“…Before the president’s remarks around noon, several of his family members addressed the crowd with speeches that all shared a central theme: Fight. Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons, told the crowd that lawmakers needed to “show some fight” and “stand up,” before urging the angry mass to “march on the Capitol today.” Donald Trump Jr., another of the president’s sons, exhorted all “red-blooded, patriotic Americans” to “fight for Trump.”

Backstage, as the president prepared to speak, Laura Branigan’s hit “Gloria” was blared to rev up the crowd, and Trump Jr., in a video he recorded for social media, called the rallygoers “awesome patriots that are sick of the bull——.” His girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, danced to the song and, clenching her right fist, urged people to “fight.”

re: #7 Rightwingconspirator

Reading the FBI has warned terrorist forces are planning an even larger assault on our democracy. really makes me want to let the police use the kinds of tactics Donald Trump called for when he figured it was cops vs “antifa” aka progressives.

That level of force, and greater, has been used many times. The permissibility of a particular level of force depends largely on what is at stake. To Republicans, who value income producing property above all else, saving a Walmart from looters and saving the republic from fascist savages are probably about equal in that respect. For the rest of us though, political freedom and the rule of law supercede any other consideration.
ANY necessary level of force would be justified in their defense.
Given what is at stake, our case for force against the insurrectionists is at least as strong as the Truman administration’s case for using nuclear weapons against the Japanese. I do not advocate nuking the Trump hyenas but only because I do not see how nukes could be usefully applied, and not because I think it would necessarily be wrong or immoral.

Well, she’s a black woman, in high office!!! Don’t you see?

Let’s see what all were social media 50-centers claiming about her:

1) She’s not eligible per office, like Chapman University “Professor” Eastman, who was one of those egging on the terrorists at the Capitol on January 6th.
2) She’s not black because she’s descended from evil white slave owners
3) She’s not black because she’s Indian.
4) She’s black but not an ADOS (American Descendent of Slaves) — an attempt at anti-black racism while claiming not to be anti-black. It’s something I’ve seen some far leftist trolls claim too.
5) She’s Barack Obama’s younger sister…. (Actually, I’ve not heard that one yet.)

That’s been the general theme from Repubs since Wedneday: They’re not angry at Trump for putting their lives in danger by using the base’s anger to whip up a lynch mob. They’re angry that he robbed them of what they saw as an awesome opportunity to tap that geyser of rage and use it to fuel the next 1-2 election cycles.

So now they’re stuck trying to sell some lame “healing and unity” BS and doing the very last thing they wanted to do this week: Defend his ass from one last effort to hold him accountable for his actions.

So apparently the World’s Dumbest Viking (h/t Hoarse) has his lawyer telling the judge that he needs organic food for his “shaman diet” and thus it’s a religious thing, but the article quotes his mom who reveals the real reason he “needs” organic food: Li’l Jakey gets a tummy ache if he’s fed anything but organic food.

That’s not a religious matter, that’s a dietary one. But I guess spinning himself as a “Viking shaman” who can only eat organic food sounds better than admitting he gets queasy if his meal doesn’t come from Whole Foods. Who knew that there was such a thing as a Viking snowflake?

And that’s a problem with the First Amendment. The government cannot define what a religion is. Whether he truly believes this, or it’s a cynical ploy to gain sympathy or privileges, if a judge starts defining what a religion is, no religion is safe (starting with non-religious people, atheists’ rights would be taken immediately).

The guy pictured (Mike Bledsoe) was only arrested by the Memphis Police for domestic assault on his wife back in October. He broke down the door of his house, grabbed his wife by the throat, then threw her to the ground (breaking a 75” television in the process). He also told his six year-old daughter to kill herself, as the daughter called the police regarding the assault.

He was released on his own recognizance. The children were unhurt.

Caution for overt descriptions of domestic violence. Includes police reporting of the incident and his mugshot.

She is a member of the Christian Democratic Union party; as such she is a conservative, and conservatives will defend each other. I have no idea why liberals keep calling her “the new leader of the free world” when she does the bare minimum to uphold democratic norms.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized President Donald Trump’s social media eviction, calling it ‘problematic.’

On Monday, a spokesperson for Merkel, Steffen Seibert, said that it wasn’t up to social media CEOs to regulate freedom of speech, but to lawmakers. “This fundamental right can be intervened in, but according to the law and within the framework defined by legislators — not according to a decision by the management of social media platforms,” Seibert told reporters in Berlin.

Eww.

In the “before times,” on our last trip to Saskatchewan, while Canada’s Border Services agents were hassling me over my epilepsy medications and the license plate on our car, my wife had declared she had packaged beef jerky from our local butcher (smh at the time). They said we couldn’t bring that into the country (duh), so while they held us a couple hours at the border, they allowed us to scarf down about a pound of beef jerky rather than throw it away.

Which is why article 10 of the Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen de 1789 makes more sense than the 1st:

The Nebraska State Patrol, which is responsible for managing security at the Capitol, said it is also aware of the calls spreading through social media posts, adding that it did not publicly discuss security procedures.

“The entire complex is closely monitored at all times, with on-site security,” State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas said in an email.

“NSP Capitol Security successfully and safely manages many large events each year, including events that occurred last summer,” he added, referring to the Black Lives Matter protests that took place near and at the Capitol.

Black Lives Matter protestors didn’t try to storm the Unicameral armed, threatening to kill senators.

On the other hand, armed yahoos already stormed our state capitol building when there was discussion about a red flag law.

I was being facetious, but it is good to see that they place an emphasis on being world citizens.

The troops from Rwanda and elsewhere also attempt to keep the peace generally, unlike US troops. The last time there was a major deployment of US troops on UN peacekeeping duties was the Somalia debacle in 1992-93, a parting gift from outgoing President GHW Bush to President-elect Clinton. Rather than “keep the peace” the US military unilaterally decided to go off and kidnap one of the local Somali warlords resulting in the Blackhawk Down incident where the survivors of the American snatch squad were rescued by Pakistani peacekeepers.

Someone I knew who was a UN Peacekeeper during the Bosnian crisis got rescued by Pakistani peacekeepers — he had been part of a team manning a road checkpoint in a valley when they came under sporadic fire one night. They hunkered down and called for assistance. Eventually mortar rounds started landing on both sides of the valley suppressing the rifle and MG fire and half an hour later Pakistani AFVs turned up to evacuate them.

“Thanks for the fire support.”

“What fire support?”

Post-action investigations found the incident was actually two of the many sides in the conflict exchanging rounds across the valley rather than targetting the check point which, it seemed, the combatants didn’t even know was there.

Confused users in search of Parler push the app ‘Parlor’ to top of app store charts (Mashable)

Parlor is a “social talking app” in which people can get on and talk with strangers about different topics. It’s been around for 10 years according to the app listing, and, Sensor Tower data indicates it had 40,000 downloads as of December 2020. Its reviews are not great to say the least, and it looks, well, pretty porn-y.

There’s no reason this app should be getting such a big bump right now, in the first week of January 2021. But of course, we likely have confused people downloading it because they think it’s Parler with an e. So, uh…. happy Parlor-ing!

I watched part of the Highwayman last night as my wife was viewing it. I enjoyed what I saw. Woody Harrelson was good, I seem to always enjoy watching him.
The movie also included the character of Texas Governor “Ma” Furguson. I had heard of her, but did some more reading. Bates is also someone I enjoy watching.

This review is pretty accurate:

If you enjoy dreary, depressing, and monotone films that completely lack creativity, or if you’re a fan of classic cars, you’ll love The Highwaymen. But seriously, it’s a competent film with a great lead cast and a different take on a familiar story. It just fails to do anything interesting with the genre. The filmmakers didn’t take any risks.

The Highwaymen was released on Netflix, so there are no box office returns, but it currently has a 53% positive critic rating and 78% audience rating on RottenTomatoes. Overall, I’d put my rating at somewhere between those two numbers.

Omaha’s city council (nominally non-partisan) is set to install the racist Covid-19 denialist antivaxxer later today previously nominated by a retiring board member.

As the Omaha City Council prepares to swear in a new member Tuesday, a community advocate is arguing that the council’s vote to appoint Colleen Brennan broke with precedent and may have ignored state law — accusations that the interim city attorney says are without merit.

Brennan is expected to be sworn in at the council’s 2 p.m. meeting to replace Rich Pahls, who resigned to join the Nebraska Legislature this month. Brennan, who will represent southwest Omaha’s District 5, has attracted both criticism and support for blog posts she wrote on race, the coronavirus and other issues.

Scott Blake, an Omaha artist who often discusses city politics on Twitter, has sent emails to council members and other city officials arguing that Pahls should not have been allowed to vote on his successor. Pahls joined four other council members on Dec. 22 in voting for Brennan.

Nebraska law dictates that “the remaining members” of the council shall vote to fill vacancies.

Let it not be said that Edelson didn’t do some good in his life. He donated many millions to educational and medical programs and helped advance initiatives in the US and around the world for decades. So he gets a minimal amount of credit from me for that.

But the bad that he helped to unleash through his political involvements, in the United States with the GOP and in Israel with his considerable and even game-changing support to Netanyahu, was so monumental that it will forever overshadow the good throughout time.

FOX is poison. Unfortunately, the only way to cut off their funding is going after the cable companies which pay them clearance fees (rather than the other way round), and the only way to do that is enough people demand their cable company cease or they will leave.

You will get the same arguments of “convenience” you get about any other problem where the only way to exercise your power in a rapacious economy exists.

Our cat Felix Randomkitty (PBUH) used to have orange balls to bat around when bored.

My wife and I grew orange habañeros one year, and left them in the kitchen window to dry.

About four o’clock one morning while we were sleeping, there was a loud “yowl,” crash of dishes on the floor, and other things rapidly moving through the house.

Felix had stuck one on a paw, then tried to bite it off his paw.

We found the chewed pepper in the living room, and the cat about a day and a half later. He would never play with the orange plastic balls again.

It’s clear that there is no appropriate process for review by many of these custom design companies, because you can’t tell me a review by an appropriately conscientious employee would allow a design like this to be approved and manufactured.

In case you needed an example of an idiotic Democrat:

Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader prompted a massive outcry—and may have opened himself up to a primary challenge—when he opposed impeaching Donald Trump and compared the idea to a “lynching” on a call with fellow House Democrats on Friday. Just hours after his remarks were first reported, Schrader issued an apology, and the following day he came out in favor of impeachment, but the damage may have already been done.

This. This doesn’t seem to be new thing: there have been a number of producers and vendors of offensive clothing (and other) items who have gotten called out for it, and their response has usually been the same: yank the offending items from the sites/stores, and issue public “apologies” for showing/selling them.
Of course, the main business principle in operation here seems to be that as long as the profits one gets from selling Nazi/whatever crap isn’t likely to get eaten up by legal costs or lost business, it’s OK.

Paying employees cuts into profits.

The same thing happened with Amazon and the wingnut antivaxxer from Australia’s book “Melanie’s Marvelous Measles.” It took people around the world repeatedly reporting that book as it kept reappearing on the site.

That according to antivaxxers, libertarians, and other lunatics makes liberals fascists for banning books (despite Amazon pulling it for a business decision, not a government ordering it, though you could make an argument for public safety).

Greets and saluts from the failed state of the United States. Trump’s still in the WH, GOP treasonweasels are still calling for unity after their failed insurrection and coup that killed a cop, while a majority of Americans are fed up and media outlets are even now still trying to magic balance the fuck out of things.

Did I mention failed state?

Yeah, if this went on in any other nation on the planet, the US State Department would be issuing travel warnings due to political instability, warn all sides to respect the political process and laws of the country, and hold the insurrectionists/coup leaders accountable and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

GOP treasonweasels don’t want Democrats holding votes to impeach and then hold a trial to remove Trump. They don’t want to go on the record, because too many of them will again side with the most corrupt and criminal admin in our history. Trump’s legacy will be one of chaos, cruelty, armed insurrection, a failed coup he led and incited, and 380,000+ dead Americans from his disastrous covid19 response.

This is who the GOP has tied their existence to.

Oh yeah, and who had been funding and backing Trumpworld and the GOP financially? Sheldon Adelson and other billionaires like him. Adelson is dead. That changes Trump’s calculus here in the final days of the Trumpreich? Maybe. Trump can’t count on money coming to bail out Trump’s businesses or campaign or legal expenses.

Adelson’s fundraising was all about support of Israel, and we know how Adelson’s money ended up corrupting two national leaders: Israel’s and the US. That deserves a reckoning.

I bought some ghost pepper salsa over the holidays. Since we now do the traditional tamales for Christmas Eve, my wife put out three bowls of salsa, one mild, one medium, and one ghost pepper. I get a tamale, and go to choose some salsa. One of the bowls has a spoon in it, and I choose it because I wasn’t looking for too hot, and since my wife will never eat the really hot stuff, I figured she put it in the stuff she used. Oh, no. My first bite, and my mouth was burning. She had, for some reason, chosen to to put the spoon in the ghost pepper salsa.

So the joke in our house now is that you can tell salsa is spicy if it has a spoon in it.

re: #342 thedopefishlives

There are a lot of crazy people who spent a lot of time trying to make things hot enough to melt a hole in your mouth.

Which, in my opinion, is a total waste of the value of the various hot peppers. While they vary in Scoville value (and hotness with a class also varies pepper to pepper) the different peppers also taste different as well. My preference for making spicy foods using hot peppers is to use a mix of them - get a flavor variety while keeping the hotness reasonable*. (Thus a pot of chili would potentially use only one Scotch Bonnet, while also using a few Serano or Anaheims as well.)

* - And don’t forget to use other “hot” spices than just the peppers. Garlic, white pepper, chili powder, cumin, etc. Vary where the heat hits your tongue, and when it hits as well.

The worst bowl of chili I ever had was simply spiced with chili powder, tons of chili powder.

The MAGA people who are especially upset are those who have been publicly identified at the rally and especially at the siege — they really resent being personally misidentified as Antifa when they were committing treason on behalf of Trump.

Counter-argument: Religious apologetics works precisely because their claims are not countered.

The same goes for propaganda, because they use the same tools.

A person who has not encountered the claim before, seeing no pushback against it, is more susceptible to accepting the claim.

The purpose is not to convince those who talked themselves into a position: It’s to prevent others from falling for the same trap.

I understand that it was accepted procedure to count the in-person votes first and then the write-in/absentee/early ballots because in all previous elections, these were small in number and generally did not alter the outcome.

But the stage was set to make it look like a late-night vote-stealing coup and enough people bought it to create one of the biggest clusterfucks of an election since 1876.

re: #469 Belafon

Or half a spoon since the salsa has been dissolving it.

There have been a couple of things the press has published about some of the Democrat’s strategies that I wish they wouldn’t have.

The problem often isn’t the press, it’s Democrats publicly proposing strategies that might best be kept quiet until AFTER they are elected. For example, “expanding the court” was probably not helpful in retaining those hard won seats from 2018.

The one I saw had Rodriguez, Mull, Billy Crystal, and Robin Williams.

Williams was his usual manic stand-up self and was pretty much the funniest one there. (And I also noticed that the insult tossers were avoiding throwing lines at him. Don’t poke the bear or it will eat you?)

Rodriguez, unfortunately, was pretty much doing nothing but tossing insult jokes. He aimed a bunch at Mull, and Mull struck back when it was his turn. Overall effect was that he came off (to the bunch of us watching the program as a group) was that he was the least talented one there.

Mull was his usual understated self. Took some shots back at Rodriguez. But compared to Williams’ zany energy he came across as sort of boring. I’d say Mull’s style was not served well by the format.

Crystal was somewhere in between and engaged on a more intellectual level. I think Rodriguez had tossed a few barbs at Crystal and Crystal’s response was pretty much to just ignore Rodriguez - perhaps deciding that the best course was to treat Rodriguez as unworthy of retaliation?

I’d say the “liberal” influence really is that the students are pretty much forced into a diverse community with varying points of view, mature behavior expected*, and being usually free from parental interference.

It often seems to trigger a lot of rebellious and contrarian behavior and the parents need someone to blame. Though I’ve seem a bunch of acquaintances be rebellious and radical political types in college turn into their parents within a decade once they need to work a job in order to feed and clothe themselves.
