Colbert: The Terrorists Who Attacked Congress at the President’s Direction Came Prepared to Kill

Stephen didn’t get a lot of sleep last weekend, as horrific scenes from last week’s violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol played over and again in his head. It now appears clear that the armed mob, who were organized and cheered on by the president and his GOP backers in the House and Senate, came to the nation’s capital prepared to commit acts of violence against members of Congress and Vice President Mike Pence.

So what is going to happen in TX when the shooting starts and the opposing sides cannot tell each other apart?

Jon Schaffer from Tampa metal band Iced Earth among those photographed storming U.S. Capitol

“Now he’s [Jon Schaffer…fucktard on the right] a wanted felon by the FBI with his picture plastered everywhere. In this kind of environment, after what happened yesterday, I can’t imagine anything more disgusting.”

I don’t care if it’s Parliament or whatever system you have — it’s a joke. They’re criminals, and they’re owned by criminal bankers, and that’s just the reality of it.”

The lying is fractal.

[Jim Jordan]’s just saying that people believe this, which they believe because of evidence that will be presented soon, with propaganda certainly not being involved in their delusions at all, because that would make it the lying party’s fault.

No sarc intended, because I really don’t know: Has Jordan (ever?) unequivocally stated that November’s election WAS honest/WASN’T “stolen”??

More than a few of those Texas DPS (and other law enforcement members) are fully in support of the far-right militia and are more than willing to turn a blind eye, if not making sure the “liberals and BLMs” don’t get too uppity.

In a scathing resignation letter, Jason Schmid, a longtime senior House Armed Services Committee staffer, slammed the GOP members of the panel who objected to President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College win, particularly after a mob incited by Trump stormed the Capitol last Wednesday and left five people dead, Politico reports.

Wrote Schmid: “Anyone who watched those horrible hours unfold should have been galvanized to rebuke these insurrectionists in the strongest terms. Instead, some members whom I believed to be leaders in the defense of the nation chose to put political theater ahead of the defense of the Constitution and the republic.”

Impeachment won’t keep Trump from running again. Here’s a better way. by Bruce Ackerman and Gerard Magliocca, WaPo.

It’s simple, they say. Use the same Section 3 of the 14th Amendment everyone is talking about for Hawley, Brooks, Cruz, etc. It would cover Trump, and requires only a majority of votes in the Congress, according to them.

I’m all for impeaching him again. Let the stain be seen. But if these men are right, this should be done, too, after the 20th, when Dems are in charge of the Senate.

Trump could overturn it, but would need 2/3 of each house to remove it.

Damn. A number of high school journalists have been producing quality investigative reports over the past year or two.

An Oregon Man’s Violent Road To DC (Goes to the South Salem High School [Ore.] Clipian):

Among the Oregonians who traveled to Washington DC for what would become a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 was Tim Davis, 59. Davis has been an identifiable presence at rallies that have turned violent across Oregon since July, including one in Springfield, another in Portland, and two in Salem.

In addition to being part of the group that stormed the Oregon State Capitol on December 21, this past week he was caught on video and in still photographs participating in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. It was his second trip to Washington DC in the past month attending events that turned violent.

The Bhutanese eat chilli pepper as a vegetable, and their national dish is Chilli mixed with (yak) Cheese (Ema Datshi). Given that it’s not unreasonable they have a higher spice tolerance than the rest of us.

India too. Chili peppers, Tomatoes, Eggplants and potatoes are all integral to Indian cuisine and all New World imports…

Eggplants are a solanum that’s native to East Africa and India, they weren’t part of the Columbian Exchange.

I have a small section of cookbooks that contain recipes from Europe prior to New World produce. You can definitely see why two of the trinity—chilis, tomatoes—caught on, as people were constantly trying to hit sweet/sour/savory with elaborate mixtures of fruit, nuts, dairy, etc.

I have a lot of Indian cookbooks, but none that really discuss what Indian looked like before those items, or highlighted how old recipes were. I’ve always been curious, because there’s some suggestive directions: many native piper species (and zanthoxylums) for piquancy, various local fruits and vegetables that break down to sauce, food that look more like the thin curries of South India or the sour-fruit propelled koresht in Iran and Afghanistan….

It is the tweets. When the page loads, I stop it before the tweets load. They will then give the tweet but without the images and the tags showing the share etc.

The page is great and loads evertime, but the tweets not completely loaded. If you really want the tweet just reload the person who put it up with the reload icon on the right. As soon as you get to the end of the page and more comments are ready to be loaded the page loads with the tweets!!

Dreher claims that he owes the Never Trumpers an apology. Umm… he owes Every Democrat an apology too. We warned everyone of exactly how bad this could be, and it was worse than that.

Dreher then goes on to wonder how Trump radicalized so many, all while ignoring the right wing ecosphere that manipulates and misinforms the GOP base. Fox isn’t mentioned a single time. Neither is Parler. Weird. How exactly did Trump convince his base that up is down, wrong is right, and that an armed insurrection and attempted coup were averted through sheer dumb luck.

The security situation included fuckups by the relevant agencies. They also were sabotaged by Trump and his coconspirators (again ignored by Dreher).

Mostly, he’s trying to have it both ways while somehow blaming others for his magical thinking and for the events that occurred last week.

Know who must be held accountable: Trump, his coconspirators and accessories. That’s from Trump on down.

See, this is what makes me nervous about the entire “conservative resistance” that tends to get a lot of column inches and air time: It’s implicitly built on (1) not acknowledging the cultural precursors to Trump in their full extent, (2) electing to ignore the leftists that have been saying this was going to happen for years and years. So…the people that have been right all along are still somehow cut out of the conversation and not credited as accurate analysts, but the people that have been wrong, over and over, are credited because they’re “discovering” existing criticisms.

We have an enormous class of political “experts” that are constantly wrong but continue to be compensated…enormously…while never acknowledging that they aren’t good at the thing that they do and have never been.

Unless…bear with me here…their actual job is to give a pseudointellectual gloss to arbitrary and stupid acts of people with lots of power, who will pay real money to have someone be their geopolitical nursemaid, petting their hair and telling them whatever thing they did wrong was normal and understandable…or simply didn’t matter in the long run because they’re special and loved.

This is why I can’t have these conversations with the “sane” conservatives/Republicans/”independents” I know. They cannot admit that the party is off the rails and has been, arguably all the way back to Nixon.

I keep having to remind people that if Nixon had Republican majorities, he’d have never resigned.

Sample size of one, but every time I have the “talk” with a supposed reality-based conservative, it enviably lurches into what about-isms; “What about BLM; what about her emails; what about Lewinsky; what about what about what about?”

Trump being an anomaly that came out of nowhere is the defense mechanism that keeps them both feeling safe and sabotaging any chance society can start accepting a shared reality.

Trump is in deep trouble both financially and legally. He has massive debts coming due, and absolutely no-one is willing to lend him money anymore. No-one is going to pay him for his memoirs, or pay him to give speeches, or stay at his hotels or pay dues at his golf clubs. Even if he isn’t indicted, his prospects are limited to grifting off of his low information base, and that won’t be enough to pay his bills. He has fucked himself, and I’m here for it.

As someone who survived a malignant narcissist…that’s sadly not how they work.

They externalize—shame become blame, blame becomes punitiveness and spite—and nothing is their fault. They try and cause lasting harm to both their “opponents” (people that didn’t comply) and their “supporters” (people that did comply) because resistance and inability-to-serve-perfectly are equally great failures.

And since they are confident that they are always the victim and always deserve more, they will also never stop attempting to configure some kind of transactional relationship in which they provide the minimum of affection in return for…as much as they can obtain, material or emotional, from anyone vulnerable enough to sign on.

Trump will not stop himself, nor break down so much that he won’t continue to be a parasite.

Not Bay of Pigs. It was the Cuban missile crisis that led to panic.

During the Cuban missile crises, I was at school right across the St John River from the naval air base, and the base literally vibrated 24/7 during the crises.

Classmates from Key West said their parents told them machine guns and barbed wire had been set up on the beaches to repel any invasion.

And all of the Democratic Congresscritters are going to back him up.

Merrick Garland should be on the Supreme Court, as he was nominated by a Democrat President and every Democrat in Congress backed him up. But he is not, and Democrats can be as angry as they like about that, yet America cannot and will not hold Republicans accountable for blatantly stealing power, because in American culture, conservative white people stealing power is good and right. If the coup had succeeded and Democrats had been murdered, America would right now be preparing to crown Donald Trump king while media pundits asked Republicans if this was really the right thing to do, and then cutting away to football after they said yes. Because in America, conservative white people are supposed to be in power, and suggesting that these Brahmins are subject to the same laws as the rest of us is heresy.

Democrats can be as angry as they like. But America will not allow its high caste to be punished.

I have a lot of Indian cookbooks, but none that really discuss what Indian looked like before those items, or highlighted how old recipes were.

A long time back British TV got into producing “ethnic” sitcoms. One such series was about a Indian family in Britain who ran a restaurant named “The Jewel In India’s Passage” which probably gives you an idea of the sort of humour and braindeadness of the writing.

Anyways, one episode had a visiting cousin from India wearing a loincloth and nothing else who introduced authentic regional cuisine to the resturant’s menu. The (white) foodie types went gaga over this “real” Indian food, big writeups in glossy magazines and the like. It turned out when the menu item names were translated they were dishes like “Potatoes in a Bucket”.
