Got my second vaccine yesterday at lunch. Had bone shaking chills by 8:00 when the vaccine produced enough COVID spikes for my antibodies to react to. Feeling better today.

Worth single every side effect to know I probably can’t give COVID to my husband. I have been a nervous wreck ever since his brother died of COVID last month.

My husband was very worried about my chills since he had never seen anything like them (he is not in medicine). Fixed me hot tea and piled blankets on me. Assured him they would pass soon and it just meant my immune system was working.

Mrs. Fish ordered our newest restock of liquor from a local liquor store that now delivers. Woo! In there was a bottle of something called “Old Grand-Dad’s 114-proof whiskey.” It’s actually not bad, for being bargain shelf. It’ll knock you flat on your ass, though.

Got a tot of Old Grand-dad from our school’s military instructor when I was 12. It was sort of a performance award.

My old grandpa drank Old Grand-dad. Always had a couple bottles in the fridge in the office at his service station. For the price it is a good whiskey.

I’ll have to try it sometime. Old Crow is my favorite cheap whiskey but I’m thinking that I need some Famous Grouse in the near future.

I was a teetotaler until I was 26, my first drink was a bottle of Shiraz my boss-at-the-time got me as a wedding gift that I saved for 2 years and we drank when we bought our house. I am embarrassed to admit that we couldn’t handle the taste of the dry red and mixed it with Vanilla Coke because we were eager to suck it down and get buzzed for the first time in our lives.

The problem with ordering online is that you always order a couple extra things. When I order from Target I wind up with cabinets full of snacks.

Per last thread, I have no idea how much snow I’m going to end up with. WeatherUnderground says 3.4 inches for my zip code but so far this winter I’ve never gotten as much as they’ve forecast. I suppose I’m due to get more than forecast. We’ll see.

I’m currently in a belated “wild phase”, though Mrs. Fish and I have been cutting back on the drinking, now strictly on weekends, so we’re coming out of it. I was kept at home in my teen years with strict curfews, went to a conservative Christian college in bumfuck middle of nowhere (though I guess I could’ve gone out with some Ball State students to party), and had no friends through most of my first 5 years in Minnesota after I moved. Alcohol was a foreign experience until just a few years ago.

I downloaded the one and only Tab I could find for Mountain Jam and started learning it. My instructor on zoom today listened to me play it, started playing the Allman’s version, then wrote up a new tab which is far more accurate and also easier to play as it stays in the 9-12 frets instead of dancing up and down the neck. Having a good instructor is great.

Vanity Fair, on Biden’s covid response:

“This is a wartime undertaking,” Biden said in remarks outlining his COVID response plan Thursday.
To that end, Biden in an executive order invoked the Defense Production Act as part of a plan to ensure vaccine manufacturing continues at a sufficient pace, and is involving the federal government in the administration of vaccines rather than putting most of the onus on states, including by using the Federal Emergency Management Agency to operate as many as 100 vaccination sites. It’s an ambitious plan, and not all of it can be pulled off unilaterally. Much will depend on congressional approval, which could face hurdles in the Senate, where Republicans say the president’s proposed COVID relief plan won’t get the 60 votes it needs to pass without significant concessions. Biden is already improving the government’s response by doing the simple things—emphasizing testing, health precautions, and honesty and expertise. But the more complex issues still loom large, and could be made more complicated by the continued politicization of the crisis.

Mitch can even F*K that up!

Yes, storms rolling in off the Pacific, will be down here tomorrow, not much rain down here.

But lots of moisture heading east. A bigger storm in back of the first one, will give us a bit more rain down here.

For you in snow-land, these may be your big winter storms.

We usually get slammed with a mixture of cold Canadian air mixing with moisture-laden air blowing up from the Gulf states. Moisture coming over the Rockies tends to drop on the near side of the Rockies and not make it all the way out here.

Sites with human mods often have problems as well. Many subreddits are moderated by trash, and Fark has an overnight mod whose sympathies seem to be with the Trumpists.

These big for-profit sites like Facebook and Twitter would have to spend a lot of money on the number of mods that a site that size needs, and they like money too much to do so.

The last time I went to fish country, it was clear here where I live when I left. By the time I reached the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, it was snowing buckets, traffic was driving maybe 45 miles an hour in a 70 mph zone. I got off at an exit a few miles into Wisconsin and slid through a roundabout in the snow. Literally 15 miles down the road again, it was clear weather, and we were back up to 70+ the whole rest of the way. The St. Croix River valley is such weird topography and the weather is so different from any of the nearby areas.

I’ve walked on ice-covered lakes before. I have yet to drive on one, having been traumatized by a story from my father-in-law where he bailed out of a truck he was driving because he thought he was about to hit an open patch and lose the truck. When he got up, he saw the truck sitting in a 1/2” puddle of water on top of the ice. I don’t remember if he got the truck out of the puddle or not.

re: #77 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

My neighborhood gets that effect sometimes. I’m in the valley just before the Mississippi heads through downtown St. Paul and I sometimes get valley-and-river-effect additional snow. It’s why I used to take the bus to work every time we had a big snowstorm. There would always be an extra 2-3” of snow on the bottom half of my driveway.

It’s interesting because the Mississippi River valley isn’t particularly deep through there. I mean, it’s several stories, but the St. Croix valley is quite a bit deeper. Amazing how even that little of an influence has such an outsized effect.

Last time I drove on ice was when I was playing full time and I took a short cut across a lake in a Toyota Corolla at 1:00am after a gig north of the cities. There was an easily identifiable ‘roadway’ with a city of ice fishing houses for most of the trip. I was nervous about getting lost on the lake, but not about falling through.

On the nearest lake to me, they build subdivisions of ice houses. You drive out on the lake on a “main road”, and it branches off into clusters at points along the way. A microcosm of the subdivisions that the town named after the lake is comprised of.

Yeah, Doyle was a loon, but Garabaldi was a great character.

Almost every character in B5 was great. There were few to no one-dimensional people. It’s something Star Trek has always had trouble with when trying to have more than 2-3 be the “main cast”. The beginning of every ST series after TOS were very rough, partly because of that.

People like Nicole are getting hammered on Twitter I think a lot of people have had enough of that shit after the 6th.

It’s nice that when a reporter says “the President’s preference,” it isn’t followed by something cruel and stupid these days.

I paid off my student loans. And I’m hammering away, too!

Can’t think of anything more stupid than to hobble emerging workers with student debt that takes decades to repay.

And regardless of whether or not that succeeds, Letitia James has some papers for him, and I’m sure Merrick Garland has his best people on the case as well. And let’s not forget Chris Carr in Atlanta, who is none too pleased with his second “perfect phone call”.

I paid for a (state subsidized) University education myself. I was living rent free at the time though. My “Rent” was taking care of a recovering cancer patient.

Even if I wasn’t I still would be fighting for this, and for eventually moving to free college for all. Because I know the country will be a much better place with that, rather than how it is now. It will benefit *everyone*.

Why do trash think that fighting racism is “Marxist?” The American-right is so dishonest.

A viral video forced a wealthy Texas suburb to confront racism. A ‘silent majority’ fought back. (NBC)

The same way conservatives called Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a communist.

The phrasing is very similar to the Nazi “cultural Bolshevist” (Jew) or “cultural Marxist” (Jew).

I think debt forgiveness is basically a good idea, but it should be properly sold to persuadable (i.e., non-Republican) skeptics. And then there will have to be a consistent effort to keep it sold to enough voters to prevent backsliding.

We don’t want it turning into something like affirmative action which has become enough of a mess that CA couldn’t pass a proposition to get it back in place for state universities in the election we just had.

I didn’t even have student loans, but in the mid-70’s government supported higher education to the point that my base tuition at the U of MN was only $325 per semester.

A friend and I had a conversation months ago about student loans. She was a college dropout (her “ex” was a respected physicist and she herself is brilliant) and she repeated stories of how people she knew were able to repay their loans. She was thinking of college back in the 60s when we attended — and the costs were substantially lower in real terms than today. Too many are unaware of how costs have skyrocketed over the years even at public institutions, well in excess of the cost of living. I was fortunate to be able to pay for my education plus room and board through scholarships, part-time work during the year, and summer jobs. We were very poor and there could be no financial assistance from my family.

Yeah, a lot of these types tell them to work their way through school.

I tell them my financial aid departments tells incoming students, in no uncertain terms, that it is physically impossible for a part time job to pay for college. You WILL need extra help. And this is a state-run school.

Not many people pick up the conversation after that.

Guess what? Life isn’t fair. I paid thousands of dollars more than I was loaned. It’s predatory lending and it took me a long damn time to pay it back. I know people who had it far worse than me, and could never get out from under.

States provided substantially more assistance to students back in my day. But then, at least partly thanks to the emergence of Ayn Rand and “no more taxes” philosophies, states were forced to cut back because they did not have the funds available to provide the same level of support. Also to retain the best faculty, schools seemed to be in a financial arms race, which left everyone poorer.

Universities pass along knowledge AND they create knowledge. Creating knowledge is not cheap, but it also generates more knowledge and more economy-building things; check the incubators of new businesses, and they’re always around a high density of high quality colleges.

re: #88 Backwoods_Sleuth

The last time the charge of Seditious Conspiracy was successfully employed in a case was in 1995.

THE TERROR CONSPIRACY: THE CHARGES;A Gamble Pays Off as the Prosecution Uses an Obscure 19th-Century Law (New York Times, October 2, 1995)

Previously it had been used in a Chicago case in 1987. Two other cases in the 1980s were found not guilty by juries.

Because of the broadness of the law (seditious conspiracy does not require any overt act to advance the conspiracy), the law cuts both ways. A defence lawyer can argue a person is being tried for political or religious views rather than sedition.

Busy busy busy at the lottery ticket sales line.

People in front of me buying tickets.

People behind me buying tickets.

When no one won MegaMillions on Tuesday the annuitized jackpot was raised to about $95OM. But after the PowerBall jackpot was hit, the PowerBall players (and I think it is a slightly more popular game than MegaMillions) now have little to play for on Saturday… so today is the day to spend money.

The MegaMillions jackpot now shows “999” on the LED displays around my area. All those nines sure draws attention. Probably why the displays dont read “1B” (and many of them can make a “B” on the LED panel, so this is a choice.)

You have 20 minutes left to go buy a ticket.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 22, 2021 • 7:28:41pm

Cash value is only 74% of the annuitized value.

This is less than the ratio back in the fall, when the jackpot was small.

Interest rates area creeping up… at least for those who have $740M to buy an annuity.

If your state does not collect state income taxes - note in California the Calottery winnings are not taxed by the state - then the after tax value is around $465M.

Assuming you are not already worth millions, in which case you probably have instruments in place to shelter money from the tax collector.

Hmmm… wrong headline. The one I saw claimed it was more likely to be struck by a meteor than to win the jackpot.

Those kinds of claims are just wrong.

Many Americans have won jackpots the past few years, but no one (to my knowledge) has been hit by a meteorite.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 22, 2021 • 7:43:40pm
DES MOINES, Iowa - The jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery game has grown to $1 billion ahead of Friday night’s drawing after more than four months without a winner thanks to bad luck, poor odds and reduced play partially blamed on the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s only the third time a lottery jackpot has grown so large, but much has changed since the last time such a big prize was up for grabs in 2018. The odds of winning a jackpot remain the same — incredibly small — but for a variety of reasons fewer people are playing Mega Millions or Powerball, the two lottery games offered in most of the country.

And even as the huge Mega Millions prize and a $731.1 million Powerball jackpot won Wednesday by a single ticket sold in Maryland have juiced sales for the games, Maryland lottery director Gordon Medenica noted: “We’re not out of the woods yet.”

Medenica acknowledged sales were dramatically lower before the pandemic, and they tanked even further in the spring and summer.

As I’ve noted for months here now. The sales are way down.

Which means the revenues for the states are way down.

Combine that with other pressures against state revenues, one thing that has been avoided by Republican politicians and Trump is that states and local government are going to need help.

We are not in good economic times, and that has been true for a while.

Trump’s bluster covered up for the real systemic issues we have.

And his marks just repeat his claims. Still. And they will continue, because they cannot believe that they are the marks that they are.
