Seriously, while I have little sympathy for Qanon folks, I have enough to say that there needs to be hotlines with de-culting experts at the ready to help guide them past the stage of suicidal ideation and into a place where family and friends can step in to talk to them and guide them back to some normalcy.

So we talked to our RW brother today; little of the conversation involved politics. But the part that did: he claimed people had entered the Capitol while Trump was still speaking, thereby proving that some non-Trump organization was behind the invasion. It was so clearly not Trump supporters behind the attack. And he retains belief in all the lies about a stolen election, especially the dead people voting and people voting from empty lots. And, of course, on the coronavirus front, the early nursing home deaths in NY were all Cuomo’s fault, no blame due to the incompetent federal response at the beginning of the epidemic.

And then he rants about how 2022 the GOP will sweep in and get a huge majority. It’s possible he’s right on that one — there is a strong likelihood that we might be experiencing an economic meltdown due to the continuing economic effects of the pandemic.

I’ve been doing chores most of the day, did I miss anything? Today was Cleo’s Bath Day. I hurt. And there’s a giant load of towels in the washer. Within one day of last week’s attack on the Capitol, at least three states introduced legislation to criminalize protest. The bills, advanced by Republican lawmakers in Florida, Mississippi, and Indiana, do not represent new strategies designed specifically to prevent future right-wing insurrections. Rather, they draw from a set of policies that numerous state legislators introduced this summer in order to appear tough on protests against police brutality.

Florida’s and Mississippi’s bills in particular represent a new brand of anti-protest laws on steroids, creating penalties for a wide array of activities, from damaging monuments to obstructing traffic. The bills include measures that could encourage harsh law enforcement responses to protests as well as provisions meant to prevent local governments from reducing police funding.

The narrower Indiana bill would broaden the definition of rioting — which the Florida bill did as well — and would criminalize camping at the Indiana state Capitol. The Mississippi bill would also allow the state to strip unemployment benefits from anyone who pleads guilty to participating in disruptive protests.

One possibility is to cover up the failed coup and armed insurrection and the failed response by the DOD to come to the Capitol in a timely manner. That delay lacks sufficient explanation and Occam’s Razor points to Trump interfering and delaying to give the insurrectionists time to succeed.

Since directors are normally political appointees, that means they can hire partisans rather than those actually qualified for the job.

However, since we were traveling as part of a Bible Quiz tournament, it was… amusing to hear my parents say, “Don’t look at the sidewalk!” as we were walking. I’d go so far as to say security guards always follow the law, because if they don’t, their employers will be liable for not advising their employees as to the law in the area where they are providing security, and I doubt that any security company worth its salt would allow that to happen.

That’s a solid strategy. I’m not a gambler, so walking through the casinos with the Mrs. was only to show her the sights on the Strip and downtown. If you’re going to spend money in Vegas, do it with the shows and food. They’ve got Broadway quality shows and acts, and there’s a seemingly endless supply of good restaurants.

We are partial to the Hugo’s Cellar at the Four Queens Casino on Freemont St. if you want a nice steakhouse experience that goes old school. There’s also the free stuff, like watching the fountains at the Bellagio like Danny Ocean or Treasure Island or the Mirage volcano or the lights on Freemont St.

Or drive out to Valley of Fire State Park or further out to Zion NP or Grand Canyon. :)

Doubt I’ll go to Las Vegas again for just Las Vegas. The last few times it’s just been a convenient place to get somewhere else like Death Valley or Zion. Actually, quite a bit of scenic stuff not too far from Vegas if that’s your thing. Besides Death Valley and Zion, there’s hiking at Red Rock Canyon, Mt Charleston, Valley of Fire SP, and Snow Canyon SP within two hours and kayaking Black Canyon below Hoover Dam is a way fun diversion from all the noise and neon. Road trip up US93 and catch Valley of Fire and Cathedral Gorge and other state parks up to Great Basin National Park with a side trip on the ET highway or along the NV part of the Loneliest Road in the US (US50).

The Grand Canyon I didn’t get to see, but we did drive out to the Hoover Dam, because my dad has been a civil engineer for decades and what engineering nerd could pass up an opportunity to see one of the greatest engineering wonders of the world? I admit it gave me vertigo to see the drop into the river bed on the far side of the dam, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience overall.

If you have the chance, try the North Rim. It’s less crowded, but that’s because it’s harder to get to and has fewer amenities than the South Rim.

As for gambling - this should be your entertainment/discretionary budget. I don’t go to movies (even when the theaters were open), I don’t go to fancy restaurants.

I think we’re going to split our “stimulus” money between a local food bank and World Central Kitchen since we are in the fortunate position of not needing the money.

We had a discussion with Mr. C.’s sister and brother-in-law this afternoon about whether the stimulus should have gone to people who don’t need it. We were on the side of it being easier and faster to send it to everyone and many of us who don’t need it will just send it on to food banks and the like.

Yeah, I’m not a Vegas fan, but there is lots of cool stuff in NV. Great Basin NP is amazing (IMHO) Spring can be gorgeous, but if you want to go all the way up Wheeler Peak and see the Bristlecone Pines, you need to wait for the snow to have melted. And therein lies the problem with the Intermountain West-massive elevation changes to see the cool stuff so it will be too hot or too cold (or both) for part of your trip.

I’ve lived in Vegas since ‘96 (with 5 yr break for job in San Diego). I’ve tried to figure out another place to live that has as much to offer as Vegas. World class dining, entertainment and access anywhere in the world from McCarran airport.

If you have the chance, try the North Rim. It’s less crowded, but that’s because it’s harder to get to and has fewer amenities than the South Rim.

If we go back, we’d look to hike down into the Canyon and maybe stay at the ranch.

My mother did a 3-4 day rafting tour down a section of the canyon. I think they might have stayed at the ranch one of the nights.

The Grand Canyon lived up to the hype for me. I thought it was glorious. Had to wait until I was almost 50 to see it, but it was worth the wait.

In the 1980’s, my husband and I took several trips out west to see various parks. We rented a car and usually spent a night in Las Vegas between visits to Death Valley, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Zion National Park. It was convenient place to stay but our interest was in nature and not gambling.

BTW, if you’re in the DFW area, these two dogs, as the nextdoor post put it, lost their owner. They are nine years old. They are good with people, just not cats. If you know someone who could take them both, I could notify the person who has them.
