Stephen kicks off our first Friday show of the new year with a segment we’re calling “2021: The Week That Felt Like A Year.” Luckily, thanks to our friend Stacey Abrams, there was some good news out of Georgia this week, and our host is finally able to celebrate it. #Colbert #ALateShow #Monologue

So NPR published, and WPR reposted, an article on “how to talk to kids about the Insurrection in Washington” - they get bonus points from me for calling it an Insurrection from the get go - and at WPR they allow comments:

You tell them that we are at war for the survival of civilization against white supremacists and neo-Nazis. You tell them that they can not trust the police because the police are infested with and have become the enemy. You tell them that all Republicans are enemies of civilization. Even as we go to church, warn them that the majority of the So-Called Evangelicals are also the enemy of civilization and interested only in temporal power and money, not in the teachings of Christ Jesus. Anyone who says that non-Christians are bad is the enemy as well.

Finally you tell them that if law enforcement can not succeed it will be time to defend the Union once again and that this time there will be no Reconstruction afterwards. The enemy’s leaders will either be jailed for life or executed. Their forces will be Decimated as the old Romans did it.

Tell them that the enemy wants a civil war. Fine. They started it. We will end it.

Just like everything else they’ve done for the last 4 years, they thought that they were in control of the loons and not the other way around. They incited rebellion, they attacked the very foundations of our democracy, and they created a situation that has resulted in the deaths of several people. And they did it all in the belief that there was not possibility of a negative outcome, believed that they were going to make bank in political capital by continually ramping up the rhetoric and promoting violent action.

In short, the fucked around, and now they’re finding out.

While I understood the frustration over the cops not taking the whole lot to jail Wednesday night, the fact is they wouldn’t have been able to process that many folks onsite in enough time to clear everyone out for Congress to resume the EC certification in a timely manner. As is becoming more apparent as time goes by, the DC cops and the Feds have tech resources at their disposal that are already helping them track down and safely nab them in manners of their choosing, such as cell phone tracking (geofence warrants) and face recognition. That’s in addition to the perps’ own videos, pics, and social media posts, where people are recognizing things that are ID’ing the MAGA chuds.

This may be end being a textbook example of “the wheels of justice grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.”

Heh. So for a good while now, Fark has had a special tag for threads about Trump tweets, which (if you hadn’t seen it) was a roll of toilet paper with the presidential seal on it.

In light of today’s events, they rolled out a new tag to commemorate his twitter accounts being shit-canned: The same pic, only now the roll is empty.

Nothing more than what was said this morning, other then names being named:

Federal agents searched the offices and homes of several Republican Tennessee lawmakers Friday morning, a move that led three legislative staff members to be placed on paid administrative leave.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were at the Cordell Hull building in downtown Nashville, where they were seen searching the office of former Tennessee House Speaker Glen Casada. The legislative offices of representatives Kent Calfee, Robin Smith and Todd Warner were also searched.

During a news briefing Friday morning, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton said Calfee himself was not part of the investigation; however, Calfee’s assistant, Nadine Korby was one of three legislative staff members placed on paid leave following the raids, according to the legislative administration director for the General Assembly.

The director said Carol Simpson, who works as Casada’s assistant, and Holt Whitt, the interim chief of staff for Speaker Sexton, were the other two placed on paid administrative leave.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office of Middle Tennessee said the private residences of Casada, Smith and Warner were also searched, along with the home of Casada’s former chief of staff, Cade Cothren.

It would be good if they could make a LOT of well publicized arrests before the 20th so that Trump seditionists think a couple more times before attacking the capitol building or other statehouses on inauguration day.

Interesting - and telling - that neither the Perdue nor Loeffler campaigns decided to make a stink over the votes in the runoff(s). Insider Kelly lost by 54M I think, so there wasn’t much to try to scrape there, but Ossoff’s margin was only 14M(?) I guess campaigns in GA have figured out that the state has its act together when it comes to tallying elections…

In such dark times, a nation naturally turns to famous moral leaders to show us a ray of light through the darkness that has descended upon us all.

First, we check in with author of The Book of Virtues: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories, former Secretary of Education and “drug czar” Bill Bennett.

Oh, wait…no tweets since 2019.

Ok, nevermind. Instead we should hear from Dennis Prager. He is the author of Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph as well as The Ten Commandments: Still the Best Moral Code and, of course, founder of the world-famous “PragerU”. Surely this human beacon of morality is speaking out on a coup attempt in the United States Capital.

Shoot…no tweets since December.

I guess we are all left to sort this out on our own, without our great authors on the topic or morality.

Fourteen passengers have been banned from future travel on Alaska Airlines after refusing to wear a mask, being rowdy and argumentative and continuing to harass crew members on a flight on Thursday night from Dulles International Airport to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, an airline spokesperson said.

He did comment! And it was what you’d expect. An excerpt:

As of Wednesday morning, Hawley was the model of what a Republican senator was going to look like in the post-Trump era. He cannily understood what the party faithful wanted. Publicity stunts. Owning the libs.

But there are dark specters running through our nation — beasts with shaggy manes and feral teeth. They have the stench of Know-Nothingism, the hot blood of the lynchers, and they ride the winds of nihilistic fury.

Read the history books. They have always been lurking in the shadows of our nation’s greatness. Hawley didn’t just own the libs, he gave permission to dark forces he is too childish, privileged and self-absorbed to understand. Hawley sold his soul to all that is ugly for the sake of his own personal celebrity.

Human beings exist at moral dimensions both too lofty and more savage than the contemporary American mind normally considers. The mob that invaded that building Wednesday exposed the abyss. This week wasn’t just an atrocity, it was a glimpse into an atavistic nativism that always threatens to grip the American soul. And it wasn’t just the mob that exposed this. The rampage reminded us that if Black people had done this, the hallways would be red with their blood.

We are a flawed and humiliated nation, but when well led, we can be more self-sacrificial than we have any right to expect. I despised the sight of the Confederate flags being paraded through Capitol halls, but I loved everything Mitt Romney said and did on Wednesday. Romney showed what moral leadership looks like, and how just a few voices can shift a herd.

Leadership matters. Character matters. The thousands of people who work in the Capitol complex were chased from their chambers or barricaded in their offices by the furies that are ravaging this nation. The shock of this atrocity is bound to have a sobering effect.

I’m among those who think this is an inflection point, a step back from madness. We’re a divided nation, but we don’t need to be a nation engulfed in lies, lawlessness and demagogic incitement.

It does not matter to me. I do not care if Mitch drags it out.

I want it go down in the history books that Trump was the only president who was twice impeached. I want that to fuck his head for the rest of his miserable life.

Pete Hegseth, whose has white supremacist symbols tattooed on his body, is a Major in the D.C. National Guard.

Article 94 UCMJ: Mutiny and Sedition

(a) “Any person subject to this chapter who—

(1) with intent to usurp or override lawful military authority, refuse, in concert with any other person, to obey orders or otherwise do his duty or creates any violence or disturbance is guilty of mutiny;

(2) with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of lawful civil authority, creates, in concert with any other person, revolt, violence, or other disturbance against that authority is guilty of sedition;

(3) fails to do his utmost to prevent and suppress a mutiny or sedition being committed in his presence, or fails to take all reasonable means to inform his superior commissioned officer or commanding officer of a mutiny or sedition which he knows or has reason to believe is taking place, is guilty of a failure to suppress or report a mutiny or sedition.

(b) A person who is found guilty of attempted mutiny, mutiny, sedition, or failure to suppress or report a mutiny or sedition shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.”

Who is subject to the UCMJ or State CMJ depends on their status, but the military doesn’t like seditionists much.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 9, 2021 • 1:33:28am

Grand Designs, one of the few shows about houses that is worth watching, is finally airing another season after being derailed a bit by the pandemic.

The first episode this year features a great looking conversion of a cemetery gate-keeper’s building into a beautiful blend of old and new, in downtown London:

It’s such a far cry from what one finds on HGTV. And I’m not besmirching those on a budget. Few could afford the house featured in this episode of Grand Designs. The client happens to be a descendant of Scottish royalty (the BBC did a show on his cousin, who would be Queen of Scotland if the war in 1745 had gone the other way.) Still, the client had to take out huge mortgages to pay for it.

But HGTV has its “mansion” shows, the latest of which is Self Made Mansions, which attempts to champion the entrepreneurs who have “made it”, so to speak. And of course there is My Lottery Dream Home, which continues to slide down the price structure as finding big lottery winners to come on the show gets harder.

But the real value of Grand Designs is not the cost of houses, but the intent. The houses featured are built with purposes other than just to feed egos (though the current episode’s house is fabulously decorated inside, in a style that is so much more sophisticated than what one finds on HGTV shows.)

And that is one of the real weaknesses of the HGTV shows intended to sell the audience of the idea of how the rich live: nearly all the houses shown are pretty mundane. By which I mean unimaginative, without meaning other than to generate commissions for real estate sales folk.

Exactly. Pretty much everyone believes, or strongly suspects, that Graham is a deeply-closeted gay man, so if it turned out he were in a relationship with another man, for the vast majority of people, it’d be an absolute nothingburger.

But photos or video of him with, let’s say, a 13 or 14-year-old boy? Yeah, that’s some serious shit. That’s “go directly to jail, do not collect $200” serious shit.

By the way, I always get a kick out of “capitalists” deciding to argue with a straight face that a private company like Twitter or Facebook has no authority to enforce its TOS because it is a “public forum” and thus is barred by the 1A from doing so.

Bonus points if they try to argue that one or both companies are “public” because they rely upon public utilities like the power grid or the internet, with total ignorance of how they are effectively making a collectivist argument that no company is private and thus no company may set their own rules but must abide by whatever the majority thinks is right.

The difference between the far right and the far left in America is that you’re probably 1% of everyone reading that leftist material. Back in the early part of the 20th century, the left in America shattered in the wake of the Bolshevik revolution & civil war. It’s never really recovered since then and the 50s & 60s only made it worse.

They show how things should be done, structurally, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, and why you don’t want to settle for minimum code in so many different ways. Restored is another interesting show because they spend a lot of time on trying to restore homes to fit their original design/intent while modernizing for current needs. The guy that leads that show can be annoying though, so your mileage may vary.

Most of the rest of the shows are useful only for eye candy (tile styles that are trendy, etc.) Flipping shows are mostly awful. House Hunters is worse. Love it or List it? Meh.

Oh, Twitter is the public square now?

///

They’ve been making the argument “tech firms are platforms, not publishers” for quite some time now (the broken idea that “platform” means “Hyde Park Speaker’s Corner” or something, while “publisher” can edit content, such as a letters column).

Those definitions change for whatever the conservative fascist needs them to be, such as Sen. Hawley wanting to sue Simon & Schuster or Rep. Nunes wanting to sue a fictitious cow and Twitter.

It’s tied up in the wording of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, where tech platforms cannot be held liable as publishers for libel or crimes.

“Public square” is becoming a thought-stopping device such as “socialism.”

FiveThirtyEight has a thought-provoking article claiming that Trump supporters aren’t necessarily in it for Trump himself; rather, they’re in it because Trump stands for the thing that’s most important to them - white racial dominance. There have been threads of this expressed here, w/r/t Trump-supporting Congresscritters and Senators not necessarily loving Trump himself, but tolerating him because he helps the Republican party keep their hold on power. This goes into the racial aspects of that line of thinking, and produces what we saw on Wednesday - a mob led by Proud Boys with Confederate flags and wearing 6MWNE shirts.

re: #165 raistuumum

I feel there’s some correlation with how some white American leftists have an overt deference to the white members of the working/rural class, but seemingly say little about the black ones.

Yes, it definitely messes up the nice neat class theories when the white working class is pretty much guaranteed to unite with the capitalists against the non-white working class every damn time (and it’s hard to blame false consciousness after decades of this).

However, it’s kind of a chicken-and-egg problem: do committed white lefties ignore race and gender because it messes with their theories, or do they choose these theories because they can then safely ignore race and gender.

Also, it’s easy to argue for accelerationism/”the worse the better” when you’re a young white comfortably-off male and will be alright Jack. It’s easy to argue for unfettered free speech when you’re not the target of constant abuse, and it’s easy to reject half a loaf when you’ve got a fully stocked bakery kitchen in your apartment.

Any possibility of incoming AG Garland using the RICO Act against the GOP? Asking for a friend the rest of the world.

That there’s a wide ranging conspiracy can include RICO charges at the federal level. It also raises question of state crimes in multiple states. There’s liability attaching to all of these actions.

Mind you, these insurrectionists will claim that there was no intent to commit violence, but it’s increasingly clear that the coordination with Trump means that there absolutely was an implicit understanding that they were hoping for the very outcome we saw - violence and mayhem and disrupting the EC process.

Mrs. Fish and I were talking last night about who Trump would be compared to. She suggested Henry VIII; I was like, maybe, but given his complete and utter insanity he’d be more like George III. She countered that Good King George wasn’t really as well-known among Americans; I shot back, wait, the man who was King during the Revolutionary War - you know, only the very founding of our country - isn’t well-known?! (I did have to admit she kinda has a point, what with the state of education in our country.) Then I mentioned that he’s already kinda in Benedict Arnold territory, despite being a general and not a President or King, and the discussion tailed off.

It was a coup d’etat. Anywhere else than in the US, it would be a coup d’etat. So call it that, a coup d’etat. And call those involved instigators or accomplices to a coup d’etat. Maybe terrorists.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but what happened at the Capitol is at the very least sedition where I come from and where I live. And for some, it would be FUCKING high treason. Ten to life in Sweden, even harsher sentences in Finland.

The list of actionable crimes committed is a long one.
Insurrection.
Felony murder.
Conspiracy (including RICO).
Accessory to felonies.
Misprison (for failing to report crimes being plotted)
Treason
Sedition
Trespass
Destruction of federal property

Specific arrests may also include
Possession of firearms.
Possession of explosive devices.

Literally, we’re talking about dozens of potential federal and state felonies attaching here.

The one here that should be attaching to every last of these “law and order types” is felony murder. That’s the one that every jury should have to consider. A cop was murdered by these insurrectionists. Their intent was clear. Their goal was clear. The organizers knew and had reason to know this would happen.

As coconspirators, this murder is on them. Juries don’t take kindly to those who kill cops. Even law enforcement orgs don’t take kindly to their own being murdered (even as some LEOs are clearly part of the conspiracy). Prosecutors need to be unleashed nationwide to deal with this.

Dems after that holding the House and Senate, even with Republican Governors, got Civil Rights done and a robust safety net and a broadening of rights in General. And it was our budgets and posture that held off Stalin and the Russians and Mao until the wall fell and later folks moderated their stance to mere greed.

They are revising their town one home at a time. And it’s working.

I’d love to see more of that throughout the country.

After my first few flights, I kinda adjusted to it. It’s funny, for someone who has a pretty serious fear of heights, I love being in the air. I have definitely had my share of butt-clench moments with some turbulent rough landings, but that’s a side effect of flying in the winter in and out of Minneapolis.

I don’t think many of us disagree, at this point. Hell, we have other countries ON RECORD as saying that it was an attempted coup. If they’re saying it, they would know better than us; it’s our first time, after all.

No it’s not. Our first time we were successful; we set off fireworks on the 4th of July to celebrate it. Our second time, in 1861, was not so successful, but it took a lot of blood and a lot of money and several years to beat it back. Wilmington 1892 was geographically limited, but it was definitely a successful coup. Same with New Orleans around the same time.

That speaks most strongly to pilot disorientation. It’s a bit reminiscent of Air France 447, where the pilots got confused because their instruments were disagreeing with what they were seeing, and they couldn’t make sense of any of the data in time for them to recover.

Keep in mind that the 737 series is the most common airliner in the world with over 10,500 having been built. Law of averages suggests it will be involved in a significant share of crashes, maintenance problems and yes, uncovered design errors because of that. Also, most accidents aren’t due to design or manufacturing problems, but weather, poor maintenance, and pilot or navigational error.

His text.

Swastika. If I tie a swastika on my sleeve and go out into the streets of Ukrainian cities, what kind of reaction will I get from the people who meet me? Will I have time to explain its meaning before they hit me with something heavy on the head, or spit at me, or call me a fascist? I’m sure I won’t be in time. I won’t have time to tell you that the swastika is one of the ancient and archaic solar signs, an indicator of the apparent movement of the Sun around the Earth and dividing the year into four parts - four seasons. A sign that fixes two solstices: summer and winter - and the annual movement of the Sun. Can I explain that the swastika is a peaceful and bright symbol? Light - until thousands of years after its appearance, the Chancellor of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, made the swastika a symbol of the Third Reich. And then, under the banners with the swastika, the Nazis began to exterminate the peoples of Europe. The swastika has become a symbol of fascism and death, FOREVER. And for people with historical memory, this symbol will NEVER be associated with goodness and light anymore. And now about the St. George ribbon. With what fright did she become a symbol of victory in the Second World War? It was never used in the military decoration of the Red Army. But, on the contrary, it was widely used in the Russian liberation army of Vlasov. And now, during the Russian aggression against our country, the St. George ribbon has become a distinctive sign of the occupiers and collaborators. She is tied to those who are currently robbing and killing, torturing and humiliating Ukrainian citizens in eastern Ukraine. Those who rip the bellies of people trying to protect the national flag of Ukraine. On those who shoot, peaceful marches in the name of the country’s unity. On those who, with hysterical voices and who have fallen into absolute psychosis, calls for the introduction of the troops of a hostile state into Ukraine. For me, the facts I have cited are quite enough to put a bold equals sign between the swastika and the St. George (Colorado) ribbon. And to deal with the bearers of these hallmarks in a wartime manner.

RT must have been there, I hope later somebody has time to search through the video evidence and see how they were treated. Unlike CNN, probably cheered ;)

You’d think they’d be there like flies on shit. There’s a bunch of Ruptly videos floating around, but I’m not sure who took them.

I’d be more concerned about intelligence agents. If you’re an adversary and see one of these events coming (like the storming of the Stasi archives in East Germany), you’d be pretty stupid not to at least try to get your guys to the front of the scrum. There are reports from Congress that some of the rioters knew exactly where to go to some rather obscure offices, and at least two classified (SIPRNET) computers are missing.

I do think we’ll get video of all the rioters, even the ones who didn’t post it all over social media or just leave their phones on so they could be identified on the cell network.

I agree with Nance. I wrote this last night. I used the less graceful metaphor of Hydra infiltrating SHIELD in Captain America: Winter Soldier, but the effect is the same. The Ghandi incident is a real world incident.

Christ, it was in the news last week that the Secret Service is bringing back guys who worked with Biden because they can’t trust some of the ones who’ve been close to Trump.

The inauguration should be in a secure location. Shit, two secure locations: one for Biden, one for Harris. Pelosi should be in a third. There’s just too many stories of cops and the military being thick with MAGAts and white supremacists to consider anything else.

My fucking congressman, he needs expelling forthwith. AND it would explain why Eric Jones of Evident Life Church was so for sure that something was going to happen.

Ali Alexander, a political activist who has organized pro-Trump rallies, including one of the demonstrations that converged on the Capitol lawn Wednesday, accused the left of “trying to push us to war.” In late December, Alexander told followers on Periscope that he and three GOP congressman — Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs of Arizona and Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama — were planning something big.

The article goes on to say Biggs denied it, but I don’t believe it.

You know, the whole monopoly/anti-trust argument re: limits of free speech merits at least thinking it through (I’m not yet sure about the conclusions and consequences, but yes, the ways giant corporations like Google or Facebook engage in political moderation of their platforms and how this affects free speech in a broader sense (or in the future, when dudebros in the mold of Elon Musk or Peter Thiel unfortunately may have more to say about that) should be analyzed thoroughly; as we don’t want to end up on the wrong end of this argument in 10-20 years).

But what I don’t accept is this argument coming a) under the current laws, because under them this does not legally limit free speech; b) from the wild-West capitalists/free-market fundies calling anyone to the left of them commies.

A revolution is about ideas; a coup is about a person. There is a big difference.

Brooks must face the sanction in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. Despite the relatively plain language of that section of 14A, a glance through history shows that a lot of ex-Confederates - including many of those “oath-taking” officials who were the presumed target of the “disability” provision - went on, after the war, to hold US/State offices again, so one presumes that the enforcement of Section 3 was likely highly selective, or had some sort of loophole, or (most-probably) conscientiously ignored in the name of national comity (and white supremacy, of course).

I think he’s banned on Pornhub too, which has gotta hurt.

So if the President wants to be heard he has no other option than to give a speech or call a press conference? OMG!!!

One thing that has given me hope is how fast the terrorists are being IDd and arrested. Mr. Podium Guy has probably fucked his family over for awhile to come, especially if Mrs. Podium Guy finds herself unable to practice medicine any more. I know, it’s Florida, but still, if she loses her job, that’s not gonna go over big with her or the kids. In addition to jail time, he may have to hire a divorce attorney too. My empathy is at ZERO with these brave souls. Who the second they get caught backpedal so fast they fall right off the cliff.

I wonder how many of them have sung like little birdies and ratted out their buddies who were there. What I really want is to find out who shit all over things, put their pictures everywhere and offer to send them coupons for a dollar off Depends.

So what of the police officers who apparently also came as protesters and showed their badges once inside?

And why were people allowed to leave carrying articles with them? I can understand (somewhat) the difficulty of arresting them all but not searching them for stolen items?

All very odd and needs to be answered.

There are still people who insist it was an “inside job” and police let Antifa infiltrators in to do the burning and looting while the Trump supporters, obviously just buoyed along by the adrenaline, merely goofed off and took selfies…

re: #335 Mattand

Ugh, I need to get off Facebook for various reasons.

One prime one? Arguing with a grandma in her early 60s who, despite being a registered Dem and served on her town’s Dem committee for three years, insists on both-siding Wednesday’s coup with BLM.

I guessed she was either a Trump supporter or denying reality. She came back with the Dem street cred. I was like “The fact you did all that and are still both-siding Trump’s attempt to kill Pelosi with a mob kinda makes it worse.”

I apologized to the thread owner, but goddamn; that site does not help my piece of mind. I need to find better ways to vent. The fact that my “Someone is wrong on the internet” syndrome flares up at times like this doesn’t help.

So, quick follow up:

Turns out the person I was pushing back on used to nominally be a Democrat until Obama got elected and then went full MAGAt. Her being a racist and anti-abortion nut certainly had her primed.

Also turns out I had her correctly pegged as a Trump voter who knows what happened was wrong, but couldn’t bring herself to admit it. So she came at me with “How dare you say that to me, I’m a Democrat!”

Fuck. Her. And her lack of moral compass.

“Biden should investigate 2020 election!”

Remember how Trump convened a commission to prove his claims in 2016 that he had won the popular vote and Hillary had just stolen all those other 3 million votes?

Remember what that commission found?

Same thing they would find this year.

Which, TBH, is why I think that it is a good idea for President Biden to go ahead and establish some “blue-ribbon commission” to look into “voter integrity” - what they are likely to find, as you have noted, is a notable lack of the sort of “massive fraud” President Asshole and his creatures have been bleating about since November. And getting an official reassurance as to the security of states’ voting systems and practices can only be a plus: especially if will officially call bullshit on Republicans’ blatherings about “stolen” elections….

Rush is one of the biggest parts of the goddamn problem. He has been stoking the fires of conservative hatred for all things progressive for decades. His megaphone is the reason the Clinton conspiracies went mainstream - if it wasn’t for Rush, we might well have had President Hillary Clinton in 2016. I hope he suffers in agony for weeks before he dies. I don’t care if that makes me a bad person, he’s the only person on my list of people I actually wish harm upon for what he’s done to me personally and to my family over the last 25 years.

had a grandfather die of lung cancer. I don’t care how big of a dick rush is. i don’t want him to suffer more than he has to. as an anglican, i’m fairly confident god has something really entertaining for him already set up and waiting. Well, no, not that last part. if it were already set up and waiting, that would make God a Calvinist, which according to Calvin, he is.
