Trump’s legacy lives on in the tax code. Under energy saving improvements, you can’t include low-flush toilets. Not only did the Biden administration have to sanitize the White House, there was probably a massive dump left behind in the toilet.

And you’re just about to plunge it when this bald-headed dude emerges from the turd to say “It’s unclear how all Americans are served by opening travel from terror hot spots, proposing a giant amnesty, or halting the installation of security barriers along the Southwest border.” And then you put the plunger on the head and push it down, and then flush.

We can bitch about the shitshow in which he left the Civil Service, which will require a significant rebuild.

Not really CL’d, but a topic for discussion as an example of the problem he left us:

*start* re: #168 aagcobb

Yes, but the adults are back in charge, and I have confidence they will do everything in their power to ramp up vaccination. *endit*

I agree, but they have been left with less than shit.

The signals given to all levels of State governments have been, at best, chaotic. No one right now knows whether to shit or go blind.

As an example, what kind of documentation will each individual who receives the vaccine (twice) receive? Keep in mind, it has got be able to pass international travel muster.

What, you are going to put all that into a readily accessible database? Who owns it? Who proofs the data? Who gets access? It’s got to track 330 Million people.

So let’s be clear, the logistics challenge is just breathtaking. We need to manufacture, distribute, track, and document two thirds of a Billion doses of vaccine with a period of effectiveness that is not yet known.

We may have to do this every six months for the foreseeable future.

I don’t care if you are adults or not (and adults with usable skills are surely better), but this is one bitch-kitty of a problem with plenty of places where the bunny can get stuck inside the snake, shutting the system down.

Mystery Red Guitar update - I was taken by a guitar (what else is new?) during the inauguration show and went looking to find out what it was. Turns out it was a late 60s Kustom K-200 (Kustom was better known for their sparkly padded amplifiers more than their guitars, so the guitars are kinda rare), and they’re a bit pricey.

But a company called Eastwood makes a reproduction that’s a lot more reasonable.

Very cool. But my wife saw one of the originals in Transparent Blue and likes it a lot.

Surprising that Tuberville didn’t vote “no”, but then Trump hadn’t instructed his cult to oppose the nominations, so Tuberville was left adrift.

OT: have to say, despite our concern about rebuilding alliances, and I may be too optimistic here, but it almost seems as though our allies will be letting bygones be bygones and we will be welcomed back to our traditional role. A lot is going to depend on how well the Democrats can overcome the obstacles that the Republicans will be throwing in our path. Of course, nothing can restore the 400,000 lives and more lost due to Trump’s criminal negligence and maybe bringing tens of millions of Trump fanatics back to reality is an impossible project, but perhaps the other damage can be repaired more quickly than we anticipated. Maybe we can emerge from the nightmare faster than we hoped.

It was basically the exact opposite of when he came down that elevator 5 years ago: Nobody gives a fuck that he’s gone, the press aren’t breaking down his door to talk to him, and even those he once thought of as lackeys (certainly not friends) either turned down the RSVPs or chose to be in DC today instead. He’s either been raging for hours in private or silently sulking instead that his every move is no longer of interest to anybody the banks holding his debts and the prosecutors preparing cases against him.

If I remember correctly, one of the points of the whole “Operation Warp Speed” thing was, the companies involved would produce 1 billion doses during the trails. That way as soon as the trials were done and the FDA approved them, there would be enough for everyone in the US and a few hundred million left over for other countries on day 1.

I think its done by the same people/organizations driving the propaganda the last 4-6 years.
I think its damage limitation. The more they can blunt and blur the negative consequences of their actions, the more of their base will remain, the faster they can start blame Biden and take back the narrative.
Also if you can blunt peoples anger, the less pressure they will put on the administration to change stuff and possibly punish people.
I’m sure they are already busy planning the run up to the midterms.

It may blunt right wing anger (which is good) but Dems will never allow the whole let bygones be bygones thing become a thing. Pelosi won’t (and shouldn’t), because she was specifically targeted to be murdered. McConnell is not going to either because he likes pence (also targeted to be murdered) better than trump.

The best gloves I ever had were polypropylene glove liners. thin enough for precise handling of small objects but enough insulation for 0 degrees Fahrenheit and above. Even wet they insulated because they held almost no moisture in the material. Like polyester then tended to go pfft and get a hole near flame. All my other winter gloves I hated, too bulky and hot.

Oh, no no no no. The bed is at the top of the “must fix” list whenever it breaks. The last bed I had that broke, many moons ago, I put the mattress and box spring on the floor until I could hack something back together, because I wasn’t going to be able to sleep whilst literally falling off the bed.

I’d have done that except about 10 days ago I got really sick. 102 temp for 4 days (COVID test negative) and right in the middle of that all my muscles went on strike overnight. I’m just now starting to be able to stand up on my own… Barely. My balance went kaput and I was hardly able to walk (waiting for initial test results). re: #34 Hecuba’s daughter

One Trumpless day has converted me from despair to cockeyed optimism.

Permanent damage to the alliances however in that we gave them a very stark reminder that foreign policy can turn on a dime with a change of administration. And it happened much more rapidly than previous occasions since Trump pretty much cared nothing about diplomacy, protocols, or long-term relationships.

And certain groups that were hesitant to trust or wary of being used as pawns will be very skittish about dealing with the USA again. And I’m sure the Kurds will have long memories of being betrayed by the US - they won’t be forgetful or willing to blame it all on Trump either.

It’s not just trump it’s the entire REPUBLICAN party. If Biden can’t turn that around (which is the tallest of y’all orders) it doesn’t matter because no ally can depend on America with REPUBLICANS in place. They’ve shown they have no alliances other than their own power.

The difference is that we have a team of people in charge of the US government that gives a shit about more than just their personal enrichment and power. They are empathetic, sympathetic, and willing to do the hard work to improve the lives of all Americans.

Today, President Biden (love the ring of that) and VP Harris (or Madame VP if you prefer) - and I love the ring of that, will be focusing on pandemic related issues. They’re going to work on trying to get the vaccine logistics straightened out, improve public health messaging that has been a muddled mess since day one where Trump actively undermined the experts by refusing to mask or social distance and bullied everyone around him to do the same with dire consequences for them and us.

Unfu…

Nope. Totally fucking believable. As anyone with a functioning brain and pulse could attest, Trumpworld never had a plan for the pandemic. It was all vaporware and misdirection. They couldn’t be bothered with specifics and logistics is all about the specifics because not a single person involved in the planning inside the WH was an expert, consulted with experts, or listened to actual experts.

Their depraved indifference and refusal to act are why more than 400,000 Americans are dead from covid19 in just about 10 months. Put another way, Trump’s disastrous covid19 response has meant that more people have died from covid19 than servicemembers and honored dead are buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

a lot of people compared trump to being in an abusive relationship.

we all knew it but there was one significant difference

truly no way out.
no running away
no battered person’s shelter etc
no running to a friend or family

the only escape route (impeachment) was blocked by his enablers

so we had to put up with it - learn to deal with it
sometimes just ‘take it’

i am certain that over the next few days and weeks we’ll recognize that we’re breathing free. that everyone deserves to. and oh yeah, this is what it’s like.

and as we begin to unbend and unknot, the survival rituals fading because they’re no longer needed, we’ll start to see how pretzel twisted up we became so that we could survive and endure the perversion that it was

An overall positive, no?

Depends.

On how they respond to deciding* that elections don’t matter and that our country is no longer a functioning democracy.
1. Do they sink into apathy and leave the process entirely without taking any further action than not voting. Not a good example for their children or community, but arguably positive compared to other options.
2. Do they radicalize and consider non-violent non-political activities.
3. Do they radicalize and consider violent non-political activities.

* - Of course, possibility here they are just yapping and don’t really feel that way. Social media for you.

Not really, because people who respond “there is no political solution to our problem” are implying that the only solution is, shall we say, a final solution, if you get my drift.

they’re just politically lazy and
- dont want to do the work required
- and if they did are still unwilling to accept that part of the system is you don’t always win/get what you want

I think Tucker Carlson and other right wing wackos think Capitalism is a monarchy with profit centers under control of the King… aka crony authoritarianism. Putin’s Russia is the best example.

It does confirm their constant support of this sort of system really starting with GW Bush but at a crescendo with Trump.

I work in what has been a kind of policy backwater in the federal government for several years and I don’t expect that to change much which is fine. re: #161 lawhawk

Unfu…

One thing I hope Joe and his team make sure of (after the absolute priority tasks of vaccination management and COVID mitigation, of course) is collecting and keeping the receipts of the Trump gang’s utter mismanagement of the vaccine rollout. We can snark around about the *media’s* carping over “400,000 deaths on Biden’s watch”, but I think that it will be a vital issue in the opening days of the new Administration, that when the inevitable question comes up: i.e. “If we have scores of millions of doses available, why can’t I get a shot [tomorrow]?”, that the blame for the screwups gets assigned where it properly belongs.

Actually, nothing is wrong with it, even though nothing remotely similar to this has ever happened before and it wasn’t even a big deal. In his inaugural address, Joe Biden talked about change. The Senate gave an example.

Dear Leader’s Legacy:

Donald Trump is, in fact, the first president since Herbert Hoover to lead his party to losing the presidency, the House, and the Senate all in a single term. Along with being the first president to be impeached twice and the first game-show host elected to the office, that’s Trump’s claim to the history books. Well, that and 400,000 dead Americans and the failed coup d’état business.

Said Wilson: “We all know Ted Cruz is sort of a political force of nature. He is what he is. You either hate him or you hate him. And he is a guy who went so far over the edge, not just to appease Donald Trump and Trump’s base, but because he felt like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) had gotten out ahead of him on it.”

The real issue with Cornyn and all the others is they don’t want to go on record voting at all.

They need Trump’s crazy base voters (many of whom never voted before), so they can’t vote yes. They need sane people who know an insurrection is beyond the pale, so they can’t vote no.

All of this performance grievance by conservatives is to avoid a vote at all.
