There is a guy named Dan Olson who has two good, but quite disturbing, videos on how youtube is great at promoting bizarre videos.

The first is about how flat-earth videos were popular, before being supplanted by Q-Anon, and the second is about the shit youtube is showing to children:

In Search Of A Flat Earth

Weird Kids’ Videos and Gaming the Algorithm

The videos make it clear that the bizarre results of youtube videos are a problem. What to do about them is not as obvious.

Never Trumpers for Trump
How Trump’s conservative critics became wingmen for the president’s supporters.
By William Saletan
Nov 29, 2018

“…What Williamson defends, at bottom, is a Christian exemption from universal moral claims. Gerson, writing in the Atlantic in April, worried that Trump was reducing evangelicals to “an interest group in need of protection and preferences.” Williamson embraces that reduction. “Christians have the same legitimate right as any other group in a liberal democratic society to pursue their own political interests as they understand them,” he writes. If they decide their interests lie in “continued support of Donald Trump,” Williamson seems fine with that. After all, he reasons, they’re operating in a “secular political system, the democratic realities of which necessitate various compromises and tradeoffs.”

Once Christians are liberated from moral scrutiny, they can abandon what Williamson derides as the progressive vision of Christianity: “a cult of niceness.” They can embrace, in his words, their healthy distrust of “politics-powered do-goodism.” In short, they can renounce virtue.

There was an unmistakable toughness beneath the warm evocations of our common citizenship in the 46th president’s inaugural speech.

I think if Biden wins the nom in 2016, it’s still a squeaker, but Biden wins the presidency. Maybe.

I think Trump gets the 2016 nom regardless. His opening racism salvo was just too enticing for a shit ton of people pissed off that a Black dude was elected twice. And McConnell went all in, knowing that if Trump wins, he gets to turn the entire judiciary into the conservative shit show it is today.

Rolling Stone:

Secret Service Confirms John Mulaney Investigation Over ‘SNL’ Jokes

When John Mulaney went on Jimmy Kimmel Live last month, he told the host that the Secret Service had opened up an investigation on him following jokes he made during his monologue on Saturday Night Live in February 2020.

“I did a joke that was not about Donald Trump,” he explained. “The joke was about how it was a leap year and leap year had been started by Julius Caesar to correct the calendar and another thing that happened with Caesar was that he was stabbed by a bunch of senators ‘cause he went crazy. And I said, ‘That’s an interesting thing that could happen.’”

On Tuesday, the Secret Service released a 27-page file on the incident, as obtained by Rolling Stone. Under the activity “Exhibits inappropriate behavior,” the agency’s protective intelligence and assessment division noted that Mulaney “made inappropriate statements regarding President Trump on Saturday Night Live.” The investigation was opened on March 1st, 2020, one day after Mulaney’s comments on the show.

Seems like a plausible alt-scenario : my interesting-question take is whether or not he would have tapped Hillary for the VP slot (and whether or not she would maybe have run last year) ?

But yeah, 2016 was going to be a revenge referendum on 8 years of the Obama Admin: Trump might have run ?won? anyway.

Meanwhile in Canada:

Conservatives have voted to expel Derek Sloan from caucus (CBC)

It turns out the Conservative Party really isn’t into open Nazis.

Conservative MPs today voted to expel Derek Sloan from caucus after the eastern Ontario MP accepted a donation from a notorious white nationalist.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole initiated the ouster earlier this week after news emerged that Paul Fromm — whose ties to white supremacist and neo-Nazi causes have long been documented — had contributed $131 to Sloan’s leadership campaign.

Sloan fought against the vote, saying he was unaware of the source of the donation because Fromm used his full name, Frederick P. Fromm.

Conservatives voted by secret ballot today, with the majority of MPs voting to remove Sloan from their benches.

In a statement issued this afternoon, O’Toole called the donation the “last straw.”

“The Conservative caucus voted to remove Derek Sloan not because of one specific event, but because of a pattern of destructive behaviour involving multiple incidents and disrespect towards the Conservative team for over a year,” he said.

And McConnell went all in, knowing that if Trump wins, he gets to turn the entire judiciary into the conservative shit show it is today.

I think Biden probably wins 2016 against Trump. I was just looking at the numbers and was surprised to see that Hillary had the smallest percentage of the popular vote for a Democrat since Bill’s first run in 1992. Kerry got a tenth of a percent more of the popular vote. If you consider 2016 a two person race, you have to go back to Dukakis in 1988 to find a Dem with a smaller share of the popular vote in a head-to-head contest.

Biden definitely doesn’t and wouldn’t have had the Clinton baggage. And the BernieBros probably don’t become a thing because Bernie probably doesn’t get much air as an alternative. Both of which probably reduces Stein’s influence in the general. And maybe gets a few people that voted for Johnson to instead vote for Biden?

You’re probably right about Trump still getting nominated, the GOP was ripe for a hostile takeover in 2016.

3 Beverly Hills residents arrested in connection with Capitol riot: FBI

Three Beverly Hills residents are facing federal charges in Washington, D.C. in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, officials said.

Gina Bisignano, 52, John Strand, 37, and Simone Gold, 55 are expected to appear in federal court in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, according to the FBI.

Bisignano, owner of Gina’s Eyelashes and Skincare in Beverly Hills, was arrested Tuesday, while Strand and Gold were taken into custody Monday.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday shared stills of the three defendants obtained from video reviewed by investigators. The photos show the individuals both outside and inside the Capitol.

The FBI began receiving tips about Bisignano’s involvement on Jan. 10 and reviewed her social media accounts in which she said she would be attending the rally at the Capitol, officials said.

They say she was identified in videos because she uses her first and last name, her city of residence and was seen wearing an “identifiable Louis Vuitton sweater throughout the riot.”

In video reviewed by the FBI, Bisignano allegedly uses a megaphone to yell “Everybody, we need gas masks … we need weapons … we need strong, angry patriots to help our boys. They don’t want to leave. We need protection.” Officials allege she is yelling as other rioters are “physically assaulting police officers preventing entry into the Capitol.”

Bisignano turned herself in to the FBI.

The three defendants face a number of federal charges including aiding and abetting the willful injury or depredation of U.S. property and obstruct, influence or impede an official proceeding and disorderly conduct on U.S. Capitol grounds, officials said.

She also wrote a column for the Beverly Hills Courier about her time as an insurrectionist.

It’s amazing how many morans are just right out there in the open admitting what they did.

Beverly Hills Salon Owner Recounts Her Actions in D.C. Riot

Simone Gold appears to be the wingnut doctor who argued before the Supreme Court against coronavirus restrictions and pushes quack cures. She was previously interviewed by the Washington Post.

‘I do regret being there’: Simone Gold, noted hydroxychloroquine advocate, was inside the Capitol during the riot

Regional news.

DENVER (AP) — A suspected militia member from Colorado arrested in connection with the deadly U.S. Capitol riot will be kept in federal custody at the request of federal prosecutors following his initial court appearance on Tuesday.

Robert Gieswein, 24, of Woodland Park appeared by video during a brief hearing in federal court in Denver a day after turning himself into local authorities. Magistrate Judge Scott T. Varholak set another hearing for Friday for prosecutors to make their case for why Gieswein should continue to be held behind bars while the criminal case against him in Washington proceeds.

Gieswein’s lawyer, Assistant Federal Defender Matthew Belcher, did not object to the standard delay to allow the government time to present evidence explaining why Gieswein should be detained. Gieswein only spoke in response to Varholak’s questions making sure he understood his rights.

Expecting that new President Joe Biden will revoke its permit, TC Energy Corp. on Wednesday announced it will suspend work on the Keystone XL pipeline.

The Canadian energy company said it will review the decision, assess its implications and consider its options. “However, as a result of the expected revocation of the presidential permit, advancement of the project will be suspended.”

The Mrs. and I are currently celebrating with breaking out a bottle of Cline Cellars Ancient Vines Zinfandel. That was after a dinner of pasta in butter sauce with orange peel and dill, vegies, and a salad.

That bottle will be finished tonight.

So it was said. So shall it be done.

For those who like Zinfandel, try an ancient vines zinfandel (these are from vines that are more than 75 years old, so the yield per acre is lower, but far more concentrated in flavor). We started seeking out these kinds of Zinfandels on our honeymoon, when we first drank it at Cline Cellar all those many years ago.

If you’ve never tried Zinfandel, try finding an ancient vines in your wine shop. It’s fruity, complex, and super smooth (low tannin/acid). You might find it almost chewy - jammy and with notes of rasberry and some mineral notes that balance out the sweetness. These aren’t sweet wines like say a reisling or gewurtz, so if sweet wines are your jam, maybe check something else out.

Yeah, we did Napa Valley on our honeymoon and got to try a bunch of wines and varietals from some pretty well known vineyards. Frogs Leap, Coppola, V Sattui (which you can only get at their winery in Napa), Domaine Carneros, Cline, and Stags Leap Wine Cellars. Back then, we got treated really well since we were on our honeymoon. Stags Leap treated us to their reserve tasting - we got to try their $200+ bottle tasting, but found that the price didn’t match the quality. It was good, but not so much better that it deserved $200. V Sattui was neat since we got to try so many different wines there, and Cline (which is in Carneros region) was neat since we got to try those zinfandels.

7 deadly Zins is another label to look for. I think they have an ancient vines version too.

Washington State has a few good wineries that we liked - Hogue for one (Yakima Valley).

Lawhawk’s recommendation is an excellent one. Old vine zins are “jammy” wines. Though hard to go wrong with California zinfandels from 2015-2017.

BTW, here’s a hint for those who are looking for Finger Lakes whites - the 2020 crop has been called one of the best in decades, which means that when those wines hit the shelves next year, look for wineries like Heron Hill, Dr. Frank’s, and McGregor.

Better yet - skip those. More for me. Everyone we talked with has said that the harvest was the best in decades, with perfect weather and great growing conditions throughout the season. The wines they’re known for: Rieslings, gewurtz, and colder weather reds. Dr. Franks and Heron Hill are probably available nationally. McGregor isn’t… (more for me).

267
BlueSpotinAL  Jan 20, 2021 • 5:00:43pm

OK, since I am going to be optimistic and assume winery tours can be a thing again, I highly recommend a tasting at Hendry in the Napa valley. The room holds about 10 folks, so you have to schedule in advance. The owner charges a fee to weed out freeloaders, and it can be applied to bottles of wine (around $30 a bottle), so it is a splurge. However, he does a very educational tasting, which shows how order of tasting, saturation of selected taste receptors, etc affects enjoyment of wine.

re: #267 BlueSpotinAL

OK, since I am going to be optimistic and assume winery tours can be a thing again, I highly recommend a tasting at Hendry in the Napa valley. The room holds about 10 folks, so you have to schedule in advance. The owner charges a fee to weed out freeloaders, and it can be applied to bottles of wine (around $30 a bottle), so it is a splurge. However, he does a very educational tasting, which shows how order of tasting, saturation of selected taste receptors, etc affects enjoyment of wine.

We did tastings in the fall in the Finger Lakes, and the wineries there did an amazing job of social distancing and managing tastings. If you get a chance to visit, Dr. Franks is a top destination since they pretty much started modern viniculture in Finger Lakes by figuring out the grapes that would grow there and thrive.

Most of the wineries in the Finger Lakes overlook one of the Finger Lakes. You can do a loop tour around one of the lakes (Keuka is one of our favorite loops) but Seneca is another option. Hammondsport or Penn Yan are good starting points, as is Watkins Glen or Ithaca.

Tomorrow, Hannity will ask why Biden hasn’t balanced the budget.

The only one way to balance the budget this year is to raise the highest marginal tax rates to 99%, treat Capital Gains as income (indexed for inflation), chop the DoD by 20%, and pray for a cubic kilometer of gold to appear inside Ft. Knox. And that might not even do it.

I don’t think Hannity would be happy about that.

The fact is that we are selling debt at a cost to us that is = to or < than inflation. Adding debt while slowly changing your tax structure is just smart in such conditions.

I love Finger Lakes gewurtztraminers. Even Longisland is making some pretty decent plonk.

What a day this has been…so much has happened and its all been good

My youngest sister tested negative for covid today after one of her coworkers tested positive. That’s good news.

Her boss didn’t want to close the office or think of calling the customers of the sick employee so my sister ended up calling everyone on the appointment list. He didn’t even tell my sister why the coworker was out until she asked.

She also had trouble keeping her husband and teenage daughter to isolate from her at home. They knew the hazards, but thought she was being unnecessarily cautious about isolating before her test. They thought her chances were low so no biggie.

She was really upset about everybody when I talked with her this morning and I think she needs to have a family meeting. She’s in the Green Bay WI area.

Niebaum Coppola is worth a tour because the grounds are beautiful and they do have a lot of movie memorabilia.

Some of the other wineries are worth it for the grounds, art installations, etc. It’s been quite a while since I was in Napa to know about costs for tastings/tours. Domaine Carneros is good for bubbly wines - and they’ve got a gorgeous estate. Domaine Chandon is another champagne producer. Yountville CA is a foodie haven so you can’t really go wrong if you just go for the food.

Some of the CA lizards might have a better idea of where to go.

We were down in Texas Hill Country a couple years ago, and we were disappointed mostly because the wineries were pricing tastings as though they were more established and worth $20 or $30 for a tasting, when Napa or Finger Lakes was charging equal or less. We’ll have to check out Becker if we can get those up here.

Virginia wines are an interesting mix. Same with North Carolina. We were surprised at the quality at the Biltmore (which has its own vineyards both in CA and NC). Most of their branded wine is sourced from CA, but they do have NC wines too depending on the label. A lot of those VA and NC wines are on the fruity side - not as refined as what you’d see in CA, NY, or Old Wine (or Australia or South Africa or Chile for that matter).

Israeli wines are another good option - hot dry summers means that the wines really get interesting. And it also means getting out to Israel, so that’s a bonus :)

I think family conferences are always good as it can put everyone on the same page. Precautions like washing hands and using masks (cover the nose too) and washing hands should be similarly performed by all. A positive test by one will be an immediate danger to the other members. Also, outdoors, I like to stay upwind of those around me.
I’m glad your sister is okay. Still I would do a followup test to be sure.

I’d say nowadays the Finger Lakes region could almost support that as a alternative since there are microbreweries and distilleries in the region as well. Can attest to the quality of some of the former, but not the latter.

I sampled a few Virginia wineries about six years ago when I was in the region for a convention and spending time touristing some museums and Civil War battlefields. Liked the quality of some of them as comparable to Finger Lakes wines (though different grape varieties) though they were a little pricier for said quality. Paid it for a few bottles since the industry there deserved a chance.
