Fantastic Irish Quartet: Lankum: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

This performance was recorded on March 6, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

May 18, 2020 | Bob Boilen — Lankum’s journey from Ireland to the Tiny Desk was a wild and bumpy adventure. First, visa problems forced them to cancel their late February date. A week later, much of the world is more worried about COVID-19, though daily patterns here hadn’t changed. They arrived in New York, hopped in their van to Washington, D.C., only to have that break down. Finally, after all that, some good news: While in their new van heading to the Tiny Desk, the Dublin quartet received news that its brilliant album The Livelong Day had won Ireland’s Choice Music Prize Album of the Year!

All of this was a build-up to a Tiny Desk concert I’ll never forget. I, too, am a massive fan of the drones from the uilleann pipes, harmonium, concertina and the stunning voice of Radie Peat. The Livelong Day to my ears has as much in common with Irish tradition as it does to electronic music, though everything they do is acoustic. But the power and heft of what brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, Cormac MacDiarmada, and Radie Peat convey through their reeds, strings, and vocals are deeply stirring emotionally and have stuck with me all these months since this concert’s recording.

A week later I saw Lankum in concert. It was the last one I attended in a real venue and the world was rapidly changing. Their journey home, I trust, was frightening. The idea of getting on a plane was so very different from just a few weeks before. I know it was tough, but I’m ever so grateful for this life experience and grateful to be able to share it here.

This whole thing had been planned out. And we will learn that LE officials were complicit.

They actually thought FFVCS was going to stroll to the Capitol and were clearing the way for him to do so.

Also, why aren’t Baked Alaska and half-nude Viking under arrest right now?

This is the cop that sustained a severe head injury from a terrorist bashing him with a fire extinguisher, right? They won’t believe simple facts. They won’t take responsibility and they won’t accept a factual account of his injuries. They won’t, no matter what. It will all be various conspiracy theories.

I’d imagine they’ve probably gone to ground. I think even their hopelessly addled brains recognize they’re likely in deep shit.

Loud music? The early-to-mid 1980s Iron Maiden trifecta…The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave. Very few bands have nailed a hat trick like that, releasing three of the greatest heavy metal albums back to back.

I don’t listen to Iron Maiden as much as I used to; but when I do listen to Iron Maiden, so do my neighbors.

Being as so many people were already released, I suspect video surveillance becomes front and center, and I’m sad to say I believe much will be mysteriously missing.

Yeah, that high tech shit is only in the movies. The video in the nation’s capitol will be more sketchy than the 20+ year old system at the the oldest 7-11 in the neighborhood.

Still trying to grasp the obscenity that occurred on Wednesday. I remember as a 9-year-old being awed at the Capitol Rotunda when my dad and I made a trip there at my request back in 1977. Having always been a historical and political nut, just walking amidst the Capitol, the National Archives, and the Lincoln Memorial felt like hallowed grounds.

What occurred on Wednesday really shook me. Not that I was surprised. I believe I had posted a few days earlier that i expected these thugs would try to prevent members of Congress from making it into the building.

I was raised on the belief that we are all a part of a democracy. That we elect leaders to represent us. But now we realize that we have elected individuals who want to destroy our ideal.

And for what? A few percentages on the tax rate? Common-sense regulations on who can buy a firearm?

No, it’s about gaining absolute, authoritarian power. These folks who stormed the Capitol are nothing more than rubes who have been utterly misled by would-be strongmen. FFVCS will not be the last one to try this - especially given the ease by which they gained access to our temple of democracy.

So fuck FFVCS. Fuck Rupert Murdoch. Fuck Rush Limbaugh. And fuck al the others who enabled this shit to happen. This country is so much better than this - and so are its people. But I KNOW that our republic is at severe peril.

I don’t know, DC’s got some shit you probably never knew about, plus you basically have a vast majority of your perps willingly walking around with GPS trackers on, in addition to livestreaming themselves doing the deed in hi-def and and taking pics (their cell phones). Hell, some even gave media interviews:

Several police departments, such as Miami, Philadelphia, and New York City, turned to facial recognition platforms—including the highly controversial Clearview AI—during the widespread summer 2020 demonstrations against police brutality and in support of Black communities. In Philadelphia, for example, police used software to compare protest footage against Instagram photos to identify and arrest a protestor. In November, The Washington Post reported that investigators from 14 local and federal agencies in the DC area have used a powerful facial recognition system more than 12,000 times since 2019.

Neither would an agency need actual photos or footage to track down any mob participant who was carrying a mobile phone. Law enforcement agencies have also developed a habit in recent years of using so-called geofence warrants to compel companies such as Google to provide lists of all mobile devices that appeared within a certain geographic area during a given time frame.

[…]

Local media outlets around the country have easily identified several other participants, including Adam Christian Johnson, the Florida man who grinned and waved to the camera after he stole the lectern from the House floor. Arkansas resident Richard Barnett, the man who put his feet up on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) desk to pose for a photo before stealing a piece of her mail, gave an interview to his local CBS affiliate about his participation in the mob.

West Virginia state legislator Derrick Evans used Facebook to livestream himself storming the Capitol as part of the mob, as did well-known white nationalist personality Tim Gionet (also known as Baked Alaska).

Although Evans later deleted the video, that won’t help him: not only are Facebook and other platforms subject to subpoenas and search warrants, but individuals and groups have been making plentiful copies and backups to preserve evidence.

I read this earlier today on Reddit - and it actually makes sense. It’s purely speculative, mind you, but it certainly fits with Trump’s harebrained “logic”.

This narrative is coming together like this (in my opinion):

-Trump and Q-conspiracy leadership called loyalists to D.C. en masse on January 6 for violence (including mass executions, as per the top article in this thread). Not coincidentally, both houses of Congress were in session in the Capitol building on the 6th. Once the crowd had assembled in D.C., Trump gathered them at a rally and incited them to march on the Capitol building (aol.com) some of them were carrying nooses and zip ties, some had weapons. Meanwhile Guiliani called for “trial by combat” to settle the election. (independent.co.uk)

- Brand new DoD appointees had deliberately knee-capped the January 6 defensive capacity of the Capitol building earlier in the week (Washington Post paywall-free version, my apologies to the WP, excellent paper): (archive.vn)

- If any members of Congress had been murdered or taken hostage the administration would have declared martial law - as Flynn had been calling for for a week or so now (msn.com) - to ensure “safety and continuity of government”.

- The insiders on this scheme couldn’t deploy the military to do the coup directly (because our career military brass weren’t playing along, thank the Gods), but the administration could make the security apparatus stand down and create a mob to decapitate Congress. It appears that this had been planned for weeks.

Edit: This could all be a conspiracy fantasy, I admit. We have some of the QAnon/PB ringleaders in custody; I imagine the FBI knows a lot more about how this all came down, by now. But just in case, we need this administration out, now.

Again, purely speculative, and of course we’ll almost certainly find out more in the not too distant future.

And I strongly agree that Trump’s gotta go. NOW.

The pieces selected for this recording recall and dramatize events connected with the Carolingian Empire: the lamentation upon the death of Charlemagne, the battle of Fontenay-en-Puisaye, the ransacking of the abbey of Saint-Florent, the Emperor’s passion for the poets of Roman antiquity: Boethius, Horace, Virgil… The pieces recorded in this anthology are among the very few that have kept their musical notation, a mere set of neumes written above the word. The video was made with drawings from the 9th century Utrecht psalter, one of the many beautiful Carolingian manuscripts

Frankly, I expected more epaulets and tanks, but this is all you get. A bunch of dumbasses throwing chili powder. Someone at Four Seasons Total Landscaping, next to a dildo shop. What a fucking stupid century. This is what our coups look like…

America’s democracy is a lightly modified enslavement system that black people only wrested universal franchise from in 1965. It’s frankly a terrible democracy, built on voter suppression of 94% of the population, full of racist booby traps and prone to absurd randomness. For example, your dumbass founders left enough time to get to Washington by horse. Four months where a loser could hold power, later reduced to two. This is a built-in coup.

Think about it. Your system gives the loser all the power and guns for two whole months. Almost every modern democracy changes power the next day, to avoid the very situation you’re in…

Excellent reading. Holy shit, what a punch to the gut.

I’ve been looking at the various RWNJ fever swamps and it’s kinda all over the place; yes, some are feeling dejected and that Trump has become a “beta cuck”, others are winding conspiracy theories that it’s a deepfake or that the Deep State has outright threatened Trump and his family with death, then there’s others noting that Trump didn’t actually say “incoming Biden Administration” (or words to that effect - personally, I chalk that up to Trump’s being unable to say that because that would be nothing short of ego death for him), etc., etc.

Under the Felony Murder Rule, EVERYONE there may be facing murder charges. Hope springs eternal.

Ahem.

18 U.S. Code § 3591 - Sentence of death

(a)A defendant who has been found guilty of—
(1)an offense described in section 794 or section 2381; or

(2)any other offense for which a sentence of death is provided, if the defendant, as determined beyond a reasonable doubt at the hearing under section 3593—
(A)intentionally killed the victim;

(B)intentionally inflicted serious bodily injury that resulted in the death of the victim;

(C)intentionally participated in an act, contemplating that the life of a person would be taken or intending that lethal force would be used in connection with a person, other than one of the participants in the offense, and the victim died as a direct result of the act; or

(D)intentionally and specifically engaged in an act of violence, knowing that the act created a grave risk of death to a person, other than one of the participants in the offense, such that participation in the act constituted a reckless disregard for human life and the victim died as a direct result of the act,
shall be sentenced to death if, after consideration of the factors set forth in section 3592 in the course of a hearing held pursuant to section 3593, it is determined that imposition of a sentence of death is justified, except that no person may be sentenced to death who was less than 18 years of age at the time of the offense.

I’m against the death penalty, but we might just want to start spreading this around.

Thus illustrating the problem with a cult of personality. When your guy/girl finally falls from grace, what do you do? It’s a choice not too dissimilar from back when I made my break with the right; either you pucker up and admit you were wrong and leave the cult, or you jump off a bridge in pursuit of every last scrap of hope that your person will make a comeback. People such as the illustrated are the ones who are jumping off a bridge because they can’t figure out how to think for themselves and are afraid of change.

Loud music? The early-to-mid 1980s Iron Maiden trifecta…The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave. Very few bands have nailed a hat trick like that, releasing three of the greatest heavy metal albums back to back.

There is tons of evidence posted on FB, Youtube, etc. Even if you delete it still exists. If they wanted to they could go after thousands of people. Also, news crews may have some great video.

And CNN had a bunch of equipment destroyed by that mob outside the Capitol - so they have reason to pursue criminal and/or civil charges for that alone.

A GOP Representative was standing beside him. He said they had discussed rules of engagement for some minutes. The number of officials present, possibly including VP, made the red line pretty clear. In the films of the shooting she seems to be wearing a pack.

Interview was on Fox.

Shit, meet fan (Courtlistener):

Although Powell assured the public during television and radio appearances that her claims were backed by “evidence,” Powell’s “evidence” included declarations from a motley crew of conspiracy theorists, con artists, armchair “experts,” and anonymous sources who were judicially determined to be “wholly unreliable.”3 One of Powell’s wholly unreliable sources was a purported “military intelligence expert” who has now admitted that he never actually worked in military intelligence, that the declaration Powell’s clerks wrote for him to sign is “misleading,” and that he “was trying to backtrack” on it.4 After he was discredited, Powell pivoted by presenting his declaration as having been written by a different anonymous source.

I think it’s just that Facebook, Youtube, and cable TV are the most powerful indoctrination sources in human history.

Most Americans are not aware that VK, a hugely popular Russian Facebook clone, is active in hosting American white supremacist organizations and must be included in the social media umbrella that gives rise to cancer such as this. VK’s current ownership (who also now owns many other popular SM) actively censors anti-Putin rhetoric but allows American Nazis full access to post their vomit.

This is an international problem that is not simply going away without active measures. Requiring links to a central fact center and rumor control on FB, Youtube, and others would be a good start.

But I’m sure they’re laughing at us, as well.

Eh, whatever, the US will survive that.

In less than two weeks, the US will have voted out its fascist would-be dictator. And when this president went in front of the TV cameras late on election night to decree that he had won the election, the tens of thousands of people involved in counting the votes ignored him and continued to do their jobs. And when he whipped up his mobs and abused the court system and tried to stage a coup to overturn the election, the courts did their jobs and the Congress did its.

And for any country that tries to whatabout the United States in the next few years regarding Trump’s abuses of democracy, they will be talking to the targets of this abuse, not its perpetrators.

However, the perpetrators need to be punished. No more “look forwards not backwards”, although it’s hard to see that getting any traction after elected representatives were hiding behind their chairs with their gas masks wondering whether they were going to be shot or taken hostage. Because that’s what ignoring fascists gets you.

Gov. Ricketts Declares Roe v. Wade Anniversary as Annual Statewide Day of Prayer to End Abortion (Governor of Nebraska news release page)

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued a proclamation declaring January 22, 2021 as a Statewide Day of Prayer. January 22nd is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a U.S. Supreme Court decision which struck down Nebraska’s laws protecting unborn babies. Governor Ricketts’ proclamation encourages Nebraskans to pray for an end to abortion and a deepening in respect for the humanity of unborn children.

“Nebraska state law states that it is ‘the will of the people of the State of Nebraska and the members of the Legislature to provide protection for the life of the unborn child whenever possible,’” reads Governor Ricketts’ proclamation. “Nebraskans display our pro-life values in a multitude of ways from the crisis pregnancy centers that provide free care for expecting parents to the prayer vigils held across the state every year.”

The Governor’s proclamation encourages Nebraskans “to pray on their own or with others, according to their faith, for an end to abortion.” Nebraskans are also encouraged to take direct action to aid mothers, fathers, and families in need, especially those expecting a child who cannot provide for themselves.

Why don’t you deal with the living, such as the pandemic?

I don’t visit fox (or any other Murdoch) outlets.

I would like to reiterate however:

The people in the room didn’t expect to be in an engagement, but they at least put some thought into it

Does not mean that they were discussing “rules of engagement”, a technical term that means things that were decided by higher authority in advance. They were improvising.

Which means they had no leadership at all.

They should not have been in this position. Like the poor sod who had to pick a baton off the floor and run up the stairs pursued by a mob. Like the officer who found herself surrounded by a mob and had to fight her way out.

Steven Sund, the chief of the Capitol Police was described by Wikipedia on 5/1/2021 as:

Sund is a recognized expert in critical incident management

and on 8/1/2021:

Sund was chief during the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol, during which rioters stormed the Capitol building, being able to reach the chambers of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. Five people died during the ensuing riot, including one of his officers who died the following day as a result of injuries sustained during the riot.

What we know about the 5 deaths in the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol

One more death than Benghazi.

“One adult female and two adult males appear to have suffered from separate medical emergencies, which resulted in their deaths,” Contee said. “Any loss of life in the District is tragic and our thoughts are with anyone impacted by their loss.”

I disagree. Some deaths are earned, like while participating in a coup against my country, and some are less significant than others.

For example, Dawn Wells (Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island) recently died of COVID-related symptoms. That made me sad.

Anecdotally, very few of my real world family and friends get this: Trump is just the warm-up act. McConnell, Cruz, Kasich; shit, even Rubio. They’re taking notes. They’re studying what Trump has done “wrong”, so the next time they get the chance, they’re going to run a non-insane version of Trump.

They know now the GOP can run a fascist and the majority of Republican voters will either kowtow or go “Who do you want me to kill today for your glory?”

I disagree. Some deaths are earned, like while participating in a coup against my country, and some are less significant than others.

For example, Dawn Wells (Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island) recently died of COVID-related symptoms. That made me sad.

Ashli is a perfect of example of: play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Cruz, Lindsey, etc

NBC

recall the GOP warnings in 2015 and 2016 about Donald Trump: “One by one, Republican after Republican warned not just that Trump was wrong on policy or personally immoral, but that he was fomenting violence and undermining democracy by dehumanizing his political opponents and encouraging attacks on protestors.”

“Hypocrisy is obviously a normal feature of politics, from which no elected official is immune. Making alliances with rivals after a bitter campaign is as well.”

“But there’s not much precedent for a party packed with leaders who warned a rival is an immediate danger to democracy, decency, and truth itself and then got on board only to have some of them go on to profess shock that that figure did the very thing they warned all of us they would do

And it’s looking more and more like the National Guards were deliberately told to stand down. And the Secretary of Defense, his Chief of Staff, and the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security were replaced in November with Trump toadies. This is probably what’s moving the needle on impeachment/removal.

Of course, Pence won’t do shit, even though his lord and master was trying to get him killed.

The Conservatives do send us their worst, but I imagine that some of them are good people.

Definitions of “good” vary in time and circumstance. FIL was very good when he was taking armor ashore in N. Africa, Sicily, Anzio; when he broke out of Pusan. He also thought the US needed a military dictator, preferably a Patton.

ProPublica: “The invasion of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was stoked in plain sight. For weeks, the far-right supporters of President Trump railed on social media that the election had been stolen. They openly discussed the idea of violent protest on the day Congress met to certify the result.”

“‘We came up with the idea to occupy just outside the CAPITOL on Jan 6th, leaders of the Stop the Steal movement wrote on Dec. 23. They called their Wednesday demonstration the Wild Protest, a name taken from a tweet by Trump that encouraged his supporters to take their grievances to the streets of Washington

But I do believe there are a handful of elected Republicans who aren’t fascists. The problem is that most of them are, and dog help us if they control both houses of Congress in 2024. That is why Democrats need to treat the 2022 midterms like a presidential election and GOTV, because we know the fascists will.

So has the gallows construction on the grounds been confrimed? I’ve seen close ups of some kind of platform that was built (people are scrawling graffiti on it), but I’ve yet to see a wide shot.

Also, I’m calling it now: you can add the Capitol police to that list. I’m becoming more convinced by the day that Trump made it known he wanted them to stand down when his pack of animals showed up at the Capitol.

I know the numbers were always against them, and I feel bad that they were put in that position. But for fuck’s sake; an angry mob ransacked THE GODDAMN CAPITOL BUILDING and basically only one guy, the one who killed the Air Force woman, discharged his weapon?

DC law also has felony murder component. And it’s not clear if Trump could pardon anyone under DC charges. This is a jurisdiction weirdness thing about DC and where/how to charge and because DC is not a state, there’s Congressional involvement in every law passed by the District. I don’t know how this plays out for potential pardon purposes.

Generally, I don’t. But pushing through a SCOTUS nominee with a week to go against the backdrop of a coup attempt and (likely as not) an impeachment vote in the House? Murkowski’s up in 2022. She’s not going to get anywhere close to that one, and if you saw Romney on Wednesday, he’s not, either. I wouldn’t bet on Toomey as a yes vote, either, in that case.

But having said that, with the shit his wife was spreading on social media Wednesday morning, Thomas really should be resigning or should be forced out at this point. I’m sure Joe will come into office with a list of nominees ready to go if the opportunity arises.

Last year, DeathSantis proposed legislation that would have expanded the state’s “stand your ground” law, which allows people to use deadly force when they feel threatened. Such a provision is not included in the measure released Wednesday. DeSantis had also sought to add violent protests to crimes involving racketeering, an issue also not included in the latest version of the measure:

LOL at Grahams BS: you would think that being in the Senate as long as he has (and (?) knowing Chuck Schumer personally), he would know that old Chuck’s seat is as safe as his own. Yeah, of course Schumer is going to get “primaried from the radical left” - it’s New York, it’s only expected - and said radical leftist is probably going to get the usual 15% or so of the vote - if they’re lucky - and Schumer can coast to an other term.
I mean, jeeez: there weren’t (AFAICT) even any primary opponents for him his last two elections: and Chuck got something like 70% of the vote in 2016. Even Lindsey couldn’t manage that.

I know the numbers were always against [ The Capitol Police ]

After I posted here a comparison with the situation here in France (the Senat and the Parliament are protected by a 1,300 strong Gendarmerie regiment) I went and looked — the Capitol police are supposed to have over 2,200 officers.

How is it, with weeks or months of warning, that “the numbers were against them”? Even without outside support they surely had enough manpower to not leave their officers alone without backup as we repeatedly saw them.

re: #352 Jay C

Right wingers love to claim that anyone to the left of whoever is in office is a radical leftist (they sling this crap all the time). There’s rumblings AOC might try to primary Chuck, and I’m sure Chuck would welcome the challenge.

I expect he’d win rather handily.

Disclaimer: I’ve known Chuck since I was a wee lad and he’s been a part of every single one of my graduation ceremonies since grade school. My dad and him went back to Chuck’s days as a local community board guy (before he entered Congress). It was a running joke in my family when we’d see him at our graduations.

That said, while he’s been good for NY generally, I have not been as impressed with his actions as minority leader and need him to be far more ruthless in dealing with the treasonous GOP than he’s been willing to be to date.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record here but I’m sick of two things- conspiracy theories. They’re what made Trump has relied on from the minute he inserted himself into our political system. And they make our country paranoid and stupid. Secondly, the bullshit mythos to make Trump supporters out to be the angry and repressed working class of this country. And worse is the latter is often pushed by left wingers who want to somehow rationalize Trump’s popularity instead of acknowledging that their class reductionist interpretation of Trump’s appeal is completely wrong. I’m angry about what happened in the Capitol a couple days ago. I was once a Congressional intern and I also have worked for the Department of Interior. Angry at the Republicans who have enabled Trump throughout the past four years. I’m sad too. Sad that our capital city’s streets were barely recognizable to me. And I’m afraid too. I’ve never worried about a full on civil war more. We’re already in one. Rant off.

Hitler’s comic-opera Beer Hall Putsch and subsequent prison was, for him at least, probably the best things that could’ve happened to him. If the putsch had succeeded, the Berlin central government would probably have ended up sending in the Army to put down the rebellion - and Hitler’s political career would’ve ended quite abruptly in front of a wall, facing a firing squad…which, truth be told, would probably have been better for the rest of the world.

Still in the air. I think the PA State Senate just swore in the members and then adjourned/recessed. I don’t think they’re scheduled to resume the session for a few more weeks.

And the contested election is at the lawsuit stage as the loser is challenging a bunch of absentee ballots. (Similar case to a degree to a case in eastern PA where one county allowed ballots with outer envelope issues that another county that was part of the district did not.)

Probably. But with the fascism and anti-communist stuff going on in the 20s and 30s and the relatively weak Weimer Republic Germany going authoritarian in some way might well have been in the cards. Probably less malignant that Nazi Germany, but a “saner” Third Reich might have been a larger problem by surviving longer.

(It’s sort of like positing the Fire Eaters in the early 1860s being saner and opting to fight an extended rear guard action within the laws of the USA against slavery being limited and eventually eliminated.)

That was phony as fuck anyway, and attributed to being some kind of an emergency assassination. The decision was made by a party of one or two, not a committee. Basically, Trump decided there was an opportunity to kill them, and had them killed.

They could have been douchebags that needed to die, but it was another impulse decision on Trump’s part.

ckkatz  Jan 8, 2021 • 9:12:13am

One thought on the slow response to the Capitol Insurrection by the National Guard Bureau and DHS components on Wednesday.

Prior to Wednesday, there had been discussion and concern that organized arms of the Federal Government might try to take over the Capitol Building and essentially decapitate Congress. When it was first announced that a battalion of the DC National Guard was to be mobilized, Mayor Bowser had carefully noted that they Guard would only be in a supporting role.

I do not know, but would suspect that a portion of the delayed Federal response was due to concerns at those agencies that the deployment might either be misused or mis-interpreted.

I also understand that units of the Metropolitan Police trying to respond to the delayed emergency calls for assistance at the Capitol were stuck in traffic jams.

Certainly, the Sergeants at Arms of the House and Senate should have coordinated this much better beforehand. And yes, they should have had all their forces on hand and better deployed for crowd control.

Well, even leaving jurisdictional issues aside, that figure of “2,200 officers” seems to be the total roster number for the USCP: it’s highly unlikely that the force could deploy ALL of them for one event; though one would think that something like a Joint Session - with a large demonstration scheduled for the same time - would have led them to max out their manpower.* And for big demonstrations in DC, the local LE agencies almost always call on help from somebody or other (Federal, District, NG, etc.), if only for traffic control assistance, etc.

*on reflection, it’s likely that they did: but poor party riot planning seems to have proved it inadequate.

Not a legend; the Sacred Band of Thebes was for real.

BTW… that battalion was made up entirely of gay couples. You couldn’t join unless you enlisted as a pair.

Because

1) their shields were curved, fit together with armholes for your sword arm, you’d fight back to back and be entirely armored all the way around. A couple knew each other well enough to coordinate through body language, which made each pair very effective.

and

2) When you’re fighting to protect your beloved, you have an extra dose of adrenaline that makes you faster and stronger. Like a mother lifting a car off her toddler.

In the event, two factors came into play:

1) Capitol Police were distracted by bombs and suspicious vehicles (which turned out to be actual bombs and a terrorist stockpile);
2) Higher-level federal help was denied to them on explicit orders of the Commander-in-Chief.

I think it’s up in the air, in my personal opinion, whether the Capitol Police tried to field an effective response. Obviously, it sounds like some individual officers were terrorist sympathizers, and those asshats need to be removed from the force with immediate effect.

Trial court: Supreme Court
Appellate level: Appellate Division
High court: Court of Appeals.

re: #517 Decatur Deb

It has about 2/3 the population of Alabama.

For comparison, this is the TN court structure:

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the state. The five justices are nominated by the Governor’s Council for Judicial Appointments, appointed by the governor, confirmed by the General Assembly and subject to a retain/replace vote for eight-year terms. The majority of this court’s workload consists of criminal and civil cases appealed from lower state courts.

The intermediate appellate courts — the Court of Appeals and Court of Criminal Appeals — hear civil and criminal cases appealed from the trial courts.

The state’s trial courts include Chancery, Criminal, Circuit and Probate Courts. Judges in these courts are chosen by popular election within their judicial districts.

The fourth level of courts in Tennessee is composed of the courts of limited jurisdiction — General Sessions, Juvenile and Municipal Courts. Their respective counties or municipalities fund these courts.

So, as lawhawk also noted, the Supreme Court in NYS is the rough equivalent of the Chancery, Criminal, Circuit and Probate Courts here in TN and in many other states.

I used the term “legend” since the Battle of Thermopylae in popular culture emphasizes the 300 Spartans and often ignores completely the other Greek forces that were there.

Oh, yeah…

In the context of what we’ve been talking about, the titular “Night Court” would be a city court (as it is here in Nashville as well), a court of limited jurisdiction similar to our General Sessions or Municipal Courts here in TN.

Oh, yeah…

In the context of what we’ve been talking about, the titular “Night Court” would be a city court (as it is here in Nashville as well), a court of limited jurisdiction similar to our General Sessions or Municipal Courts here in TN.

To wit, while “Night Court” here in Nashville indeed operates after normal business hours, the moniker is a bit misleading:

Five judicial magistrates—each possessing the qualifications of a judge—comprise what is known collectively as “Night Court,” a viable and productive extension of the General Sessions Court. The identifying label is derived from the fact that the Magistrates preside over proceedings that take place after normal business hours. But it is misleading in that the panel is actually on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, serving a broad range of functions relevant to the criminal justice process.

In addition to their other job responsibilities, the magistrates:
Conduct probable cause hearings, issue warrants and set bail bonds in criminal cases
Determine probable cause for judicial committals from county psychiatric facilities
Issue Ex Parte Orders of Protection, as well as warrants for violations of such orders
Issue property seizure warrants upon probable cause

Each magistrate is appointed by the court for a one-year term that dictates seven-day work weeks and alternating eight-hour work shifts.

The work schedule is pretty rough, but it can be a stepping stone for someone to move their career farther up the chain.
