On the SC emoluments dismissal - I think Trump can still be sued. The dismissed lawsuits asked the court to prevent Trump from collecting emoluments, something that is moot now the Trump isn’t president. The plaintiffs in that case could sue to stop Trump, but not to recover damages on behalf of the US. The US AG could still file a civil suit to recover emoluments.

As long as it doesn’t necessitate a tie-breaker vote from the VP.

I’m of the opinion that Roberts doesn’t have to preside:

When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

Since Trump is not the president, the Senate doesn’t need to call of Roberts (and probably shouldn’t). This should proceed like a judicial or cabinet impeachment. I’m also of the opinion that they should have either the judiciary committee or a special committee handle the trial and provide a report and recommendation once the trial is complete.

This is one of many, many reasons why we can’t ever have nice things.

If Manchin were going to change parties, he’d have done so a long time ago.

He didn’t do it when it would have put him in a solid majority, and he’s not going to do it now. He’s been a pretty reliable Democratic vote on a lot of things that have mattered over the years. He’s up for reelection in two years. Assuming he’s running again - and he hasn’t said otherwise - he has no chance of winning as a Republican, because he’ll instantly be primaried by someone way to his right. Maybe he wins again as a Democrat, maybe he doesn’t, but if he does, it’s going to be in the West Virginia Byrd tradition, by bringing home lots of pork. That has zero chance of happening for him as part of an extremely shaky Republican majority enabled only by his flipping, where he’s working against the House and Biden. It has at least a fair chance of happening for him as a key vote in a narrow Democratic majority working in tandem with the House and with Biden.

And I say “a” key vote, not “the” key vote, because Kyrsten Sinema is every bit as much an obstacle to filibuster reform. In many ways, she’s a less reliable Democrat than Manchin has been. If I were an Arizonan, I’d be looking for a primary challenge to her if she’s still playing this game come 2024 when she’s up.

Seriously, though, the Manchin Flip has become another one of those political red herrings on a par with the Faithless Elector and the Tied Electoral Vote. It’s not happening. It almost never happens, and on the rare occasions when it does, it rarely works to the flipper’s benefit. Because like practically everything else, we have been mismanaging testing of the virus to identify different strains. I heard some report the other day and don’t recall the numbers at all but it might be that we’re testing as little as .3% (or is it .03%?) of infections to identify the strain.

Also good: preliminary results from serological tests done at Israel’s Sheba Medical Center showed that those who received a 2nd vaccine shot had their antibodies increase by 6-20 times over a one-week period.
The figures were higher than those found by the center in patients who had contracted COVID-19 & recovered.

Unless they’re building this to take all the covid cases… except that’s not possible. We saw Wuhan building temp hospitals in January/February 2020. That they’re doing it in other cities bodes badly for China, but they’ll engage in same draconian steps to stop spread that they did previously. They don’t tolerate dissent way we do here, and they are far more willing to mask there than here.

The death toll in China is likely far higher than we’ll ever know. And it still doesn’t change how badly Trump did here.

I got my first Covid-19 shot today, and because I’m six years old, I got a sticker from the nurse.

Afterward, we went over to FE Warren Air Force Base to renew my wife’s dependent ID card, which is expired. Holy fuqueballs the security over there.

The appointment with the Cheyenne VA went smoothly. Other than the initial stick, there was no other effect I felt. Because of my list of allergies, they kept me around for an hour to make sure I didn’t die on them.

The trip to FE Warren was quite different. The Main Gate is barricaded. Security is such that you cannot bring a guest on the base, and because my wife’s ID card was expired, she required a special pass and fingerprinting to get on the base.

The only gate open is a side gate with an exit off Interstate 25 (that gate is normally closed). The narrow two-lane street allows them to better regulate traffic and inspect everyone going on or off base. I do love handing over my ID to a woman holding a machine gun and my car being covered by another man with one.

It turns out after all that crap, we sat around the ID card office for about an hour before they told us the machine was broken, come back another time. (We’ll try again when I get my booster shot next month.)

The drive was horrible. It was freezing fog all the way from home to Pine Bluffs, Wyo., which made the road conditions on US-385 and Interstate 80 crap. Only when we climbed up to high enough elevation travelling west did we get above the fog.

NPR helpfully told us as we were leaving for Cheyenne that there was a chance of 10-12” of snow on our return. I figured we’d chance it and if the snow was horrible when we were in Cheyenne, we’d just stay there.

It had not started snowing in Nebraska by the time we were done with the ID card office, so we decided to try coming home.

Snow started coming down when we got to Pine Bluffs, and once again into the freezing fog. By the time we were headed out of Sidney on the way home, we were down to thirty-five miles per hour with heavy snow and frozen roads. At the junction of NE-92 (the turnoff to my town), the crews were out to swing the barriers to close the road when we got there (they let us by for that last eight miles).
