I heard a chattering head on one of the networks saying that Trump wants a red carpet and a 21-gun salute as he leaves the White House.

See, Don,the problem with that is that the US Army only uses a 5 man firing squad. Tell you what, we’ll skip the traditional one blank round just for you…

Trump blows up the Arizona GOP on his way out

“The craziness from the state Republican Party … it’s pretty embarrassing,” said a former top Republican official.

*snip*

The fallout has been swift. Several thousand Arizona Republicans have abandoned the party since the U.S. Capitol riot that Trump helped to incite, with the majority of the defectors re-registering without a designated party, according to state elections officials. Business leaders are publicly recoiling from the GOP after party officials thrust Arizona into the center of Trump’s failed effort to overturn the election results, further dividing an already fractured party.

“Let us be clear: we find the weeks of disinformation and outright lies to reverse a fair and free election from the head of the Arizona Republican Party and some elected officials to be reprehensible,” read a full-page ad in The Arizona Republic this week from Greater Phoenix Leadership, a group of CEOs. “The political party organization and these elected officials, which some of us have supported in the past, have again embarrassed Arizona on a national stage.”

re: #19 BigPapa

Anthime Joseph Gionet (born November 16, 1987), more commonly known as Baked Alaska, is an American neo-Nazi,[1][2] anti-semitic conspiracy theorist, and social media personality who gained attention through his advocacy on behalf of alt-right and white supremacist ideology, and through his promotion of anti-Jewish conspiracy theories such as white genocide and Jewish control of the media.[3][4][5][6][7][8] Prior to his 2016 transformation into an alt-right activist, Gionet was a commentator for BuzzFeed, where he supported libertarian and progressive political positions and marched in support of Black Lives Matter.[8]

-

On social media, Gionet has frequently promoted the Fourteen Words, a white supremacist slogan for preserving the white race.[35][36][37] He was permanently banned from Twitter after posting a photoshopped image of Laura Loomer, a Jewish far-right political commentator, inside a gas chamber.[8]

Mike Pompeo’s reign of error comes to an end with an ‘assault on the First Amendment’ (Kansas City Star Editorial Board)

(with audio, 3:18)

In about a week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s service will mercifully come to an end.

America will be better when he leaves office. Kansas will be much better if he decides to stay away from his adopted home state forever.

The latest episode in Pompeo’s reign of error came this week. The secretary gave a speech at the headquarters of Voice of America, the international news network supported by the federal government.

Pompeo called for VOA to abandon its role as a provider of fact-based journalism to become America’s cheerleader instead. He made no mention of the riot at the U.S. Capitol, an omission that drew the attention of a VOA journalist.

I was listening to local news radio while I was out running some errands. I’m happy to hear that they are unambiguously stating that there is concern about potential violence by supporters of Trump.

No both-siding, no equivocating. Not that there would be any way to spin it, but I was expecting them to at least try.

And the ‘insurrectionist tours’ story has got legs, too, with Pelosi threatening prosecution for any House member or staffer who took part.

It may take until the very last day, but Trumpism is looking like it’s headed for ‘smoking wreckage’ status if media coverage is any indication.

And as if we (well, actually Joe Biden) didn’t have enough shit to have to deal with cleaning up in the new Administration …

Found this piece (TPM, via dKos) about how our supposed national intelligence/counter-terrorism agency (DHS) dropped the ball on the Jan. 6 riots. Well, not so much “dropped” the ball, but studiously ignored a long, lofting “routine” fly to the infield. Nut graf(s):

Across conversations with multiple former DHS officials and analysts, TPM found that a top-down aversion from the Trump administration towards addressing the threat of far-right extremism, inept management, and the dismantling of DHS bureaucracies aimed at coordinating, analyzing, and disseminating information about extremist groups contributed to the lack of warning.

“Nobody wanted to write a formal intelligence report about this, in part out of fear that such a report would be very poorly received by the MAGA folks within DHS,” one former DHS official who served in the Trump administration told TPM, on condition of anonymity to speak freely.

Jeeze, yet another poorly-plumbed cesspool to have to clean out: I hope Secy-designate Mayorkas can figure out how to de-MAGAt-ize DHS without impairing it even further….

re: #96 Eclectic Cyborg

Biden also needs to cancel all those fucking Tariffs.

Maybe: but that’s truly an “easier said than done” task. The Trump Admin has fucked up our international trade position significantly (the effects have been somewhat masked by the COVID-19 pandemic, but will still be there in the near future) - and outside of knee-jerk China-bashing, done little to substantively improve it.

The main problem, as I see it, is that an enormous percentage of the American population doesn’t really have any more of a sophisticated notion of international economics than Donald Trump: “We” are still, IMO, fixated on the economic model prevalent in the post-WWII “Baby Boom” era, a mental model passed down to (now) at least generation: the expectation of limitless prosperity and growth as the natural order of things. And the failure of said Utopia to materialize always being Somebody Else’s Fault.

Trump has put Biden in the position to have to overturn tons of things, all of which will be held up as proof of him “wrecking America”.

And at some point, the stock market will start to sputter and Biden will have to choose between another massive cash influx or letting it crash and recover on its own. It will be a lose-lose situation for him, however he approaches it.

For most of the week, every appointment listing has been filled by the time I got there, but I kept trying. Earlier today one of the listings came up with the active ‘Set Appointment Time’ button lit up. Ha!, I thought. Success at last! I clicked through to find this.

He also once wrote in a blog post, “although I am not a white nationalist, I am not exactly allergic to the stuff.” Yarvin was listed to speak on the panel about “the new slave power,” along with Michael Anton, former deputy national security adviser under President Trump, who recently wrote an essay in Claremont’s The American Mind publication suggesting that Democrats were “openly talking about staging a coup.”

Something I learned touring a plantation in South Carolina’s gold coast is that a major reason why they enslaved west Africans is because they knew how to cultivate rice. The slavers didn’t just steal their physical labor, they stole their know-how as well.

That’s the problem with anti-terrorism actions.

Law enforcement or intelligence agencies can shut down any number of terrorist actions before they occur, and life goes on as normal. If one gets through, all of a sudden everyone and their pet turtle are asking “how did this failure happen?”

I have no idea how many people want to cause harm, whether in DC or in state capitals. Could be a handful, could be dozens, could be tens of thousands, and every single one of them has to be stopped or people will blame the police for “failure.”

A former president Trump won’t ‘need to know.’ Cut off his intelligence. By Susan M. Gordon, who was the principal deputy director of national intelligence from 2017 to 2019.

My recommendation, as a 30-plus-year veteran of the intelligence community, is not to provide him any briefings after Jan. 20. With this simple act — which is solely the new president’s prerogative — Joe Biden can mitigate one aspect of the potential national security risk posed by Donald Trump, private citizen.

Fortunately, Trump is too incurious, stupid and lazy to absorb the information to transmit it back to Daddy Putin. If they do give him intelligence briefings, give him the real ones, without pictures and with dense jargon, and Trump’s eyes will glaze over within seconds.
