The End of a Monster, and the Dawn of a New Day

Politics • Views: 23,279

There were many times in the last 4 years when I had to fight off despair, when everything looked dark and hopeless. Today I feel overwhelming joy, sadness at what was lost, and a cold rage at the monsters of the GOP who literally tried to steal an election.

It isn’t time for reconciliation and unity, because none of those people have faced any consequences for their criminal actions. Unity can only come after accountability.

The main White House page is already replaced with what offices are in the White House and is in the process of being restored to useful function.

TBF some of the plagiarism was from authors’ own writings. Technically, it’s still plagiarism if you don’t cite the source, but not quite as egregious. That being said, whether or not it’s plagiarized, it’s still total racist rubbish and appropriately consigned to the dustbin.

Well Leningrad Lindsey, let’s save some time, shall we?

Hunter has no spot whatsoever in the White House except as a guest of his family. He is not an “advisor” or an “assistant,” and there’s no chance that we’ll hear about how Joe had to override our intel agencies to grant him a security clearance. We won’t hear that Hunter has been handed jobs that should be the purview of experienced federal employees, like addressing Middle Eastern peace negotiations or the federal response to CV-19, which means we won’t see pictures of him looking like a refugee from the Hamptons in a kevlar vest or hear that he’s written off entire states for federal assistance because of their “color.” And he’s not the head of a business organization which can grift the federal government for the next four years with “rentals” and “fees” and other means of nickeling and diming us to death.

tl;dr, the Trumps made themselves targets with their actions and their activities, none of which you spent a single second looking into for the past four years. So feel free to fuck off forever.

Me too. But this turned out to be the right decision. We now have a real president and we will be in good hands for at least the next 4 years. And I’m thinking that the ceremonies today and the images of the new administration so diminished Trump that it is unlikely that he can stage a comeback. Attention has moved on and it’s not coming back, at least not until he faces the courts in New York. Silencing him by depriving him of his megaphone is the worst punishment Trump can face. He no longer can dominate the stage; he has become invisible and long may he remain so.

re: #18 aatharuv

Donald Trump had removed the taxation

I agree that PR is much more complicated, but in terms of all the laws that now have to be changed, and a transition period for the entirety of federal law to apply there..

That said, there are _constitutional_ complexities for DC, namely:
1) What to do about the DC’s EC votes, if a separate state is carved out of the populated parts of what is now the Federal District listed in the constitution.

Guam (or for that matter the US VI, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa) of course have much smaller populations than any present state, and of course none of the other territories even have a permanent human population.

I’d love to see more mainstream and legislative support for Puerto Rico, since there’s still a lot of anti-statehooders both on the island and among the diaspora employing concerningly Trump-like rhetoric to deny and dismiss the referendum results.

With reference to Guam, there recently has been some momentum for it and the Northern Mariana Islands to reunify, though there has been no clear consensus for what self-determination status it prefers yet. We may well see a ‘Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands’ either as a state or a country this coming decade.

The victim sent the card info to the hackers and they have the money. Apparently there is no recourse. The dude is 70 years old.

Oh, and his wife was away visiting the grandkids.

Let those you care about know about this type of scam. People do fall for it.

Grant County is two counties to the northeast, outside of the Panhandle.

‘It just starts an argument’ — Biden’s 20 voters in Grant County keep their politics private (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

“It’s unprofessional to tell a classroom full of kids: ‘You should be a Democrat, or you should be a Republican.’”

It also guided her personal life. She learned to keep her politics private, especially after moving northwest three decades ago to Grant County.

And especially lately.

Grant County’s support for Donald Trump has made it a poster child of the MAGA movement. In 2016 and 2020, more than 90% of its voters cast ballots for Trump — leading the state, pushing it toward the top nationally and drawing airtime and ink from journalists at CNN, the New York Times and overseas.

“Welcome to Grant County, Nebraska,” the U.K.’s Independent wrote four years ago. “Where people love Donald Trump more than ever.”

They still do: As of last month, the secretary of state’s office counted 433 registered Republicans in Grant County and 31 Democrats.

Most of the Grant County Democrats contacted by the Journal Star are still keeping their votes a secret. Party lines can be drawn so tightly in their communities that business owners fear losing customers, and family members fear losing relationships, if their politics were made public.

“Nobody knows what party I belong to. I just say I vote for the good of my country and leave it at that,” said a Grant County Biden voter. “Because it just starts an argument.”

She can think of a couple specific family members who wouldn’t take the news well.

“They’re really, really for Trump. And, man, they’re carrying it way too far. One of these days, I might just put my big foot in my mouth and tell them off.”

Nobody wanted to go listen to poor middle Donnie’s farewell whine-fest, and it gave him a sad

According to CNN

During his final remarks as president, however, Trump seemed incapable of his escaping his role in instigating the mob violence at the Capitol on January 6, a day that will forever stain his legacy.

“We were not a regular administration,” Trump said, in a rare moment of honesty.
(Ed note: ooh! CNN SLAM!)

Speaking without the aid of teleprompters, Trump sounded detached and despondent as he touted his perceived achievements, citing the creation of the Space Force as well as his success in placing three conservative justices on the US Supreme Court. Though he did not mention Biden’s name once during the remarks.

And then this:

“The music typically played at Trump rallies blared over the loudspeakers, including one of the President’s favorites, “YMCA,” by the Village People. Only this time, Trump did not bop along to the lyrics as he often does at his rallies, pumping his fists, to the delight of his supporters. Trump lumbered around the stage like a defeated prize fighter, scanning the venue for the exits.

The knives are out for this fucker, and going out the way he did - inciting a mob to attack the Capitol in the Dimwit Coup - has given even flinchy mainstream journalists free rein to shit all over Trump.

Interesting. I was under the impression there was still bad blood over WWII, especially the occupation of Guam which involved at least some soldiers from the then Japanese ruled Mariana Islands.

Maybe this is a pipe dream, but I’d really like some mechanism(s) for those US Citizens (and Nationals) not residents of a state — both residents of the territories and also US citizens living overseas who don’t necessarily have recent ties to a state — to have voting representation in Congress. At the very shared representatives.

And Puerto Rican statehood would be great too, with some reasonable plan to get them closer to the economic standards of the mainland.

NBC is broadcasting the parade now and it’s bizarre. The streets are vacant except for an unbroken single line of socially distanced soldiers, with wire fencing behind them. It’s moving slowly and one of the on-site reporters said that the parade was not keeping up with her adrenaline. She’s happy because the president waved at her.

Republicans are against democracy, and had Trump’s 1/6 putsch worked they would have lined up obediently behind Trump like the fascist goons that they are at the usual 99+% rate for Republicans obeying one of their own.

The GOP’s overall strategy for ending democracy is to slowly whittle it away so that too few people see what’s going on to stop it. So the only problems the GOP has with Trump are 1) he failed, and more significantly, 2) his failure may have made the underlying GOP contempt for democracy too obvious to ignore.

Direct election of the president/vice-president. Make it so if you’re an otherwise eligible voter (18+, American citizen), you can vote regardless of where you are in the world - so people in the territories can vote, and ex-pats can vote. As far as Congress goes, that probably requires statehood, and I think that will be a very hard sell given the size of the population in most territories.

Have a good one, Lizards and stay healthy.

Like a flipped switch, the attitude inside online QAnon communities shifted from glee to shock and misery: “NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENED!!!”; “So now we have proof Q was total bullshit”; “I feel sick, disgusted and disappointed”; “Have we been duped???”; “You played us all”; “HOW COULD WE BELIEVE THIS FOR SO LONG? ARE WE ALL IDIOTS?”

Meanwhile, several QAnon loyalists performed medal-worthy mental gymnastics to keep their delusion alive. A few suggested that the video of Biden becoming president was a deepfake and that he was actually locked away behind bars as it played across the nation. Others posited that Biden himself had in fact been working with Trump to dismantle the deep state all along, and would be the one to sic the military on the supposed traitors. Many simply pleaded with each other to stay patient: “Q wouldn’t do this to us. He wouldn’t let us down. Don’t lose hope.”

There’s a couple of possibilities:

1. it was a foreign based pysc-op
2. it was a grift
3. it was trolling/amusement

If it was #3, then it likely morphed into #2 when people started taking it seriously and buying/selling merch. But I can’t shake the idea that it was #1, great way to undermine belief in the system/democracy and sow chaos.

In dozens of conversations on social media sites like Gab and Telegram, members of the group have begun calling Mr. Trump a ‘shill’ and ‘extraordinarily weak,’ according to messages reviewed by The New York Times. The Pentagon blocked members of President Joe Biden’s incoming administration from gaining access to critical information about current operations, including the troop drawdown in Afghanistan, upcoming special operations missions in Africa and the Covid-19 vaccine distribution program, according to new details provided by transition and defense officials,” Politico reports.

“The effort to obstruct the Biden team, led by senior White House appointees at the Pentagon, is unprecedented in modern presidential transitions and will hobble the new administration on key national security matters as it takes over positions in the Defense Department on Wednesday.”

I really don’t understand this whole Q nonsense. It’s so bizarre.

There is a guy named Dan Olson who has two good, but quite disturbing, videos on how youtube is great at promoting bizarre videos.

The first is about how flat-earth videos were popular, before being supplanted by Q-Anon, and the second is about the shit youtube is showing to children:

In Search Of A Flat Earth

Weird Kids’ Videos and Gaming the Algorithm

Exactly what to do about this awful direction technology is taking is not as obvious as there is a problem here to solve.

I see people saying QAnon cultists are upset and confused, and may be ready to rejoin the real world because none of their weird fantasies came true.

That will be VERY rare. Most of them will quickly find ways to make this setback fit into their delusions.
