And Now, the Amazing Jazmine Sullivan: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 22,201

YouTube

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Bobby Carter | January 8, 2021
I don’t recall any other artist at the Tiny Desk harmonizing their own introduction, but Philadelphia’s own Jazmine Sullivan didn’t waste a second, greeting us all by flexing those once-in-a-generation chops from the jump. The singer-songwriter, draped in a trench coat while her band sports all black, are nestled in the corner of a dimly lit space resembling a cabaret.

We don’t see or hear much from Jazmine Sullivan until she has something to get off her chest. She drops a body of work every five years or so, shakes up the world of R&B with each offering, then quietly goes back to minding her own business. Her latest project, Heaux Tales, is a bold and timely conversation piece addressing truths regarding relationships, sex, social norms, self-worth and a myriad of other topics that women graple with. Each song is masterfully connected to another through unique yet familiar testimonies by women from all walks of life.

She starts her Tiny Desk (home) concert with three extended and reworked selections from Heaux Tales, squeezes in thee fan favorite from 2015’s Reality Show, then invites Tiny Desk alum H.E.R. to the stage to close with “Girl Like Me.” Ms. Sullivan, her background vocalists and H.E.R. ate this performance up and left not a crumb on the floor.

Just read an article in the Kentucky Kernel that a University of Kentucky student posted about being at the attack on Instagram and is facing charges. She is a senior economics major, and IMHO, she should be expelled without a degree, regardless of what sentence she receives.

I am fairly sure rich folks try to grease the skids for presidential pardons every time a president is on the way out the door. The focus on it may rightly be a little more acute this year but let’s face it, Bill Clinton didn’t pardon Mark Rich out of the goodness of his heart. I’ve always thought the spike in pardons on the way out was unseemly at best, but presidents all seem to do it.

And while the military routinely reviews service members for extremist connections, the FBI screening is in addition to any previous monitoring.

DiCorrado, once wearing a “Trump Girl” t-shirt, has twice testified against mask mandates at public hearings held by Palm Beach’s Board of County Commissioners. DiCorrado—who was identified as “Cindy Garcia” at one meeting—referred to the COVID-19 crisis as a “Plandemic” and claimed that public officials were trying to scare “certain masses and ethnicities” like “our Latinos and our darker shades of brown skin.” DiCorrado described herself as a “minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told The Associated Press on Sunday that officials are conscious of the potential threat, and he warned commanders to be on the lookout for any problems within their ranks as the inauguration approaches. So far, however, he and other leaders say they have seen no evidence of any threats, and officials said the vetting hadn’t flagged any issues that they were aware of.

“We’re continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” McCarthy said in an interview after he and other military leaders went through an exhaustive, three-hour security drill in preparation for Wednesday’s inauguration. He said Guard members are also getting training on how to identify potential insider threats.

About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals. And while the military routinely reviews service members for extremist connections, the FBI screening is in addition to any previous monitoring.

Multiple officials said the process began as the first Guard troops began deploying to D.C. more than a week ago. And they said it is slated to be complete by Wednesday. Several officials discussed military planning on condition of anonymity.

I don’t know why I still watch Chuck Todd on Sunday mornings - bad force of habit, I guess. But I was in the shower during Press the Meat and listening to him earnestly asking his panel “if” they thought T***p would start flooding the zone with pardons this week before he leaves, and I was screaming at him, OF COURSE HE WILL BECAUSE HE ALWAYS DOES THE SHITTIEST THING YOU CAN IMAGINE HIM DOING AND THEN TURNS AROUND AND DOES SOMETHING EVEN SHITTIER ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS.

So, yes, he will issue pardons, lots and lots of them, to all the worst people, right up until the last possible moment. He will try to pardon himself. And we will find out, soon enough, that he and his shitty hangers-on were taking money and other bribes to do so. Why do we even have any doubt about that? Why does anyone act even slightly surprised anymore when these things happen?

Todd and the other Sunday shows do get guests who won’t always make themselves available for the daily cable hosts on the news channels, and sometimes news actually gets made as a result. It’s worthwhile - sometimes - when the hosts get it in them to press the questions. Doesn’t always happen, and Todd is way too guilty too often of “we’ll have to leave it there”-ism after being stonewalled for seven minutes. Lately he’s had a spine sometimes, though. And Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation is usually a little better.

Plus they’ve had Fauci on fairly often. He made some decent news on MTP today by disclosing that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine could be only a few weeks from FDA emergency use authorization. That was worth the hour by itself.

I said this last week. Biden, Harris, and Pelosi should be in three separate locations. There’s no reason they have to be next to another to be sworn in.

I’m genuinely worried that Biden is pulling a JFK by insisting that this be carried out as “normal” as possible. The reports that the military and police are rampant with Nazis have been out there for years. This seems nuts to not separate them.

Wyoming is considering a bill to change its seat belt law from “secondary” to “primary.”

A secondary seat belt law means a driver cannot be pulled over solely for a seat belt violation. AAA estimates such a change would reduce traffic deaths in Wyoming by about fifty people. The Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police also support a primary seat belt law.

Republican lawmakers in the state have opposed this change in the past. Wyoming has the lowest compliance rate in the nation.

One purpose of the public announcement that troops will be vetted would be to alert the troops themselves to the possibility and make sure they know to be extra vigilant. Any potential traitor will be surrounded by loyal soldiers. In fact, the wobbly ones are probably already under suspicion from their immediate comrades.

Sasse also pre-screens his telephonic town halls (which haven’t happened in several months now), to ensure no hard questions from Democrats get through.

Like my representative, Sasse only represents Republicans (he just didn’t say it out loud).

You should have. I post such things not because I’ll change the mind of the person I’m responding to, but to reach lurkers/low-info types. Come to think of it, I did in fact post this article in response to someone on a friend’s page who was falling for the “it wuz antifa!!1!!” gaslighting only to have him respond and literally thank me for letting him know!

So debunking is *always* a worthwhile act. You never know who you might reach/help.

Ehh I’m going to do an actual facebook post myself on my own page about the quote in question tomorrow so I can talk about it in full and not use is as a thread hijack on someone else’s page.

Part of the idea of terrorism is to, well, terrorise the populace.

Biden and Harris are in an unenviable position: If they do the inauguration in some other place in a non-traditional manner, “the terrorists win” is the result

I’d rather have that then having the terrorists win because they shot Biden. I hope he decides to do the inauguration in a secret location.

South Dakota voters passed a recreational marijuana initiative in the last election.

Conservatives of course never cared for democracy and will abuse the power of the state if necessary.

Gov. Noem says she ordered marijuana lawsuit in executive order (Rapid City Journal)

Gov. Kristi Noem said in an executive order Friday that she directed the Highway Patrol superintendent to bring a lawsuit against the voter-approved amendment legalizing marijuana after her spokesman previously told the Journal she hadn’t.

“On Nov. 20, 2020, I directed Colonel Rick Miller to commence the Amendment A litigation on my behalf in his official capacity,” Noem wrote in the order. “At all times thereafter, Colonel Rick Miller has acted as petitioner and plaintiff in the Amendment A litigation under my direction.”

All conservatives lie. It is axiomatic. The burden of proof lies on them to show they didn’t.

They’re using the same claim that shot down Nebraska’s medical marijuana referendum: It violates the “one subject rule” (possession, growing for your own use, transporting for your own use, &c are separate subjects, and yet it should be addressed with a constitutional amendment, which the referendum was).

Kids, don’t elect conservatives.

So I’m listening to a little Allman Brothers instead of watching TV (as one does) and after In Memory of Elizabeth Reed I called for Mountain Jam (as they were played back to back live in 1971)…about three bars into it my wife says, “Holy crap…I never realized this was a Donovan cover.” Mind. Fucking. Blown. I hadn’t realized it either.

First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain then there is.
Sing along, it’s fuckin’ awesome.

The Allman Brothers Band - Mountain Jam ( At Fillmore East, 1971 )

Donovan’s original - remastered of course.

He’ll happily let others do the deed while he’ll claim he doesn’t have anything to do with what will take place and still loves these people for supporting him…

My biggest fear is that some of these folks may have/could have weaponized some drones and will attempt to use them. No one seems to have mentioned this as a possibility and somehow I think it’s being overlooked, when it comes to these doomsday preppers and gear oriented cosplay warriors, to me it strikes me as a real possibility.

QAnon isn’t destroying the GOP from within. It is the new mutant strain of the Tea Party that will completely absorb the GOP.

Keep an eye on the 2021 New Jersey and Virgina Governors races where there is a good chance that both GOP nominees will be QAnon believers. And then the 2022 GOP primaries will be the tipping point where most of the GOP candidates will be QAnons.

I suspect, actually expect, that the entire Trump Org and the entire family wealth is hidden behind a labyrinth of legal gymnastics. Holding companies, etc.

Certainly Trump has maximized his ability to extract wealth not just from his gullible marks, but from his lenders and business partners.

Trump not only has been a horrible President, and a scorn-worthy person in his personal life, but he also represents some of the very worst aspects of capitalism.

I’m hoping that the GOP Coup plotters are running too low on sufficiently foolhardy operatives and dupes to stage any more Capitol-style ops. Only a tiny percentage of these nutters have the guts to act in the first place, and the swift response of the FBI combined with the worldwide tsunami of ridicule, curses, and exposure would certainly discourage those who remain. To make matters even worse, the Coup plotters have scored an own goal by immediately selling out the only people in their movement with the guts to act and smearing them as dastardly antifa super-soldier/actors.
