A reminder, and a warning, that Brexiteers are really Confederates:

One of the key architects of Brexit moves to deep south of US

One of the architects of Brexit has left the country to move stateside, even though his goal of achieving Brexit has been reached.

Douglas Carswell, whose defection from the Conservatives to become the first elected Ukip MP in 2014 helped pave the way for the referendum, has moved to the American Deep South. He has joined the Mississippi Center for Public Policy, a Conservative thinktank.

And do not forget that he got more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016. That still scares me…

Mr Carswell is obviously a huge fan of the US, he said: “I believe in American exceptionalism. Americans flourish when they are free.”

Which is why he relocated to a state which receives over 1/3 of its revenues from the Federal Government, the third-highest in the nation after NM and AK.

San Andreas fault is still quite noisy today, latest quake is in Los Altos Hills:

earthquake.usgs.gov

Very expensive neighborhood. The USGS coordinate puts the quake under the swimming pool of a $6.1M residence.

Some update on the insane shit in Moscow this morning. Navalny took a flight yesterday returning from Berlin to Moscow, after recuperating from the FSB trying to murder him. The airport he was supposed to land at (Vnukovo) was mysteriously closed for arrivals for some problem with snowplows that nobody could actually see, then landed at another airport (Shcheremyetevo). Also, the highway between the airports was also mysteriously closed. Navalny was then taken into custody before clearing immigration, and then taken to an unannounced location without informing his family or lawyer.

Turns out he was being held in a little cop shop in a suburb near the airport, which this morning was turned into a makeshift courtroom to charge him with violations of his parole from a previous bullshit charge: he didn’t report to his parole officer because he was recuperating in Germany from the Russian government trying to poison him. His lawyer was notified one (1) minute ahead of the scheduled hearing.

Putin is doing this either because he’s announcing a new era of lawless political repression, or the security services are completely out of control at this point, or maybe a bit from column A and a bit from column B.

Probably more European sanctions anyways, based on what’s been coming out of the EU and European national capitals this morning. This is a major escalation, and it shows how much of a threat they perceive him to be to get them pulling transparently ridiculous crap like this. Whether he actually is this level of threat, or the paranoid lunacy and lack of controls within the Kremlin have gotten bad enough to allow this, remains to be seen I guess.

I can’t see Navalny ever becoming president, because he just doesn’t have the power backing behind him to do so. It could, however, show Putin to be weak enough that another oligarch could attempt to bring Vladimir down.

well, the yamaha cp88 hasn’t shipped yet, which I guess is not unexpected. it was a Guitaaaaaargh!! Center purchase, which means god-only-knows. A little less than half new price for what they claim is “good, fully functional” condition. We’ll see. I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything from them before, mostly because their item descriptions typically consist of one picture taken from the other side of the store. I’d forgotten how much miscellaneous shit you have to buy when purchasing stuff like this (telescopes are the same way). Gotta buy a 70 dollar music desk, because of course that’s not included. Also a sustain pedal, ‘cause that ain’t there. A keyboard stand—there’s another 60. And of course when I sold my Kawai acoustic upright, my music books all went as well, which means I will slowly have to rebuy all the frikkin’ 29 buck a pop stuff that I effectively gave away because I wasn’t going to spend months on Ebay trying to unload it. However, watching people play this thing online, if everything works, this is gonna be hella good. Real wooden keys with ivory/ebony simulated keytops. Keys that are designed to mimic grand action. And some really hellaciously good sound emulation, which they keep updating with each new firmware release. This has the potential to be fun!

I’m not surprised; Polish epidemiologists have suggested a possible new variant that they believe might have originated here in Czech Republic. And at best guess from Czech Republic’s epidemiologists, probably 40% (or slightly higher) of the entire population of 10.5 million has already had COVID-19; a couple of them have suggested that by April or May, Czech Republic might well have achieved so-called herd immunity as a result of mass infection.

Someone remarked that this is like watching game animals who have never seen a hunter: they’re just wandering around in front of people with bows and rifles because they have no idea what the threat is. There’s a drawback to living your life in a bubble of privilege and permission, then vaguely perceiving that you may have overdone it and “sorry” might not cut it this time.

Granted, Twitter is a de facto monopoly and we need to address the overly influential position that these Internet monopoly players occupy in the national and political discourse.

But “nationalizing” them will not help.

I remember a similar discussion involving public protest at shopping malls.

Yeah as I see it there are two options, either break them up ma bell style, and honestly I am not even sure how you would go about that. You couldn’t do it geographically like they did with the phone companies. Or you treat them as utilities and regulate the fuck out of them.

This is the design, except the shirt was black and the design was printed on it in orange on the back of the shirt.

True. A little over a week ago I was on the back porch having a smoke and I heard all kinds of sirens blaring west of town. The next day I texted a friend of mine who lives on that side of town (we are a very small town) and he said a propane tank had exploded inside of a garage down the road from him. Pretty much destroyed the garage and the car that was in the garage. It was a detached garage about 40 feet from the house so the house didn’t have much damage from the resulting fire. Those things can be volatile if not stored correctly.

Yes, they can. A freshly filled tank can leak a little due to heat expansion if it over-pressurizes, and this is a common source of propane fires.

‘A place to fund hope’: How Proud Boys and other fringe groups found refuge on a Christian fundraising website

Postings on GiveSendGo show that at least $247,000 has been raised for 24 people — including at least eight members of the Proud Boys — who claimed online that the money was intended for travel, medical or legal expenses connected to “Stop the Steal” events, including the Jan. 6 rally.

One post asked donors to “sponsor a warrior” and help “buy body armor and other protection pieces for our patriots.” It has raised only $5. Another featured a screenshot of President Trump’s tweet promoting the Jan. 6 event above a man’s plea for help after he claimed that a different crowdfunding site, GoFundMe, had removed his page. “I plan to meet you all there and fight alongside you,” he wrote on GiveSendGo, raising $958

mmmirele  Jan 18, 2021 • 8:28:17am

And then we have this lovely woman, Nicole Garcia, who is running for Phoenix City Council.

‘The people will overthrow this type of government’: Phoenix council candidate posts about revolution before Capitol riot

At the beginning of December, as false claims of election fraud spread on social media, a candidate for Phoenix City Council warned of an impending revolution.

“Mess with my rights and my Republic and you get what you deserve. 1776,” Nicole Garcia wrote on Twitter on Dec. 5. “The people will overthrow this type of government and start new,” she added the next day.

A month later came the insurrection.

“We weren’t kidding when we said it’s 1776,” she posted Jan. 6 in a now-deleted tweet, as rioters broke through police barricades and into the U.S. Capitol, shattered windows and paraded through the historic halls. “Patriots don’t allow stolen elections.”

After it was over, as others attempted to distance themselves from the destruction and violence of the day, Garcia posted: “What happened today was probably the most American thing that’s happened in a long time.” She appears to have since deleted this tweet.

She’s a radical Republican. Rusty Bowers is no liberal, he’s my state rep and annoying.

At the same time, Garcia has established herself on social media as one of the most radical candidates the city has seen, according to several longtime observers of city politics, including a few prominent Republicans.

They’re taken aback by her attacks on members of her own party, such as Arizona Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers and the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and her zeal for sharing conspiracy theories about election fraud and COVID-19.

Her candidacy is a sign, they say, that the extremism of national politics is trickling down to the most granular levels of local government — where parks and potholes have historically mattered more than partisanship. This is true even in Phoenix’s District 3, which covers parts of north-central and north Phoenix and is considered a swing district in the city with more moderate representation for more than a decade.

Several prominent Republicans have endorsed Stark, the Democrat in the nonpartisan race, and others have contributed to her campaign, with a few saying that the community needs a representative who is more interested in working for the community than playing politics.

More at the link.

Every motherfucking GOPer just needs to stop with the MLK quotes. All you motherfucking GOPers enabled Trump and the disenfranchising of tens of millions of persons of color as part of Trump’s effort to actually steal the election.

For decades, GOPers have claimed that fraud is rampant in votes of urban areas - code for blacks voting illegally. GOPers have instituted all kinds of voter suppression methods to deny persons of color their right to vote, and Trump pushed this to 11.

Trump tried to steal an election he lost in a landslide. He incited an armed insurrection to stay in power despite losing in a landslide. Not a single claim by Trumpists about the election were sustained by a court anywhere. Even Trump’s incompetent lawyers somehow managed to admit that they weren’t suing on fraud (because had they done so, they would have been thrown out even sooner than they were for lack of evidence).

Trump and GOP are still intent on disenfranchising persons of color. The GOP will go back to states like Georgia and try to ram through more voter suppression efforts since Democrats managed to overcome those challenges. It’s an arms race where the GOP tries to deny people their rights and Democrats are fighting to overcome those challenges.

GOP hate when persons of color vote because they want to protect their white power base.

Trump made white nationalism the express policy of the GOP in so many ways, after GOPers have made it implicit for so long.

So no, they don’t get to reflect on MLK’s legacy without their admission of blocking everything MLK stood for.

A reminder to all: Trump is BFF with Putin and those who support Trump are dismissive of any threat posed by Russia. Indeed, given that GOP legislators visited Russia for July 4, 2018, it is clear that Russia is considered an ally and Pelosi and Democrats are the real enemy. So, Parler members are likely all quite fine with being hosted by the Russian government.

Local news says Trump has decided to not pardon himself as it would imply guilt.

More likely, when Trump learned that it would not protect him from Letitia James, he decided it wasn’t worth the bad press. Of course, if this is true, Biden’s DOJ will be able to investigate him for federal tax evasion.

Time machine memories of our 2012 MLK Breakfast—it was primary season, the Republican debate took place later that day, (you know, the one where they cheered Newt’s racist commentary and booed the golden rule) so the breakfast featured Newt, Rick Perry and Tim Scott. Ewwww.

How many Republicans fighting against raising the minimum wage would agree with Martin Luther King Jr. that all labor has dignity?

I remember even agreeing with Ronald Reagan’s adage that “The best social program you can offer someone is a job.”

Except that he had David Stockman cut job training programs.

Except that he cut school and higher education funding.

Except that he supported and promoted a system that treats labor (and not just wages, but also worker health and safety) as expenses to me minimalized to improve profitability.

Well, if you can stand wading through the pompous march-of-history boilerplate, here’s a link to the full text of Trump’s “Garden of Heroes” proclamation. Which reminds me of nothing so much as Kaiser Bill’s kitschy Siegesallee in Berlin. Another “keep hack sculptors employed” project…

Though I wouldn’t bother trying to get tickets to visit it just yet: apparently, the G has actually already set up a commission of some kind to get the project going: but there seems to be no actual plan presented so far: no enabling legislation, no appropriations, no site selected, etc.

Though it’s a weird roster he’s suggested: I like to think of myself as moderately familiar with history, but there are a large number of folks on Trump’s list I’ve never heard of. But then again, Lauren Bacall, Dr. Seuss and Alex Trebek* are on it, so there’s that…

Except that he cut school and higher education funding.

Except that he supported a system that treats labor (and not just wages, but also worker health and safety) as expenses to me minimalized to improve profitability.

I never forgot ol’ Stockmanure when I was working as a Disability Claim examiner in Pennsylvania and we received orders to purge the disability rolls by 2/5. Examiners had to meet that quota or be disciplined. Supervisors ordered us to throw people off no matter what. Which is why I got out of there and went to work Medicare in California before going to Social Security’s call center.

the to don’t list.

Of all the EO’s created by Trump, this may be among the least offensive. And as long as the sculptors are American, isn’t this akin to FDR’s Federal Art Project?

I think that was announced last week, even before the date on this tweet, but I don’t exactly remember time.

The notion of “keystone creates well-paid jobs” is misleading at best.

Keystone shows up in a region, housing prices skyrocket, but nobody is about to build anything because they know that the project will be passing on. The towns/cities fill with workers who contribute little to the community.

So the workers earn well but wind up paying overheated prices for rent in order to live and work (temporarily) in that region.

I am biased because an artist friend does sculpture — not traditional style but he could certainly adapt; this would be preferable to his paying work as a bartender and Uber driver. Another friend constructed a cow for Chicago’s “Cows on Parade” over 20 years ago; maybe this is something that would attract her though her recent work is paintings.

I thought that Keystone was on the EO list, I remember reading that somewhere, or maybe during one of Joe’s press conferences where he announces who he’s putting in what job.

What’s interesting is that the first amendment is freedom of speech. The people who wrote the constitution didn’t think it was worth putting in at first.

“Hey guys, I think we forgot something…”
