Clear, Beautiful and Direct: Mxmtoon, Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 19,125

YouTube

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

January 15, 2021 | Bob Boilen
“Hi, I’m mxmtoon, and I’m doing my Tiny Desk at the world’s biggest desk!” And so it begins, from an eerily empty New York City office building, mxmtoon sings songs filled with dreams and anxieties. Much of the music comes from her recent 2020 EPs, Dawn and Dusk. Those EPs included collaborations with Carly Rae Jepsen and Tune-Yards’ Merrill Garbus. For this Tiny Desk (home) concert, her sweet voice and ukulele are accompanied by Nicole Wakabayashi on piano and Cale Hawkins on guitar.

It’s been almost two years now since we first played the Oakland-based mxmtoon on All Songs Considered. She was just 18 then, singing about crying in her “prom dress” (which I’m thrilled she is performing here). Her melodies are simple, with the words up front mighty and personal. One of the first songs she released is called “Feelings Are Fatal,” which she also performs. It’s a candid song about emotions and why we’re often afraid to share them. It’s a model for what mxmtoon does so well: humble, honest songs, sung here behind a massive desk.

SET LIST
“Fever Dream”
“Prom Dress”
“Feelings Are Fatal”
“Wallflower”
“Bon Iver”

So apparently we won’t be able to breathe again until trump actually leaves the White House and Biden is sworn in.

Why waste the last five days not creating complete chaos?

And I’m thinking “breathe”mode isn’t going to be really operable til Biden’s appointees can get settled at the various Departments (Justice and Defense being the most important ones IMO) -

NRA to move to Texas, fleeing litigation brought against it by New York state

Why am I not surprised?

The National Rifle Association announced Friday it plans to move to Texas, fleeing ongoing litigation brought against it by the New York State attorney general, who has sought to dissolve the organization for violating its nonprofit status.

So he basically just sold out the patriots who got rounded up for him,” one person wrote in a 15,000-member pro-Trump Telegram group. “Just wow.”

In online havens for MAGA extremists, including Gab, CloutHub, MeWe, Telegram and far-right message boards such as 8kun, the tone toward Trump is shifting. HuffPost reviewed thousands of messages across these platforms and found that a growing minority of the president’s once-devout backers are now denouncing him and rejecting his recent pleas for peace. Some have called for his arrest or execution, labeling him a “traitor” and a “coward.” Alarmingly, many of those who are irate about Biden’s supposed electoral theft are still plotting to forcibly prevent him from taking office — with or without Trump’s help.

We don’t follow you,” another Telegram user wrote, addressing Trump, after the president put out his video urging calm and order. “Be quiet and get out of our way.”

It has become apparent that now — after his mass radicalization campaign of voter-fraud disinformation and conspiracy-mongering — even Trump can’t stop the dangerous delusion he’s instilled across the country, or the next wave of violence it may soon bring

From dailykos

Sometimes a lack of response is telling. One would think that, had there been an innocent explanation for these tours[around the capitol], we would have heard it by now. A representative, or staff person, would have raised its hand and said something like:

Oh, that was us. This was a long planned tour with students from nearby universities to study the Capitol’s architecture, we got special dispensation to conduct the tour, and here’s a list of their names.

Instead, crickets.

From Lindell having a platform in any media to hype his allegations to his being invited into the inner sanctum of American power to apparently argue to the president or his team that there’s a path to rejecting the legitimate election of President-elect Joe Biden? Big money in tonight’s MegaMillions jackpot. Ticket sales are surging, first time in over a year (the lottery sales have been quite poor until the recent ballooning of the jackpots.)

While lottery sales are not the biggest source of revenue for states, still, the low lottery sales the past year has cut down on states’ revenues.

Before the attempted coup I had tried to give up cable news and it made a difference in my outlook. Consuming the political outrage industry is not healthy.

When Ted Turner started CNN people were screaming that there wasn’t enough news to fill a 24 hour news network and they were right. None of them are news channels anyways, they are all politics all of the time, we aren’t catching up on news by watching them.

Regarding the lotteries: the big jackpot numbers are of course for the annuitized value.

The cash value is less.

Now, interest rates have been very low, so the cash payouts had been, most of last year, a better fraction of the advertised annuitized value compared to prior years.

But the past couple of weeks the big jackpots advertised have been accompanied by increasing interest rates on the annuities. Now, part of me wants to believe this is just the lottery managers trying to eek out a few extra millions for the states instead of paying the gamblers.

But it also may indicate that interest rates are creeping up for big cash deposits. Which would indicate that the big-money market (annuities, institutions) is getting a bit higher return, which tells me the money-folk are expecting inflation or devaluing of the currency.

Massive media conglomerates will do anything for viewership, too.

It’s not just the person behind the interview desk—thought gods help us so many of them are self important twats— it’s the entire understanding of news as entertainment intermingled with the faux-intellectual idea of balanced rhetoric instead of factuality. There’s so many people doing ranty commentary as opposed to…doing research or pointing attention at journalism that does research.

Sticking with gambling: with the PowerBall jackpot just a little bit behind the MegaMillions jackpot, it seems likely that one of them will be won this weekend.

I always wonder about the winners… what if they Trumping religious nutjobs, who have habitually tithed at their local religious gimmick. Do they give 10% to their preacher?

Cash value tonight is a mere $550M. If a Joel Osteen adherent wins, do you think Osteen would turn down a $55M tithe?

I’m sure some of them do. I’m going to be honest with you: If I won a significant cash prize, I would donate a pretty sizable amount to my church. However, that’s because I know they’d put it to good use, not like Osteen’s grift, which only goes to serve himself.

Comedy comes, in large part, from the falling piano landing on someone else’s head. Think 3 Stooges. Or every slapstick gag in history.

Or from an out-of-left-field attack, like this one, from the most acid-tongued, classically profane, irreplaceable comic genius from Houston.

Deficit (Jesse Helms)

Why is it funny? Because everyone wanted to suspect (in their most evil self) that it just *might* be true. Also, it’s just hilarious.

re: #101 Semper Fi

If Trump does declare Marshal Law, would that in any way be to his advantage?

Yes and no. Declaration of martial law puts the military in charge; that would be him, as Commander in Chief. However, the military wants absolutely no part in his shenanigans, and would most likely be disinclined to acquiesce to his requests. With only five days remaining until his removal from Washington, it’s more likely that they would just refuse to listen to his orders and dare him to declare a court-martial for them, and the rest of the week would play out the same way as it likely will without martial law.

I understand the worry, I do. That’s why I answer in good faith. The fact of the matter is, on January 20th, Donald J. Trump WILL leave the White House as a private citizen (and shortly thereafter be arrested pending extradition to New York), and Joseph R. Biden, Jr., WILL be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. There is no maneuver, legal or illegal, that Trump can do to change that. The only thing that could change it is if someone wielding power over military or judicial matters was inclined to break the Constitution - but they have all said they won’t.

The Speaker is wielding her mace.

Pelosi says any lawmaker who helped insurrectionists could face criminal prosecution

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that lawmakers found to have aided any aspect of the mob violence and insurrection that overran Capitol Hill last week could face prosecution.

“If in fact it is found that members of Congress were accomplices to this insurrection, if they aided and abetted the crime, there may have to be actions taken beyond the Congress in terms of prosecutions,” Pelosi said at a press conference, choking up at times as she decried the racism and bigotry some of the rioters displayed openly on Capitol grounds.

Five days to go, and any order can be saluted and sent to the JAG for coordination. That’s a guaranteed couple weeks right there.

I like the odds of a poorly prepared Trump crime machine going up against warned and heavily armed law enforcement in any further nonsense.

The only way that works for the enemy is mass treason in the National Guard and relevant law enforcement, which seems unlikely on behalf of a mob and movement that has already killed a cop and is a clear threat to kill more.

Dodgy mathematical tables are how Charles Babbage got his start. His Difference Engine was meant to mechanically calculate math tables and even print them out directly, removing the step of manually setting galleys that could introduce error. He spent quite a lot of time correcting existing sets of tables, proved that a Chinese set of tables was copied from a previous historical Italian set of tables since they contained the same errors and even figured out a transposition error in one set of tables, deducing that a number 4 and number 2 type slug had fallen out of a typeset galley and had been replaced in the wrong locations before the printing was completed.

Now, of course, eventually their states would likely hold new elections and the new folks would be just as right-wing as the old while not being PROVEN insurrectionists—

The governors of their respective states would appoint a RW replacement almost immediately, so there would be little time that there would be 2 vacant seats.
