I WON THE LOTTO (five free tickets).

I decided to try my luck differently today, so I bought a Wyoming state lotto ticket. That draw is later tonight.

I can’t believe Arizona legalized before New Mexico. SMDH

I think we’re going to get it soon though. It’s a priority with this administration.

South Dakota did it before either, but the state is using tax money to fund the state police commissioner to overturn the ballot referendum, using the same rubric used by the Lancaster County Sheriff in Nebraska for medical marijuana (the referendum covers more than one subject).

The Lancaster County Sheriff wasn’t funded with state tax money though.

Those defending the referendum in state court are arguing it does cover one subject: marijuana.

This is why our nation is in such desperate straits. Too many people believe as she does: Trump won in a landslide and the election was stolen. I don’t see any way to escape the damage that Trump and his enablers have inflicted on this nation by their lies about he outcome of the election.

If Dominion can bankrupt Trump, Giuliani, Powell, Cleta Mitchell et al, that would bring joy to my heart but it probably would not persuade the Trump cult that they were misled.

An Omaha man who was steps away from a U.S. Capitol entrance during the Jan. 6 siege urged others to take a police officer’s shield and pushed forward with the crowd, the FBI says.

FBI agents on Monday arrested Brandon Straka, 44, on a federal warrant related to the storming of the Capitol.

The FBI said Straka faces federal charges of:

Impeding a law enforcement officer during civil disorder;

Knowingly entering and remaining on restricted grounds without lawful authority and/or engaging in disorderly conduct within proximity to a restricted building to impede official functions; and

Engaging in disorderly conduct with intent to disturb a hearing before Congress.

Straka’s initial appearance in federal court will be Tuesday. He is being held at the Douglas County Jail.

Representative Don Bacon (R-NE2) voted against impeachment following the Capitol insurrection.

Straka and U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., spoke in October at an Omaha rally as part of the #WalkAway campaign encouraging Democrats to leave their party.

Bacon, reached Monday, said he spoke at the event to make the case that Republicans must grow their party, and that includes reaching out to people who traditionally lean toward the Democratic Party.

“Obviously, I don’t condone what happened at the Capitol and condemned it clearly” on Jan. 6, he said, echoing previous comments to The World-Herald about the violence committed by the mob.

Really, what’s happening now is a gamble on both men’s parts. Schumer is gambling that McConnell will overplay his hand in the future and either obstruct a massively popular bill or obstruct so many bills that the two holdouts crumple and agree to deal with the filibuster. And McConnell’s gambling that he gets through the next two years without losing the two holdouts or two Repubs, whichever comes first.

Verrrry interesting!

Chief Justice John Roberts has long been a student of history, but this is one part of history — presiding at the second trial of Donald Trump — he can do without.

Roberts apparently believes the Constitution offers him a reprieve from another ordeal with Trump, a man who challenged judicial integrity, declared he could get his way at the Supreme Court and then called the justices “totally incompetent and weak” when he failed to prevail.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat and the president pro tempore of the chamber, will preside for Trump’s second impeachment trial.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in an interview on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” on Monday that “it was up to John Roberts whether he wanted to preside with a president who’s no longer sitting. … And he doesn’t want to do it.” The New York Democrat noted that the Constitution appears to suggest “the chief justice presides for a sitting president.”

And I’m off to bed. Sweet scaly dreams.

I’ve been enjoying a day of not feeling the need to check online every fifteen minutes to see whether DT blew up the world, so I didn’t see the mention of China’s new covid “hospital.” In quotes because it’s most likely not what we would call a hospital. In China, if you test positive for covid, with or without symptoms, they lock you into one of those places — serious cases get hospital treatment. (They feed you, there are exercise periods, they have wifi and you can keep your phone.) They test you for covid twice a day, and there you stay until your test is negative for two days (if I recall correctly — might be three).

So that’s why they can need a 4,000-bed facility even if they don’t have high infection and death rates.

(I got this from a report by an Italian reporter who had the misfortune to test positive on arrival for his reporting assignment.)

McConnell definitely isn’t going to lose any Republicans over the filibuster. His objective is to make Biden as ineffectual as possible. The longer he can delay Covid relief, the more people with suffer, and the less popular Biden will be. And by forcing the Democrats to pass Covid relief through reconciliation, that lessens the opportunities for Democrats to enact other measures to help people, reducing their support.

I’m watching Snowpiercer (TV series) and it’s making me cold.

You could turn on “Lucifer.” /s

Lincoln and central Nebraska are really getting hammered by the snowstorm; we dodged the worst of the bullet. This morning when I was driving to Cheyenne I didn’t think we’d be able to come home.

Half an hour ago:

Omaha escapes worst of snowstorm; Lincoln gets 13 inches (Omaha World-Herald)

Schools canceled in-person classes Monday and Tuesday, trash collection was halted on Monday, and some businesses didn’t open while others sent workers home early. Road crews planned to work through the night to clear roads as heavy snowfall filled in behind them.

For some people, given that COVID-19 has led to online classes and remote working, life went on as normal. A handful of school districts, including the Omaha Public Schools, shifted to online classes for Monday and Tuesday. Others canceled classes completely.

Public works directors asked for the public’s patience as they dig out from Monday’s snow and face another, less serious snowfall Tuesday night.

While Tuesday night’s snowfall is expected to bring only an inch or two of snow, it will add to snow piles that crews are trying to clear, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said.

Meanwhile a scam is going on here in Alliance, where people posing as federal agents are going home to home and “seizing” firearms.

Alliance, Box Butte authorities investigate ‘scam’ (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

My guess here is the constant fear-mongering from Republicans about the Feds seizing firearms made an opening for scammers to do that.

According to a press release from the Alliance Police Department, the departments have received reports of “Federal Boys” or federal agents being in the area confiscating firearms, and all gun-related material including reloading equipment. According to the alleged reports, persons they will reimburse the individual for their equipment.

Alliance Police Chief Philip Lukens issues a statement: “The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the Alliance Police Department are working closely together. We have verified with the FBI, no federal agencies are seeking firearms.

” We take these allegations seriously and want to caution the public to always reach out to their local law enforcement agency for verification before ever turning over firearms. Organized crime groups purport themselves in various facets to illegally obtain firearms to further commit crimes. It is our sincere desire to keep firearms in the hands of responsible citizens. Should anyone come to your residence or contact you regarding your firearms, please contact the police immediately.”

If anything this shows that wingnut gun owners (in this area anyway) aren’t prepared to make a standoff against people seizing guns (even scammers).

The past 4 years have told them three important points:

1. Their only real path to the WH going forward is the EC, they’re unlikely to win the PV again for a long while.

2. Winning the EC is all about voter suppression, that if they can’t keep the number of people voting down then they can’t win.

3. The first two don’t matter if they don’t control enough state governments to win/steal 270 votes in the EC.

3. failed because there were simply too many contested states and too many GOP state leaders with some shreds of decency left in them. Had it just come down to PA, for example, his strategy might have even worked.

that and pissing off a lot of his base with his handling of Covid and his willingness to sacrifice lives to keep the economy humming along.

Had he possessed any sense of leadership, or any of the abilities and means to lead, he would have seen that people will flock to a President, even in times of economic crisis, if he is offering a sense of resolve and dedication to helping Americans.

But he saw his re-election only in keeping the economy up and afloat, and had Covid not come along, I believe he would have won re-election quite easily.

Which is what makes somebody like Cruz or Hawley scary: They would have seen the need to capitalize on the “rally ‘round the flag” effect and done all they could to exploit it. Or gone hard on stamping out the virus early, so that the temporary shock to the system would be that: temporary. It was Trump’s inability to see past his own ego that ultimately doomed him.

I am quite convinced this happens all the time.

Behind closed doors.

Remember, it was generally acknowledged that other Republicans disliked Ted Cruz.

But they did not come out in public to say so.

These kinds of things are kept behind closed doors.

Normally.

But Trump was about breaking norms.

And this is why Trump found such a ready audience: many Americans resent having the educated elite telling them how and why to not do this or not do that.

Trump showed that he was not going let the educated elite tell him what to believe or what to do.

This resonated with the “base”.

It’s why one reason why climate-change denial found such fertile ground in American politics.

Effectively what happened was a draw: The business of the Senate moves forward without any agreement to protect the filibuster from the “nuclear option,” but McConnell will retain leverage simply by knowing which two Dems he needs to keep happy in order to gum up the Senate’s gears when he so chooses.

It’s a dangerous game. It’s one thing to gum up the works when you’re Majority Leader and when nothing actually makes it to the senate well for a vote. Headline there is “congress gets nothing done.” It’s another when the majority leader is bringing everything the house passes to the well of the senate for a vote, and one side keeps using a parliamentary procedure to stop it from getting even taken up for debate. That headline is “republicans obstruct badly needed middle-class aid.”

Twitter Inc has permanently suspended the account of My Pillow chief Mike Lindell for repeated violations of the company’s policy on election misinformation, the social media firm said late on Monday.

Lindell used his personal Twitter account, which had nearly half a million followers before being suspended, and the company’s account to spread unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud in the presidential election

What we’re really seeing right now is that the only thing that kept this whole affair to becoming even more of a clusterfuck was that there were just enough people in the DOJ willing to end their careers. But every failure that Repubs suffer at trying to totally undermine our democracy only shows them where the cracks are and how big a wedge they need next time.

Which is why the insurrectionists, up to and including Floridaman, must be indicted and incarcerated, if convicted. All of them.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re supposed to get some snow today, but just enough to be messy. Oh well.

GOP being GOP treasonweasels as usual. They’re still trying to find ways to avoid having to hold Trump accountable for high crimes. They’ll make every excuse under the sun to avoid holding Trump accountable - that it’s moot (it isn’t), that the trial itself is unconstitutional (it isn’t), and that holding Trump accountable stands in the way of healing (it doesn’t).

Know what stands in the way of healing? Not holding treasonweasels accountable for their armed insurrection. It gives those insurrectionists aid and comfort knowing that the next time they might be successful with the right people on their side, and just enough GOPers down the line going along for the ride. Spineless fuckers all around Trump allowed Trump the space to operate. They’re still spineless fuckers who cover and enable Trump, thinking that they somehow benefit from this too.

All the while, they’re ignoring the plight of Americans who are suffering from Trump’s disastrous covid19 response, and the biggest question so far is where are all the doses promised and why the number of doses supposedly distributed to date varies so much from what has been actually injected and why states are indicating shortages.

Something happened in the process, and it happened on Trump’s watch. He’s responsible for the fuckup, and President Biden has to fix the mess all while an obstructionist GOP refuses to act (same as always).

So, just got done watching Sputnik, a 2020 Russian sci-fi/horror film definitely in the vein of films like The Thing and Alien (with a healthy dose of The X-Files, too). Overall, not bad at all; yes, it’s a B-movie, but one that’s directed very well and with a solid cast - and I’d add a solid directorial debut from Egor Abramenko. I’d give it a 7/10 and if you’ve got nothing else to do, it’s worth checking out.

Get these. amazon.com

Wear it first with a cloth mask on top.

Double masking is for if you have the lower quality masks. If you are already using an N95 or equivalent mask correctly, double masking isn’t really necessary.

Also you can find much better pricing on masks than that.

Here is a 50 pack at about 80 cents per mask

re: #242 lawhawk

Seeing stories that double masking may be a good idea with the variants going around. Ugh. I have cloth masks I use regularly now, and I have a stash of disposable masks too. Guess I can double up with the disposable under/inside the cloth mask. That makes sense.

I have a N100 mask but that has a 1-way valve which means I can spread covid19 to others, but am protected myself.

I’m seeing advise to put a filter in your cloth mask, or wear a surgical mask (which is effectively a filter) under your cloth mask. So I’m going the filter route. Maybe you can cut the disposable down so it’s a filter?

I assume they mean the surgical masks. Otherwise doctors and nurses would be double masking with their N95s and they are not.

I’ve been using these filters since summer. They have much better coverage in the mask pockets than the little rectangular filters and they create a nice pocket so the mask isn’t right up against your mouth.

I think few people outside the HC community have actual N95 masks. KN95 and others are available to us. Those I got at Amazon Ca are approved but similar to the KN95 (the South Korean variant).

This filter look good. 5 layers are good but it relies on a well fitting mask which many are not. I find the ones that are like an inverted V work best for me because my glasses go on top of the mask helping hold it well in place (if there is no nose clip). The sides are also often too loose.

James Clyburn to propose designating ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ as the national hymn (Religion News Service)

Atheist and non-Christian groups are opposed to this proposed legislation, as further Christian erasure of those who are not Christians in our government (and they have better things to do than James Clyburn naming a “national hymn”)

(RNS) — House Majority Whip James Clyburn plans to introduce legislation to designate the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” long a staple in the Black community, as the country’s national hymn.

“To make ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ a national hymn, would be an act of bringing the country together,” reads a Tuesday (Jan. 12) tweet from @WhipClyburn.

“The gesture itself would be an act of healing. Everybody can identify with that song.”

No, Rep. Clyburn, not everyone identifies with that song, and it is absolutely an act of division, not healing. Are you trying to be a common Republican?

Virtually every group which is not Christian is asking people to write or call representatives (particularly if Clyburn is yours) to state that this is divisive, inserts religious views into government functions, and he has better things to do than pander to a particular group of Christians.

We are supposed to RESPECT people who don’t believe as we do, not trample over them at every opportunity.

And yet that seems to be the norm, not the exception. (Swalwell running adverts in California calling Stark un-American for being an atheist, state senator Megan Hunt here cutting off Democratic primary opposition for doing the same to her here, &c).

When religious groups are small, they cry out for government protection (such as the Danbury Baptists to Thomas Jefferson when they were persecuted). When they are large, they don’t seek equity, they seek perfection (meaning everyone else in the minority is now an enemy).

As I noted last night, Atheist Republic is going after Twitter with the Better Business Bureau’s arbitration programme, because Twitter defines “blasphemy” as “hate speech.”

While Twitter is not subject to the I Amendment, they are subject to the BBB’s terms as a member.

I’m old enough to recall when there was a huge overlap between the two parties in terms of views: the most progressive Republicans were actually to the left of centrist Democrats; and the right wing Democrats of then were racists. Manchin is more liberal than the most “progressive” Republican. Today there isn’t such overlap; the most conservative Democrat Manchin is well to the left of the most liberal Republican.

The Republican Party is in a fight to determine its future; will it become a full fascist organization, subservient to a strong man? It’s certainly possible that the never-Trumper faction of Republicans might ultimately abandon their party and migrate to the Democrats, given that our history and our institutions suggest only 2 parties can truly thrive. In that case, how would Democrats manage a party that includes the Liz Cheneys and Justin Amashes of the world?

Turley once again telling Republicans that they are above the law.

Politico and Fox News reported that Jonathan Turley, the constitutional scholar who served as House Republicans’ witness during Trump’s first impeachment in 2019, will meet with the GOP Senate caucus in person for lunch to make the case that impeaching Trump now that he’s out of office would be unconstitutional.

The meeting comes after Turley wrote a Fox News op-ed arguing that “[e]ach senator must decide whether such a trial is constitutional before deciding whether an accused can be retroactively removed for a high crime and misdemeanor.”

Turley asserted that the trial “is at odds with the language of the Constitution, which expressly states that removal of a president is the primary purpose of such a trial.”

I think Democrats should push ahead with an aggressive agenda. I just don’t think it will help them in the elections, even if it included ensuring that every family farm will survive to be handed off to the owners children. In the 1960s and in 2009, Democrats pushed hard for changes that helped a lot of people - Medicare/Medicaid and the ACA - and they lost elections to white supremacists.

(with audio transcription of the article, 4:25)

ONLY EIGHT medical centres in the entire state of New York have managed to administer all the covid-19 vaccines they received. Cayuga Medical Centre, in upstate New York, is one such facility. It has used 100% of its vaccines—7,700 so far, about 700 each operational day—whereas the rest of the state has managed to administer only 77% of its supply.

With most Americans eager to get vaccinated, many are wondering why so many vials are sitting in storage. The answer mainly comes down to practice. Martin Stallone, CEO of Cayuga Medical Centre, attributes the system’s success to its ability to perfect complex logistics. Serving as a covid-19 testing site for nine months before the vaccination programme allowed Cayuga to streamline processes such as managing the flow of patients while keeping them far enough apart, processing paperwork and following-up with patients. “We have taken the lessons we learned by being an aggressive covid-testing site,” Dr Stallone explains. “We took that…and we applied it to our vaccine operations.”

Another Vanity Fair article I really liked is a decently long interview by Bess Levin with Katie Porter: Katie Porter Is Getting Vanity Plates for Her Minivan That Remind People Not to F—k With Her

Representative Katie Porter begins her second term in office with a reputation as the rare elected official who came to Washington to actually get shit done—usually by cutting congressional witnesses down to size with withering interrogations that feature both a whiteboard of doom and the attitude of a mom who is done with your bullshit. Be it Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan, who resigned two weeks after she caught him in a lie claiming his bank’s fraud-happy days were a thing of the past; ex-pharma exec Mark Alles, who basically shriveled up and died as she showed he collected millions while jacking up the price of a lifesaving drug for no other reason than greed; or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Robert Redfield, who tried to hide behind bureaucratic nonsense before giving up and agreeing to free coronavirus testing just so she would stop publicly tormenting him, witnesses quiver in fear at the mere mention of her name. (While raising three kids and repping California’s 45th congressional district—which includes parts of Orange County—presumably leaves Porter no time for reality TV, we assume her RHOC tagline would be “Come at America and you’re gonna get a whiteboard marker up the ass.”) The congresswoman chatted with Vanity Fair earlier this month, and again after the attack on Capitol Hill, to discuss everything from how she prepares for her viral hearings to holding Donald Trump accountable to the never-ending depths of Republican assholery.

Doocy pulling the trick of equating public protest on the streets, where there could be some violent protestors breaking laws, with the mob storming the Capitol, where everybody present, regardless of how they comported themselves, was in violation of the law from the outset.

I don’t know for sure, but I’d say it’s a long time (if ever) that this kind of Global vaccination effort has ever been undertaken.

There are bound to be logistical issues and kinks to work out before the machine is running smoothly.

Had the Conways been black, this would already have gone to Child Protective Services, and they would have placed the child in foster care while charging both parents with endangering the welfare of a child and child porn/revenge porn for Kellyanne.

They’ve got that white privilege thing going… so law enforcement is laying off?

had the conways been black they wouldnt have had the jobs/positions/’political clout’ they do

“The meeting comes after Turley wrote a Fox News op-ed arguing that “[e]ach senator must decide whether such a trial is constitutional before deciding whether an accused can be retroactively removed for a high crime and misdemeanor.”

Maybe that solves the republicans dilemma. Trump is impeached, the R´s just say they don’t think its constitutional, and D get 100% for conviction since the R´s isn’t going to be present.

D´s look like they are taking revenge by doing something unconstitutional, and R´s get rid of Trump as a factor for 2022 and 2024 while not angering the base too much or possible fire them up even more.

I got a 60-mask box of KN95’s off Amazon for roughly 60 bucks. I wear cloth masks when I go to the grocery store or into a Goodwill, where I honestly am not that worried about randomly being close enough to someone long enough to get a high viral load off them. The Kn95’s are on me when I step into a classroom and where I’m going to be around students for potentially 50 minutes at a drop. They keep the blowers running in the air circulation, and I keep the door open to help push our exhaust out, but I am not taking chances with my kids.
