Trump’s working harder and quicker to try and restore his twitter access than he was willing to mandate masks or distribute vaccines.

He’s working harder and quicker to try and restore his twitter than publishing his health care plan or infrastructure week.

Of course. Trump never gave a shit about any of the real responsibilities of the office. He just wants to wield power to punish his enemies.

So I’m taking the impeachment won’t have any practical effect?

McConnell says the most likely scenario if the House impeaches Trump in his final 12 days in office is for the Senate to receive a message from the lower chamber notifying it of the articles of impeachment on Jan. 19. That would then give the Senate the option of ordering the House managers to present those articles on the same day.

Yes. At this point, the only real distinction between Republicans and Nazis is that the Nazis succeeded in imposing a one party dictatorship in Germany, and Republicans haven’t managed to do that in the US.

Twitter banning Trump will help with this. At least we’re finally spared this motherfucker’s tweets inciting his dimwitted followers to get more violent.

What should happen between now and the 20th is a federal, state and local law enforcement sweep vs. these domestic terrorists.

Sadly that will have to wait until Biden is in office.

A few thoughts before bedtime:

1. I am worried, very worried, about what appears to be the near-exodus of WH staff. Who’s there guarding state secrets? Hell, who’s there guarding the state china and the library and the furniture against an enraged president with nobody keeping him in check? We got the vandals out of the Capitol before they could do more damage. What about the WH, though? What if he just decides to welcome them in at some point? Would the USSS be able to stop them?

2. The House is clearly on the road to impeachment, and I believe they’ll get there, maybe as soon as Monday. Even if Georgia certifies Ossoff and Warnock quickly to get us to a 50-50 Senate in the next few days, 50-50 isn’t enough while Pence is the tiebreaking vote.

So… can Mitch hold all 50 together long enough to prevent anyone from forcing his hand to expedite a trial and a vote? Seems to me that like her or not, Lisa Murkowski is holding a lot of power, potentially.

(What even IS the process of holding an organizational vote like when control of the Senate is so fluid? I would imagine that if Mitch could have formed new Senate committees and chairs at the start of the session January 3, while he held a 51-48 advantage, he would have done so, right?)

Newt’s rule, if adopted, would take out many Republican elected officials and leaders and very few Democrats. And everyone in Congress knows this.

Part of me would like to see Pelosi put this up for a vote (despite the fact that it’s an insult to Democrats) in order to force Republicans to go on record as supporting terrorism or risk pissing off the terrorist GOP base.

Newt must be going senile to give Pelosi an opportunity like that.

Trump can call into Fox and get on any time for any reason.

Trump can call all the networks for a presser at any time for any reason.

Twitter is what animates him more than anything else.

This is funny. You know how Trump was calling Tuberville and Lee during the insurrection to try to get them to delay the vote? Well, when voting picked back up to challenge Pennsylvania’s count, it seems that Lee wasn’t too thrilled:

As most Republicans and all Democrats rejected the attempt, Senator Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, forcefully turned back the plot, registering his vote as “hell no.”

Hawley and Cruz would celebrate. And either one would likely do as much damage to our democracy as Trump though they probably would have handled the pandemic adequately.

They are typical GOP empty suit politicians. I don’t think they can drive Trump’s atypical voters to the polls.

Meaningless ploy. GOP treats all rules as a set of guidelines at best. And they’d twist said rules if adopted by the Democrats to go after whoever they want and demand that the Democrats themselves hound out of the party whatever target the GOP decides to pick.

There’s two videos on Imgur that appear to give the context for the women who was shot.

I’ll describe it rather than embed - though it doesn’t show the woman who was shot.

First video members of congress were being evacuated to a secure area in a corridor, and a thin door with glass was in the way of the insurrectionists. There are two police guarding the door.

Second video, the door is being broken down, and you can see either police or other security on the far side of the door with a gun aimed at the insurrectionists and there is a gun shot. At the end of that video it joins up with a video I saw before of the woman falling down.

And yes, the police on the near side of the door seem to deliberately get out of the way of the insurrectionists after a phrase is used…..without any physical violence against them.

So yeah, there’s that.

Trump can literally call up any news network in the world and get airtime.

Trump can call into Fox and get on any time for any reason.

Trump can call all the networks for a presser at any time for any reason.

Twitter is what animates him more than anything else.

There’s precisely zero censorship here. These are business decisions not to associate with a treasonweasel and insurrectionist.

Yes but irrelevant.

They are not using words to describe what is actually happening or even in a way accurate to dictionary-denotation of what the word means; they are using words that have social force and emotional connotation, such that they will grant them them leverage to get what they want.

It’s like bad faith, but for the very concept of meaning itself…none of the specific words matter, the new “definitions” exist only as long as they have utility to their needs, and in future discourse they will feel no obligations to argue in keeping with their own language choices.

If “censorship” the word can be used to for companies to do what they want—effectively the word used as scare-term to frighten companies from TOS options—then the definition of “censorship” applies to what companies are doing, and therefore is the definition of censorship.

It’s nihilism’s secret menu item.

It always amazes me just how BAD most of that crap really is. I’m a firm believer in Sturgeon’s Law (90% of everything is crap) but I swear modern religious music kicks that up to 99% unless it’s Christmas related when it hits 99.999%…

The UK Covid crisis looks worse than ours: proportionately more cases/ more deaths than us on a current basis. Wonder if this reflects the more aggressive UK variant of virus and that, as it spreads here, our numbers will explode further. Terrifying thought.

10 years ago today, here in Tucson, Gabby Giffords survived an assassination attempt, but six others didn’t and here we are a decade later and these guys STILL have access to semi-automatic rifles and its not a big deal…..

LGF that day:
Arizona Rep. Giffords Shot, Several Others Killed

Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been shot at a public event. Several others were also shot, and at least five people are dead. At last report, Congresswoman Giffords was still alive but in surgery…

UPDATE at 1/8/11 12:13:01 pm:

Giffords was one of the Democrats listed on this map/enemies list posted by Sarah Palin’s PAC, with gunsights indicating the location of their enemies:

According to reports on Twitter, Palin has deleted this map and others like it from her Facebook page.

Thing is, I don’t actually want right wingers clamped down on with the kind of stupid, heedless force we’re using against the designated Wrong Kind of People, domestic or overseas.

We’re doing overkill, it’s not working as intended, and it’s very expensive.

But we do need to fucking stop with the idea that there’s something authentic and thus valid to all of these right-wing movements that have gotten soft-soap in the last decade.

I was already living in her district at the time, on the red portion. I heard horrible things that day.

Shamelessly stolen from the Reddit thread about Richard Barnett, the dude that sat in Pelosi’s office, propped his feet up on her desk, and who is now in police custody:

I have it on good authority that Barnett is going with the Rick James defense:

Barnett: “I never grinded my feet into Nancy’s desk (Eddie’s couch).”

Judge: “Beg your pardon?”

Barnett: “Yes, I am hoping for a pardon.”

Judge: “There is video evidence, sir.”

Barnett: “Yeah, I remember grinding my feet into Nancy’s desk (Eddie’s couch).”

I miss Chappelle’s Show and Charlie Murphy.

probably my fault ma’am, I chimed in since today was the 10 years since and for me, its still a powerful remembrance and reminder that this political wrestling match has been in progress a long time and throughout that time, we’re still fighting these battles for gun control, healthcare, civil rights, living wages… just feels exceptionally personal today, less abstract.

And next, he’ll be serenading Twitter with…
