Considering that the man he’s protecting almost ensured that Pence didn’t continue to live at all, that’s pretty remarkable.

That suggests that the only reason that Pence didn’t buy into ‘playing the Pence card’ is that trying to install Trump as dictator would harm Pence’s own political career (especially if successful).

Even when a Republican does the right thing, there’s usually at least a rotten motive.

The GOP is one of the most racist, authoritarian parties in the Western world. That is why we must root for the corrupt establishment Republicans to exise Trump from the GOP.

Of course. The GOP has been working diligently to make itself more perfectly corrupt and fascist for well over 50 years. Even this gang of clowns will have made significant ‘progress’ given so much time.

The Georgia elections have to be certified first; I don’t know the deadline for this. McConnell has said that the Senate will not reconvene until a week from today, so that a minimum is a blocker.

2) Have a group of intelligent and dirty minded liberal teenagers spice up the language.

Schumer won’t be majority leader until January 20, when VP Harris can cast the tiebreaking vote.

I don’t think that’s a thing he can do. Once the election is certified, he’s no longer Majority Leader, regardless of if the Senate is in session.

I also have an answer to my original statement. The votes must be tallied by January 22 in order for certification to proceed.

Charlie Pierce, on Republican calls for unity and calling Democrats intemperate and inflammatory:

The gall. The sheer, unmitigated, steel-belted, gold-plated gall it takes for these people to make this argument, not a week after five people died in the worst battle in the U.S. Capitol since the Royal Marines blew town, can only be attributed to politicians who are confident that the forces of unreason and violence have their backs. And Republican conservatives have been playing footsie with those forces for decades.

“…House Democrats were briefed by the new Capitol Police leadership Monday night about threats to the inauguration from groups supporting President Trump, and the new security measures they are putting in place to avoid a repeat of last Wednesday’s riot.

According to members who were on the briefing call, the threats included promises to execute members of Congress, with the most dangerous coming from a handful of extremist groups. They are surfacing amid calls for a million “MAGA” devotees to flood Washington, D.C.

On Tuesday, police in the Chicago suburbs arrested 45-year-old Louis Capriotti, charging him with making threats to lawmakers last year in which authorities say he promised to kill any Democrat who attempted to enter the White House on Inauguration Day.”

And now Republicans are performatively violating metal detectors, to show how it’s done.

More Charlie Pierce:

There Will Be No ‘Unity’ Until Republicans Give Up Voter-Suppression as a National Policy
Brad Raffensperger doesn’t believe all the wicked fairy tales that inspired last week’s insurrection, but he will support legislative efforts to “correct” these non-existent problems—and disenfranchise people in the process.

There can be no talk of “unity” or bipartisan anything until the Republican Party makes one basic conciliatory move: it must give up on voter-suppression as a national policy. The party must give up on it in national elections, and it must give up on it in state elections, and it must give up on it in local elections. It must stop huffing its own product about phantom “voter fraud.” It must embrace the philosophy that the more people who vote, the healthier our republic is. Republican members of Congress could demonstrate their good faith in this regard by voting for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which is sitting in the Senate Judiciary Committee at the moment. Until the Republican Party does all this, there is no unity to be had that’s worthy of the name.

GOP treasonweasels suddenly find that metal detectors installed because of a clear and present danger to members of Congress is unconstitutional as applied to them.

On what fucking grounds? Is this limiting speech and debate? Are they not able to get to their jobs? Are they suddenly worried about the 4A? Seriously, be fucking specific and show your fucking work.

The GOP caterwauls a lot about the Constitution but it’s clear that not a one of them has actually read the Constitution, let alone understanding it.

Hold these treasonweasels accountable. If the GOP wont comply with the security requirements, eject them from the Chamber and hold them in contempt. In fact, move directly to expulsion in the case of Gohmert and his buddies.

This is an actual thing from 1984: deliberate poverty of language means it’s hard to have complicated thoughts, therefore it becomes harder to think in critical terms. “Communism” is just another gestural word where it doesn’t describe anything precise, just that it’s bad and contemptible and not-American.

Watching the second impeachment of Trump is like binge-watching Game of Thrones. Republican leaders are falling right and left.

Ivanka Trump apparently thinks she’s going to ride this insurrection out and be president one day. Bess Levin, Vanity Fair

When Donald Trump was improbably elected president in 2016, his eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were among the last people on earth one would consider qualified to work in the White House advising the leader of the free world. But being Trumps and Trumps by marriage, the duo obviously saw themselves as eminently equipped for the jobs, thanks to inflated professional titles given to them by their fathers over the years and chart-topping delusions of grandeur. As Michael Wolff reported in Fire and Fury, though friends warned Javanka of the risks of getting into politics, “balancing risk against reward,” they “decided to accept roles in the West Wing over the advice of almost everyone they knew. It was a joint decision by the couple, and, in some sense, a joint job. Between themselves, the two had made an earnest deal: If sometime in the future the opportunity arose, she’d be the one to run for president. The first woman president, Ivanka entertained, would not be Hillary Clinton; it would be Ivanka Trump.” (Oh, to have been a fly on the wall when the couple had a serious conversation deciding—as though it was actually a possibility—that she would be the one to ascend to the Oval Office. “It’ll be me. I’ll be the president,” we assume the first daughter said in her whisper voice, touching Jared’s face in a gentle way so as to not break it.)

She’s the best-looking. But she is dumber than a bag of hair.

Five. Trump has five spawn.

Who knows how Barron will turn out, but with the family into which he was born is as deplorable as they are, I wouldn’t bet on his chances to turn out to be a shining light.

This is an actual thing from 1984: deliberate poverty of language means it’s hard to have complicated thoughts, therefore it becomes harder to think in critical terms. “Communism” is just another gestural word where it doesn’t describe anything precise, just that it’s bad and contemptible and not-American.

What haunts me is that one definition of fascism is the application of colonialist control techniques on one’s own nation.

Well, by that definition America has always been fascist.

re: #110 The Ghost of a Flea

deliberate poverty of language means it’s hard to have complicated thoughts, therefore it becomes harder to think in critical terms.

Primo Levi has a chapter in his book, The Drowned and the Saved, talking about how the violence done to language itself in the camps was a deliberate strategy and a dehumanization technique, for the guards no less than the prisoners.

The impoverishment and violence done to language in the camps was intended to make it easier for violence done to people.
