So I’m just seeing that the Browns won their first play-off game, and I’m sitting here wondering if 2020 will get the last laugh by seeing the Browns make their first Superb Owl appearance ever.

Watched The Majority Report with Sam Seder on YouTube. The rotting corpse that is Rush Limbaugh endorsed the violent attack on the Capitol, comparing the terrorists favorably to the Founding Fathers. He can’t die soon enough.

Text for copypasta’ing:

“The rioters were Antifa and BLM!” Oh please. If they were, there would’ve been medics, a first aid tent, a soup kitchen, AND a squad of gays handing out free snacks and handwarmers. Bitch we know how to protest.

Got this via a friend in Germany. Props to the original author, whoever they may be.

Another reason you know it wasn’t ANTIFA etc. no taco trucks on every corner.

It’s the usual BS: Anything that they want to take credit is due to “patriots,” anything they want to avoid blame for is “Antifa/BLM.” And they’re leaning heavily upon a video of a guy being “stopped” from busting up a window as their “proof.”

Exactly. You also have the fact that AntiFA and The Iron Front has spent the better part of a century fighting Fascists, so we have the organization down to an art, both in terms of logistics, and what to expect from the opposition (feel free to add that to your version, after “Bitch we know how to protest”).

Could this be the “undoing” defence mechanism? Invoking Auntie Fa in order to make your fuckup go away? I’ve observed a lot of lower-tier psychological defences from these guys…

A train of thoughts with some assembly required that occurred to me after I posted that:

Can we do something similar to what was done after WWII in Germany, where they were made to tour the KZ’s? I would think that the best way for them to cope long term is to make amends for the damage they’ve done. With the somber comments that “I’m not going to lie to you. You may have to do amends for the rest of your life,” or “You’re lucky, you know. You didn’t get as far as actually try to exterminate people at scale. So you won’t have to tour the concentration and death camps.”
Look at what examples there are of the harm caused by capitalism and Trumpism. See if there is a way to safely let recovering Trumpists and capitalists to help as a means to do amends for the harm they cause. That sort of stuff is what I’m thinking.
Being exposed to the harm they’ve caused up close and personal, the obvious shortcomings they refused to see, being shown the way to do amends, that is a step in the direction of recognizing “I dun fucked up…”

They’re still writing fanfiction even as their whole fantasy world comes crumbling down.

They’re still writing fanfiction even as their whole fantasy world comes crumbling down.

People will be caught under the debris of said fantasy world. Also, consider that us “oh aaah dangerous lefties” instead gloating and sending them of to the Gulags attempt to show a modicum of compassion, and help them with proper ways to cope with what they’ve done will have a profound psychological impact.

I will never get over people bitching about how “expensive” the items in our lobby’s market are. We’re not some tiny motel located out in the Mojave Desert, there’s a Wawa, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell just across the street. You have options, we’re not strong-arming you into buying our stuff. If you’re too lazy to exercise those options, then (IMHO) you need to stop bitching about everything being “expensive.”

And if I hear one more asshole complain about how “expensive” it is for a bottle of water when he’s got a functioning kitchen in his room, I may have to hurt someone.

Parler had every opportunity to made clear that they did not endorse or condone militant Trumpism, they could have cleaned house and gotten in contact with the proper authorities, and they could have taken steps to prevent their service from being used to plan and coordinate acts of domestic terrorism.

Instead, it appears they decided that being the “Twitter alternative” was too good an opportunity to pass up.

3 million jobs have been lost since Trump took office in 2017, the worst job record under any presidency since 1939. (But the stock market is at record highs

One of the first big decisions Biden will have to make is whether to pump another half a trillion into the Stock Market to keep it artificially buoyed up or whether to let it crash and recover from its artificial sugar high.

This has probably been posted on another thread, but I cannot see any reason these different orgs won’t be defined as terrorist orgs, and be subject to having all their money seized or frozen. Remember after 9/11?

Let’s start with Trump’s little moneymaker to “Stop the Steal,” since there wasn’t a steal. It had at least a couple hundred million weeks ago.

Hurt them financially. There’s every reason to freeze their fucking money. They are literally funding terrorism with it.

One of the ironies of the very rich right-wingers (like the Mercers) is that they wouldn’t be caught dead around the knuckle-dragging Trumpers with their Confederate-decorated pickups and misspelled signs.

The rubes are indeed rubes. That’s not an especially cruel comment. Yes, a bit hard-hearted, but damn, the Trumpers are beyond having a good word said about them.

We’ll have to see where the numbers and risks go after Panhandle Public Health District updates their information on Monday afternoon.

For the moment, cities and villages at severe risk of transmission of Covid-19 are:

Morrill (Scott’s Bluff County, on the border with Wyoming), Bridgeport (Morrill County seat), Oshkosh (Garden County seat), Harrison (Sioux County seat), and Gordon (Sheridan County seat).

All other towns are at high risk of transmission except the same three villages with no cases (mine, and Lisco and Lewellen in Garden County).

Total cases: 7,909 (9% of the population of the Panhandle)
Active cases: 350
Most by age: 40-49, then 30-39, then 20-29
Deaths: 136 (+16)
In hospital: 20

PPHD now has a sign-up for Covid-19 vaccinations for those seventy-five and older, noting it will be several weeks.

Weekly positivity rate: 27.5% (peak was 64.4% on November 1)

I always see her as a Scarlet O Hara type, willing to put up with a psychopath, flattering him if necessary because it beats going back to Slovenia with a suitcase filled with stolen designer clothes and a future of a counter girl. Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 11, 2021 • 4:49:04am

The December housing report is out for San Diego county.

House availability keeps dropping. There is so little stock for sale that median prices keep rising ridiculously.

This cannot be sustained. There has to be a reckoning some day, some day soon.

The idea of making mortgaged houses safe from repossession sounds nice… and it is understandable in a crisis.

But there is a downside that can’t be escaped: it means people are not moving, which means houses aren’t being put up for sale.

Which means dramatically higher prices, because those with money outbid those with less money.

The median house price in the county is at least 10x the annual wage average for a single person, probably over.

Right now, only couples who are professionals and thus two-income households can afford to buy a house in this market.

When the pandemic is over and lenders can once again take back housing for which the mortgage is over-due, the banks will be stuck with inventory. That would be no problem for the lenders if they could get today’s prices, but if they dump the houses on the market in a short period then prices will crash (as they need to.)

But then all those people who had to buy in 2020 will be upside down in their houses (if they needed a mortgage.) Another losing scenario.

Anyway, these are problems which are going to explode over the next year or two.

And yes, I expect an economic crisis, partly of Trump’s doing, but it will be blamed on Biden.

And with EXIF data from the Parlel leak, you can corroborate that information with pictures taken with said phones inside the Capitol….

Maybe we can find another use for all those cages they were using for migrant children. Since these people don’t care about social distancing, herd them together and process them whenever.

Someone also mentioned that, considering the structure of the Capitol, they’ve probably got picocells all over the place which would very precisely indicate location of transmitting phones. I’d assume that would snag the vast majority of the traitors, but the serious ones may have taken precautions.

Yep, though if it’s any consolation, Hungary’s Orban seems to be in trouble and it’s possible when elections are held next year that his Fidesz party might not do so well and could end up in opposition status.

And Czech PM Andrej Babiš views the EU as little more than a source of subsidies for his agricultural empire. Which he (laughably) claims he doesn’t own anymore. Even though he’s registered as the sole owner of Agrofert in both British and German corporate registries.

I know it’s been said many times before, but I’ll say it again: the insurrectionists don’t care if Trump doesn’t make their lives materially better, they just want him to make progressives’ lives worse. They think he needs four more years to really get down to work.

You know what cracks me up about this one in particular? They always accuse liberals of busing protesters or voters across state lines to interfere. So once again, projection, thy name is Republicans.

Morning Lizardim from the mildly warm wild north country. This month is typically when we see high temperatures in the teens, single digits, and even below zero, with low temperatures sinking as low as -40 degrees (F or C, take your pick). None of that is happening; the high this week, on Wednesday, is supposed to be 37 degrees F (2.8 degrees C), with lows still above zero degrees F. How go things among the lizardfolk on this cloudy and mild winter Monday?

We have your weather at the moment. Wanna trade?

In one of the more grimly ironic twists of the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects in Czech Republic, it’s estimated by epidemiologists that by the middle of March, we might well have achieved herd immunity.

Because if their forecasts are accurate, at least 60 % of the population will have had it by then.

Brutal report from CNN:

….Professional lighting, the sort used for photography and videography, could be seen through the windows of the White House. “Photos were being taken of rugs and other items in the Executive Residence and the East Wing,” a person familiar with the day’s activities with the first lady told CNN. Trump — who, as CNN has reported, has expressed interest in writing a coffee table book about decorative objects she has amassed and had restored in the White House — was overseeing the photo project, said the source, with her remaining time in the White House dwindling.

Just blocks away, domestic terrorists were swarming the US Capitol in a riot that her husband had incited earlier that day at the rally. While images of the mob breaking into the Capitol consumed the airwaves, the first lady was focused — with the White House chief usher, Timothy Harleth — on getting the shoot completed. Both the media, including CNN, and members of her staff were asking if Trump had plans to tweet a statement of calm, or a call to stop the violence — something she had done a handful of times months earlier during the protests surrounding the police killing of George Floyd. She did not.
Instead, the first lady was quiet, and has remained so. Her disinterest in addressing the country was indicative of being “checked out,” said another White House source, who added, “she just isn’t in a place mentally or emotionally anymore where she wants to get involved.”
Except with the furniture….

I agree that it is a good time to discuss the role that monopolies like Twitter, FB and YouTube play in the public and political discourse, but in the meantime, just remember what our friend Mitt said: “Corporations are people, too!”

A bit of news about our old buddy Adnan Oktar (aka Harun Yahya, a Turkish creationist and cult leader who seemed to be under the impression that he was the Mahdi 🙄):

An Istanbul court on Monday handed Adnan Oktar, the head of a cult that is considered a criminal organization by prosecutors, some hefty prison terms.

He was among the 236 defendants on trial since September 2019 and had faced a diverse array of charges, from espionage to sexual abuse.

A prison term totaling 1,075 years was handed down to Oktar in the trial where 78 people, including the cult leader, were in detention.

The 64-year-old Oktar and dozens of his followers were arrested in simultaneous nationwide raids in 2018. A 499-page indictment portrays him and others as a criminal gang thriving on blackmail, extortion, money laundering and a string of other crimes.

Among more serious charges are attempting political and military espionage, torture, abduction, illegal wiretapping, fraud, threats, attempted murder and forgery, as well as sexual abuse.

Someone on Wife’s FB traffic found a use for nazis:

“In case you are confused, here is some guidance: Huge numbers of our population believe in a complete alternate reality. Alternate facts as it were. But just as intensely as I believe they are deluded, they think I am the one who is deluded. Maybe I am.

So how can I be confident in my perception? It can be quite difficult. But I have found that in times of confusion, particularly when emotions are running high and creating tunnel vision, the presence of Nazis can be an extremely helpful indicator.

If I am attending a local demonstration or event and I see Nazis…neo-Nazis, miscellaneous-Nazis or the latest-whatever-uber-mythology-Nazis, I figure out which side they are on. And if they are on my side of the demonstration? I am on the wrong side.

It is tough to argue moral equivalence when I am standing next to a Nazi. Look to my right. Is there a guy wearing a 6MWE (6 million wasn’t enough) t-shirt? I am on the wrong side.

Look to my left. If that guy is wearing a Camp Auschwitz t-shirt? Wrong side. Speakers referring to things Hitler got right? Wrong side.

Team-spirit face paint and hat with horns? This is an unclear indicator that could mean anything but safest to keep my distance from that guy even at a football game.

But I can always, always, always, rely on the presence of Nazis as a guiding light through a fog of disinformation. Some things are relative, but evil and good are absolute.”

You don’t just download 70TB of data. In fact Amazon has an appliance called a Snowball for moving 50TB of data. 70TB would require two snowballs or a server truck called a Snowmachine.

You can buy off-the-shelf NAS boxes that will hold 50TB (that’s terabytes) of data for not much money, the Snowballs are for petabytes of data (thousands of terabytes).

The Snowmachine is to allow data to be moved physically from a customer data centre cluster to the cloud if high-speed links aren’t available — a 1Gb/s network connection would take three hours to transfer 1TByte of data and 3000 hours or over four months to transfer a PetaByte. However it’s trivial to move 70TB of data sideways in an AWS cluster and then it can be downloaded at will or searched in-situ using cloud-based tools. I’d expect it to be downloaded to multiple locations ASAP though in case Parler gets the lawyers involved and AWS is required to sequester the copies.

The “photo project” would also be an useful way of getting an inventory and subsequent valuation of what there is to have in the place before decisions are made towards what items will be packed and shipped out (to Florida, or offshore?) in the next week or so.

And then said inventory and associated computer files can be inconveniently misplaced so that it is difficult to track what was there before 2016 and what was not, and what pre-2016 items are now missing.

I’m reading the details of the Parler hack/leak. It was a pretty unsophisticated operation, as far as hacks go; they took advantage of the fact that Twilio, a commonly used third-party service provider, de-platformed them to work around Parler’s authentication, then effectively set up a botnet to download all of the data in a distributed fashion.

Most times, the Archive Team runs into DDOS protections when they capture sites, but not today.

Commanders at Fort Bragg are reviewing Captain Emily Rainey’s involvement in last week’s events in the nation’s capital, but she said she acted within military regulations and that no one in her group broke the law.

“I was a private citizen and doing everything right and within my rights,” Rainey told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Rainey said she led 100 members of Moore County Citizens for Freedom, which describes itself online as a nonpartisan network promoting conservative values, to Washington to “stand against election fraud” and support Trump. She said the group attended the rally but she didn’t know of anyone who entered the Capitol and that they were headed back to their buses hours before an emergency curfew took effect.

They said the built a Docker image to run the data harvesting bots, so my working theory is that they provisioned a NAS or a cloud storage account (if they have the resources to provision Docker agents to harvest data, they probably have the resources to afford a cloud VM with that much storage for a few days until they can download it all).

LINCOLN — A state senator is seeking answers about what role Nebraska’s attorney general might have played in robocalls issued by a national group urging protesters to descend on the U.S. Capitol last week.

A day before the Capitol was stormed and ransacked, the fundraising arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association — of which Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson is a member — issued robocalls urging supporters of President Donald Trump to march to the Capitol and “stop the steal,” NBC News reported over the weekend.

The story prompted State Sen. Megan Hunt of Omaha to file a public records request with Peterson’s office on Sunday, asking whether public funds were used to pay for his membership in the group or were used to help pay for the robocalls. Hunt also asked for any correspondence Peterson had with the group or its fundraising affiliate, the Rule of Law Defense Fund.

Backup was denied, Capitol Police chief says.

Two days before Congress was set to formalize President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund was growing worried about the size of the pro-Trump crowds expected to stream into the District of Columbia in protest.

To be on the safe side, Sund asked House and Senate security officials for permission to request that the D.C. National Guard be placed on standby in case he needed quick backup.

But, Sund said Sunday, they turned him down.

An actual “stand down” order. Where all the Benghazi Ribbon fucktards now?

Those MAGA protesters are really not good at this.

I’m by no means an experienced protester, but I’m well aware of some of the basic rules: Travel as light as possible, try to keep your face covered if you can, bring proper equipment/first aid items to deal with injuries, tear gas and the like, take public transportation to the protest site if possible.

And most importantly: Leave your damn phone AT HOME or, if you have to have one with you, get a burner phone

They’re busy trying to prevent impeachment and removal of Trump who ordered it.

They’re busy deflecting from the armed insurrection by kvetching over Twitter banning Trump and their social media follows dropping as Twitter bans bots and QAnon (long overdue).

They’re busy trying to place onus on everything on Biden and Democrats in the name of “reconciliation and unity”.

This isn’t the same thing as being disbarred. That’s handled by the Appellate Division of the State Courts.

NYSBA’s bylaws state that “no person who advocates the overthrow of the government of the United States, or of any state, territory or possession thereof, or of any political subdivision therein, by force or other illegal means, shall be a member of the Association.” Mr. Giuliani’s words quite clearly were intended to encourage Trump supporters unhappy with the election’s outcome to take matters into their own hands. Their subsequent attack on the Capitol was nothing short of an attempted coup, intended to prevent the peaceful transition of power.

Does a newspaper or magazine have a right to reject a letter to the editor? Yes? So does Twitter.

The logical conclusion (and the reason Section 230 exists) is they must be forced to host child exploitation photographs.

Dominion Voting has followed up its cease-and-desist letters with lawsuits. Unlike Sydney Powell, the radio company, Cumulus Media, has deep pockets.

From today’s electoral-vote.com

…they have no intention of settling at all. They want to put her on the witness stand and ask her for the proof of her accusations. An official legal verdict that she was lying is more important than any amount of money they could squeeze out of her.

But Dominion has said this lawsuit may not be the last one. It has specifically not ruled out suing Donald Trump, who may not have the $10 billion he claims he has, but surely has more than Powell. He also claimed Dominion’s machines were rigged. More telling is the letters its lawyers sent to Lou Dobbs, Sean Hanity, and other Fox News personalities demanding that they keep any evidence they have that would be relevant in a potential lawsuit. Fox has a lot deeper pockets than Powell or Trump.

Trump and Fox might not be the only other potential targets. OANN, NewsMax, and Sinclair Broadcasting have also spread lies about Dominion and could get sued. If Dominion were to win such suits, it could change the media landscape. Fox could probably absorb a $1 billion judgment and survive, but the smaller ones might go under as a result

Can’t seem to keep her nose out of bullshit.

Rainey said she led 100 members of Moore County Citizens for Freedom, which describes itself online as a nonpartisan network promoting conservative values, from North Carolina to Washington to “stand against election fraud” and support Trump. She said the group attended the rally but she didn’t know of anyone who entered the Capitol and that they were headed back to their buses hours before an emergency curfew took effect.

Rainey, 30, is assigned to the 4th Psychological Operations Group at Fort Bragg, according to Maj. Daniel Lessard, a spokesman for 1st Special Forces Command. Known as PSYOPS, the group uses information and misinformation to shape the emotions, decision-making and actions of American adversaries.

Rainey made headlines back in May after she posted a video online of her pulling down caution tape at a playground that was closed under North Carolina’s COVID-19 restrictions. - CBS News

Dailymfail has a very extensive page about the terrorist attack including, about halfway down, a running list of: THE RIOTERS AND THEIR CHARGES SO FAR

100%. Fuck unity. Fuck reconciliation. Fuck turning the other cheek. Fuck being tolerant. Fuck taking the high road. It’s time for cashing in the receipts. It’s time for punishment. It’s time for a day of reckoning.

For years the entire left-wing knew this shit would eventually happen and we were dismissed and ignored and insulted. Every Dem politician needs to grow balls for the next two years, while they have the House and Senate, and play hard ball.

I need a cat to pet right now.
:)

To sharpen the point
Its about appropriate punishment
Applying the rule of law evenly
Acknowledging what happened
Affixing personal responsibility

A day of reckoning by shining a light on it
and declaring justice for all
Those perpetrating
and those victimized

Not retribution

Because liberty and justice for all means all people all the time or it means nothing

Any thoughts if one was used for the no fly lists and rounding up some of the Capitol terrorists? The no fly lists seems awfully quick IMO.

I’ll answer with another question. Could the airlines establish an immediate no-fly list based on customers acting out on the flights into DC? I’m assuming that the airlines can have them on a no-fly list before they even leave the inbound aircraft.

Sounds like a good idea, but probably not a practical application IRL: unfortunately, there are too many Republicans in the House to able to “shun” 130 of them, and still be able to get anything done*.

However, sending a few of the ringleaders to Coventry (preferable to jail, but YMMV) might work as an alternative plan -

* How much ANY Republicans are going to be likely to want to “get done” in a Democratic Administration is probably near-zero in any case.

Though it to a degree it prevents GOP members from getting easy “Look what I did for you my lowly constituents!” wins via cosponsoring bills naming post offices and joining popular relief bills. And it freezes out the radicals from claiming bipartisanship when they themselves are not really interested in it beyond paying lip service to same.

Again, I do think that it is high time to discuss the role that monopoly players like Twitter, FB and YouTube have assumed in public and political discourse.

But until then, they remain private entities. They cannot discriminate based on race, sex or religion but they can set their own terms of use and expect users to abide by them.

An overwhelming 71% of Americans say they don’t trust Sen. Ted Cruz to defend democracy, according to new @ABC News/Ipsos poll, including 47% who don’t trust him at all.

Doesn’t matter what the nation thinks about Cruz, what matters are the voters in Texas, who voted him back in over Beto O’Rourke (that’s the candidate my sister wanted for president)

re - enforcing existing laws
from today’s electoral-vote.com
how biden can raise a shit-ton of revenue without raising taxes (which he’s gonna do anyway)

… And he can do that without new legislation. The key is to enforce existing law much better. In particular, the IRS rarely audits midsize businesses and closely held partnerships (especially those involved in real estate). Nor does it do well at auditing the very rich: Fewer than 7% of tax returns showing income of more than $10 million were audited in 2018. This lack of auditing has allowed these people and entities to get away with large deductions that are probably illegal.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that increasing the IRS’ audit budget by $20 billion over a decade would increase revenue by $60 billion. That is $40 billion for free. Other people believe the payoff would be far larger. A study by former IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti, University of Pennsylvania professor Natasha Sarin, and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers projects that an additional $100 billion in enforcement spending combined with a change in strategy, could bring in $1.2-1.4 trillion in new revenue, a multiplier of 12x to 14x. A trillion dollars is serious money, even if Biden raises taxes on the rich.

beef up the irs
audit S corps vigorously
audit >$10m vigorously

the net could be billions or possibly a trillion

Antitrust: AWS isn’t the only cloud provider out there. They could go to Microsoft or Google if they weren’t shitheads. I imagine that the Parler morans will try to prove collusion between the Big Tech giants; I laugh at the mere notion.

Breach of Contract: LOL Terms of Service. I don’t know how timeliness plays into this; can it be proven that Amazon knew about potentially violating content? I’d suspect not. This could be an interesting legal battle of, “You should’ve known we were shitheads from the get-go.” “Yeah, but we didn’t, so we took action as soon as we found out.”

Unlawful Business Interference: This one gets thrown out pretty much right off the bat. There’s already a precedent - set, ironically, by our favorite loony Laura Loomer - that using a platform for interacting with, and even doing business with, the “general public” does not create unlawful business interference when your account is terminated.

Companies are terrified of future violence promoted by these platforms and then being sued for providing assistance. Organizations with deep pockets know that they will bear the brunt when lawsuits come around, even if their role is marginal. The Sidney Powells and Lin Woods of the world have limited assets — but the Amazons? and Twitter? Much money there.

Exactly. If a no-confidence vote carries the day, the current government ceases to exist at that very moment and a caretaker government is negotiated and appointed until new elections can be held (usually 60 to 90 days, at least here in Czech Republic).

Unfortunately, I would expect a lot of that. That’s part of the reason why the true Q believers are so desperate and keep inventing more desperate theories and alternate facts to sustain their illusion. For many of these people, they have nothing left; their families have shunned them, their friends have left, all they have is the Q community. They may not have a Jim Jones to organize the whole affair (nor the Red Militia to put guns to their heads and force them to it - yes, I know some history), but I anticipate a large number of those who subscribe to Qanon theory to have mental issues ranging up to suicide in the years to come.

also from todays electoral-vote.com

Amazon sent a message to Parler’s CEO John Matze listing nearly 100 violations of Amazon’s terms and conditions, largely focusing on how Parler spreads hate and allows “tweets” (parles? bon mots?) encouraging violence. For example, L. Lin Wood, a lawyer who sued to overturn Trump’s election loss, recently posted: “Get the firing squad ready. Pence goes FIRST.” Amazon is a private company and can pretty much decide on its own that it doesn’t want Parler as a customer. Getting a court to force Amazon to take a customer that Amazon says has repeatedly violated Amazon’s stated policies would be next to impossible, even if Amazon weren’t the second biggest company on the Fortune 500 list (Walmart is #1). It’s not going to happen.

Amazon isn’t the only company that rents servers, but it is the biggest. Parler is now frantically looking for new hosting capacity. If it can’t find it, the company is toast. Microsoft also runs huge server farms but there is no way that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (an immigrant from India) is going to help Parler spew its xenophobia, racism, and hate. The third big player in the hosting market is Google, but Google has already made it clear what it thinks of Parler by removing its app from the Android store. There are plenty of other hosting companies, but Parler will need a fairly large one and it could be tricky to find one that is willing to accept the blowback that it will get if it takes on Parler. Maybe Matze can ask Vladimir Putin if he knows of any Russian hosting companies he can recommend.

Trump himself has toyed with setting up his own microblogging service, to compete with Twitter and Parler. But to do so, he will also need to rent a lot of servers. In addition to the problem of most big companies not willing to touch him with a 10-foot pole, he has the extra problem of everyone’s knowing that he doesn’t pay his bills. Any company that is willing to do business with him is probably going to demand the first year’s rent for the servers paid in full in advance before turning them on. That would cost millions of dollars Trump doesn’t have. As far as we know, Parler pays its bills on time (with Rebekah Mercer’s money), and if it has trouble finding a hosting company, it will be that much harder for Trump given both the content issues and his reputation for stiffing his vendors. While it is unlikely Trump will be totally muzzled, getting the word out will be a lot more dificult going forward. Maybe the President should look into smoke signals or skywriting. Don’t need a server for those. (V)

Looking at those statements from the QAnon nuts, man all I can say is I hope someone’s there for them, that they haven’t totally alienated everyone around them….because I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some of those folks attempt suicide when the whole QAnon ARG comes crashing down.

It will happen now that they have been cancelled by Twitter, I guarantee. Some, I hope, will emerge they way one does from depression—struggling but slowly reforging connections until things like talking to loved ones about normal everyday things becomes a pleasure again.

Actually, earlier than that. I was born before ‘68 and I remember the anti-environmentalism and how animals were treated like cannon fodder before then. Also, Roosevelt only became pro-environment after however many zillion trophy hunts.

But democrats were no different then. The point being that Republicans have not held hardened idealogies “since forever.”

re: #227 Nojay UK

Back in 1987 I was helping tear down the Worldcon in Brighton, UK. The next event going in to the exhibition spaces of the Metropolitan Hotel after we got out was a Very Large Databases dog-and-pony show, software devs and hardware manufacturers and presentations. I remember looking at some of the flyers and posters for this event that informed me that “Very Large” apparently meant databases of 100 megabytes and more.

Times have changed.

Back in ‘87 or so we bought a new disk for our Harris 800 minicomputer. It was huge — 675 megabytes, the biggest one that CDC were selling at the time.

(Morons in CDC who built it managed to get some of the wiring wrong, it used to corrupt itself around once a week. One of my colleagues spent hours with the doc tracing the wiring and found the error).

T5? pretty sure 400Mbit isn’t going to cut it for a platform like that. Just had a 10Gb fiber installed for a school with about 1000 users.

The question is would the ISP that provides the internet line be within their rights to cancel services? They may be a little more constrained because they are regulated as utilities, but didn’t stormfront’s ISP drop them?

220, 221, whatever it takes.

Bitsy is now on duty for scritching purposes.

when mine isn’t cuddling up top on the bed, she’ll wander down and find the absolutely least convenient place to park her ass. If there’s even the slightest crack of space between my knees, she’ll claw-biscuit her way down until she finds the mattress, and then I’m stuck in a position that I personally cannot sleep in because I wake myself snoring almost immediately. Or she will find a spot on the bottom of the bed and conspire to create a soft nest composed of every blanket, quilt, afghan, duvet, and sheet on the motherfrackin’ bed, leaving me to wake up an hour later wondering if at some point in the night I was rendered into a black ops site and left in a cold cell for the beginnings of the breaking of any resistance to more advanced torture, like being claw-biscuited by an otherwise super-loving cat. I had to give her flea drops between the shoulder blades yesterday, and had to read the fine print twice to assure myself it was not actually stating that I should refrain from sexual relations with the cat for 24 hours after application. Fortunately, I am not obliged to have sexual relations with the cat, either before or after the 24 hour period, but it was only the discovery of my spectacles on the bread cutting board (no idea) that confirmed this.
