Pat Metheny’s Abstract Version of “The Girl From Ipanema”

Pat Metheny: “What’s It All About” (available June 14th)

“People are often surprised to hear that this is one of the first songs I ever learned, but any beginning guitar student knows about the dreaded “F” chord; the first time you are asked to “barre” two strings together with one finger. For me, in that first week of playing the instrument, it was impossible to make my fingers do that. But by leaving the top string open and not doing the barre, you wind up with an F major seventh chord, which somehow I recognized as being the first chord of the tune I had just heard Astrud Gilberto sing with Stan Getz on TV around that time. I actually liked it better than the straight  “F” chord anyway!” - Pat Metheny

After nearly 40 recordings under his own name, this is the first Pat Metheny album where there is not a single Metheny composition represented. This is a personal view of ten classic songs, some very well known, some less so, filtered through the harmonic and melodic ideology of a modern master with a most individual approach.

They earned it with a well played game. The turnover was key in the end.

Looking forward to seeing if the Browns can pull off the upset tomorrow.

Modern forms of communication require almost no education to operate, and we’re rediscovering what has always been true, especially in religion-addled America: there are a lot of marginally literate magical thinkers out there who want to vent.

Memes aren’t necessarily any worse than political cartoons — and those have been around since our republic began. As to people not reading news articles — in many cases it’s because we have encountered a paywall. There are too many publications out there and most of us don’t have the resources to subscribe to every paper/magazine that interests us— especially when it’s only an occasional article that we would like to read.

That’s a good point to make about memes vis-a-vis political cartoons, didn’t think of it that way.

Violences à Washington : Avant son suicide, un Français aurait fait une donation en bitcoins de 500.000 dollars à l’ultradroite américaine

Some French reporting on the mystery blockcoin donation to far-right nuts. They’re saying that this was a French IT guy, conspiracy theory loon, who sent the blockcoin and then committed suicide in December. It doesn’t look like he was a cut-through, as he had had the blockcoin for years. 20 Minutes is one of those commuter papers they give out on the metro, but the story doesn’t look hyped and NBC linked to it.

That $250,000 means that he can pay for a good lawyer. Once he is convicted he can then use the money to pay the fines, pay the restitution for any damage and maybe even have a bit left for his prison commissary account. Gee, imagine the damage he could have done with that money if only he wasn’t facing charges for thinking he and his fellow travelers could overthrow the government.

What a genius.

So, reading an article from Der Spiegel (I had to maneuver around their paywall), and they noted that according to research done in the last 14 days by Palacký University in Olomouc, only about 30% of Czech are interested in being vaccinated against COVID-19.

That tracks with general public sentiment I’ve long noticed anecdotally. Czechs, as I’ve pointed out before, are big believers in woowoo like homeopathy and alternative medicine like “healing crystals” and other assorted nonsense.

TL;DR - we’re fucked.

Yep, and throw in the general incompetence of the current Czech government and the micromanaging megalomaniac sitting in the Prime Minister’s chair, and it’s a recipe for national disaster. Outright civil disobedience to the government’s pandemic restrictions is growing pretty rapidly too and the Interior Minister noted that it could all too easily turn into outright civil unrest in the not-too-distant-future.

The government’s utter crisis management failure is almost complete.

49
John Vreeland  Jan 17, 2021 • 3:56:45am

If the president had shown the slightest degree of leadership with regard to the pandemic, he could have saved 300,000 lives and been re-elected in a landslide. But then he wouldn’t be Donald J. T___p.

The great irony of T____p’s Covid response is that he did it all to protect the stock market, which is so juiced now from the tax reduction that we are going through the deepest recession in almost 100 years and it is still setting new records almost every day.

Yeah, Sasse says all the right things here, but (even giving him the benefit of assuming that he may be serious - always chancy with Republicans) - when he says:

“When Trump leaves office, my party faces a choice: We can dedicate ourselves to defending the Constitution and perpetuating our best American institutions and traditions, or we can be a party of conspiracy theories, cable-news fantasies, and the ruin that comes with them,” he said.

“We can be the party of Eisenhower, or the party of the conspiracist Alex Jones,” Sasse continued, referring to Jones, who is a conspiracy theorist.

I have a sinking feeling as to exactly what choice about half of all GOPers will make, (and they won’t like Ike)…

Modern forms of communication require almost no education to operate, and we’re rediscovering what has always been true, especially in religion-addled America: there are a lot of marginally literate magical thinkers out there who want to vent.

I really don’t like the framing that Trump voters are somehow less literate and less educated; most of the ones I know are highly educated and not religious fanatics. Think of those in Trump’s orbit — Peter Navarro, Scot Atlas, etc. — who happily promoted lies that they really believe. Education offers skills in certain areas that allow people to be highly successful in business/science/technology — it doesn’t protect people from indoctrination or brainwashing or racism. Wisdom and decency are not a product of education.

If he had the opportunity, he did.

In fact, we know it happened early on in Trump’s presidency. Remember that time in May 2017 when he had hosted Russia’s foreign minister and ambassador Sergei Kislyak in the White House and gave away Israeli intelligence secrets?

The US President is said to have “spontaneously” told Sergey Lavrov and Sergei Kislyak top secret information about Isis at a meeting in the White House last week, according to The Washington Post.

It is thought the information came from Israel through a sensitive intelligence sharing arrangement and White House officials took steps to contain the damage after the meeting, placing calls to the CIA and National Security Agency.

Now an Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Buzzfeed News, has said the President’s leak confirmed his country’s “worst fears”.

“We have an arrangement with America which is unique to the world of intelligence sharing,” said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We do not have this relationship with any other country,”

“To know that this intelligence is shared with others, without our prior knowledge?” he added. “That is, for us, our worst fears confirmed.”

Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot reported in January that US intelligence agents had warned Israel’s officials against sharing sensitive information with Mr Trump’s administration.

Trump was barely even in the White House whilst US intelligence was briefing against him. They knew Trump was a security liability back then.

Back in the 1980’s the USSR had a con ops for defectors selling state secrets. Go to division x and they would process the agreement

When cryptography was involved, it was like a union organization at Walmart— they had a strike team special bureau at the KGB that would handle those cases immediately and offer special training and a lot more money than the usual defector would receive.
John Walker and Jerry Whitworth fell in to this category, and the damage they did to the US Cryptography infrastructure cost lives and big money and the whole scheme had to be rebuilt almost from scratch.

I fear a repeat of this has already happened and since that technology is a focus area for our adversaries it will take while to even figure out what has been compromised

POTUS pardon question:

If Cheetolini issues a last minute blanket pardon to everyone who stormed the Capitol on the 6th, can he blanket pardon them for any future crimes? Like, does that give them a golden ticket to go back and trespass there and shoot whoever they want, whenever they want?

I realize I’m going over the top here, but to be honest, this mothefurcker’s whole presidency has been based on “Let’s do the unthinkable and see if we can get away with it?”

Trump’s minions must have some really damning intel on Lindsey. Must suck to be an extortion target. No sympathy though. Spineless opportunists exist to be exploited.

True. And I know he supposedly was disappointed at how “low-class” it looked on TV; like he was expecting a bunch of uniformed, highly disciplined stormtroopers marching in unison and attacking.

That doesn’t answer the question, though: if he blanket pardons Y’all Queda for any charges, current or future, for the 6th, does that mean Y’all Queda gets a pass only for the 6th? Or can they go trick-or-treasoning at the Capitol any time they want, like a twisted form of diplomatic immunity?

Joe Biden is a Roman Catholic and they are saying this. I can see they are going to have some problems with Doug Emhoff.

IANAL, but it’s been said here multiple times that a pardon applies only to past actions.

Lindsey Graham blames Nancy Pelosi for the security failure at the Capitol

A guy I know from Louisiana blames the mayor of New Orleans for the spread of Covid at Mardi Gras last year.

The reasoning is that despite all of the Trump-run federal agencies telling her and the city it was fine to go ahead, the mayor should have somehow known that they were wrong and canceled Mardi Gras.

Which, of course, had the mayor done that, she would have been ignored and possibly murdered.

Of course, when St. Patty’s Day rolled around, the pandemic was in full swing and the mayor cancelled that. The city residents, having learned their lesson, understood and respected the mayor’s wishes.

HA! Just kidding. St. Patty’s Day was cancelled, but a bunch of mouth breathers went and had the parades anyway.

Again amazing that Presidents who regularly go to church are branded as God Killers while a whoremonger and child rapist who doesn’t know the difference between Two Corinthians and the four Evangelists is held up as God’s Chosen One.

re: #153 Hecuba’s daughter

I really don’t like the framing that Trump voters are somehow less literate and less educated; most of the ones I know are highly educated and not religious fanatics. Think of those in Trump’s orbit — Peter Navarro, Scot Atlas, etc. — who happily promoted lies that they really believe. Education offers skills in certain areas that allow people to be highly successful in business/science/technology — it doesn’t protect people from indoctrination or brainwashing or racism. Wisdom and decency are not a product of education.

Same with me. That’s just a reframing of the “economically anxious” argument.

The number of people in my town with only a high school education or lower is three. The same three who did not vote for Donald Trump. (Five of the university-educated also voted for Joe Biden, and three others for Jill Stein and two for Gary Johnson.)

It would take no effort for conservative propagandists to turn that right around and say “See, it’s the Democratic voters who are uneducated: They don’t know any better.”

The correct answer is not education, or age, or other determinants. It is “fascists,” “racists,” &c.
