Carrying from downstairs:

re: #217 NO SMOCKING GUN!

Trump is in deep trouble both financially and legally. He has massive debts coming due, and absolutely no-one is willing to lend him money anymore. No-one is going to pay him for his memoirs, or pay him to give speeches, or stay at his hotels or pay dues at his golf clubs. Even if he isn’t indicted, his prospects are limited to grifting off of his low information base, and that won’t be enough to pay his bills. He has fucked himself, and I’m here for it.

It’s sinking in for him just now, at the very end, which is why he freaked out so badly when the PGA pulled out. He thought everything would be OK, even if it all failed, he could just skate on by with plausible deniability and maybe leverage his way out of Letitia James’s onslaught, but now he’s well and truly boned and he is finally coming to terms with it.

I admire what Klepper is doing, but he might want to lay low for a little a bit. I think he’s at that point where Colbert was when the Colbert Report first started. No one really quite knows who Kleeper is, so they’re more likely to expose themselves for the pieces-of-shit they are.

Sooner or later, though, someone’s going to catch on. And given this crowd is somehow now rationalizing killing cops in the name of Blue Lives Matter, it might get a bit rough.

Here’s what I’m going to do to fix the crashing problem some people are having with iPads and iPhones.

There will be a checkbox at the top of each thread labeled “Show embedded tweets.” It will start out unchecked by default. If you’re having the crashing problem, you don’t have to do anything - and this should fix it.

If you want to see a single embedded tweet in a comment, use the “Refresh comment” button in its top line and it will appear.

It’s going to take a couple of days to code and test this.

Current mood: very tired of people who lecture me not to expose Nazis and white supremacists because it “amplifies” their message. It’s just fucking stupid to think this huge problem will go away if we ignore it. Probably going to start auto-blocking the lecturers.

This is similar to my siblings getting mad at for recognizing a bunch of our cousins for the racist nitwits they are. “Just ignore them, they’re not changing, it’s not worth it.”

I know it sounds self-serving, but then I’m the one who gets yelled at for challenging the racist comments because everyone just wants to have a good time at the Memorial Day get together, despite cousin Robert dropping n-bombs left and right.

re: #6 Interesting Times

He’s a treasonweasel enabler whose failure to attend shows just how serious the FBI is about investigating the crimes committed all the way to the top (the ringleaders and those who funded these crimes). There’s obvious people who should be prosecuted: Trump, Junior, Rudy, Brooks, but also those who funded the trips from all over to the Capitol, who managed the rat line communications, etc.

After all, if this was a foreign terror attack, every LEO org would be involved and have their top people at the presser talking about how they’re going to root out every last person involved and charge them to the fullest extent of the law. It’s clear that Trump corrupting the DOJ and DHS among others has made that task even more difficult because it was all about protecting Trump from consequences of his failed coup.

That means that Wray and Wolf should also be hauled in and investigated themselves for their roles.

No stone left unturned.

We’d do this for a foreign terror attack. We must do the same when “Americans” engage in armed insurrection with the violent overthrow of the government as an end goal - and a cop murdered for good measure.

Considering the people I worked with and the constant indoctrination of the military’s subservience to the Constitution and the duly elected civilian government, I always knew that was false.

Even as active duty or a veteran you can’t seem to convince them of this.

It’s astounding that twice now in a few weeks the military leaders have put out such letters of assurance to the populace. Moreover, this goes directly against the acting toady’s letter at DOD which tried to reframe this as a First Amendment Protest.

Senator Mitch McConnell is said to believe that the impeachment effort will make it easier to purge President Trump from the party.

Mr. McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, has indicated that he wants to see the specific article of impeachment that the House is set to approve on Wednesday, which is expected to draw support from as many as a dozen Republicans, potentially including Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the party’s No. 3 in the House. But he has made clear in private discussions that he believes now is the moment to move on the weakened lame duck, whom he blames for causing Republicans to lose the Senate.

NYTimes link

If he thinks that, why is he delaying it until the 19th?

Far from armed insurrection, we saw throngs seeking peaceful protest and action.

Probably because old McTurtle wants to have it both ways: make a big show of “concern” about what’s going on (maybe Susan Collins can give him pointers) - but put off actually having to DO anything til the last minute - when Trump will be out the door anyway.

Barr and Trump were hoping to use 18 USC 2384 against BLM and Antifa to disrupt their peaceful protests by calling it seditious conspiracy.

Guess what. Turns out we can use that very law to prosecute every last treasonweasel here who engaged in an actual armed insurrection and failed coup. Thing is, while Barr was indicating that you don’t need to have proof of a plot to overthrow the government, there’s increasing signs that there was indeed a plot carried out last week to do just that.

Trump shows why he needs to be removed from office today as he goes on a rant that includes the 25th Amendment being used on Joe Biden.

It’s possible that health issues could require that Kamala temporarily take over via the 25th amendment. As I noted before, it took less than 24 hours for the US to declare war after Pearl Harbor was attacked.

If such a thing happened today, the House and Senate would take weeks debating the calendar.

Today was the resolution asking Mike Pence to invoke the XXV Amendment. The article of impeachment is scheduled for a roll call vote tomorrow.

I suspect that this has already been pointed out in the many posts that I have not yet been able to catch up with. (Sorry, but I am simply just not capable of reading the daily thousand+ posts and still get other things in my life done.)

As I understand it McConnell is seeking to grab and hold as much power as possible. By holding off impeaching until after January 20th he is hoping to:

1. Cripple Trump by allowing sanctions that prevent him from seeking
further office and probably help render Trump politically and financially insolvent

2. Cripple the Trump wing of the GOP by making it leaderless

3. Foist blame for the impeachment on the Democrats

Not mentioned is that McConnell is demonstrating his complete indifference for and absolute lack of concern about, the United States and its citizens in general, and his constituents in Kentucky in particular.

And look how well Republicans learned the lesson of Nixon.

The Republicans learned the lesson of Nixon very well. In Watergate, there were enough GOP senators with principles to force Nixon to resign.

Therefore the solution was obvious — ensure there would be no future GOP senators with principles.

there are thousands of insurrectionist assholes having panic attacks and sleepless nights over this. think of them sitting in their basements around the country, panicking at the impending ass-whupping and dismayed that their privilege won’t protect them from this. For many of them, their lives as they’ve known them will soon come to an end.

because law enforcement isn’t fucking around. There is going to be a run of mini-Nuremberg’s the next two years.

maybe that’s why mcconnell is supporting impeachment. This will already be an albatross for the Rs. The attack won’t fade in memory if there are trials going on for the next 2-3 years at least. Especially if some are elected republicans……..

This new feature is now active! Note that showing embedded tweets is OFF by default. If you want it to be on, scroll up to the top of the comments and use the checkbox labeled “Show embedded tweets.”

You may need to reload the page to see it.

Wrong. She was invading the House of Representatives where the Speaker, the Senate Majority Leader, and the Vice-President were located. She faced off against people with guns. She was wearing a backpack with unknown objects in it whilst the police were disarming bombs places in two locations, and a truck was searched for guns and Molotov cocktails. She was warned away. She was shot because she was a direct threat to the leaders of the government. That was not an unnecessary level of force, and she chose to be there.

I just looked in my settings and Javascript is on and no sites are blocked.

This is the new version of MS Edge (based on Chrome) and I run the dev version. I’ve just presumed as long as this has been going on, that it’s a bug in Edge messing with your Javascript. If I click through the tweet it pops up in full form on Twitter’s web page. I find that’s usually enough for me since I don’t Tweet myself.

Attempts to halt construction completely, as Biden promised, will prove difficult, particularly if contracts continue to be struck — a challenge Morgan acknowledged Tuesday. “They could terminate those contracts if they want to, but that’s going to be a very lengthy, messy process,” Morgan said.

Yeah, what we see with Trump is the long painful and at time dangerous death of fundamentalist Christianity in the US.

We are behind some other parts of the globe in this regard (yet other parts of the globe are still in an fundamentalist Christianity explosion.)

Fundamentalism in these theistic religions is the desperate attempt for escape from our existential dilemma. So the crisis is real for these people.

Violence happens because we are very violence-prone primates. Religion is used to justify or excuse our guilt (if we ever dare reflect on our own nature.)

Florida Panhandler  Jan 12, 2021 • 4:14:39pm

I notice Texas once again rumbling about Secession. It’s not going to happen. Way too many big corporations would pull out or pressure the leadership for fear of being HQ’d in what will be an international pariah white supremacist state. Picture a combination of Putin’s Russia with Aparthied South Africa.

Gone would be any semblance of the American Bill of Rights. No Freedom of Speech- Companies would be forced to carry the worst propaganda by the racist right wing assholes who run the state and speech counter to their narrative would be censored -just like in Russia. Texas would set up a virtual wall similar to China filtering out content not agreeable to the government’s current whims and all internal media controlled by draconian laws

Also gone would be Freedom of Religion- there would be a quasi-state religion comprised of the worst of the con man celebrity preachers imaginable in on the official take payed by the Nation of Texas- similar to the setup currently in Russia and the Orthodox Church. It would be a circle jerk of corruption and direct religious support of politicians and political decisions by Jesus hucksters. All other religions would be actively monitored and suppressed including Catholics and Jews.

Forget about demonstrations against the government or the police. They would be actively beat down and killed.

Unions (except for police unions loyal to the Governor/President) would be outlawed.

Racial injustice will skyrocket with most blacks ejected from the state or forced to leave or killed.

I grew up in Texas and know what really goes on behind closed doors and from the outwardly friendly faces. It is a fraud. The vast majority of people there are average normal people but are greatly overwhelmed by the sheer political power and wealth of the elite class and the sheer number of racist upper class whites who control all the shots.

Gerrymandering on steroids would be the new Apartheid and all power political and economic command authority would be centered on the Governor/President’s mansion and supported by the wealthy Texas similar to how the Oligarchs in Russia partner with Putin.

Again, it isn’t likely to happen but I think it is concerning that an internationally-reviled racist state could border what remains of the US.

“When all the facts come out about the treasonous attack on the U.S. Capitol inspired by President Trump, impeaching him three times won’t feel sufficient. Consider this Washington Post headline from Monday: ‘Video Shows Capitol Mob Dragging Police Officer Down Stairs. One Rioter Beat the Officer With a Pole Flying the U.S. Flag.’”

“That said, while I want Trump out — and I don’t mind him being silenced at such a tense time — I’m not sure I want him permanently off Twitter and Facebook. There’s important work that I need Trump to perform in his post-presidency, and I need him to have proper megaphones to do it. It’s to blow apart this Republican Party

Even a Squashed Coup can set the course for Authoritarianism. Just ask Russia.
Americans must demand—and Republicans must deliver—accountability if they want to avoid the fate of other failed coups. By Nina Khrushcheva

Of course, we’re in a different position than Russia was post fall of the Soviet Union. But her points still warrant caution moving forward, even if nothing awful happens over the next two weeks.

Trump forgot he was running a con on his marks and started believing his own bullshit that he could still somehow remain President. He could’ve walked away as the frontrunner for the GOP 2024 nomination, and grifted off of that the next 4 years. Instead he is utterly ruined and facing the possibility of life in prison. Trump is, I believe, finally going to face consequences.

I dunno. The attack on the Capitol was a pretty low moment, but aside from that this year’s been off to a pretty damn good start. Some of that, granted, has been consequences of said low point.

In 20 years the attack on the Capitol, despite one or two innocent deaths, might be seen as a critical moment in the preservation of democracy. Depends on what we do in the next 2 years.
