their best to foment even more of a revolution.

The only way to deal with this is to confront it. I don’t know what Biden will do. I don’t know what Harris will do (other than sit in the Senate to continually break 50-50 ties.)

Those Republicans voting against Cruz etc. today are only doing so out of embarrassment. If the situation had been played better by Trump, Trump might have gotten enough Republicans on his side to really upset the election results.

I think it’s at its worst right now because as long as Trump is President the cops are less likely to properly stand up to the Maga crowd. I think once Biden is in office the Police hopefully won’t be in the mood to take selfies with these people while they’re breaking the law…

Hawley and Cruz must be disqualified from sitting in the Senate under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

It must be done after the electoral votes are finalized.

mmmirele  Jan 6, 2021 • 9:29:42pm

Today was my mother’s 81st birthday. Late in the afternoon she started telling my brother she was hungry and had he ordered the food from Olive Garden yet? He finally was able to order the food (our sister called to wish Mom a happy birthday and held things up). After my brother left to pick up the food, I explained briefly to my mother that there’d been an insurrection at the Capitol in Washington today, on her birthday, and one person had died. Her response, “Yeah, yeah, I get that, but I’m still hungry!”

The world could be coming to an end, and my mom will still be hungry.

Oh yeah, my brother said the Olive Garden was stuffed like there was a superspreader event in progress. Not good, not good at all.

re: #27 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

This path has been forged not for months or Trump’s presidency, but for years. Today was a milestone in that their POTUS they admittedly voted for AGAIN for A SECOND TERM promoted violence to further a greater political agenda. Furthermore, this was a calculated effort to accommodate a terrorist takeover of the capitol as the police accommodated “the right kind” of terrorists.

That’s some third world shit right there, and it has been fermenting for years, not months. Every word said, every “alternate” news broadcast, every manufactured grievance, every wingnut radio host, has poisoned minds, with absolute intention.

The problem with reaching across the aisle is the other side of the aisle is basically Nazi Germany, and there is no common ground with anything so despicable or godforsaken. If these fucks have an inch, today’s shitshow is where it leads. It’s only the beginning of the end.

President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team announced that open source software developer David Recordon has been named the White House Director of Technology. The team said his nearly 20-year career has focused on the intersection of technology, security, open source software, public service, and philanthropy. Recordon also was the first Director of White House Information Technology (IT) during the Obama administration, with IT modernization and cybersecurity his priorities. His agenda during the Biden presidency will include getting a grip on next-generation technology like facial recognition, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics. Recordon wrote on LinkedIn: “The pandemic and ongoing cybersecurity attacks present new challenges for the entire Executive Office of the President, but ones I know that these teams can conquer in a safe and secure manner together.”

It’s such a cheap ploy by Scott.

By voting differently on PA, he’s trying to say PA is a different case than the others.

Thus trying to legitimize Trump’s claims about PA, and to legitimize the Republican controlled legislature that wouldn’t seat a state senator.

This again shows that the Republicans voting against this show by Cruz et. al. are just putting on a dog and pony show.

If they really meant business they would throw out Cruz and Hawley.

This seems like a good time to release people from federal prisons for bullshyte charges like possession of maryjane so we can make room for those who attempted an armed putsch and attempted murder.

Scott is a criminal and completely reflective of the Florida electorate. He should be expunged too. If the Florida ex-felons can finally regain their right to vote — if there were a SCOTUS that acknowledged they were barred by an illegal poll tax, Florida may switch color.

Is this the reason why @jerk, er @jack decided to crack down on Trump?

82
Dr Lizardo  Jan 6, 2021 • 10:23:24pm

Now what’s interesting to me is that apparently, it was VP Pence that gave the order to activate the National Guard - not Trump. Also, this Department of Defense statement explicitly excludes Trump - while mentioning Pence, Pelosi, McConnell, and Hoyer by name: defense.gov

Of course, I’ve seen chatter about the cabinet mulling the 25th Amendment. But I was unaware that the Vice President had the authority, or power, to activate the National Guard; I always assumed that was purely at the prerogative of the POTUS.

So….did Pence simply exceed his authority? Has Trump been sidelined or something? Is Pence saying (more or less), “I’m POTUS now because Trump has gone straight out of his mind”?

re: #79 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Death stares are a dime a dozen, though. Any good actor can do that.

Until Romney enters a motion to remove Hawley and Cruz from the Senate, I won’t pat Mitt on the back.

Neither will I. But he seemed more genuine than I’ve ever seen him in the speech he gave on the Senate floor. He also seemed that way in another speech where he announced he was voting to convict Trump during the impeachment trial.

Understand - I’m not singing his praises his any way, shape or form. But I wonder if maybe he might be having a crisis of conscience about the way he kissed Trump’s ring after the’16 election. So maybe he will do what you describe, or at least support it.

I noted earlier that since Pence is the President of the Senate, he has the power to do what is necessary to protect Congress and the Capitol.

Ah, OK. I must’ve missed that.

One speculation I’m seeing, which actually has a certain logic to it (more than QAnon idiocy, for example) is that Trump’s already been put under wraps using the 25th but they’re keeping it on the hush-hush out of fear that it might cause an absolute coast-to-coast explosion of violence from the MAGAts.

Yes, that’s definitely tinfoil-hat territory…but at least it’s actually somewhat (if remotely) plausible. Unlike, let’s say, JFK, Jr. faking his death or that Donald Trump is some kind of 3-D chess player.

Of course, they do have to tell Grassley and Pelosi before it can take effect, but the 25th doesn’t say that they have to inform the President. Of course, that could be a difficult secret to maintain and keep from Trump.

So if I understand this, we remain a free country because Pence exceeded his authority in a way that could be construed as setting a precedent.

No way that can come back to bite us if a President and VP ever disagree and the President’s the one in the right, is there?

Ashli Babbit, the terrorist who was shot and killed in a failed attempt at insurrection, was apparently a QAnon nut.

Babbitt supported the violent pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory, according to her Twitter account. She quoted “Q,” the anonymous figure behind QAnon, which falsely claims Democrats and other opponents of President Trump are Satanic pedophiles, in an Aug. 21 tweet, writing: “It is going to be biblical - Q.” On Sept. 7, Babbitt posted a picture of herself at a Trump boat parade with the hashtag “WWG1WGA,” a reference to the QAnon slogan, “Where we go one, we go all.”

In total, Babbitt sent 21 tweets referencing the QAnon slogan, starting in February 2020. She also praised major QAnon promoters on the platform, and appeared to embrace conspiracy theories that hospitals are claiming fake coronavirus patients.

Babbitt kept up her support for QAnon just days ahead of the protest. On Jan. 1, she tweeted that she would be in Washington for Jan. 6, adding “WWG1WGA.” On Jan. 5, a day before her death, Babbitt tweeted references to another QAnon slogan, “dark to light,” and said the United States would soon see “The Storm”—a moment much awaited by QAnon followers, in which Trump would execute his opponents in the Democratic Party.

QAnon is an online breeding ground for radicalization and the promotion of terrorism.

Actually, for a fully competent president, it would be really difficult. The VP couldn’t do it alone, he would need the support of many people in the executive branch, who would be likely to be loyal to the President — unlike DT, who has burned all his bridges.

Four years ago I ran for local office here in deep red Arizona country as a Democrat. I’m starting to get twitchy myself. Might be time to crack open the safe.

I held local office here in the reddest US House district in the nation as an open and notorious Democratic Socialist. I was only voted out when the town found out I’m an atheist.

That said: It’s pretty quiet in my village tonight. Probably most of the town has no idea what’s going on (lack of Internet and cell service, unless they are watching television).

I would be more concerned about being dragged out of my house for being an atheist rather than a non-wingnut.

The Ghost of a Flea  Jan 7, 2021 • 12:18:04am

It’s late and my brain is stewed in stress, but:

1. The inciting rhetoric from Trump is not materially different from the voter fraud rhetoric used by Republicans every two years, for my entire life, to disenfranchise people…mostly black people. They’re literally can’t stop using this language because it’s baked in the culture; disavowals of Trump and the rioters are meaningless since there’s no space between his language and the rest of the party’s language. The only meaningful disavowal is one that acknowledges that voter fraud claims have always been bullshit.

2. Like everything else, this is an experiment in the imposition of the will of the minority in undemocratic ways by conservatives. It’s not a singular event, and it will be used as a model for future attempts to create a single party state. There are people objecting to this riot because it’s ugly and embarrassing, not because it’s a coup. Calls for bipartisanship have to be looked at through this lens of long-term bad faith.

3. Everything that looks like hypocrisy is the actual point of the disruption: these people are demonstrating that their are inherently superior, and are not subject to their own rules that they demand enforced on others. There’s not really an ideology at play, there’s really no material thing that is going to make them less intoxicated with their own importance.

4. Keep track of all the tactics and forms of violence deployed over the protests this year and how most of them were absent today. This is not just lack of preparedness: law enforcement are cowed and/or sympathetic. The protestors are, so far, correct in their assumption of greater societal license. Cop culture overlaps conservative culture in the resentment of accountability and glorification of rough hands on social inferiors; there is a lot of inherent solidarity there…and absolutely none with citizens that question authority.

5. As I’ve said for months, there is absolutely no returning to normal. A salubrious status quo doesn’t actually exist because all of the elements have been below the surface like early syphilis: nothing’s going on that isn’t a natural outcome of a century of rhetoric about who is a real American, and we’re eerily close to the old Redemption era white folks who just successfully un-made democracy when they didn’t win.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Congress’ tally of the Electoral College vote won by Joe Biden (all times local):

3:41 a.m.

Congress has formally validated Joe Biden’s presidential election victory on a day that saw a time-honored ceremony become a nightmare of unprecedented political terror.

The House and Senate certified the Democrat’s electoral college win early Thursday after a violent throng of pro-Trump rioters spent hours Wednesday running rampant through the Capitol. A woman was fatally shot, windows were bashed and the mob forced shaken lawmakers and aides to flee the building, shielded by Capitol Police.

The rampage began shortly after President Donald Trump repeated his unfounded claims of election fraud to thousands of rallying demonstrators he’d invited to Washington. Many then surged to the Capitol after he incited them to go there as lawmakers debated the electoral votes.

More than six hours after the violence erupted, lawmakers resumed their session.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon (R-Mining Interests) has no comment on the insurrection in Washington or various state capitals.

Nonviolent “Stop the Steal” protest held in Cheyenne as mob invades Capitol in D.C. (Cheyenne Wyoming Tribune-Eagle)

CHEYENNE - A nonviolent protest against the results of the 2020 presidential election was held Wednesday at the Wyoming State Capitol, eventually leading to the Wyoming Highway Patrol placing the building on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

At the same time the protest of around 300 people was occurring in Cheyenne, thousands of pro-Trump supporters gathered in Washington, D.C., with some of them storming inside the nation’s Capitol, causing the building to be placed on lockdown and lawmakers to shelter in place.

At the state Capitol, the protest organized by the Cheyenne Tea Party occurred just two days after many residents gathered in opposition to the state’s public health orders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus of this protest, however, was largely on the results of the 2020 presidential election, with Congress scheduled to meet Wednesday to count the Electoral College’s certified voting results.

“Congress must reject the Electoral College count … and if they don’t, and if our representatives don’t, we will, and that’s a promise,” rally organizer Moses Hasenauer said to cheers from the crowd. “We must protect the integrity of the vote.”

Protesters came from across the state for the rally, which Hasenauer said could be one of many that will be held in the coming weeks. Throughout the protest, the crowd frequently erupted into chants of “Stop the steal!” and “Drain the swamp!” People in the crowd also took verbal shots at U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney and Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., both of whom said they had no plans to object to the vote count that was planned in Congress.

That sounds like a threat to me.

The fervor of calling out the 25th Amendment seems to be dying down.

As for me, I expect the Senate tomorrow to go back to business as usual. Some Republicans will be concerned, for sure. But nothing will happen to Cruz or Hawley. McConnell will do his best to hold together his 50 so he’ll let Mitt or whoever rant at the podium, but that is all.

The House - maybe they’ll vote to impeach. But I doubt the result will be much different than the impeachment a year ago. If the House does impeach, I doubt McConnell will even bring it up for a vote.

187
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 7, 2021 • 1:53:02am

If I understand the Senate correctly, and I probably don’t, it is a pecking order based on longevity.

Hence Grassley being president pro tem.

The majority leader’s power rests in his control of the schedule.

The schedule is power because the Senate is run on some ancient thing (like Robert’s rules of order.)

So if McConnell won’t do something, it would take Grassley to do something. But Grassley has already proven he’ll defend Trump to the end.

It doesn’t matter how concerned Collins may get. It doesn’t matter how oratorical Sasse may get. It doesn’t matter how many death stares Romney may throw.

In the end, the Senate is a good ol’ boy club.

Well, I was a schoolkid when ABBA was in their prime. Pretty much every time they did a single it would just calmly occupy the number 1 slot, or thereabouts, and I was like “What?”. It was only later that I would appreciate how good their songs were. It was when Channel 4 showed a series of music films on Friday nights, and one of these nights the film was “ABBA: The Movie”, and me and my mum were like: “Yeah, let’s watch this. ABBA did some good songs, this might be okay.”, and it turned out to be very good, and it included the very epic song “Eagle”.

Yeah, and that was the case in the UK as well. Most ABBA fans are younger than I am. It was quite interesting to watch the process of ABBA coming back into fashion in the early 90s in the UK. First, there was the popular band Erasure doing an EP of ABBA songs, which was their only number 1 single. Then the ABBA covers band Bjorn Again did an EP of Erasure songs in an ABBA style, which was a hit. Then ABBA themselves released a hit compilation called ABBA Gold, which sold massively. And since then, it’s assumed in the UK that everyone loves ABBA, even though at the time everyone thought they were tacky. (To fair, their fashion sense was, but their tunes were not.)

So far on Facebook I’m seeing the following:
1. A great deal of silence from the outspoken conservatives. (And I want to see what comes out from one or two who were all about “doesn’t matter which side riots about the election, it’s wrong!”)
2. A few of the moderate libertarians are condemning it.
3. The liberals are condemning it. Some a bit more stridently than others.

I haven’t seen any apologists for it, yet.

I think there is still a lot of shock bubbling through. So a reaction here will possibly take a day or two more. (Or they’re waiting for the proper talking points to come forth from Fox and Q??? ////)

To be perfectly honest - and maybe this makes me a bad person - I’ve been waiting for some time for police to get rough with people who actually deserve it. They’ve been shooting, tear-gassing, pepper-spraying, and beating the living shit out of peaceful protesters for so long, and I’ve been inured with the idea of “police violence bad”, that I’ve forgotten that there are times when police DO have to kick people around. All the nuclear football does is permit the DOD to ascertain it is in fact the President ordering a nuclear strike.

The military is still obligated to disobey unlawful orders, and a nuclear attack on a nation which has not done us harm is a war crime. No such attack can occur if those who receive the code from the “biscuit” disobey.

“Jan. 6, 2021.. will go down as the day that broke the Republican Party as we know it and began the GOP’s ultimate reckoning with Trumpism.”

The problem is that Trump has always been unfit to serve. Nothing has changed. Trump promised to pay legal fees for rally attendees who assaulted protesters. Trump praised White Supremacists after Heather Hayer was murdered in Charlottesville. He told the terrorists who invaded the Capital yesterday that he loved them. Newspapers should have been calling for the 25th Amendment remedy from the get go.

The potential for nuclear war and an actual armed assault and occupation of the nation’s Capitol, which hasn’t occurred since 1814. Apparently, that’s how bad it could get.

this part here is wow

the white house and the prez are pretty well protected
apparently the capitol is not so much at all

maybe this was systemic - ie there was never any ‘real’ protection in place for the capitol

or the police et al just dropped the ball ‘this time’ and then were overwhelmed - you know, palling around with the rioters, taking selfies, etc - as we’ve seen elsewhere

seriously - someone not even a maga, not even ‘connected’ to the riots could have piggybacked on them for cover and walked into the building with a bomb and blown the place up with all those congresspeople in there

this is kind of chilling

I couldn’t sleep last night. I tossed and turned.

We had just witnessed an armed insurrection storm the Capitol with the intent to overthrow the legitimate transfer of power between administrations and to keep Trump in power.

We witnessed members of Congress being rushed from the Capitol to a safe location. We witnessed VP Pence rushed by his security detail out of the Capitol and to safety. We witnessed Trump supporters ushered in by Capitol police in at least one video while others climbed walls and broke windows to enter the Capitol. We saw them storm into the House and Senate chambers and offices of the Speaker. We saw them trash and pillage and one person was shot dead for it.

People were arrested (not enough IMO). Not enough security was present despite the clear warnings and signals that this was going to happen. We all know that when the BLM marched in DC, Trump’s goons were deployed to the Lincoln Memorial to prevent the protesters from using that historic spot for speeches and photo ops. None of that was present. That was mighty white of the security forces. Weird. But I’ll get back to that at another time.

The one thing that sticks with me all throughout this is this tweet:

That’s the WH Counsel saying that anyone who supported Trump in the WH in his efforts could face prosecution for treason.

Every last one of the people in the WH is on the hook. Their silence was assent. Their refusal to stand up and block Trump’s coup attempt assented. I don’t care how many resigned yesterday, overnight, or any day between now and January 20.

You are either going to be investigated and prosecuted for treason or investigated and prosecuted for misprison (which is the failure to stop crimes that you know are occurring). We have coconspirators and accessories to the crime all throughout the White House. We have them in Congress too.

All of the GOPers who voted to support Trump’s effort to overthrow the election results with conspiracy theories and a lack of any evidence substantiating their claims are also engaging in treason. They’re the ones who helped Trump sustain his effort.

They’re the ones who are giving agency to the insurrectionists who carried out yesterday’s storming of the Capitol. They’re the ones who are winking/nodding or straight up cheering on the insurrectionists to attack the very pillars of democracy.

These treasonweasels should be expelled from Congress for their actions, starting with Cruz and Hawley. But in all likelihood they wont. Federal prosecutors should start investigating every last one of these people though for their role and charge them accordingly though.

Every last GOPer who voted for contesting the votes yesterday better lawyer up, and lawyer up with a better class of lawyers than Trump has used. Because they’re going to need it. Yesterday’s events show that there was a crime wave in DC, and it was spearheaded by Trump but it ultimately ends with the entire GOP.

The GOP has spent the last four years enabling and condoning Trump criminality. They refused to impeach or remove Trump despite ample evidence of felony conduct. That single action directly led to yesterday’s insurrection.

These are directly related, and it all stems from a GOP completely divorced from facts and reality and backing a thoroughly corrupt and compromised treasonweasel who doesn’t care about anyone or anything except himself.

Trump was already furious at Pence even before yesterday’s festivities got underway. There definitely needs to be an investigation into how the security cordon was so quickly and easily overwhelmed when we know that the security forces can be deployed quickly to thwart BLM from holding protests at the Lincoln Memorial and can be corralled with a show of force as seen in DC and elsewhere.

The distinct lack of force outside the Capitol enabled these insurrectionists to gain entry into the Capitol and put every member of Congress and the VP at risk. Those who failed must be held to account. Those who were complicit with the insurrectionists must be charged accordingly.

Zero tolerance for any of these fuckers. Law and order has meaning, and what these treasonweasels did must be dealt with harshly and promptly.

It’s quite simple. Some people, despite the oppression or demonization they felt in their home countries, are evil. Their evil manifests itself as an overwhelming need for power. Their need for power justifies in their minds any and all means of violence necessary.

Head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky
The boomerang of color revolutions has returned to the United States. Unrest in Washington could lead to a crisis in the American system of power. American society was split in two. Although the Democrats prevailed not only in the presidential elections, but also retained a majority in the House of Representatives, the stability of the US political system can hardly be said. It is unbalanced in a situation where the legitimacy of the presidential election is challenged by so many citizens.

The unrest certainly casts a shadow over the entire democratic transition process. Even in his video message today, President Trump showed that he is not sane and unable to accept the results of the 2020 election. President Trump’s willingness to provoke violence and social unrest in order to forcefully overturn an election is clearly in line with this standard. Instability in any, especially in the largest nuclear power, always conceals possible threats to world peace.

It can be said with a high degree of confidence that if the losing president had not had independent access to a huge audience, these events would not have happened. This is perhaps the first time that I think blocking [social media accounts] is the correct policy. The outgoing president’s rash statements have already resulted in human casualties. A few tweets and the crowd storms the Capitol. It would be good for [Trump] to keep quiet until the riots calm down. And social networks must work according to strict rules within the framework of the law, because absolute information freedom is becoming a weapon of extremists.

If one day does come to define Trump, his “movement” and all that he did as President, it will be January 6, 2021.

Yeah, and I could tell by the tone of his voice…he was livid. And though I might not agree with him on a good many things, on this, all I can say is, “Fuckin’-A.”

Hell, now even Bill Barr is chiming in:

Former Attorney General William Barr says President Donald Trump’s conduct as a violent mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol was a “betrayal of his office and supporters.”

In a statement to The Associated Press, Barr said Thursday that “orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable.”

Barr was one of Trump’s most loyal and ardent defenders in the Cabinet.

His comments come a day after angry and armed protesters broke into the U.S. Capitol, forcing Congress members to halt the ongoing vote to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s election and then flee from the House and Senate chambers.

Barr resigned last month amid lingering tension over the president’s baseless claims of election fraud and the investigation into Biden’s son.

apnews.com

What’s interesting there is that Barr obliquely accused Trump of being directly responsible for yesterday’s clusterfuck.

Nyt

Ezra Klein: “When the literalists rushed the chamber, Pence, Cruz and Hawley were among those who had to be evacuated, for their own safety. Some of their compatriots, like Senator Kelly Loeffler, rescinded their objections to the election, seemingly shaken by the beast they had unleashed. But there is no real refuge from the movement they fed. Trump’s legions are still out there, and now they are mourning a death and feeling yet more deceived by many of their supposed allies in Washington, who turned on them as soon as they did what they thought they had been asked to do.”

“The problem isn’t those who took Trump at his word from the start. It’s the many, many elected Republicans who took him neither seriously nor literally, but cynically. They have brought this upon themselves — and us.”

I also think with Trump’s attempted criminal coup yesterday that he has burned any small chance Putin would have taken him in (even as a Trophy pet). The last thing Putin wants is a known loon who can in fact and in reality incite and lead a rebellion.

Trump burned his chances also with the UAE. They are within the target crosshairs of Iran who can do a lot of things to get at Trump if he is there. There may be a slim chance of somewhere like Hungary for Trump to try and flee to but really it now seems like he is just plain fucked.

I was a fan of Abba as a teenager. I have the complete collection CD set (nine CDs), and the Erasure EP as well.

I wonder how many organizations will make adjustments to their policies of “Treat Back-the-Blue white people nicely.”

Was it this from Jean-Paul Sartre;

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

When I worked as a doc in the prison system, it opened my eyes as to just how unequal the application of law is in the US. The white prisoners were almost invariably very dangerous predators - murder, armed assault, etc. The black prisoners were almost invariably ordinary people who had done a little weed or similarly nonviolent crimes. There are obviously some exceptions everywhere, but overall, to face a consequence as a white man in this country, you need to either financially hurt other white men, or do a really violent crime. And armed insurrection against a Democratic government does not fall into these categories.

Related.

I’ve been sitting on a county grand jury as a juror. We have prosecutors presenting evidence as to whether to return a bill or not (to seek to bring criminal cases and prosecute or not).

The adage about being able to indict a ham sandwich is absolutely and indisputably true. The threshold for indictment is so low as to be almost nonexistent. You have to try as a prosecutor to not bring charges.

That’s why all the cops who have killed persons of color for decades without seeing those cops prosecuted is such a horrific miscarriage of justice. Prosecutors refuse to bring cases or sabotage the cases in such a way that they don’t bring them.

Had they treated the cop as any other person or as a person of color, there’s no doubt in my mind that those cops would be indicted. Having the badge and gun puts them above the law. Prosecutors rely on cops to make all the other cases they present at a grand jury, which is part of the conflict of interest here. That reliance means that if they prosecute cops, they think they lose support and cooperation of the cops themselves.

That too feeds into the whole notion of bad apples. Chris Rock put this succinctly: we don’t tolerate bad apples in certain lines of work because the risks of failure are so high - you don’t want a bad apple airline pilot because people can die. So why allow bad apples as cops? It should be zero tolerance.

Dr Lizardo  Jan 7, 2021 • 9:21:59am

Well…..

The supporters of President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol on Wednesday to stop the ratification of President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory were attempting a violent coup that multiple European security officials said appeared to have at least tacit support from aspects of the US federal agencies responsible for securing the Capitol complex.

Insider spoke with three officials on Thursday morning: a French police official responsible for public security in a key section of central Paris, and two intelligence officials from NATO countries who directly work in counterterrorism and counterintelligence operations involving the US, terrorism, and Russia.

They said the circumstantial evidence available pointed to what would be openly called a coup attempt in any other nation. None were willing to speak on the record because of the dire nature of the subject.

While they did not furnish evidence that federal agency officials facilitated the chaos, Insider is reporting this information because it illustrates the scale and seriousness of Wednesday’s events: America’s international military and security allies are now willing to give serious credence to the idea that Trump deliberately tried to violently overturn an election and that some federal law-enforcement agents — by omission or otherwise — facilitated the attempt.

To add to this - a quote from an unnamed official;

The third official, who works in counterintelligence for a NATO member, agreed that the situation could only be seen as a coup attempt, no matter how poorly considered and likely to fail, and said its implications might be too huge to immediately fathom.

“Thank God it didn’t work, because I can’t imagine how hard it would be to sanction the US financial system,” the official said. By sanctions, he means the imposition of the diplomatic, military, and trade blockages that democratic nations usually reserve for dictatorships.

“The broader damage around the world will be extensive in terms of reputation, and that’s why Putin doesn’t mind at all that Trump lost. He’s got to be happy to take his chips and count his winnings, which from the Trump era will be a shockingly quick decline in American prestige and moral high ground.

“Every moment the Americans spend on their own self-inflicted chaos helps China, it helps Putin, and, to a lesser extent, it helps the mini-dictators like [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan and [Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor] Orban, who breathe cynicism about politics, human rights, and democracy as their air,” the official said. “They won’t miss Trump; they’ll be glad to see his drama leave so they can enjoy the poisoned political climate.”

Trump & Punishment
The crimes are the worst since the Civil War. For the republic to survive, justice must be served.

Andrew Johnson’s failure to properly punish the traitors—and make no mistake: Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and their Confederates were all stinking traitors, the vilest in American history—has ripple effects to this day. There is a thruline from the half-assed Reconstruction to Ford pardoning Nixon, and from there to Obama not investigating Bush and Cheney for war crimes.

(snip)

From Hammurabi until a few decades ago, the punishment for treason has been death. There are practical reasons for this. If Paul Manafort, for example, had been executed for his betrayal of the country, he would not have been available to crime with Rudy Giuliani from his prison cell, and he would not now be back on the street with a full presidential pardon. The death sentence is harsh, yes, but not arbitrary: There are compelling national security reasons to prosecute and execute traitors. Do we really think that Jared Kushner, that seditious little shit, is not going to spend the next couple of years auctioning off our intelligence secrets to enemy despots for big bucks, if he goes free? Trump is a billion dollars in the red; he’s going to turn down offers of cash money for national security tidbits? I’m not a supporter of capital punishment, but for straight-up treason, the worst of all crimes, I’m willing to make an exception.

There is a reason that countries like Norway retained the death penalty for treason and related offenses long after they had abolished it for all other categories of crime. The only executions in Norway’s modern history as an independent nation were the 37 Nazi criminals and collaborators who were shot after World War II, including arch-traitor Vidkun Quisling. The death penalty was abolished completely only in 2005.

Masha Gessen:

“…I have thought about lack of fear a lot. When I still lived in Moscow, journalists who had access to the Kremlin often chided me for taking Putin and his goons too seriously. They didn’t exactly deny that he could have people killed and probably did, or that he was building a dictatorship. They just thought I was making too much of it. It took me a long time to understand that this wasn’t because these men knew more than I did, or even thought they knew more. It was precisely because they shared a world with Putin and his men and saw them as normal, as part of their community. We do not fear those whom we see as being like us; we fear the other.

Black Lives Matter protesters are other to the Capitol Police. So are survivors of sexual assault or women who protest for the right to choose. But an armed mob storming the Capitol, and their Instigator-in-Chief, are, apparently, familiar enough to be dismissed as clowns. (Some of them, in their face paint and strange headgear, even seemed to embrace their identification as clowns.) The invaders may be full of contempt for a system that they think doesn’t represent them, but on Wednesday they managed to prove that it does. The system, which shrugged off their violence like it had been a toddler’s tantrum, represents them. It’s the rest of us it’s failing to protect.”

President Donald Trump is making the last weekend getaway of his presidency with a trip to Camp David tomorrow, a White House official confirmed to Insider.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday implemented temporary flight restrictions over the Maryland presidential retreat, with the order indicating: “Temporary flight restrictions for VIP Movement.” Similar flight restrictions are implemented when the president leaves Washington, DC as a security measure against a potential aerial attack.

Flight restrictions are scheduled to take effect on Friday at 3:30 p.m., hinting that the president may depart the White House in the late afternoon. The restrictions are scheduled to end at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
