I wish I could be the CFO of a Fortune 500 Company and embezzle $5 billion, then quit.

“You can’t prosecute me!”, I’d say, “I just resigned as CFO!”

Night all.

If you want to get really depressed about Covid-19, go watch the Lincoln Project’s interviews with Dr. Vin Gupta and Laurie Garrett. They’re both pissed off. Program starts at 4:00. I think LP wanted something to give people hope and it didn’t quite go that way.

Want to get more depressed? Every antivaxxer, every believer in the CoViD shot being a 5G tracker implanted, every one of those fools is a fucking incubator for mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and it’s only a question of time before we get something that is both more virulent and deadly, and then it’s a cointoss if it’s something is virulent and deadly on a Captain Trips scale.

I’m considering beginning to use #CaptainTripsIncubator about antivaxxers and CoViD skepdicks…

First World Problems, local edition.

I just re-upped my Tracfone account. (I’ve probably had the longest burner phone account in the history of cell phones; I opened the account in 2006.)

Tracfone charges you for cell phone usage by the minute, which is fine for me since I have no cell service here. They also have a small charge to keep the account open done in 30, 60, 90, 180, or 365 day chunks. Generally I re-up my account once a year (which also adds minutes to the account and long ago my wife bought a double-minutes card for my phone when I was in the hospital).

So now my account shows I have 3,800+ minutes I can use (more than 63 hours of phone time).

I only use my flip phone on trips, or for international calls (Tracfone is way cheaper than CenturyLink for that, but I have to get closer to the cell tower in town for that.)

I’m going to head off to bed. It’s 9°F here right now, and just the thought of that makes me cold. I’ll catch you later.

A hollow voice says NOW drain that swamp!  Jan 26, 2021 • 10:02:49pm

The wind is howling around my building. I have been around closing windows that have been open (for ventilation) for years. Even so, and with the heat on full, it’s chilly and breezy inside, and rain is falling. Water from the sky, hurrah!

We used to expect this kind of weather for at least one month (cumulative) out of every year. (When I was in elementary school, the storms would take out the power, and kids would turn up over the first few hours of school, because their electric clocks weren’t working.)

I miss it.

Most of the west has been in a drought.

Fortunately for California, it appears we are only a couple of days away from a major rain event.

Should bring lots of precip to the southern Sierra Nevada, as well as parts of central California, and even between an inch or two of rain down here in the corner.

30
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 27, 2021 • 2:33:47am

The rain over central California should continue over the next day or two, with plenty of moisture streaming up from the south:

Image: gfs-mslp-pcpn-frzn-us-fh6-210.gif

However, those of you in the east bay/Sacramento region are still going to be below normal for the year. Down here we normally don’t get much anyway, so even an inch (which will be 10% of our normal annual total precip) is relief. Expected accumulated precip through groundhog day:

When the dominos do start to fall for the insurrectionists - and I do expect indictments - the Republicans are going to sound all uppity and declare they had nothing to do with it.

Except for those who will be found to have been involved.

Part of the problem with tightly held religious beliefs is that deprogramming is very, very difficult. The GOP has been taken over by right-wing fundamentalist Christians, and they will not give up their beliefs lightly.

This is the GOP Senators are trying to avoid this impeachment. The five who voted for the trial are either mostly safe in their seat, or trying to get out in front of the eventual mudslide that will happen when indictments start popping.

32
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 27, 2021 • 2:42:57am

Betting man that I am, I expect Trump Junior to be facing some sort of legal problems before the next election.

Donald Trump himself is old, and aging will knock him down a peg or two over the next few years. But like those old codger pulpit-pimps who mostly sit behind desks or on TV sets, he’ll broadcast his fund-raising “campaigns” from the comfort of his room.

On this weeks Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, here is the quarter million dollar question:

Maybe it’s just me being snooty, but I think that this is considered a hard question (note: this is the third highest question in the game) condemns our education system. Oh, and the contestant is a teacher who struggled with it.

I agree… kinda. There are people who genuinely struggle in the mathematical arts, and while I understand that this too could be considered a failure of the education system, I feel like some allowance should be given for people who genuinely Just Don’t Get It (tm) when it comes to math, no matter how well or poorly they are taught. I don’t think you’re being snooty about it, and I see where you’re coming from.

These days, there are about 4 months of regular time (1st weekend of November to 2nd weekend in March, for the 2020-2021 season). I don’t think it used to be that short, did it? I feel like it changed some time in the last 20 years.

re: #39 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

re: #38 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

The contestant is a teacher. She had to use not just one but both of her remaining lifelines.

Her telephone lifeline was her boyfriend, but she couldn’t even ask the question correctly, though he did properly report that he thought the world population was around 7 billion.

Then she asked her in-studio “smartest person she knows” lifeline, who was totally clueless about the world population and how to do fractions.

So more than one person struggled with this one question.

Now game shows, and this one in particular, aim to not make the average viewer feel bad about themselves so the whole answer-the-question thing normally is not that difficult - Jeopardy being one of the few gameshows which intentionally went the other way - and thus questions like this one on world population and dividing that into the given Chinese population are thrown out there to seem difficult (yes there are people who struggle with mathematics, I get that.)

It just strikes me that a question like this should not be considered so difficult that it should stump a team of two+ people.

42
Dr Lizardo  Jan 27, 2021 • 4:42:49am

So, looks like China has come up with a new COVID-19 testing measure, which they claim is more accurate:

Months-long lockdowns. Entire city populations herded through the streets for mandatory testing. The people of China could be forgiven for thinking they had seen it all during the coronavirus pandemic.

But now they face a new indignity: the addition of anal swabs — yes, you read that right — to the testing regimen for those in quarantine.

Chinese state media outlets introduced the new protocol in recent days, prompting widespread discussion and some outrage. Some Chinese doctors say the science is there. Recovering patients, they say, have continued to test positive through samples from the lower digestive tract days after nasal and throat swabs came back negative.

Yet for many, it seemed a step too far in government intrusions after a year and counting of a dignity-eroding pandemic.

There’s no limit to the duration of this impeachment trial. They can take months to pile on the evidence if that’s what the evidence demands. Since there’s only the rules in place in the Senate, they can hold hearings on this weekly, bringing in testimony from the very insurrectionists who explicitly stated the only reason they stormed the Capitol building was because Trump told them to do it.

Snitches get….arrested and banned from Washington, DC.

Enrique is going to be really popular among the White Brotherhood now.

Makes you wonder if Enrique is still a productive informant. A “get out of jail free” card would explain why law enforcement has tended to give the Proud Boys a pass.

So, Babylon 5 is now on HBO max, and I’m introducing the Mrs to the series from the start. I think she likes it so far though she’s confused by which races are which and motivations so far.

Casablanca in space. Hive of scum and villany?

Oh, but for me, the best line was when Sinclair tells G’Kar that he just ingested nanotracers so he can keep track of him for 5 years.

G’Kar runs off in a huff past Londo and Garabaldi who go “beep beep”, which gets G’Kar even more crazy. Sinclair and Garabaldi have a talk about what just transpired, and Sinclair says G’Kar didn’t have any nanotracers, but the Narn docs will put G’Kar through all kinds of medical hell to prove that there’s nothing there. If he had put something in him in reality, there was a chance they’d find it. It’s a lot harder to prove something that isn’t there isn’t there.

That gets me thinking about the whole Proud Boys and infiltration of these white supremacist groups by law enforcement (separate from the very real issue of white supremacists, 3% and other extremist groups infiltrating law enforcement). That they think those around them could be snitches may derail these groups larger efforts to coordinate, plot, and attack. We are learning just about one leader and one group, but other groups on former Parler and elsewhere that they have to worry about LEO infiltrations to roll up these terror groups. The whisper campaign alone is a good start to disrupt these terror group plans. But arresting and prosecuting these fuckers is even better.

Maybe it’s just me being snooty, but I think that this is considered a hard question (note: this is the third highest question in the game) condemns our education system. Oh, and the contestant is a teacher who struggled with it.

how is this difficult? there are 8 billion people, roughly, wandering around, so no other percentage than 18% makes any sense.

LOL! I literally had to edit that, which just goes to show that apparently it was harder than I thought, because 9% would be more like a population of roughly 11 billion. Well, this is why I never really got better at math.

Actually, 18% is the correct answer.

I’m not very good at quick calculations beyond simple stuff, but I just figured that 1 out of 10 is of course 10% and 1 out of 5 is 20%, so it had to be the one between those (roughly 1 out of 7)

The way I solved it was that 1.4/7.something is a little less than 1.4/7 = .2/1 (divide by 7), so whatever is a little lower than 20%. Had the choices been 19%, 18%, 17%, and 20%, it would have taken more work.

I had to figure it out by thinking “about 7 billion people”: and 70 is 5 times 1.4, (because 10 x 7, 7 is half of 14), so about 1/5th: 18% was about the closest figure that made sense. Also, as common with WWTBAM, at least two of the given choices were ridiculous.

Switched internet from frontier to spectrum, got a better deal there. Had spectrum before so should have been no big deal I even knew which outdoor connection to change.

I switched the coax, hooked up the modem, even got a new router of my own for better wifi. Well….no dice. somehow I was getting internet through my wired connections but no wifi and the router was all messed up. Fortunately I was able to get a tech out last night who discovered that at some point Spectrum had cut the line that went to our house. got that redone, added made sure the lines were right inside and had everything back up and working by 9 last night. Still don’t know how we had net with no connection on some stuff.

re: #66 Eventual Carrion

And it is my understanding that if you miss the second dose within the prescribed time guidelines you have to start over with dose one and then get the second.

Well, there is the suggested schedule, 3 weeks between injections for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and the limit, somewhere around 6 weeks.

Some countries (UK, Israel) have deliberately decided to go for the longer period in an effort to get the largest number of people with the first dose, hoping that will give some protection to the largest number of people possible.

The bad news from Israel is that the 1st dose only seems to be giving about 33% protection, which is lower than they were hoping for.

That’s pretty much how I did the calculation, too.

I just rounded numbers and divided 1.4 by 7 to get 20%, and 18% was closest

Kind of amazingly fucked that this:

On COVID-19, Biden announced:
✅ A mask mandate on all federal property
✅ Extension of the federal eviction moratorium
✅ A pause on student loan payments

is seen as “progressive” rather than just sane.

(Of course I think that about all “progressive” policies).

A mask mandate on all federal property
Extension of the federal eviction moratorium
A pause on student loan payments.

you have to translate that into MAGAspeak:

-government forcing us to be suffocating sheeples
-allowing deadbeats to live rent-free not only in our heads but in their homes
-allowing party animal students to enjoy four years of debauchery and not pay for it

Always thought of “progressive” as nothing more than a sane assessment of a situation, followed by choices favoring adaptation to change.

re: #78 Belafon

In the long-term care home where my wife works they were having problems getting some residents (and some nursing staff!) to take the vaccine, so they were planning to offer it to families of staff (i.e. me) rather than just throw it away.

Luckily for the residents (if not me) they managed to convince everyone to get vaccinated in the end. (I wonder if announcing that they would give it to other people convinced them).

Johnson was originally on team Cruz. It was the Capitol siege that persuaded him it would not be a good look, but he has no problem with the concept of disenfranchising minority voters.

Reminder: Al Franken was forced to resign for an allegation pushed by right-wing media.

I’ve said this before Al Franken chose to resign, he was not forced. He was strongly encouraged, but only he could decide to resign expelling a senator is extremely difficult to do and I don’t even think anyone was discussing it. He could have and should have told people to shove it. Especially Kirsten Gillibrand.

Oh my. Sticking with the bombastic, crude, “in your face libtard” messaging? Oh heavens, no! Please don’t do that!

“There is a level of support for this president more than during the election,” said Don Thrasher, chair of Kentucky’s Nelson County Republican Party, which recently voted to censure minority leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentuckian, for what Thrasher called “impugning the president’s honor” in debate over certifying the election results.

Of the post-presidential fervor for Trump, he said, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The devotion to Trump, however, comes at great expense. The party risks tying its future to a one-term president whose deeply polarizing style cost the party both the House and the Senate during his four years in office. And he blew a hole in the party’s suburban foundation that might be irreparable.”

Has the region looked at how other heavy industry cities have adapted to changing times?

I’d suggest Pittsburgh as a successful example since it’s relatively huge steel industry crashed and burned in the 1970s. There were some doldrums* after that, but in recent times the city has rebounded fairly nicely as a medical and high tech center built around its major universities. And some of the other industries that are at least headquartered there rode things out.

You can also certainly find pictures or films of various bits of the local steel industry being torn down or otherwise demolished. Plus certainly “before and after” photos where mills are now malls or other sorts of facilities.

* - Some of the towns further up the rivers took a lot longer to recover and a few I am not sure have ever recovered. Homestead did to a degree with shops and theaters replacing mills after 30 years. Braddock I am not sure how it is doing.
