Maybe in Georgia. They did not take kindly to Trump’s vicious attacks against state officials and his efforts to overturn the results of the election. But I certainly don’t trust anything under the control of Brian Kemp who spent years disenfranchising African American voters, even before Trump was President. It is Stacey Abrams’ influence that has made the major difference in the state.

More Republican states need a Stacey Abrams. Modern Republicans have inflicted evil on this nation even before Trump. They handicapped Obama during his entire term of office. And now they hope to regain power by abandoning Trump and sticking to their standard policies of starving the poor, rewarding big business, cutting taxes for the wealthy, perpetuating white supremacy, and ignoring the existential threat of climate change.

Very well said. They’re never going to change their awful policies or try to appeal to minority voters so nothing much is going to change with the Grand Old Party.

Lawrence O’Donnell went through all of the horror scenarios possible from the final day of Trump pardons. Secret pardons, pardons for corporations, self-pardons, pardons for insurrectionists…

I think there should be serious discussion of a constitutional amendment revoking Trump’s pardons. It would probably fail, but Repugs should be forced to defend them.

If the info on Wikipedia is correct, the “1776 Commission” was only “authorized” by Trump back in September (of last year), and only formally constituted in December. So if their output looks like a rush job cobbled together and/or plagiarized from a bunch of right wing blogs, it’s probably cause it was. A “blue-ribbon” Committee - on what is obviously considered an important subject by somebody - cranking out a “formal” government document in just four weeks?.

Anyway, I stopped paying attention when I saw that Charlie Kirk was a member of the Commission.

According to Wiki,

Hanson received his B.A. with highest honors in classics and general college honors, Cowell College, from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1975[1] and his Ph.D. in classics from Stanford University in 1980.

In 1991, Hanson was awarded American Philological Association’s Excellence in Teaching Award, given annually to the nation’s top undergraduate teachers of Greek and Latin.

Doesn’t that background make him an expert on American history ////

So the 1776 is not the only bullshit “scholarship” being published. A while back Trump promoted a couple of climate deniers to the Office of Science and Technology Policy. (David Legates and Ryan Maue). They published some crap with the OSTP logo, which they did without the knowledge or permission of OSTP. They got busted by the head of Trump’s OSTP back to NOAA. It is unclear if they will be punished further - a Biden administration may be able to.

Wyoming GOP chairman suggests the state should consider secession while appearing on Steve Bannon’s podcast.

Wyoming GOP chair: Western states ‘paying attention’ to Texas effort to secede (Casper Star-Tribune)

“We need to focus on the fundamentals,” Eathorne said on the broadcast, which was recently banned by YouTube for peddling misinformation about the 2020 election. “We are straight talking, focused on the global scene, but we’re also focused at home. Many of these Western states have the ability to be self-reliant, and we’re keeping eyes on Texas too, and their consideration of possible secession. They have a different state constitution than we do as far as wording, but it’s something we’re all paying attention to.”

Spoiler alert: Wyoming isn’t self-sufficient, and there’s no way we’re letting you keep the nuke command (FE Warren AFB).

After a Star-Tribune reporter reached out for comment, Eathorne said the idea has not been a topic discussed by the Wyoming GOP.

“Only a brief conversation with the Texas GOP in earlier work with them,” Eathorne wrote in the text. “Won’t come up again unless the grass roots brings it up.”

Float the idea, say we won’t consider it, base brings it up, now we consider it.

The young lass who stole a laptop during the Parler Putsch has now been arrested.

A woman who the FBI says took a laptop belonging to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and tried to sell it to Russians has been arrested.

Riley June Williams was arrested on Monday in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, according to a listing on the Justice Department’s website tracking arrests made in connection to the siege.

Williams is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, as well as violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Tomorrow morning I will breathe a sigh of relief

Trump’s 11th-hour assault on the civil service by stripping job protections runs out of time

The order gave agencies until Tuesday to review potentially affected jobs. But as of Monday night, no other federal agencies had delivered a list of affected employees to White House officials for review, with the exception of the Office of Personnel Management, which also rushed to reshuffle much of its staff of roughly 3,500 people into the new category.

That list did not move forward, the senior administration official said. The administration concluded in recent weeks that federal employee unions would sue if any career staffers were moved into the new personnel grouping. Lawsuits would bring more unwelcome troubles at the end of the administration.

I was on Trump’s little list…now my job is safe…

That thread raises a good point. Trump has pretty much zero interest in intel briefings…but if he can get access to intel, he can sell that intel for cash, money he desperately needs to keep the bill collectors at bay.

And once he’s no longer POTUS in a little over 24 hours, what better way to get access to potentially financially valuable intelligence than by having some loyalists in high-level positions that can quietly slip that information to him under the table?

It’s thought that a new President might want the benefit of a prior President’s experience. Particularly if a problem arises in connection with something the predecessor was deeply involved with. (Obviously no-one will ever want the “benefit” of DT’s advice.)

1) Of course he thought he was going to force another term for himself.

2) DT famously requires one-page briefings with pictures. I doubt that would give him any information worth selling, and we’d know if he suddenly started requiring decent briefings and paying attention to them.

In the case of honorable ex-presidents, it might actually be helpful to have someone on hand who remembers a brief interaction with a then-junior staffer of some other government who’s now a senior advisor; for example, if HW were to mention to Obama that a particular Chinese low-level person had a policy disagreement with another particular Chinese low-level official and now they’re not so low level. Or Clinton once had a discussion with some African or Venezuelan guy when they were in grad school in the UK, and now Biden’s going to find that memory useful at some meeting.

We didn’t move to Lubbock till 1960 but it hadn’t changed much in six years. The Lindsey was the classy high priced place. It got all the first runs and the big blockbusters, which The Robe surely was. Ninety-five cents was a pretty steep price for 1954. The Lindsey was also segregated until the very day that segregation was outlawed in 1964.
The Village on 34th street was the home of second run sci-fi and gladiator movies. It was kid heaven. It was not segregated (segregation was optional, rather than legally required, in Texas). In fact they didn’t exercise much control of any kind over the audience.
The best movie deals we had were at the base theaters on my dad’s various Air Force assignments. Johnson AB in Japan had a really fancy main theater, with a 2 story lobby, and there was a smaller secondary one on the other side of the base. Admission was a dime. We could watch cartoons, serials, second and third runs and locally made monster and gladiator movies all day for that. My mother considered it a blessing. It is unclear if they will be punished further - a Biden administration may be able to.

earther.gizmodo.com

Almost sounds like Biden needs a Department of Strategic Storage of Progress and Science Deniers. He can assign them all there, give them an insufficient budget and allow them to massively in-fight among themselves for turf and limited resources. The Devil’s Island of Civil Service.

In various genres of TV and Big Screen (can’t really say “film” anymore because so much is now all digital), the shaky-cam technique has been a fad.

I don’t like it.

Well, now the Academy of St. Martin’s in the Field (the history of which is ironic, and analogous to The Monkeys, as it was formed as a group that had nothing to do with an actual academy) has a shaky-cam version of an orchestral piece by Shostakovich.

The piece is inherently frenetic.

But the video is down right maniacal.

Still worth watching:

TRAILER: Shostakovich Chamber Symphony Op.110a / Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Tomo Keller

It’s only a preview of the whole piece, but just watching the three minute preview leaves me exhausted.

Monday at noon it was such a pleasant 75F, but then the temps started to fall and now it is down to 51F and it will be much colder in coming nights.

At least the humidity is up to 90%, which feels much better than the typical Santa Ana conditions (in which RH can get down to the single digits.)

A low pressure center is going to part itself off of northern Baja for a couple of days. This is unusual as normally the low pressure center, that accompanies the strong high pressure ridge, is usually farther east in these kind of events.

Unfortunately we won’t get much rain, if any at all, even with the high humidity. Imperial valley though will get some rain.

Similar to here in Moravian Silesia; we got a pretty good amount of snow here, even in the lowlands, but it’ll start warming up as the week goes on with temps close to 50° F by Friday. And close to 50° F is rather mild for this time of year.

Conservatives could have held up Obama as ultimate proof that the American Dream works: that anyone, regardless of race or background, can rise to the highest office in the land if they apply themselves and work hard enough.

But that would’ve involved acknowledging Obama’s accomplishments, however grudgingly, and they just could not bring themselves to do that for a black person, preferring to pursue the course of implying that he was not American-born, that he enjoyed special treatment from Affirmative Action and must’ve been put in place by traitors and/or foreign interlopers, etc…

I was about to answer, “No, it’s not a thing,” but reading this article, apparently, it totally is a thing that he could do. No President in the history of the United States has done such a thing, and let’s face it: If Trump was considering breaking that precedent, we would’ve heard about it. No one in Washington likes him enough to keep that secret. His advisors have been on record as telling him not to self-pardon, as well.

124
O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..  Jan 19, 2021 • 4:42:47am

Note: I think that article I linked was a spectacularly shitty take. I don’t think Trump has any plans to issue secret pardons. I also question the legitimacy of trying to constrain the power of the pardon by legislative action. I agree with the premise that Trump’s pardoning is egregious and has done serious damage to the credibility of our justice system, but trying to ram something through to change that with only days left in his presidency is just going to aggravate the claims of partisanship from the right and further sour the chances that Senate Democrats will be able to work to overcome the formidable obstacle posed by the McConnell Filibuster Brigade.

If you want to understand why Repubs are suddenly acting pissed with Trump, then you only have to realize that Jan 6th changed the math. Two things happened that day: Ossoff won his race and thus made their humiliation at the polls complete, and Trump’s insurrection killed any lingering support for him among all but the toxic white supremacist branch of the party base.

So they’ve decided to resort to a tried and true strategy: Mass amnesia. The party never supported Trump, the party never liked him, and the party always had issues with the things he did. If you confront them with the receipts, they’ll treat any suggestion they supported him as “slander” and push a separation between “the office” (which they’ll insist they were obligated to support) and “the man” (who they will all declare they were opposed to). But they also will find all sorts of excuses for why everything he did (from caging kids to bombing Syria) was the fault of someone(s) else.

Trump was a serial violator of his oath—as evidenced by his continual use of his office for personal financial gain—but focusing on three crucial ways in which he betrayed it helps clarify his singular historical status. First, he failed to put the national-security interests of the United States ahead of his own political needs. Second, in the face of a devastating pandemic, he was grossly derelict, unable or unwilling to marshal the requisite resources to save lives while actively encouraging public behavior that spread the disease. And third, held to account by voters for his failures, he refused to concede defeat and instead instigated an insurrection, stirring a mob that stormed the Capitol.”

“Many chief executives have failed, in one way or another, to live up to the demands of the job, or to competently discharge them. But historians now tend to agree that our worst presidents are those who fall short in the second part of their pledge, in some way endangering the Constitution. And if you want to understand why these three failures make Trump the worst of all our presidents, the place to begin is in the basement of the presidential rankings, where dwell his rivals for that singular dishonor.”

It’s not just that he’s awful. It’s that he’s awful by every measure one can apply. No other admin has been as bad at doing the job and executing the function of the Executive as Trump. There have been awful admins in the past, but he’s taken all of the bad acts by the others and combined all of them in to a new nadir.

Wreck economy? Yup - we’ve had others who failed to act and caused economic harms, but Trump’s failures are spectacularly awful; even before the pandemic, his idiotic trade war pushed nation into a recession
Kill hundreds of thousands with disastrous handling of pandemic? Check. Others have managed pandemics, but none have had the ignominy of ignoring the experts and pushing woo and junk science and snake oil as Trump did.
Refuse to do the job and incite insurrection? (that’s a new one - no other admin has ever done that, because for all of their faults, they understood that when they lost an election, they were out).
Committing felony conduct at every opportunity for self-enrichment? Trump’s impeachment twice is just scratching the surface here. Others have engaged in malfeasance (Nixon for starters), but Trump’s crime spree was all about enriching and empowering himself and negating elections so he could stay in power to benefit from the trappings of power of the office without doing any of the work.

From a disqus rando

Then test each of these statements:

1. Put national security ahead of own needs
Nixon-Cambodia, Reagan-Iran Contra, W Bush-Iraq scam.

Gosh there seems to be a pattern here….

But yes Trump is the worst. Selling arms to terrorist sponsors for personal gain (Saudis etc); colluding with Israel not in our interests, and of course Ukraine extortion scheme. With the three examples above there was a goal in mind - some experts advocating each ‘necessary’ for some other goal (win Vietnam war, free hostages/ stop commies in Nicaragua, war on terror) - the action not taken solely for personal gain. With Trump just the opposite.

2. Dereliction in a health crisis
Reagan-AIDS.

Inadequate response but not even close since (1) Reagan let experts like Koop speak up with facts even where religious supporters didn’t want to hear about condoms or gay sex; and (2) local and state governments could and did enact prevention and treatment measures without Reagan going on TV to politicize or contradict or override them.

3. Insurrection/ refusing to concede an election
Nixon-Vietnam prolongation 1968 and Watergate 1972; Reagan ‘hold the hostage’ 1980; W Bush-fake Florida protestors/ SCOTUS end run 2000.

(Oh look there is that pattern again).

But, these were all gimmicks/ crimes to win the election or decide the election when still in doubt. Even I don’t think Nixon, Reagan or W Bush would have started an armed insurrection on the Capitol (or the weeks of ‘rigged election’ or called a Sec of State in a state to tell them to find more votes after three counts showed they lost)….

It’s a perfect summary of why Trump is catastrophically awful in a league of his own… Truly earns the title of worst President ever….

Yeah, I have had a go around with a little bigot about their statement that we shouldn’t let Muslims run for office. I told him that was un-constitutional. He claimed bullshit, it was not. He came back arguing that the 1st amendment gave them the ability to worship as they wish, but not the ability to run for office. So I told him I would bet him $10,000 he was wrong. He wasn’t about to go with that number but said he would go $5. So I had him look up Article 6 Paragraph 3 of our constitution.

I won the $5, but it just shows how many people only think of the amendments when talking about the constitution. They have just never bothered to read the actual boring words of the actual constitution itself.

Nixon avoided impeachment by realizing he couldn’t win and resigning, that asking his own party to sabotage the effort was not only a losing prospect but also one that would damage them as well as the country.

Reagan and Dubya both avoided impeachment because they not only enjoyed the (earned) loyalty of their admin, but also because they had approval ratings high enough that Dems knew impeachment would be practically suicidal as a party.

Trump got impeached twice because he not only gave not a single fuck about his own party or his underlings, but because he is such an unpopular shitheel that there was no real downside to impeaching him for the Dems.

Trump got impeached twice because he not only gave not a single fuck about his own party or his underlings, but because he is such an unpopular shitheel that there was no real downside to impeaching him for the Dems.

He got impeached twice because the GOP covered up the crimes from the first to the point where they held a sham trial that refused to consider the overwhelming evidence of his wrongdoing. Then, the GOP covered for Trump in the second impeachment by delaying it until after inauguration where the GOP claims that it would now be a moot issue.

GOPers delaying it so that it’s moot is also evidence they know that Trump fucked up but the GOP doesn’t want to hold the votes because it shows how completely complicit the GOP are with Trump’s crimes. Trump engaged in an armed insurrection and failed coup, and the GOP base are fine with all of it. They still believe that Trump was denied reelection on baseless accusations and scams; Trump lost in a landslide and there’s precisely zero evidence Trump won anywhere. No evidence of voter fraud, but tons of evidence Trump engaged in election interference (felony conduct under state and federal law). Trump’s the one attempting to steal the election, but he’s projected his crimes on Democrats with the willing assist from the GOP base, GOPers in Congress, and a feckless media.

Don’t worry. The media is already laying ground work for economic insecurity argument against Harris. They’re already running articles in the NYT about how Trump’s white nationalist treasonweasels aren’t happy with Biden, and Biden isn’t yet in office. It’s only going to get worse from here.

Trump’s disastrous admin has wrecked so much of functioning govt that Biden will have to rebuild a cadre of qualified and competent professionals to do the jobs in a nonpartisan manner. Trump put loyalists in charge and moved to root out the professionals because they were standing in the way of his regressive and racist agenda.

One of the first challenges will be the Stock Market…the half-trillion-dollar infusion is about to wear off and Biden can either attempt to keep it artificially afloat with another deficit-incurring fix or just let it crash (as it should have last year) and recover on the strength of the economy.

And he will be damned if he does and even more damned if he doesn’t…

Get INTO the Confederate States, and it’s even more likely they were taught that said Confederacy were the real inheritors of America’s founding principles.

Time to trot out my favorite quote from Virginia-born Union General George Henry “The Rock of Chickamauga” Thomas on this very topic:

“[T]he greatest efforts made by the defeated insurgents since the close of the war have been to promulgate the idea that the cause of liberty, justice, humanity, equality, and all the calendar of the virtues of freedom, suffered violence and wrong when the effort for southern independence failed. This is, of course, intended as a species of political cant, whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand in hand with the defenders of the government, thus wiping out with their own hands their own stains; a species of self-forgiveness amazing in its effrontery, when it is considered that life and property—justly forfeited by the laws of the country, of war, and of nations, through the magnanimity of the government and people—was not exacted from them.”
Report to General Ulysses S. Grant (17 November 1868)

Fortunately, the local schools are pretty good.

Thing about it is that so much of that couldn’t have succeeded without like-minded folks on the other side of the equation. And whether they adopted it because they secretly agreed with the Confederate cause, because they wished to “heal” after the War, or simply because they did not wish to alienate family and friends who’d fought for the losing side, America as a whole eventually agreed it was better to act as though the War had been a “mistake” than the true loss of a dying philosophy.

True, but that requires that the foreign country in question be considered an adversary.

Biden and likely his Justice Department will unquestionably feel that way, but at the time it was done most people would tend to feel that Russia was an ally of the government at the time.

If I were her attorney I might try arguing in front of the jury that she can’t be up for Death Row because in order to accept that she was selling to an enemy, you have to act as though the current government was already the government in question on 6 January.

And if we do that, the next Republican administration will charge anyone who continues dealing cleanly with the outgoing administration’s allies-that-won’t-remain-such-under-the-GOP. It’s not like Trump didn’t want to charge Obama himself for not immediately pivoting the country’s alignment towards Russia on November 5th, 2016 already.

Trump supporter shocked after president commutes sentence of man who swindled him out of his life savings

President Donald Trump last week commuted the prison sentence of a man named Fred Davis Clark, Jr., who in 2015 was convicted for crimes related to a $300 million dollar Ponzi scheme.

Now the Tampa Bay Times reports that one of the man’s victims, a Trump supporter named Kimball Pugmire, is not happy with the president’s decision.

Pugmire lost his entire life savings thanks to Clark’s Ponzi scheme, which the United States Department of Justice says “involved sales at Cay Clubs Resorts and Marinas… to approximately 1,400 investors in the Florida Keys and elsewhere.”

Sadly, Kimball is probably still MAGA Proud.

Trump supporter shocked after president commutes sentence of man who swindled him out of his life savings

Sadly, Kimball is probably still MAGA Proud.

Pugmire also said that the president’s decision to commute the fraudster’s sentence had shaken his faith in whether Trump has been truthful with his supporters.

“I had been trying to forget all this, but it makes you wonder, even being a Trump supporter, about his honesty,” he said.

Makes me ponder: Up to very recent history, we use to hear the phrase “I’m a Reagan conservative” on a regular basis on Fox, am hate radio, among older GOP pols, etc. I wonder if we’re going to hear “I’m a Trump MAGA” over the next 3 decades….at least to some extent.

Green Beret earns Soldier’s Medal for aiding retired Army Ranger

An Army physician assistant earned the Soldier’s Medal for his bravery and decisiveness when he strapped a makeshift tourniquet on his own mangled arm and treated his badly wounded mentor after motorcyclists slammed into them at high speed.

Lt. Col. Larry Wyatt, a clinic director with Special Operations Command, was on a bicycle ride with retired Ranger Col. Thomas Wells, a Princeton-trained trauma surgeon and avid cyclist, when a pair of motorcycles sped toward them on a narrow bike trail bridge near Tampa.

Oh my God, these people are NUTS.

The ‘resistance’ began election night 2016 with opposition candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President William J. Clinton appearing before supporters and national television jointly wearing the color ‘purple’ in an attempt to start a color revolution. Clinton refused to concede, continued to level personal attacks, and lit the fuse to the ‘not my President’ movement despite long held traditions of concession and reconciliation of past political leaders. And thus, emerged the face of the “partisan enterprise”. The Hillary Clinton for President campaign was the source of nearly every post-election attack weathered by Donald J. Trump after he lawfully obtained the office of President. Further as shown, President Trump’s 2016 to 2020 ‘scandals’ originated from ‘get Trump’ affiliated parties often funded by the Clinton Campaign or associated with partisan enterprises in support of the ‘color revolution’ started by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Weird how all these white armed insurrectionists are captured alive without shots fired or without so much as a less lethal weapon fired in their direction.

White privilege on display even here. Armed insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol to overthrow the government are taken into custody without any incident, and more than a few are released on bail or their own recognizance. Armed insurrectionists.

None of that would be on display if the persons involved were persons of color (and we know that the security would have been far more likely to use force, including deadly force to stop the insurrectionists as well as arrest them on the spot - not days and weeks later).

.

Her attorney is not going to have to argue against a death penalty because there is no chance they are going to seek a death penalty. Much like Reality Winner and Chelsea manning she will get a few years, maybe a bit more than those because of the added charges of illegal entry etc.

It’s the FBI playing with its food. They had everyone in a building. The perps were let go. Then, after the great release into the wild, they had to look all proactive by asking the public’s help to recapture them. An epic clusterfuck.

Evidence is handled better if a cop finds an open container or smells pot in your car.
