Assuming that’s about the Justice Department failed coup, I’m putting that in the + column, since what we learned increases Trump’s chances of going to prison.

But Trump’s problem is ours as well: How the Biden administration addresses these issues will have long-lasting implications for the rule of law in America — along with potentially enormous political consequences.

President Biden himself should stay out of it, and rightly seems intent on doing so. His Justice Department, however, can’t and shouldn’t. Previous presidents and previous prosecutors gave former presidents a break for their misdeeds: President Gerald Ford pardoned Richard M. Nixon; independent counsel Robert W. Ray (Kenneth W. Starr’s successor) reached a plea deal with President Bill Clinton on Clinton’s last day in office.

Trump deserves no such grace. His wrongs are far too many to ignore. His demonstrated contempt for the constitutional and legal order is simply too great. That was clear enough before Trump’s repellent and possibly criminal efforts to overturn the election results, for which he was duly impeached. Now, an effort to hold Trump to account in the criminal justice system is essential and unavoidable.

It’s doable. For this Wyoming town, and great swathes of West Virginia.

Environmental repair will be lots of jobs for a few years — bulldozing dirt to fill in the holes and tunnels, replanting. Once that’s done, they’re well-situated to be a hunting and fishing tourist destination.

ETA: Buffalo ranching. Dude ranches for city people to enjoy the stunning scenery. And Wyoming is barely an hour flight from SF — fill it with Silicon Valley techies working remotely in a place where their kids can have horses.

There’s almost no reason to use the CSS float style any more. Flexbox does it better and cleaner. And there’s no need to bump things up or down by a few pixels because they don’t align correctly - flexbox makes it dead simple to get perfect alignment.

Yes, I know people who got advanced degrees in one academic field but then became experts in another field, but her new field seems to be more in the area of propaganda and promotion of right wing ideology. I know that George Conway’s opinion piece in WaPo has been posted here several times, but I wanted to do it again, both because of this summation, and also his acknowledgement of the desire to put all of that behind us and why it is wrong.

But here’s the rub: With Trump, there’s so much to investigate criminally that one special counsel can’t do it all. Could you imagine one prosecutor in charge of addressing Trump’s finances and taxes, his hush-money payments, obstruction of the Mueller investigation, the Ukraine scandal, and post-election misconduct, for starters? It would be an impossible task for one team. One special counsel’s office couldn’t do it all, not in any reasonable amount of time, and it’s important for prosecutors to finish their work as quickly as possible. Three or four special counsels are needed. Under the regulations, each would be accountable to the attorney general.

If that feels like overkill, hark back to the reason it’s required. The laundry list of potential crimes is the product of the brazenness of Trump’s behavior over decades. Trump’s modus operandi has been to do whatever he considers necessary in the moment and thinks he can get away with. It worked for far too long. Trump has managed to avoid serious legal repercussions — not just during his four years as president, but throughout his life.

Trump’s presidency has ended. So, too, must his ability to dodge the consequences.

Rioter Who Helped Drag Officer Down U.S. Capitol Steps Tried to Flee to Switzerland: Feds

A man who helped drag a police officer down the U.S. Capitol steps tried to flee to Switzerland after the day of the siege and then, in what authorities called a different type of flight effort, attempted suicide, prosecutors told a judge on Friday.

Describing the case as “very disturbing,” a federal magistrate denied bail to Jeffrey Patrick Sabol, a 51-year-old divorced geophysicist with three children. Patrick has not been charged with assault but rather under a civil disorder statute barring any effort to “obstruct, impede, or interfere” law enforcement.

Politico:
“…even now Democrats like Sens. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia say they want to keep the filibuster, emphasizing that it drives compromise.

For that reason, the filibuster appears safe for the immediate future regardless of what happens in the coming days. If Democrats were to change it, it would likely be in response to Republicans blocking their bills repeatedly.

…………
“…Democrats could change the Senate rules to a simple majority with the support of all 50 Senate Democrats as well as Vice President Kamala Harris via the “nuclear option,” or a unilateral rules change. The rules have been changed by a majority three times since 2013, once by Democrats and twice by Republicans — first on gutting the filibuster on most nominations, then on Supreme Court picks and finally to shorten the debate time for some nominees. Changing the legislative filibuster would effectively make the Senate much more like the House, a majoritarian institution.”

What an idiot. As I’ve pointed out many times, it is easier to get to Russia than it is to any part of western Europe.

From the school of bad lawyering.

Sabol’s federal defender Jason Ser argued that his client’s wealth, extensive family connections, and prominent, well-paid and celebrated geophysicist were sufficient to grant the bail request. The defense offered a $200,000 bail package, secured by several sureties, to ensure the defendant’s continued presence in the country and at future court appearances.

The judge, however, said those facts weighed against any form of leniency in Sabol’s case.

Remarking on the defendant’s highly-pedigreed, upper-crust background—and specifically citing his employment as a renowned geophysicist, his extensive family ties and his elite financial means—Krause said “this cuts against him” because “despite all that he did go and engage in that conduct on January 6.”

Which I’m fine with, because the tyranny of the majority is a real possibility. We need some way to ensure that minority rights are still represented. However, the Republican Senate has taken things way too far, to the point where it’s now the tyranny of the minority - they effectively rule the country by preventing the majority from ruling at all. The Senate needs to be reformed to allow the majority to continue to rule, while ensuring that the rights of the minority are not trampled.

George is best buds with Ann Coulter who introduced him to KAC. All three are shit people.

We know that there’s a shit ton of dumbasses who the GOP sent to Congress, and that includes Cawthorne and Greene and others. They aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, and they’ve greatly increased the odds where someone will accidentally drop/fire a gun because we know they don’t take anything particularly seriously, including safety.

I can imagine that one might end up forgetting to take their firearm after going to the bathroom, leaving it somewhere unattended, or using it as a prop/threat.

All of these treasonweasels have to be held to account, and the more we learn about Cawthorne in particular the worse it looks - guy has lied every step of the way about absolutely everything: education, his athletics, and other accomplishments.

Poor driftglass needs a boost!

Kevin McCarthy to Tom Nichols: I’ve Got Your Back Bro!

…Here is McCarthy today, taking a break from eating paste and ranting about commies to explain that the real culprits behind the 01/06/21 insurrection are a large, amorphous group called “everybody across this country”. From HuffPo:

Everybody Across This Country’ Is To Blame For Capitol Attack Donald Trump is responsible for the Jan. 6 riot, but so are you, according to the House Republican leader.

And here is Famous Teevee Never Trumper Tom Nichols just yesterday, explaining that the real culprits behind the 01/06/21 insurrection are a large, amorphous group called “America” —

It should not, of course, have been a shock that America under Trump became a collection of overgrown adolescents who were incapable of facing adversity. When the time came for genuine seriousness—literally, a matter of life and death—America was a nation of spoiled children, sullen when corrected, explosive with rage when forced to do anything they found unpleasant, ready to lecture others on why the Constitution gave them the right to wear a surgical mask on their chin.

On January 6, 2021, while at the Capitol, CALDWELL received the following
Facebook message: “All members are in the tunnels under capital seal them in .
Turn on gas”. When CALDWELL posted a Facebook message that read,
“Inside,” he received the following messages, among others: “Tom take that
bitch over”; “Tom all legislators are down in the Tunnels 3floors down”; “Do
like we had to do when I was in the core start tearing oit florrs go from top to
bottom”; and “Go through back house chamber doors facing N left down hallway
down steps.”

The above is from a Facebook Messenger message Oathkeeper Thomas Caldwell received during the attack on the Capitol January 6th. Emphasis is mine.

It came from a court filing against Caldwell and two other Oathkeeper members.

There was a plan to execute citizens arrests and/or murder members of Congress, most likely to give Trump the rationale for enacting martial law.

The DOJ and FBI needs to declare war on these people like they did to the mob.

Self-styled militia members planned on storming the U.S. Capitol days in advance of Jan. 6 attack, court documents say

Some short clips from SK Ashby on Bob Cesca dot com:

Biden Uses Farm Bailout Power For Good

Biden plans to ask the Agriculture Department, which administers the food stamp program, for a 15% bump in the emergency benefits given to families whose kids normally would count on breakfast and lunch from school programs, Deese said. That change could increase food stamp benefits for a family of three by about $105 over two months, he said.

Biden also wants about 12 million of the lowest-income food stamp recipients to be able to qualify for the emergency food benefits. This tweak would lift their food stamps by 15% to 20% per month, Deese said.

Keep Out

Meanwhile, former DHS officials including some Trump era officials say the department botched the attack on the capitol because Trump’s adviser Stephen Miller stocked the department with anti-immigrant hardliners who don’t know shit about shit.

“For Miller to get his policies through, he put people in positions who had no qualifications whatsoever. While Stephen was solely focused on immigration, the department does other things. And the more critical parts of the department were impeded,” said Neumann, who endorsed Biden for president after having left DHS last year.

And John Scalzi has profound relief with Biden in the White House.

Two Days In

He gives his take on a lot of the “what about” questions: Executive Orders, 75 million Trump voters Ignored!

So basically your position on executive orders is, cool, keep going?

To the extent they’re wiping out Trump’s executive order bullshit and/or managing the COVID response — which, by the way, we just discovered there was really no Trump Administration plan to manage a federal-level response to the COVID crisis, so that’s fun — I’m fine with them. Biden, to his credit, has noted that executive orders can do only so much, so there will have to be legislative action as well. So I don’t think he’s planning to rule by fiat. And he does have the (bare) majorities of both houses.

But what about the Senate and the filibuster?

I’m not a huge fan of the filibuster and given the fact that the current GOP is a billionaire-supported white supremacist organization with no motivating principles other than the aforementioned racist bullshit and the idea that “whatever the Democrats want, they shouldn’t get,” I wouldn’t cry any tears over it going away so that the Senate can get work done that Americans actually want.

A commercial firm runs the medical facilities in this jail.

Nebraska inmate gets no relief for 24-hour erection — in prison or the courts (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR, because he didn’t explicitly use the words “priapism” or “penis” in describing his plight to a guard (using euphemisms instead because of the perennial religious training to be embarrassed about sex things), his case against the jail has been denied a second time.

A former inmate at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln recently lost a lawsuit against the state after, he says, prison officials defied the recommendation in every erectile dysfunction ad ever aired: Get medical help if an erection lasts more than four hours.

In this case, inmate Richard Walters wasn’t suffering because he took such medication. He was suffering from a natural affliction known as priapism, defined as a spontaneous and relentless erection.

And his suffering didn’t last just four hours — it lasted at least 24.

Though no one disputed those facts, the Nebraska Court of Appeals this month rejected Walters’ lawsuit, upholding a district court judge’s decision to throw it out.

Part of the reason the appellate court ruled that the inmate couldn’t collect: He didn’t expressly indicate what his problem was. In other words, he didn’t divulge that he had a painful bulge.

And though the case was filled with euphemisms for the area affected by priapism — read: generous use of the terms “down there” and “that region” — the case was no laughing matter.

With all the Trump signs in the neighborhood (including three, THREE!!! in my mom’s and her crazy ass husband’s yard), I’d say the former.

If the first film Traitor Cruz remembers was when he was 8 years old, he had a weirdly filmless childhood.

Weird goings- on here in the xenoburbs. (Forgot to post yesterday).

Is that a dang baboon?’: Primate seen wandering around Mineral Wells reunited with owners

Mineral Wells resident Bradee Hay had just dropped off her son at school Friday morning when she was driving home and spotted something unusual: there was a baboon walking down the street.

“I was like ‘Is that a dang baboon?!?’ It took me a second to react to what I was seeing because I’ve never seen one up close like that before,” Hay said. “Only at the zoo. I was just In shock! Other vehicles just kept driving by like it was normal, and I’m wondering, ARE THEY NOT SEEING THIS!?”

It was around 7:30 a.m. when Hay saw the baboon in the middle of the road and Mineral Wells police received notification of the baboon as well.

She parked her car and called a friend who works at the animal shelter. She posted a video on Facebook where she and her friend went up to the baboon as it climbed under a carport.

“Someone in your town is playing Jumanji,” one person commented.

The baboon was reunited with its owners within two hours, Hay said.

“It was a really cool experience and I’m glad I stopped and called who I needed to call to get the situation under control,” Hay said.

Mineral Wells police say that it turns out the primate is legal to own.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife said that exotic species are regulated by the municipal or county animal control.

How many courthouses are there in this country? A fuquetonne more than the number of insurrectionists.

If the issue is judges, retired judges fill in for regular judges all the time (vacations, hospital, recusal, &c). I imagine you could get more than a few retired judges to either take over regular cases (locking up Black people for improper lane changes) so you can use the regular judges to try insurrectionists.

Analysis of the study found that colchicine resulted in reductions in hospitalizations by 25 per cent, the need for mechanical ventilation by 50 per cent, and deaths by 44 per cent.

“Our study showed the effectiveness of treatment using colchicine to prevent the phenomenon of the major inflammatory storm and reduce complications related to COVID-19,” he said.

As colchicine is a well-understood drug, it could be used very quickly to treat people with COVID-19, the researcher says.

“Colchicine is old as it is — we’ve been treating gout with it for hundreds of years — so it’s available in pharmacies,” Tardif said, speaking in French.

I believe there are some constitutional issues about not being able to stop a legislator from entering the chamber to vote. They may legally have the upper hand on that.

Each chamber sets its own rules (which is why you can expel an elected legislator).

There is nothing in the Constitution which prohibits enforcing House rules on House members. The Speech and Debate Clause prevents a member from being held for a crime or expelled during speech on the floor, but “gun” is not “speech.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert Targets Biden’s Paris Agreement, WHO Orders With First Bills (Colorado Public Radio)

She also wants to ban masks on Federal property.

Republican Representative Lauren Boebert has introduced her first three bills in Congress. All three take aim at President Biden’s recent executives orders.

The first bill would prevent the U.S. from spending any money to rejoin the Paris Climate agreement unless the Senate ratifies the agreement.

“Responsible energy production supports more than 230,000 Colorado jobs,” she said in a statement. “The Paris Agreement puts these jobs at risk and will increase energy costs.”

The second bill would prevent funds going to the World Health Organization until America holds the international health organization and China “accountable for their role in the global pandemic.”

This was a constant refrain from former President Donald Trump, who downplayed the pandemic in its early days and whose administration was criticized for its response to the coronavirus and attempted to pull out from the WHO.

Boebert’s third bill would overturn Biden’s mask mandate on federal lands and interstate travel on planes, trains or buses. She called it “continued federal overreach.” Boebert defied public health orders by keeping her restaurant open during the early days of the pandemic.

I always forget that emojis and whatever can break if you use the standard Javascript substring() function because it isn’t multi-byte aware. Example:

let newString = theString.substring(start, end)

Not good; if a Unicode character is at the end of the sub-string, it will be chopped in half, or quarters, or however many bytes it uses, because the substring function counts it as a single byte.

This is a good alternative:

let newString = Array.from(theString).slice(start, end).join('')

Array.from() is Unicode-aware and it splits the string into an array of individual characters or “graphemes,” instead of single bytes like substring does.

This has been my geek of the week moment.

Javascript has a massive legacy code base that literally underpins the World Wide Web. They have to be extremely careful when making changes to core functionality; that’s why it’s been extended so much, because extensions mean that developers can implement new sites using the new and better functionality, while not breaking old sites that rely on some quirk of the old functionality, like substring() operating on bytes instead of characters.

Yippee!! A sure sign that summer and longer days are ahead:

After 66 days of darkness, sunshine returns to Utqiagvik, the northernmost community in the US

Utqiagvik is the revised name for Barrow, AK.

Right now in Juneau. each day is getting is longer by over 4 minutes each day.

It’s been a long, dark, and dreary winter in SE Alaska. Very little sunshine. Not much snow this year but plenty of rainfall. Plus the cloud cover has been very thick making the very low light much darker.

But, with Biden in charge, brighter days are sure to come.

It would be nice if they updated Javascript to function in the 21st century. Single byte characters… what is this the Spanish Inquisition?

Java and Rust do the same thing. There are one set of access methods for ascii characters and another set for unicode access. Python does the best because there is no such thing as a character.

That makes sense. x86 is a very complex architecture, and translating it to the ARM instruction set generates a lot of additional instructions compared to optimizing it natively.

I mailed my letter to Santa way before Christmas and still I did not get my Christmas gift. My mom told me that the person who runs the Post Office is to blame for the mails being late. I shot an email to Sinema:

Dear Senator Sinema:

I realize you still hold out hope of compromising with the GOP but I’m telling you, you will not get anything done as long as the filibuster remains in place. Besides, why should there be compromise with a party which has not done anything to discipline its members who, first, tried to disenfranchise millions of Arizonans (Sen. Ted Cruz and others) and then whipped some Trump supporters into such a frenzy that they attempted an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Do I even need to mention my Representative, Andy Biggs?

You cannot let bygones be bygones. There was seditious behavior involved and we very narrowly escaped disaster. You need to represent Arizona and not bend to the will of people who would have taken my vote and your vote away in an attempt to invalidate President Biden’s election for a false narrative of election fraud.

Thank you,

How’s it going lizard fam? Cleo and I are chilling on the bed(sort of, it’s been a long, rough day), the kid is doing Skype chat things with his friends and the Husband made it to his parents house in FL. So right now, for this moment, we are all well and fed and have a roof and a bed. It’s Saturday night and I am trying to let go of some of the stress I’ve been carrying.

Cleo has been hyper alerting for like a week now and it’s driving me insane. She’s losing her shit over light and shadows, regular sounds, or something she insists is outside. We haven’t found a thing after going outside with her to find it. I think it’s reflections in our big windows on the front and back of the house. Where this is coming from I have no clue. But it’s driving me nuts. I had to give her a dose of tranquilizer earlier it got so out of hand. Plus the Husband is gone and he’s her FAVORITE DADDY EVER. I think the next couple of evenings are not going to be relaxing. Sigh.

Yes, America will let them get away with it. It is the very foundation of the nation. The hope is that good government can last long enough to make some structural changes that promote equality and democracy, to make it harder for the next time they do it all again. That’s the goal, and one I will gladly work towards. Changing America’s caste system is not a realistic goal.

Unfortunately my personal situation does not allow me to emigrate easily, or I already would have. Believe me, I would rather leave and take a large financial hit than stay in a nation that would happily send me to do frontline work in a pandemic and risk myself every day, and would rather I die just like half a million others than see a single rich white man inconvenienced.
